It’s Not Enough to Love Disney. They Want to Live Disney.
For some, a dream is a wish your heart makes at home.

The Mickey Mouse-shaped topiaries in front of Kelsey Hermanson’s house are the first hint at what visitors will find inside.
“You know how when you’re walking through a Disney park, and you have the option to go to Tomorrowland or to Fantasyland, and you have these different worlds that you get to sort of walk through and be in?” said Ms. Hermanson, 37. “That’s kind of how our house is.”
That is to say, each room in Ms. Hermanson’s 3,300-square-foot Seattle home has its own Disney-inspired theme.
The stairwell, for instance, pays tribute to “Peter Pan” with star-shaped pendant lighting fixtures, vintage décor on the windowsill that recalls Captain Hook’s galleon and wall decals of Wendy, her siblings and Peter scaling the wall.
warm hospitality — and so on and so forth. “Our house is not subtle by any stretch of the word,” said Ms. Hermanson, a stay-at-home mom and content creator, of the home she shares with her husband, Eric, and two children. “But I think the styling is a little bit more elegant.” That is to say, the Disney characters aren’t always so obvious in her rooms and she doesn’t plaster her home in merchandise.
The desire to take home a piece of the Walt Disney Company, which marks its 100th anniversary on Oct. 16, goes back to the company’s earliest days. Walt Disney himself began selling Disney merchandise in the late 1920s and Disney memorabilia, like an original Space Mountain vehicle which sold at auction for $40,000, can garner high bids.
partnerships with Ruggable and the wallpaper manufacturer Sanderson. For some grown-up Disney evangelists (also known as “Disney adults”), it’s not enough to pepper in a few Donald and Mickey tchotchkes — they want the whole house swathed in Disney décor.
Part of Disney décor’s prevalence is its success on social media. On TikTok, for example, the hashtag “Disney home décor” has more than 42 million views and “Disney home” has over 275 million. Ms. Hermanson grew her Instagram following of more than 150,000 by sharing photos and videos of her rooms and her D.I.Y. projects.
Though Ms. Hermanson does earn some income from occasionalsponsored posts (not for Disney) and affiliate links, she maintains that her designs are for her enjoyment first. “If social media went away tomorrow, I’d still be happy and be like, ‘Well, I’m so glad I was able to bring my little idea to so many people,’” Ms. Hermanson said. “I’ll probably be 80 years old and still decorating.”
Ginny Phillips, a blogger in Nashville, takes cues from Disney’s parks with a dopamine décor twist. “It’s just that super happy, bright, rainbow explosion,” said Ms. Phillips, 39. “I really think that it does boost my mood.” She shares her house with her husband and three children (all of whom, she said, are happily onboard with the Disney-inspired décor).
step-by-step tutorial, and people are still, almost four years later, recreating that,” she said. A gallery wall of Disney artwork sits opposite the hallway.
In her office, Ms. Phillips painted a rainbow version of the Spaceship Earth design, and incorporated retro accents like a burnt orange sofa set against a backdrop of rainbow-hued wooden planks and a monorail print. “The parks are just so, so important to me, and there’s so much nostalgia there because I visited as a kid,” Ms. Phillips said. “But then also my kids have grown up there.”
Adriane Brown, an associate professor of gender, sexuality and women’s studies at Augsburg University in Minneapolis. The “Disney renaissance” refers to the decade between 1989 to 1999 in which Disney’s animated films took on more Broadway-like qualities and sharper animation, with films like “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Tarzan.” Notably, the era produced “Beauty and the Beast” which, in 1991, became the first animated film to receive a Best Picture nomination by the Academy Awards.
experienced growth beyond the films: The brand expanded into the cruise industry, purchased Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre, and saw the Disney Channel become a central part of youth culture.
“I think the nostalgia millennials in particular have for Disney comes from growing up in a Disney-saturated media culture,” Professor Brown said. The television element was particularly instrumental in introducing children at home to Disney characters. “After Disney bought ABC in 1995, characters on ABC sitcoms — particularly the TGIF comedy block, which was popular with families — started visiting Disneyland and Disney World,” she said. “For many ’90s kids, this was their first real look inside the parks.”
Golden Oak, a development in the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., home prices start in the low millions (a 6,756-square-foot house currently on the market in the community is available for just shy of $12,000,000) and that’s not counting the décor.
Toni Sims, an interior designer in Orlando, worked on the Magic Kingdom’s design team before opening Toni Sims Design Studio and now has clients all over the country. For her clients in Golden Oak, she designs immersive Disney-themed rooms. “It’s like this challenge of, how can we give park-level-quality experience for our clients in their homes,” she said.
When it comes to refreshing your kitchen decor, it can often feel like there are a limited amount of changes you can make. While other rooms in the home typically have more decor items and soft furnishings you can swap over time, kitchens on the other hand are costly to design and you’ll most likely have your kitchen cabinets and countertops in place for years, if not decades.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t elevate the feel of your kitchen cabinets. If your cabinets are in need of a refresh but there’s no need for a complete remodel, there are simple decorating ideas you can embrace to create a more expensive-looking kitchen.
Kathy Kuo.
‘One of the easiest ways to achieve an instant kitchen glow-up is to swap out your dated cabinetry hardware,’ agrees interior designer Nicole Cullum, founder of Color Caravan.

2. Style the cabinet contents
If the doors of your kitchen cabinets are made from glass, it’s important to pay close attention to how you display the contents of them. Ensuring you keep items neatly arranged in a cohesive way will create a more polished look compared to having any clutter on show. ‘I love the idea of artfully styling your dishware and glassware on your shelves if you have glass-front kitchen cabinets,’ says Kathy Kuo.
Painting your kitchen cabinets will guarantee a completely new look while being a fairly inexpensive home decor idea.
When choosing the best shade for your cabinets, opting for dark hues such as a deep blue or aubergine color will help create a more expensive-looking finish. ‘Bold cabinet colors are taking over 2024,’ says Nicole Cullum. ‘Pair a deep saturated, but muted cabinet color with a light tonal wall for a sophisticated yet dramatic boost.’
4. Add under-cabinet lighting
Another way to make your cabinets look more expensive is to experiment with kitchen cabinet lighting ideas. Opt to add subtle lighting underneath the cabinets to fill the room with a cozy ambiance. ‘Installing under-cabinet lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere in the kitchen, adding a sense of luxury,’ says interior designer Soledad Alzaga.
5. Add decorative moldings
Lastly, consider adding decorative moldings to your kitchen cabinets to create a more sophisticated and expensive look. This would work particularly well if you have a traditional kitchen, where you can reflect the style of the room through intricate molding details. ‘Add decorative molding or trim to the cabinet doors for a custom look,’ suggests Soledad.
These ideas will no doubt elevate the look of your kitchen cabinets while being fairly quick and easy changes to make. If you are feeling inspired to carry out some kitchen DIY, make sure you’re aware of these outdated kitchen cabinet trends to avoid.

Inside: Are you confused about the differences in types of income? This guide will help you understand earned income, passive income, and investment income, and their importance in achieving financial stability. Learn about the different tax implications for each type of income.
Understanding the differences in income types is a vital component of your financial literacy.
Earned, passive, and investment income all play a distinct role in your financial portfolio and tax liabilities.

What Is Earned Income?
Earned income is the money you actively work for. You trade your time for money.
This comes in the form of salaries and wages, where you receive a fixed amount of compensation for your role or job. It can also occur as hourly wages in part-time or contractual jobs.
Other forms include tips received in the service industry, bonuses for achieving specific goals, and self-employment income for freelancers, consultants, and small business owners. Any income that directly results from your personal efforts and active participation falls under earned income.
Typically, this is the most common form of income for most people.
Real Life Examples of Earned Income
A supermarket cashier receives an hourly wage.
A financial analyst is being paid for salary.
A freelance graphic designer receiving payment for a recently completed project.
A waitress at a restaurant receives a tip from a satisfied customer.
A real estate agent receives a commission on the sale of a house.
A sales manager at a car dealership receives a bonus for meeting sales targets.
A renowned author receiving an honorarium for delivering a keynote speech at a literature festival.
A hairstylist at a salon receives income from the haircuts and styling services provided.
A fitness coach generating income through personal training sessions.
Any side hustle income is typically earned income.
How Is Active Income Taxed?
Active income, also known as earned income, is subject to income tax at various rates as determined by the IRS’s current tax brackets. Seven tax brackets, ranging from 10% to 37%, are set for individual taxpayers. 1
The tax treatment is wholly dependent on where an individual’s income falls within these brackets. Your employer typically deducts this tax directly from your paycheck, reducing net take-home pay. It’s advisable to understand the tax implications of your earnings to avoid any surprises at tax time.

Role of Passive Income
Passive income refers to money earned that is not directly linked to active efforts or time spent, often described as income one can earn while sleeping, vacationing, or indulging in hobbies.
This kind of income usually demands some sort of initial investment, which could be financial, a substantial time commitment, ingenuity, or a mixture of all. For many, they invested 10k to get started. Examples include writing a book, creating a course, investing in real estate, or running an affiliate marketing program.
Despite the upfront work often required, passive income potentially provides a steady additional revenue stream and financial independence, making it an attractive prospect for many.
Common Forms of Passive Income
Dividends and interest income: Profits made from investments in stocks or bonds often involve receiving dividends or interest.
Rental income: This is earned from renting out property you own, like houses or apartments as a real estate rental.
Royalties: Income from allowing others to use your intellectual or creative properties, such as copyrighted books, music compositions, or patented inventions.
Capital gains: Profits from buying assets like stocks or property for a certain amount and selling them at a higher value.
Product or Course Sales: A small business owner receiving income from a product or sales that they created once and can resell.
Remember, there is still a level of effort involved in managing these streams, even though they are considered passive.
How Is Passive Income Taxed?
The tax liability of passive income can vary based on how the income is generated. 2
In general, how passive income is taxed depends on how the income is earned. The key note is you are not trading your time for money.
Some forms of passive income are subject to self-employment taxes, while others may be taxed at your regular income tax rate. For instance, net rental income, a form of passive income, may attract unique taxation rules.
However, the applicable tax rules can be complex. Therefore, it’s highly recommended to seek advice from a licensed tax professional when managing taxes for passive income.
Insights into Investment Income
Investment income is a distinct financial category mainly composed of profits resulting from various investments. This pathway consists of the strategic acquisition of assets with a prime focus on their long-term appreciation or regular income, potentially in the form of dividends or interest.
Unlike earned income which often demands a substantial time investment, and unlike passive income which may need initial setup, investment income principally necessitates strategic decision-making and periodic performance reviews.
The common form is learning how to invest in the stock market or real estate.

Examples of Investment Income And Strategies
Dividends: Income received from owning shares of a company. A long-term investment strategy generally works best here.
Bond Interest: Income paid from bonds for lending money to entities. Risk-averse investors often lean towards bonds for steady income.
Capital Gains: Profits from selling investments at a higher price than their purchase. This needs a strategic understanding of market patterns.
Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs): Income from investing in property-related assets. This strategy may provide steady cash flow with potential growth.
P2P Lending: Returns from lending money through online platforms. The ability to scale and diversify this investment depends on your risk tolerance.
Interest on savings accounts – Money earned on the balance held in your savings account.
All require a strategic approach, balancing risk and rewards, to drive income growth effectively.
Please note, that the successful generation of investment income often requires careful financial decision-making and strategic asset allocation.
Impact of Tax on Investment Income
Taxes on investment income include interest, dividends, and capital gains. However, the rate is usually lower than that for earned income.
Investment income is often taxed at a lower rate than earned income, however, the exact tax rates can depend on an individual’s tax bracket and the holding period of the investment.
In certain circumstances, Investment income can be subject to capital gains taxes, which apply if you sell a stock or other investment at a profit.
For some high-income individuals, Investment income may be subjected to the Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT). The NIIT is an additional 3.8% tax on certain investment income, such as interest, dividends, and capital gains.
Capital gains from the sale of assets (like real estate or a business) are often taxed at a lower rate compared to ordinary income.
Therefore, it’s important to consider these tax implications when shaping your investment strategies. Proper tax planning can help mitigate the impact of taxes on your investment income.

Major Differences Between Active (Earned) and Passive Income
The primary differences between active (earned) income and passive income revolve around how they are earned and managed.
Active (earned) income requires active, day-to-day involvement in work. For example, a full-time job where you’re on the clock. It’s often less scalable due to time and energy constraints. Earned income is also more prone to risks like job loss or health issues that prevent work. Furthermore, in most regions, earned income tends to fall in higher tax brackets.
Conversely, passive income demands initial setup and some regular review but not daily oversight. Examples include earning royalties from a book you wrote or income from renting properties. This is more scalable because you aren’t exchanging time for money in the same way.
Advantages of Diversifying Your Income Sources
#1 – Achieving Financial Goals with Flexibility
Diversifying your income source adds flexibility to your personal finance strategy, helping you achieve your financial goals effectively. An income diversified across active, passive, and investment income can cushion against financial downturns whilst providing multiple avenues for wealth generation.
An unexpected job loss, for example, maybe less devastating when you have additional income streams to bank on, such as rental income or dividends, providing you with the flexibility to navigate financial bumps. It also allows you to explore unique investment opportunities without undue stress.
Consequently, a multi-faceted income model can be a stepping stone towards financial freedom.
#2 – Stable Financial Standing with Multiple Income Streams
Having multiple income streams provides a buffer that can significantly enhance your financial stability. “You’ll catch more fish with multiple lines in the water,” says Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate. 4
If one income source dwindles or disappears, other income streams continue to provide essential financial flow. This duplication shields you from the full brunt of economic or occupational changes, ensuring you maintain your standard of living while working towards your financial goals. Thus, a diverse income portfolio lays a foundation of financial resilience and prosperity.
#3 – Tax Benefits and Deductions: Navigating the Complexities
Income diversification presents an opportunity to mitigate taxes through various benefits and deductions. Depending on your jurisdiction, you may be eligible for specific tax breaks or deductions on passive or investment income. For instance, certain expenses related to generating rental income may be deductible, or long-term capital gains might be taxed at a lower rate.
It’s also noteworthy that certain types of income like qualified dividends or long-term capital gains can offer potential tax advantages over regular income. While tax laws can be complex, a basic understanding of these concepts could be beneficial to reduce your tax obligations.
That said, always consider seeking the help of a tax professional to navigate these intricacies, especially with an S corporation or with a schedule C.
FAQ About Different Types of Income
Earned income and passive income are two distinctly sourced income channels. Earned income is money received as a direct result of work performed or services provided. This includes wages, salaries, tips, and self-employment income.
Passive income, on the other hand, is money earned without active, daily participation. Although it may require initial efforts to set up, its subsequent generation entails minimal direct input. The key difference between the two lies in the level and timing of involvement required to generate them. Passive income gives you more time freedom.
Portfolio income and passive income are often misunderstood as the same. However, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) distinctly categorizes them. 3
While passive income generally refers to earnings gained without active involvement, portfolio income specifically relates to income derived from investments such as interest, dividends, or capital gains. Although both involve some lack of active participation, their origins, and tax implications are different.
No, investment income and earned income are not the same. The key difference lies in the source: one is actively earned by working, while the other is accrued through investing or letting money work for you.
The variance also manifests in their respective tax treatment by the IRS.
Earned income refers to wages, salaries, bonuses, and other income earned by providing a service or actively participating in a job or business.
On the other hand, investment income is generated from things like dividends, interest, and capital gains from the sale of financial assets such as stocks or bonds.
Diversification is the Key to Types of Income
Choosing the right income channel—earned, passive, or investment income—depends heavily on your financial goals, resources, risk tolerance, and time commitment.
Earned income may provide stable, regular income, but requires active participation.
Passive income, while enticing with its offer of money while you sleep, requires initial effort and savvy management.
Investment income may promise attractive returns, yet it can involve significant risk and demand financial acumen.
Diversifying your income streams could provide economic stability, flexibility, and potential tax benefits.
One wise woman, Teri Ijeoma, once stated, “It is better to make more money than you know what to do with rather than worry about how the taxes work.”
Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to financial prosperity, but understanding the nuances of various income types is a step in the right direction toward financial literacy and independence.
Now, let’s move to how to become financially independent.

Thanksgiving decor can look just as good outside the home as it can inside. From beautiful wreaths and garlands, to pumpkins and cozy lights, these festive decorations are all about making your home look and feel more cozy, special, and seasonal.
The beauty of outdoor Thanksgiving decor is that you can use a lot of the same items that you would use for outdoor fall decor and even outdoor Halloween decor, so many of these decoration ideas can be embraced from the beginning of fall all the way through to Thanksgiving – then it’s time to start getting creative with outdoor Christmas decor.
Spruce up your outside space with outdoor Thanksgiving decor
fall flower and foliage inspiration for your front door, or are looking to decorate with pumpkins on your front porch, our ideas can elegantly elevate your exterior so it’s beautifully in sync with the season.
1. Pumpkins
This seasonal squash is synonymous with fall, Halloween, and Thanksgiving decor, and is probably the most traditional and popular seasonal decoration of them all.
Whether you style your outside space with pumpkins freshly picked from a day out at the pumpkin farm, or opt for a more contemporary look with stylish faux pumpkins that can be used year after year, it doesn’t get easier than placing a pretty pumpkin by your front door.
Here, interior designer Shea McGee from Studio McGee has created a beautiful blend of traditional Thanksgiving decorations with more modern color palettes. The scattered pumpkins in a palette of pastel shades perfectly complement the planters and their home’s white exterior. Shea says of the design, ‘our wreath (currently sold out but our Oversized Fall Leaf Wreath can create a simple effect) is from our Target for Threshold line, we tied a pretty fall-hued ribbon around the top of it to add some more interest.’

2. Wreaths and garlands
A traditional festive decoration that beautifully celebrates the colors of fall and seasonal plants and flowers, a wreath or garland can add wonderful texture, color, and shape to your outside space. Wreaths are perfect for sitting pretty on a front door, and garlands can be used to decorate door frames and porch railings.
Whether you fancy embracing a Thanksgiving craft and having a go at making your own Thanksgiving wreath from flowers, branches, and foliage gathered from your yard and garden, or opt for an artificial design (we love Balsam Hill’s Autumn Abundance collection) you can never go wrong with styling your outside space with stylish natural accents.

‘Or, for a more modern Thanksgiving decor idea, why not try styling your outside space with some pretty pampas grass? It’s one of my all-time favorites to style with, both indoors and outdoors, and can add a unique, neutral texture to your Thanksgiving decor.’ Pampas is perfect for using in a minimalist Thanksgiving scheme.

Outdoor Fortune lanterns from Pottery Barn are great for using all year round too, creating a wonderful seasonal scene that can look just as good at night as it can during the day.
Designer and landscaping expert Ward Dilmore also suggests, ‘as the sun sets, create a cozy and warm atmosphere with string lights. Hang them across your outdoor area or wrap them around porch railings. These lights not only provide illumination, but will add a magical touch to your Thanksgiving gathering.’ These Connectable String Lights from Balsam Hill are perfect – and they can be used for your outdoor Christmas lighting ideas too.

The pandemic has catalyzed a re-evaluation of our priorities, ushering in an era of conscious living. As we veer towards sustainable lifestyle, home décor and furnishings assume an impactful role in reducing carbon footprint while also sprucing interiors. Décor and furnishings brand, Objectry takes the center stage in the narrative, bringing sleek, eco-friendly, and luxury décor pieces. Its creations highlight traditional crafts like woodwork, ceramics, metalwork, and stonework which are given a contemporary spin with minimalist design.
Amongst its ouvre, the brand unveils a limited edition sustainable collection, Organic. It includes furniture made from various solid woods, adorned with twigs and branches that appear effortlessly crafted by nature itself. The biophilic and functional design is evident in articles such as the live edge shelf, which can serve as a TV console or a wall-mounted shelf, unique opposite chairs, shelf mirrors, salt and pepper cellars, uneven cake sets, and stools.
The pieces make the spaces feel homely and decluttered, thanks to the design vision of founder Aanchal Goel. The graduate from Symbiosis Institute of Design has travelled the globe to bring craft, traditions, modernity, architecture and practicality, together in a décor piece. Telling us what inspires her for design, Aanchal shares, “I think my curiosity began while travelling abroad. There was a dearth of designed products and furniture for homes in India while it was available in abundance all over Europe and America. When I started with Objectry in 2015, the idea was to explore a very minimal and clean aesthetic in a country that loved to decorate everything. Reducing elements down to the essentials of a material and function is something we’ve actively participated in as a design studio.”
Aanchal’s sense of minimalism is influenced by modern buildings like Martyr’s Memorial in Baghdad, Lous Kahn’s work in Dhaka, Frank LLyod Wright’s Mousetrap and many more. She tells us, “The simplicity of form and function displayed in such buildings were a starting point for the studio. Besides that, I come from a family of design enthusiasts who would redo the interiors of the house every few years, which helped reimagine the same space many times over. Something about that helped build a sense of imagination to recreate and reimagine an existing space with many permutations and combinations.”
The same philosophy of minimal and geometric décor guides the pieces so they look like extensions of nature. Elaborating more on the sustainable aspect of the edit, Aanchal shares, “Anything that can find its way back into the earth without harming the planet, is what sustainability means for us. This collection is a limited edit that cannot be replicated since no two pieces will ever look the same. Besides that, the materials used are biodegradable. That makes the natural ageing process of the wood evident in each piece.”
On styling spaces with the collection’s pieces, Aanchal suggests, “Keep them in a space with ample natural light to be able to marvel at the rawness of nature. The promised imperfection in every piece is worthy of being seen through the many shades of light during the day.”

Creating a sleek space is simple and can involve elevating pieces you already own.
If your living room is feeling dull or just plain outdated, elevating your living space to have a more modern and sleek feel is your solution. Modern decor seamlessly blends style with functionality, creating an ambiance that feels timeless but also in the moment. It’s also important to note that modern and contemporary styles hold key distinctions, and we’ll note some differences to look for later.
From the muted perfection of neutral tones to the boldness and power of a few carefully placed statement pieces, our 13 tips will transform your living room into a modern masterpiece. No matter your personal aesthetic, crafting a living room that transcends time and trends feels unmistakably modern.
What makes a modern space, modern?
Modern decor is defined as distinct features that, together, create a sleek, clean and sophisticated aesthetic. As decor trends evolve and experience fluctuating popularity, modern decor shines in what seems to be timelessness. However, like everything else, modern decor retains some strong influences with aesthetics developed decades ago.
That’s perhaps why the term “modern” is frequently misused in the realm of interior decoration. Its confusion with the contemporary style is fairly widespread.
The modern style that we encounter today actually stems from a German design movement that originated at the cusp of the 20th century, specifically the Bauhaus movement. This so-called “modern” style in furnishings and decor dominated the early-to-mid 20th century before transforming to another style we love today, mid-century modern.
Modern design pays homage to natural materials, employs neutral or earthy tones and embraces a minimalist approach by removing excessive embellishments. While contemporary styling can encompass a diverse color palette that carries some brash, bohemian influences at times, the modern style more strictly adheres to monochromatic hues in lieu of anything overtly loud or adventurous.
Modern vs. Contemporary: Telling Them Apart
Because the distinctions between modern and contemporary styles still probably seem confusing, we’ll break it down into bullet points so you get the exact style you’re going for. If contemporary calls to you, great! You’ve found new language for the look you envision, and that’s never a bad thing.

13 modern living room tips to update your space
The key to a successful modern living room design is finding a balance between functionality, aesthetics and your personal style preferences. These tips offer guidance to work conjunctively with your own unique tastes to achieve your modern masterpiece.
1. Paint the walls a neutral color
If you’re allowed to paint your walls in a rental (make sure to check with your landlord first), this is a great way to set the modern tone in your space. Whether that be a crisp off-white or a cool grey, neutral wall tones can shift the space from feeling dull to more modern in a few paint strokes.
2. Install open shelves
An open display shelf is a great way to combine clean lines and functionality. For a rustic modern look, try a wooden ladder propped up against the wall and adorned with your favorite decor items.
3. Adorn the room with a natural rug
Modern living rooms often feel too simple, leading to a sterile feeling that just isn’t homey. Add visual interest to the space with textures like a natural rug. A faux cowhide rug, furry rug or even a woven jute rug can break up the monotony of neutral tones and minimalist furniture while maintaining a stylish and inviting atmosphere.
4. Illuminate the room with a simple floor lamp
By incorporating a simple floor lamp into your modern living room decor, you create a well-lit and visually appealing space. This piece offers some creative freedom when it comes to choosing the style of the lamp.
5. Make a statement with an artistic focal piece
A statement art piece serves as the visual center of attention in your living room. It’s the first thing that catches the eye when someone enters the room, which sets the tone for the entire space. This is important in modern design, where bold and captivating art piece breaks the monotony of minimalism and adds intrigue.
6. Opt for acrylic or glass pieces
Acrylic and glass pieces are a great option for working with a limited color scheme. Plus, they look space-age and modern. For example, a transparent coffee table creates sleek sharp lines while naturally matching the colors around it. Acrylic furniture is also inexpensive and is easily repurposed in other rooms.
7. Add smart home technology
Part of the modern aesthetic is the newest and freshest technology. Smart devices complement modern spaces well and seamlessly integrate into the sleek and minimalist design. Think smart lighting, speakers and other on-trend appliances.
8. Go bold with geometric patterns
Introduce modern geometric patterns through rugs and throw pillows to infuse a contemporary vibe. Choosing a pattern that resonates with your personal taste is a great way to add personality to the space as well.
9. Play with decorative mirrors
Mirrors are great decor pieces that naturally reflect light which helps the space feel larger. On top of their benefits related to room size, they’re also neutral when it comes to fitting a color scheme. (And if you liked the one we featured two photos up, we linked to one similar to it here.)
10. Create continuity with strategically placed wood items
Wooden furniture is a staple when it comes to monochromatic living rooms. The natural color of the wood often seamlessly fits into the feel of the room, while remaining a timeless piece with repurposing opportunities in other decor themes down the road.
11. Remove furniture to create negative space
Negative space, which is defined as the intentional creation of empty spots, is a common theme in modernly decorated spaces. Less is more in a modern living room, so purging unnecessary decor items and furniture is a must.
12. Add wall-mounted shelves and open up floor space
If you struggle to fill large open shelving and want to utilize wall space, opt for wall-mounted storage, like floating shelves. This also creates more negative space, helping give your space a more modern feel.
13. Make use of monochrome
Picking one color and using varying shades is the most common theme found in modern decor. The easiest way to go about crafting your color scheme is to select a base color and gather shades, tints and tones of that color. Create depth with contrasting light and dark variations by consulting paint experts or using color templates on Pinterest and other design platforms.
Your modern living room awaits
Incorporating these tips can help you craft a modern living room that exudes confidence and functionality while keeping with the times. With these tips and recommendations, you can easily achieve a modern living space that embraces both contemporary aesthetics and your unique preferences — even without hiring an interior designer.

DuBois native Emily Kelley’s passion for “making a house a home” has been recognized by a national publication. A spread on her kitchen and dining room is featured in the September 2023 issue of Country Sampler magazine.
Kelley, who currently resides in Pittsburgh, graduated from DuBois Area High School in 2000 before leaving the area to finish college. She moved to Pittsburgh in 2009 after her husband, Ryan Kelley, finished his tours in the U.S. military.
After working mainly for nonprofit organizations doing social work, Kelley transitioned to being a stay-at-home mom in 2014, where she currently homeschools her children.
Country Sampler, “a resource for any country decorator,” features country-lifestyle articles, as well as a catalog of decorating products that “provide all the tips and tools you need to make your house a country home,” according to its website. The publication takes viewers inside the homes of country enthusiasts, featuring “room by room home tours,” home decorating tips and authentic and unique styling ideas.
Kelley has always loved to decorate their rental homes over the years, she said.
“When my husband and I bought our home in 2012, I could really make things ours,” she said.
Around four years ago, Kelley says she restyled their home, transitioning from a more “boho-style” to “farmhouse, leaning towards a vintage/antique” theme.
She began posting photos of her home decor work on Instagram, and was contacted by photographers with Country Sampler magazine in September 2022.
In October of last year, Country Sampler did a photo shoot at the Kelleys’ home of her fall decor. The photos feature a rustic, farmhouse-style atmosphere, with various items in autumn colors and accents.
For Kelley, decorating their home has been somewhat of a blank canvas she could make all her own.
“I absolutely love making our home a cozy space,” she said.
She also enjoys the thrill of “junk hunting,” and finding pieces to repurpose, then “styling different spots for different seasons.”
“I’ve always loved art and being creative. Our home has just turned into my canvas to create with.”
The issue featuring the Kelleys’ kitchen and dining room hit the newsstands July 25. Seeing her work in a national publication, she said, feels like a dream.
“I obviously love looking through decor-related magazines,” she said. “Never in a million years would I have expected to see our home featured. It’s an honor to have had them recognize my style and share (it) nationally.”
