The holidays are about six months away. Why wait until the last minute to shop? Answer: You shouldn’t. And you won’t have to if you have a decently stocked gift closet. Some people I know keep their eyes open starting on Dec. 26 and are finished by mid-summer.
It’s more than just the December holidays, though. A small selection of “evergreen” gifts (non-perishable, non-trendy) means you’re prepared for any birthday, anniversary or new baby that comes along.
Building your gift closet doesn’t have to cost much. I always trot out the example of the puzzle depicting the Sistine Chapel ceiling, the perfect gift for a jigsaw-loving relative. Still shrink-wrapped when I found it on half-price day at a thrift shop, it set me back a whopping 35 cents.
If you wait until the last minute, you’re likely to spend more. On the afternoon of the baby shower, you might be tempted to stop at the first store you see and grab the item that’s closest to the door. Compare that with, say, the 89-cent newborn outfit that I bought at a post-holiday clearance sale.
(It wasn’t junk, either, but made by Carter’s. And it was cute as hell. I made the girl-noise when I saw it.)
Incidentally, it doesn’t really have to be a closet. I keep my stash in a cedar chest that I bought for $15 at a garage sale. Not only are my gifts cheap, they’re guaranteed moth-free! Here are some ways to build an evergreen gift stash without breaking the bank.
Clearance tables. Both post-holiday and everyday “last chance” sales can yield amazing finds. In late December the department stores want to get rid of unsold hat-and-scarf sets, gloves, slippers and “executive” gifts (e.g., day minders or business card holders) — and all of these can be held until next year’s Christmas or this year’s Father’s Day. Classic toys (stuffed animals, puzzles, books) can be had for a song if you’re patient enough to wait until Target or Walgreens really wants to get rid of them. (I’ve seen discounts as deep as 90%.) Remember that clearance sales happen in a lot of places: hardware stores, craft shops, drugstores, souvenir stands, supermarkets, office-supply stores.
Tip: If you see a gift set (foodies, spa items) wrapped in a Christmas-y way, break it down and repackage the elements for a January birthday or for Valentine’s Day.
Deal sites. Dealnews, Eversave, My Bargain Buddy and other money-saving sites can be dangerous if you’re a compulsive buyer. Pick your spots, though, and you might see a lovely package of fancy teas that would be perfect for your sister, or a swell set of socket wrenches that would be perfect for your other sister. You’ll spend relatively little to get them, especially if you get site credits for having referred other members.
Social commerce sites. Whether you’re buying a gift item or a discounted gift certificate you can use to buy a gift yourself, Groupon et al. can really stretch your buying dollars. Recently I saw a $20 Old Navy gift certificate for only $10, which could translate into shorts, tank tops or other items (especially if you wait for clearance sales). You could also give the certificate itself, if it has a decently distant expiration date — a massage or a spa day would be a great gift for a babysitter, housecleaner or teacher. And a middle-school-aged niece or nephew might love to get $20 worth of buying power at Old Navy.
Thrift shops. It’s amazing what you can find in the secondhand store — and as noted above, some of it has never been opened. Extra frugal points if your finds are “tag color of the day” specials or found during half-off sales.
Note: GRS readers discussed at great length whether it’s okay to give thrift-store gifts. If this really makes you uncomfortable, don’t do it. But here’s my advice: Get over yourself. Nobody has to know where you bought the present unless you choose to tell them.
Yard sales. We’re heading into the prime garage-sale season. I’ve found beautiful books, stationery and card sets, candles, book-and-toy combos, journals and other items — all new or seemingly unused — that became birthday or Christmas gifts. None of them cost more than $1.
Tip: Toward the end of the day, go back to the yard sale — they might be ready to haggle.
Rummage sales. The ones held indoors are even better than garage sales, because you’re not sweating in 95-degree heat while you shop.
Social media giveaways/contests. Companies will do anything to get noticed — including hand out free clothes, books, sporting equipment, jewelry, TVs, computers or big bundles of cash. (Believe it or not, I once saw a contest whose prize was a year’s worth of health insurance.) To find such contests, try using Twitter hash-tag searches (“#giveaway” or “#freebie”) or checking a Facebook app called “Wildfire.” Or do it the easy way: Find yourself a good freebie blogger and watch for the giveaways you really want.
Tip: Free software such as Roboform will fill in contact info automatically, making your entries more efficient. Also: Google “second-chance drawing” — contest junkies, aka “sweepers,” know that the odds are much better than in the initial drawing.
Take online surveys. You have to be choosy, since some companies ask for a lot and give back relatively little. But some people make a decent little side income answering questions. Depending on the site, you can redeem points for physical prizes, gift cards or even cash. I’ve had a lot of luck with Clear Voice Surveys and Valued Opinions, through which I’ve obtained dozens of Amazon gift cards in the past few years. (These days I don’t keep them, though; I give them away on my website.)
Rewards programs. Got a credit card that gives points? Cash some in for gift cards you can use to shop or that you can give outright. Or join a rewards program like Swagbucks or MyPoints, which let you earn gift cards, prepaid debit cards and other items. I’m particularly fond of Swagbucks, myself; right now I’m squirreling away Amazon gift cards until Black Friday. I’ve also given Christmas gifts obtained through My Coke Rewards: magazine subscriptions, a NASCAR hat, a set of barbecue tools, T-shirts, movie tickets.
Tip: Ask family or friends to save My Coke Reward points for you. Check the recycle bins at work, or outside your apartment house, too.
Gift swaps. Got a gift you don’t want? So do a lot of people. Invite family and friends to bring over items, then trade to your hearts’ content. Try not to be sad, though, if someone brings a package of teas or socket-wrench set that look awfully familiar.

Later this month we’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving, and for many people the Thanksgiving week is a time to sit back and reflect on all of the blessings that we’ve been given throughout the year. For some the week is about getting together with family and enjoying all of the good food. For others, however, Thanksgiving week is all about gearing up to go out and go shopping on Black Friday, or Cyber Monday.
I don’t usually go out on Black Friday, but I’m never one to say never when it comes to finding a deal. There have been several years where I have gone out on Black Friday, with mixed results. In years where I planned ahead, knew exactly what I wanted, and got to the store plenty early, I didn’t have any issues. In years where I just decided last minute to show up and see if I could get a deal – it didn’t work out well at all.
So today I want to go over a few Black Friday shopping tips, and look at some things you can do to prepare for the hottest shopping weekend of the year.
Don’t Just Wing It, Plan Ahead
One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made when shopping on Black Friday was to not really make a plan ahead of time, and to just wing it when it came to getting a deal on the items I was shopping for. When I showed up at the store trying to get a deal, it was a complete mess. I didn’t know where the item I was looking for was going to be, others had showed up way before I did and the store in general was much busier than I had anticipated.
Here’s a video looking at my experience and the madness that ensued at Wal-Mart that night.

So as you can see it was complete madness and mayhem. I hadn’t planned ahead, and it was obvious others had. I saw one family talking on walkie-talkies, coordinating their battle plan!
Websites To Research Your Black Friday Deals
As mentioned above it’s a good idea to plan ahead and to research all of the Black Friday sales ahead of time. Track down and find the best deals on the items that you need.
So where can you go to do all your research? There are a ton of Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping sites you can check out, here are a few of the better ones:
This “most wanted” list from gottadeal.com – will give you an idea of what items are most wanted at each store. Using that information you can prioritize you list and make a battle plan.
Black Friday Most Wanted Deals
8 Tips For Black Friday Shopping
Black Friday shopping starts way ahead of the early morning hours on Friday following Thanksgiving. It starts by doing your homework ahead of
time, and making a battle plan for where you’re going to go, and what you’re going to get.
Make a list in the order of importance: Make a list of things you were planning to buy this year anyway, and then prioritize them in the order that you want them the most – so you can make sure to go and wait in line for those items first.
Make a budget and save up the cash: Make a spending budget for the day, and save up the cash ahead of time to pay for all your purchases. Don’t spend more than you had planned!
Make sure the stores don’t have advance Black Friday deals: Some stores will give you the Black Friday price on the item ahead of time, they start the sales earlier in the week. If you can avoid going to the store on the big day, do it! Some stores also have rewards programs and members will sometimes get a preview shopping event and get Black Friday prices earlier in the week! (for example, Sears does this)
See if the item is available online too: Some stores will have Black Friday deals on their websites as well, so if you can get the deal online and avoid the store, go for it!
Go on a reconnaissance mission: If you’re looking for an item that’s going to be extremely popular, you may even want to go to the store ahead of time and scout out the location of the item so you know where to go. Be careful, however, as some stores will place Black Friday deals throughout the store, so make sure to get that store’s Black Friday sales plan layout.
Go with a friend.. or two: If you’re looking for more than one big ticket item, you may want to go to the store with the friend so you can wait in separate lines and get both of the items you wanted.
Bring some snacks: If you plan on waiting in line for a long time Friday morning, bring along some snacks, and maybe even some coffee (but don’t go overboard or you may lose your spot on line when you go to use the restroom!)
Figure out if you need a voucher for big items: Some stores will hand out vouchers to people in line for more popular or big ticket items to avoid a scramble once the doors open. Find out if your items need a voucher at that store, and if so, make sure to be in line super early.
So start planning for your big shopping day today, and you’ll be sure to get the deals that you wanted and save on your Christmas shopping, unlike those poor slobs like me who just show up!
Cyber Monday Is Great For Deals Too!
If you don’t get the deal you wanted on Black Friday, don’t worry. Cyber Monday – the Monday after Black Friday – also has a ton of great deals, mainly at online stores. Checking the sites linked above will also give you access to a lot of the best online deals to be found then.
Also, remember that while Black Friday has a lot of hype surrounding it, it isn’t always the best time to buy certain items.
When you do finally get around to buying the things you want, make sure you’re taking advantage of all available discounts to get the best possible deal! Also, remember, you can always go the route of buying or making frugal Christmas gifts for your family as well!

Personally, I begin to panic every year as the holiday season approaches. It’s not because I don’t love Christmas. I really do love the holiday season, in general. I just cringe at the thought of all of the money that gets spent unnecessarily, especially mine. And as holiday spending has steadily grown out of control, expectations have come along for the ride. What is now considered to be a reasonable amount of presents is completely different than it was when I was a kid. Nowadays, children are getting showered with big gifts, expensive toys, and things I never would have dreamed of receiving as a child.
My mom once told me that, when she was young, she typically got an orange and some candy in her stocking on Christmas. Seriously. And she was thrilled to get it. She also reminded me that she and her siblings would each get only a few small toys as well. The thing is, this isn’t just some story about walking 10 miles to school, uphill, both ways. It is actually the truth. Of course, it happened 60 years ago, and I cannot believe how times have changed. Kids certainly expect a lot more gifts now, and it doesn’t take much to figure out why things have changed so dramatically.
Doesn’t it seem like the holiday season creeps up on us earlier every single year? It is no longer surprising to see stores decorated for Christmas in early November… way before Thanksgiving! This year, several stores even announced that they would open for Black Friday on Thanksgiving Day, and they made many customers upset in the process.
We are inundated with toy store ads and commercials featuring the tippy tops of Christmas trees hidden by huge piles of gifts. In the meantime, I have also noticed that children’s toys have gotten extremely expensive! My 3-year-old recently asked for a Nintendo 3DS for Christmas. After a quick Google search, I determined that it is a nearly $200 gaming system! My brother has also convinced her that she needs an iPad for Christmas. Obviously, that is not going to happen. Still, it’s hard to avoid the trappings of a consumerist Christmas when we are constantly confronted with expectations that are sometimes unreasonable and wasteful.
So, where does that leave us? What should families do to keep holiday spending under control? Should we sacrifice our own financial well-being in order to deliver the Christmas that advertisers portray? Or should we stick to our guns and only buy the bare minimum for our children, family, and friends?
Since my children are so young, ages 3 and 1, we have decided to keep expectations fairly low. This year, we spent approximately $100 per child, and we actually got them some nice things that I believe they will enjoy. The additional money we have allocated to spend on them this year is going straight into their college savings 529 accounts. How did we do it? It’s fairly simple actually. We’re giving them used stuff.
There, I said it. I give my children used toys and clothes for Christmas. Well, not all of their gifts are used. Still, many of the toys and clothes that will be under the tree are second-hand items. Do I feel bad about it? No, absolutely not. In fact, I feel like it makes perfect sense.
This strategy might feel completely tacky to some….but I have to ask you, “What difference does it make?” My kids are so young that they can’t possibly know or care. Once the gifts are wrapped and under the tree, they will easily blend in with the others. My children will never suspect a thing. Buying some used toys and clothing has allowed me to stretch my holiday dollars much further. I am also able to buy them nicer gifts than I would be able to if I paid sticker price for every one.
Maybe giving used items isn’t in your game plan this Christmas. Still, there are plenty of other ways to stop spending so much money during the holidays. Here are some easy steps that may help you save some of your holiday cash.
Make a holiday gift budget and stick to it. Making a gift budget is an ideal way to keep your spending under control. First, decide who you are buying for. Second, determine what you can afford to spend on them and stick to it. Remember that it is not necessary to buy for every last relative and person you know – and it is unreasonable for them to expect you to do so.
Stop buying for siblings and their spouses. Initially, this didn’t go over too well with my family. However, since my siblings and I are all adults, it seemed silly to insist on buying each other gifts. By the time we finally stopped, we were basically just trading gift cards around. It was totally unnecessary, and I was relieved when it finally came to an end.
Make homemade gifts if you can. Choosing not to buy for extended family members, neighbors, and co-workers can save a ton of money if you are able to get away with it. If you feel obligated to give them something, try making them something instead. If you aren’t crafty, bake some cookies or holidays treats and wrap them with holiday wrapping paper or bows.
Stop buying for pets. Do pets really need Christmas gifts? No, they don’t. If you feel obligated to put something under the tree for your pet, re-gift them something that they already have. I’m giving my dog a bag of dog food for Christmas this year. Trust me, he’ll love it.
Don’t try to keep up with the Joneses. Everyone has some Joneses in their life. Don’t try to emulate their bad Christmas spending decisions. Spend only what is a responsible amount for your family. Remember that the Joneses may or may not be able to afford all of the gifts they bought in the first place.
Obviously, there is so much more to Christmas than rampant consumerism. Maybe lowering Christmas expectations will help us all focus on what is really important during the holiday season – spending time with the people we love.

The Christmas season is here and you want fun ideas to do!
To help make your life easier this year, I created a bucket list full of over 100 activities. You can use it as an actual bucket list or just enjoy scrolling through some fun things to do with friends and family before December 25th.
You will find everything from decorating ideas for your home (from simple snowflakes that are easy enough for kids to make) all the way to DIY recipes for Christmas treats.
Who doesn’t love a good list?
This Christmas bucket list is things you can do with your family around the Christmas season to make it more lively and enjoyable.
I made this list for my own kids, but I thought I would share it with you to use it too!
How can you make your Christmas bucket list more fun?
There are many different ways to make your Christmas bucket list more fun.
One way is to focus on new activities that you haven’t done before. Another way is to add food-related activities, which always make Christmas special.
You can also try incorporating some outdoor activities, even if it’s just for a (snowy) day.
And don’t forget about family traditions! They’re a big part of the holidays and can really enhance the experience.
No matter what you do, make sure you enjoy yourself (and not stress yourself out)! The holidays are a time for celebration and should be spent with loved ones. Merry Christmas!
Memorable Christmas Bucket List
While we love the classic Christmas bucket lists, we also are always looking for unique ideas to add to your holiday bucket list.
Some of these out-of-the-box ideas are pretty sweet and you may want to do them year and year again.
You can find everything from baking cookies to attending a German market to spending Christmas at a lodge. No matter what you choose, make sure you keep in touch with your family and friends during the holidays.
1. Go to Mexico. This is one of our Christmas traditions! There is something relaxing about enjoying the beach while Felix Navidad is playing in the background. (Gift hint… all of the beach gifts can be given to be used on the trip.)
2. Book a Wintery Mountain Stay. On the flip side, there is something magical about sipping hot cocoa while by the fireplace when giant snowflakes are falling outside.
3. Participate in a Neighborhood Luminaires Night. Organize one night for all of your neighbors to put luminaries outlining their driveways. It is a symbolic event with neighbors coming together in peace.
4. Roast Chestnuts. Just like in the famous song by Nat King Cole, it is your turn to roast chestnuts on an open fire.
5. Wrap Presents with Friends. For some wrapping presents is fun, for others it is a task. But everything is always sweeter to do with friends, so plan a time to wrap presents with friends. Appetizers and drinks are optional.
6. Order Matching Christmas Pajamas. This is a popular Christmas tradition for most families. Make sure you order your matching Christmas Pajamas in time. Some of my favorite places to find them are Kohl’s, Macy’s, and Amazon.
7.Wear Matching Christmas Pajamas. Depending on the age of your kids and spouse will depend on how well the matching outfits go over. Make sure to snap pictures!!
8.Kiss Under the Mistletoe. This is a fun Christmas tradition for kids and adults. Kids love this because it’s not just kissing their parents on the cheek, but they get to kiss everyone in the room! Adults love this too because it’s a great opportunity to get some alone time with your significant other.
9. Host a Progressive Dinner. This is a great idea to host a fun holiday party. For each course of a meal, you move houses.
For example, you start at house A for appetizers.
Then, move to House B for dinner.
Finally, wrap up at House C for dessert.
If you have more houses participating, then you can easily stretch to a 7-course meal.
10. Buy Ugly Christmas sweaters. This is a love-hate for many people. Are you totally into buying Christmas sweaters or do you want to shy away? Either way, it is always helpful to have at least one ugly Christmas sweater in your closet.
11. And then host an Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. Time to invite all of your introvert friends for an epic ugly sweater party. The winner walks away with a prize!
12. Go to a Christmas Eve Service. If you’re feeling a little more spiritual, there are many churches that offer Christmas Eve services. If it’s your first time going to one, consider this a good opportunity to introduce the whole family and get them interested in going.
13. Classic Christmas Movie Marathon. This is always a popular idea! Especially one that is next to free to do! Pull up the classic movies and enjoy!
14. Read Christmas Books. This is another one that is uber-popular in our house! We try to stick with Christmas-only books in the month of December. One of our favorites is JK Rowling’s latest book!
15. Go on River Cruises. The river is a great place to find some peace and quiet. You can go during the day or at night.
16. Stay Downtown. Whether you are looking in another state or in your own city, you’ll find a new adventure.
17. Snowman Building Competition. Set up a snowman building competition in your neighborhood and let the winners decide what charity to donate the money raised! Bragging rites until the next competition is held.
18. Shake a Snowglobe. Maybe even add to your snowglobe collection. There is a great children’s book called Snow Globe Family. That is a super fun read.

27. Mail Christmas Cards. This may have been a long-standing tradition for many years and slowly making a comeback. You can take Christmas photos just for the occasion or a collage of photos. Order your Christmas cards here.
28. Read Twas the Night Before Christmas. This Christmas classic must be read at least once on Christmas Eve. Grab your copy of the classic book.

36. Go Snowboarding. Time to shred the slopes. Check out the latest snowboarding gear.
37. Time to Go Tobogganing. What is tobogganing exactly? Much like sledding except you hit the snow-covered slopes and artificial-ice-covered chutes with a toboggan.
38. Give the Gift of Nature. Take your family on an outing to see some beautiful nature! Get out in the fresh air and enjoy the beauty of nature.
39. Make a Snow Angel. This is the perfect activity for kids to do. Yet, very calming and peaceful if you decide to get down in the snow and create snow angels.
40. Hunt for the Perfect Live Tree. Grab your permit and go on a hunt for the perfect Christmas tree. Make sure to bundle up and wear snow boots!
41. Catch Snowflakes on your Tongue. Regardless of your age, this childhood memory needs to be done yearly for your Christmas bucket list. Drop all of your worries off your shoulders as you catch a snowflake on your tongue.
42 Skate on Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks. Skip the indoor rinks and head outside to skate. Even more romantic if the snow is falling.

Holiday Season Bucket List Around Town
One of the best things about the holiday season is there are SO MANY activities to do with no money. You can find something to do each day for free.

61. Watch The Nutcracker Live. I have danced in and seen the Nutcracker so many times that I have lost count. However, I love the production, the costumes, and the music! Make it more magical by taking a young girl who has never seen the Nutcracker before and watching the production through their star-struck eyes.

64. Attend a Christmas Parade. Get out and see the Christmas spirit in all of your favorite holiday traditions. Most cities kick off the holidays with a parade.

Another way to make your holiday season more special is by spending time together over a fire. Whether you build one in your backyard or take advantage of one at a local park, this is a great opportunity for conversation and reflection.

What do I want for Christmas?
This is a question that you may find yourself asking this time of year.
It can be hard to ask someone what they would like as it feels kind of weird and embarrassing! Even worse, is actually telling someone exactly what you want.

So, I have compiled a list of some ideas for what you might like as a gift this Christmas!
To kickstart this list, I asked around to my besties – both women and men what they really want for Christmas. This list is from real people!
Guaranteed you will find the perfect gift for that someone special on your list!

Something to Do

More Ideas
50 ideas not enough? Here’s some more ideas for a frugal Christmas!
The holidays are time for family. Here are some ideas from our friends at Quotacy on how to make the most of this holiday season with your loved ones.
Save more, spend smarter, and make your money go further
The holiday season is a very hectic time, and if you’re not careful, it can easily sneak up on you. If you’re like me, you’ve entered November without much money set aside for gifts or celebrations and you’re starting to sweat about your budget.
Scrambling for cash during the holidays can feel like treading water, but there are lots of opportunities to save money and cut costs if you know where to look.
Make a budget and stick to it
Setting limits on how much you’re willing to spend for each person on your list will help keep you focused on getting the most out of your holiday budget.
Speaking from experience, my family typically sets limits on how much you’re allowed to spend on one another – $50 max for your immediate family, $20 max for any extended family.
In practice, those limits tend to become more like guidelines, but they can help you set a baseline budget to plan for during the holiday months.
Start shopping ASAP
The longer you’re on the hunt for deals, the more likely you are to stumble across them. If you can get started before December actually begins, you can scoop up a few amazing deals during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Keeping your eyes peeled early on in the holiday season can give you more time to consider exactly what you want to get for each person. Being alert and keeping an eye on those items will help you pounce on flash deals as they come up.
Automate your savings
If you’ve got a savings account that offers automatic deposits, cranking up the rate at which money goes in can help you grow a holiday budget without even thinking about it.
When I need to save money in the short term, I tend to pump up my weekly contributions to my savings account. This helps me lock my money away until I’m sure I want to spend it.
Cancel a few subscriptions
Even though cold, snowy days are perfect for curling up on the couch and bingeing a show on Netflix or Hulu, taking a month-long break from a few of your subscription services can help give you a bit more breathing room for gifts and events.
Pick one service you absolutely can’t live without to keep you entertained, and use the subscription fees for the rest of them to spruce up your holiday party with a few extra treats. Then, when you come back to them in January, you’ll have a whole new set of shows to power through.
Cut down on trips out
This is an evergreen savings suggestion, but during the holidays, opting to stay in could help you save more than just the price of dinner.
If you’re in an area that gets snow, the increased traffic will make each trip out burn through more fuel. Additionally, bad weather increases your odds of being involved in an accident, so staying in can often mean staying safe.
Check your pockets
If you’re like me, you’ve probably forgotten about some of the things in your wallet. However, taking the time to dig past your go-to cards can reveal some hidden treasures.
First off: Gift cards. Got 5 bucks left at Starbucks? Surprise a family member with a bag of nice coffee. $3 left over at Target? That’s a couple of candy bars to fill a stocking.
If you’ve got rewards points or cash back built up on your cards, the holidays can be a good time to spend them. Performing a self-audit on your wallet can help you discover money that you didn’t know you had.
Combine your orders
Do you ever notice how stores start promoting big purchase sales around the holidays? “Spend over $300 and get 15% off!” This helps them incentivize shoppers to spend more. You can take advantage of this by teaming up with a friend to get both of your holiday shopping done at once.
In addition to saving more on a bulk order, you’ll be able to take full advantage of BOGO deals without having to find somewhere to put the second item.
Who knows, you might catch them eyeing something they want, and be able to take another trip back and cross them off your list.
Look everywhere for coupons and deals
Everyone knows about online coupons these days, but there are many more ways to save if you know where to look.
Digging through your junk mail can be a good way to scoop up deals from local stores. Local businesses will also offer discounts via local newspapers and magazines as well, so popping by a magazine rack can help you track down deals in your area.
Many crafters, artists, and other small creators who own Etsy stores or eBay accounts are also looking to make a bit of last-minute money to spend on their families.
Established creators often put their excess stock on sale in the weeks before the end of the year, and many artists take extra commissions to help them pay for their own celebrations.
Buy (or make) a few cheap “quickie” gifts
Going out and tracking down trinkets for everyone in your office can be time consuming, and it’ll drain your holiday savings, too.
Instead, taking one trip and buying several of the same inexpensive gift at once can help you be sure you aren’t empty handed when a surprise gift-giver catches you off-guard.
For example, you can wrap up cocoa packets, candy canes, and mini marshmallows, then give them out as instant cocoa sets. For bonus points, head to a thrift store and buy a few mugs to include as well.
Turn your holiday parties into pot lucks
Another perennial favorite – pot lucks! If you’re hosting a dinner party, asking your guests to help out with dishes can add variety to the meal, as well as saving you money.
Have your guests bring hot food in crock pots, or let them show up early with food that’s ready to cook. Appetizers and finger food work great for this, and a menu made out of those options often ends up being more fun than a sit-down dinner.
Change up your gift-giving traditions
Instead of spreading yourself thin to get your entire family or office gifts, organizing a secret Santa pool can help you focus on finding something meaningful for one person in particular.
If organizing a secret Santa exchange is too complicated, a white elephant party is a fun way to recycle old gifts you’ve never gotten around to using. Who knows, your secondhand waffle iron might be exactly what someone wants!

Christmas time is only a month and a half away! At our house it’s one of the most joyous times of the year as we celebrate the birth of our savior, and revel in all the blessings we have seen in our lives during the year. They lived in a modest 1,800 square foot home. They both drove Buick’s that were both completely paid off.
He retired from a manufacturing plant and she a grade school as an English teacher.
Despite their simple ways, they were both millionaires and were one of the first clients I landed as a financial advisor.
So what was the secret sauce? Did he buy Apple stock a few decades ago? Was it some crazy pension buy out? A salty family inheritance?
How about none of the above.
When I asked the husband what their secret was he shared the story about how every time he received his paycheck he would ALWAYS take a portion and purchase savings bonds (Remember: this was long before 401k plans).
That simple routine, which became a good flippin’ amazing financial habit, was the catalyst for them becoming millionaires.
It doesn’t matter if your goal is to become debt free, increase your savings, or become millionaires; all off them require you have good financial habits.
Everybody wants to be financially stable, but unless you have plan to get you there, it’s not going to happen.
Here are 27 that will enable you to set (and reach) your financial goals.
1. Live Within Your Means
This strategy is the foundation of all good financial habits. In fact, I’m not exaggerating when I say there will be no point in setting good financial goals until and unless you come to the point where you can live beneath your means.
Seriously.
There’s nothing complicated or strategic about this habit. If you take home $5,000 each month, you live on $4,500 – and bank the rest. As your savings and investments grow, your financial situation will improve dramatically.
2. Pay Yourself, You Deserve It
If you’re having trouble with the whole concept of living beneath your means, it’s time to pay yourself first. If you have a 401k (or some other employer retirement account) this is a simple way to automate the process of saving money. Allocate a certain percentage, or even a certain dollar amount, to come out of your pay each pay period, before you even see it.
Without you even noticing it, the money is transferred to savings and investment accounts, and turns into real money as the years pass. If you don’t have an employer sponsored plan like a 401k, see #17.
3. Give Yourself a Consistent Raise
Good financial goals are more easily achieved if you can build progress into your savings and investment funding. You can do this gradually by increasing your payroll savings once each year.
You can do this almost painlessly by increasing the savings payroll deduction – whether it is for retirement or some other savings or investment account – by increasing your deduction by one percentage point per year.
Let’s say you are participating in your company’s 401(k) plan with 6% of your pay in order to take advantage of the company‘s 50% matching contribution. In the coming year, increase your contribution to 7%. Plan on doing that each year, until you meet the maximum contribution you’re allowed to make.
While this is a great start, the reality is you need to save at least 20% of your income if you have any hope of retiring early (or at all). If you want to get super ambitious and retire at 30, you can take a page out this guy’s playbook and save over 50%.
When I encounter someone only saving around 5% I challenge to increase it by 1% each quarter until they reach at least 10%. From there adjust I have them adjust accordingly so they barely feel the extra amount deducted from their paycheck.
4. Buy Value
By “buy value,” I mean you neither by the cheapest goods, nor the most expensive. Instead, you look to buy the best value for the money. Sometimes it’s worth it to cough up a little extra dough for a product you know will last, rather than paying bottom-dollar for shoddy merchandise you’ll have to constantly replace.
On the flip side, keep in mind not all products are better simply because they’re more expensive – often they’re just more expensive because of perception. Read reviews and shop around.
5. If You Have to Borrow, You Can’t Afford It
Credit is an awesome thing when you’re buying something big, like a house or a car. Very few people have $150K sitting around in cash to buy a home, so for those things, borrowing makes sense. But adopting good financial habits means avoiding schemes to stretch your paycheck. Credit cards are probably the most common way to do this.
6. Pay Your Bills Ahead of Time
Paying bills late is another strategy to stretch the paycheck. But it’s also kind of like robbing Peter to pay Paul. All it does is give you a false sense of how much money you have, and then puts you under tremendous pressure to cover the difference later. By paying your bills ahead of time, you will gain more control over your finances, and that will make it easier to adopt good financial habits.
My wife is the queen at this! Instead of waiting until she receives our credit card bill, she logs into our accounts and pays it off in the middle of the month. There’s no way she’s allowing any interest to accrue!
7. Read One Financial Book Each Year
If you want to become financially stable, you’ll have to seek advice from the financial masters. Easy to do, since nearly every one of them has at least one book available.
Take advantage of that knowledge. If you only get three or four bankable ideas from reading a single book, think about how many you’ll get from reading a dozen or more.
Some of the personal finance books that I’ve enjoyed over the years include: Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover, David Bach’s Smart The Automatic Millionaire, Ramit Sethi’s I Will Teach You to Be Rich. And…well there is of course the book on the left:
Shameless plug: My book, Soldier of Finance, can be purchased here.
8. Track Your Spending
If you don’t have a budget, then you probably don’t have even a remote idea where all of your money is going. This is one of those good financial habits you absolutely must adopt you if want to get control of your finances.
By tracking your spending, you will be able to identify the areas of excess. Eating out for 50% of your meals? Cut that back to even 25% and cook or brown bag the rest, and you’ll have a nice chunk of change to contribute to paying down debt or building up your savings.
Start tracking your spending now – you may be surprised to find where your money is actually going.
9. Spend Less Time Watching TV
Don’t think watching TV has anything to do with becoming financially stable? Guess what? TV is nothing but a giant advertising venue, and I’m not just talking about the commercials. Even TV shows advertise certain wares through a little thing called product placement.
It’s a place where “sponsors” come to peddle their wares, and often, to make you feel insecure because you’re not buying what they’re selling.
Much of our spending, especially impulse spending, is driven by time spent in front of the TV. The less time you spend watching it – and the ads it bombards you with – the less money you’ll feel compelled to spend on things you don’t need.
Plus, by watching less TV you can read more books!
10. Balance Your Checkbook Regularly
With online banking, it’s easy to ignore this step. After all, the balance is available to be checked every day. But the balance does not reflect upcoming charges or outstanding checks. If you aren’t fully aware of these, it could lead to an undersized balance, or even bounced check fees. No bueno.
Balancing your checkbook helps you to avoid these pitfalls, so you know exactly how much cash you have at all times.
11. Shop Without Your Credit Cards
Not only will this keep you from running up your credit card balances, but if you have to use cash or your debit card to make your purchases, there’s a very good chance you will spend less money than you would if you are shopping with a credit card, because you can’t just pay it off later.
It’s real money, being used right now, which helps you make a wiser decision in the checkout line.
12. Pay More Than the Minimum on Your Credit Cards
And speaking of credit cards, if you want to become financially stable, you will need to get rid of those balances. If you haven’t been successful in paying off your credit cards in the past, then you should commit to paying more than the minimum payment due.
On top of paying more than a minimum, you should consider consolidating your credit card debt under a single 0% balance transfer card. Once you do this all those high interest cards will be under a since zero interest card saving you money.
This will speed up the payoff of your credit cards without having to come up with huge sums of money to do it. You will simply be accelerating the payoff, and if you pay enough, it will happen more quickly than you think.
Pay attention to your credit card statements. They will often tell you how long it will take to pay off your balance if you only pay the minimum payment, and how long it will take if you pay a fixed amount slightly higher than the minimum payment. Most of the time, there’s a difference of several years.
Yes, I said years.
13. Dust Off That Business Idea You’ve Been Putting Off
Do you have a business idea you have been putting off for quite awhile? You may want to give it a serious try. The internet has made starting and running a business easier and less expensive than ever. Case in point example is my buddy, Steve Chou, who was able to replace his wife’s $100k income by launching an online store.
Another example closer to home is my wife’s blog. She was able to replace her full-time income from her corporate job after starting her blog in about a year.
Best of all, you can run a side business for as long as you like, and that can provide you with an extra source of income. It’s important to set good financial goals, but you also have to carry them through. Starting a business is one way to do that – even if you only do it on a part-time basis
14. Learn to Say “No” to Yourself
This is important when you are shopping, or just out and about. This is really about getting control of impulse buying. You’re out somewhere, and you see some item you like, and you buy it because it doesn’t cost that much. Even worse is the ability to purchase things online nowadays and have it delivered to your doorstep in just a few days. If you do that several times a week, the spending can really add up.
Making just 20 impulse purchases (or fancy coffees) per month at an average of “only” $5, adds up to $100 spent on stuff you really don’t need. That’s $100 which isn’t going into savings or investments, or to paying down debt.
One trick is to enforce a “72 Hour Rule” on any purchases, especially online items. If you really think you need to buy <fill in the blank>, after you add it to your cart make yourself wait 72 hours before you purchase it. After 3 days you should get a good feel whether you really need the item or if you just want it (and don’t need it at all).
15. Learn to Say “No” to Your Kids
If you have children, learning to say “no” to them is doubly important. First, kids being kids, they always want something. And that something tends to get more expensive as they get older. You can save a lot of money by learning to say “no” to the random things they see and decide they can’t live without.
Keep in mind, I’m not telling you not to give your kids birthday or Christmas gifts, or things they truly need. Rather, it’s about their own impulse buying – seeing something and wanting it – but instead, they’re using your money. Telling them “no” will keep more money in your pocket.
But the second issue is even more important.
How you spend money, and particularly how you spend it on your children, has important implications for the attitude they will have toward money when they grow up. Though saying “no” isn’t always easy, it’s a way of teaching an important financial lesson. It teaches your kids they can’t have all the candy in the store, and that’s something they need to grasp in preparation for adult life.
16. Buy Term and Invest the Difference
Everyone needs life insurance, but everyone complains about how expensive it is to buy it.
There is a better way.
Buy term life insurance. Because it costs only a fraction of what whole life costs, you not only save money on the premiums, but you can buy more coverage. And that money you save on the premiums can be invested to build a large investment for the future, which by itself is its own form of insurance.
17. Start a Retirement Savings Plan
Good financial habits can be elusive if you don’t have a retirement savings plan of any kind. But if you don’t have a plan through your employer, there are plenty of options. You can open up a self-directed traditional IRA or a Roth IRA through tons of different platforms. Either will provide the type of income tax deferral that is the essential to building a healthy nest egg for retirement.
If you don’t have a retirement savings plan, what are you waiting for? Set one up today, and start funding it with any money you have available.
Seriously. It’s better to start contributing a little bit now than to wait until you can contribute a lot. You can even fund it through payroll savings deductions through your employer. Our top choice is Ally Invest with the rest of best options for IRA’s here.
18. Refresh Your Emergency Fund on a Regular Basis
There’s a lot of talk on the web about building an emergency fund, but far less in regard to replenishing it once you’ve taken money out of it. And if your living expenses increase over the years, you can even find your emergency fund is no longer adequate.
Take a look at your emergency fund at least once each year, and determine if it is sufficient to cover at least 3 to 6 months of living expenses, based on your current expense level. If it isn’t, set up a plan to refresh it as needed. It’s hard to remain financially stable without a well-stocked emergency fund.
19. Save For Specific Goals
A lot of people understand the importance of saving money in an emergency fund, and for retirement. But less well understood is saving for specific goals. Those goals could include saving money for your children’s college education, saving money to replace your car without having to take a loan, or saving money to make major repairs on your .home.
This isn’t just about saving money – it’s also about becoming self-funding. That means you pay cash for the kinds of major things other people borrow money for.
I’m a huge believer in revisiting your goals every 90 days. I started this over 4 years ago and I’ve seen my revenue nearly triple while taking more days off than I ever have. So yes, I’m a HUGE advocate of goal setting. Here’s a quick peak on my last quarters goals as well as my goals for 2015.
20. Know What You’re Paying
A lot of people are not terribly concerned with investment fees, so long as their portfolios are growing in value. But there’s more going on with investment fees than people normally think. A difference of just 1% in investment fees can make a substantial difference over time.
For example, let’s say you have a $20,000 investment account earning 10% per year. If you pay 2% in investment fees, that will give you a net return of 8%. Over a ten year period, the investment will grow to $43,179.
But let’s say you have the same investment, but you pay only 1% in investment fees. That will give you a net annual return of 9%. After ten years, the investment will grow to $47,347.
That’s a difference of well over $4,000 over ten years. The difference is even more dramatic over 20, 30, or 40 years.
It’s also important to understand the type of investment you own and the fees associated with it. Recently, I had a new prospective client that owned a variable annuity. She didn’t understand how it worked or what she was paying per year to own it. She actually thought she was only paying $50 per year to own it when, in fact, she was paying over $3,500!
Moral of the story: investment fees matter!
21. Give to Others
This could donating your time to a charity or cause, tithing, or cooking a meal for a friend in need. The point is to put others needs before yours.
It’s easy to put our own worries and concerns at the forefront but when you start focusing on others, the payback is unmeasurable.
22. Become the Go To Guy/Girl at Work
Everybody wants a raise at work, but not everyone wants to do what it takes to get one – especially in a tight job market. The same is true for promotions.
But if you want to fast-track your career, work to become the go-to guy or gal in your office. That means taking on meatier work assignments and stepping up to help management and coworkers when needed. It’s not easy, and it’s not an immediate fix, but it can really payoff in the long run.
23. Get to Work 15 Minutes Early Each Day
By getting to work 15 minutes early each day, you can dramatically improve your work performance, and even reduce your stress levels. Just taking the extra time to organize your day, such as creating a to-do list that makes sure you get the most important tasks completed first, can give you a jump on the competition – your coworkers.
That can be an important part of improving both your productivity and your visibility at work. And that can eventually lead to a bigger paycheck.
24. Cut Down on Your Spending Allowance
Even people who budget can sometimes be lax when it comes to their personal spending allowance. That’s the money you use for entertainment, for casual spending, and for that latte at Starbucks.
Everyone needs a certain amount of free-spending built into their budget, but it’s equally important to make sure it doesn’t get out of control. Since it tends to be spent in small amounts over long periods of time, it’s easy to get carried away with spending on this front.
Start by giving yourself a fixed allowance for free-spending each month. Then gradually begin cutting it down to a more manageable number.
25. Cut Down on Restaurant Meals
Eating in restaurants has become so common these days we hardly notice it. But if you find yourself eating out three, four or more times per week, your restaurant habit has become a major expense without you even realizing it.
Track the number of times you eat out each week, and begin reducing it. This is an excellent way to save money painlessly. And it may force you to sharpen your cooking skills. The Food Network is there to help you with that, should you need it.
26. Drive Your Car a Few Years Longer
If you are accustomed to taking out five year loans on your cars, then replacing them as soon as the loan is paid off, you need to realize that’s a very expensive way to drive. The longer you drive it after the loan is paid off, the less expensive your auto expense will be. That’s another of those good financial habits that will point you in the right direction, and bring you to financial stability more quickly.
The average age of a car in the US is now 11.4 years. That isn’t to say you have to drive your car until it dies, but you should be able to drive it for as long as 10 years. And for the love of man, repeat after me:
Reliable transportation does NOT mean you have to buy a brand new car.
If you are paying $500 a month for a car payment, and you can keep the car an extra five years after, that will be an extra $30,000 in your bank account ($500 X 60 months). You’ll lose some of that to repair bills, but nothing close to $30,000.
27. Learn to Love the House You Live In
Some people make it a practice to trade up on their home every time they get a promotion or a new job. If you want to become financially stable, it’s critical you learn to live beneath your means – which was the first strategy on this list.
If you can keep your house payment stable while your income rises, you can redirect the additional income into savings, investments, and non-housing debt. That will improve your financial situation a lot more quickly and efficiently than buying a larger and more expensive home every few years.
So there you go – 27 good financial habits that you need to not go broke – and to become financially stable. Pick just a few of them, and watch your finances get better.
