Online banking has made managing money easier than ever. However, it has also led most people to rely solely on digital assets.
Precious metals are a popular investment choice for people wishing to buy a tangible asset that retains its value over time. In particular, gold and silver generally maintain their value even when the stock market faces major financial fluctuations.
They also do well in times of inflation and political uncertainties. When traditional stocks fluctuate due to these external factors, precious metals only become more valuable.
Investors who prefer a hands-off approach have the option of purchasing gold and silver stocks. These stocks are traded daily just like any other stock. However, many people prefer to keep a physical store of their precious metal.
While relatively illiquid, buying physical gold and silver is typically viewed as a long-term investment. It’s certainly a practical option if you’re concerned about inflation or the future of fiat currency.
Best Places to Buy Gold and Silver Online
eBay and Craigslist are both great places to start. But unless you’re confident that you’re dealing with a reputable seller, you might want to look into other sites that specialize in precious metals.
To help you find the best place to buy gold and silver, we’ve compiled a list of the best online gold dealers.

Plus, the Silver Gold Bull sales team is full of seasoned veterans, so you can get answers to your questions from people who truly know their stuff.
The company sells a wide range of gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper, and collectibles online and over the phone.
Gainesville Coins
With an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, Gainesville Coins has been keeping customers happy for more than ten years.
In fact, the company has also received a five-star rating from the National Inflation Association—the only bullion dealer to receive such a distinction.

The company also sells pre-1933 gold and has an extensive clearance section with time-sensitive deals. In addition, you can calculate shipping based on your zip code and items placed in your cart. Only Florida residents pay sales tax on their purchases.

APMEX (American Precious Metals Exchange)
APMEX is one of the largest online dealers in the world, which allows it to pass along savings to its customers. This is due to the sheer volume of business it does each day. Not only can you buy silver, gold, and other metals, you can also sell or trade from your current holdings.
The selection is huge, covering the major precious metals, historic gold coins, “elite” coins, old banknotes, and foreign coins. It also has an extensive collectibles section with rare coins and currency from around the world.

Scottsdale Mint (formerly Scottsdale Silver) focuses on silver and gold while also offering each in different collectible series. They sell both types of metal in coins, bullion bars, and rounds, with a particular premium set on artistic minting.
For example, some recent popular collectible sets include a Vikings series and a Godfather set featuring images from the iconic movie franchise.
To qualify for free shipping with insurance, you must make a minimum purchase of $500. This may seem steep compared to some other companies providing free shipping at $99. However, much of the allure of Scottsdale Mint comes from the company’s creative minting process.

Silver.com

The Basics of Precious Metals
Before buying gold or silver, it’s important to understand the different forms they come in. Each type has its pros and cons. Some people focus on one kind they prefer, while others create a diverse mix of different kinds. Before you buy precious metals, figure out which strategy is best for you.
Silver
Let’s start by talking about silver. Typically, you can buy silver either in the form of bullion or junk silver. Silver bullion refers to silver as a bar, coin, ingot, or round.
Silver Coins
The most popular silver coins you’ll come across are as follows:
American Silver Eagle
Canadian Silver Maple Leaf
British Silver Britannia
Mexican Silver Libertad
Austrian Silver Philharmonic
South African Silver Krugerrand
Australian Silver Kangaroo
Chinese Silver Panda
Junk Silver
Junk silver, on the other hand, is any type of old U.S. currency containing real silver. Any U.S. half-quarters, quarters, or dimes minted before 1965 are considered junk silver. However, in reality, they aren’t very junky at all.
You can sometimes find junk silver below the spot price. This can often allow you to start with a profit on your investment.
Silver Rounds
Silver rounds are privately minted silver pieces shaped like coins but produced by private mints. They are not government minted or legal tender, so they are not referred to as coins. The most popular silver round is the American Silver Buffalo. However, Scottsdale Mint also produces some beautiful rounds called “Omnia.”
Gold
Gold also comes in bars and coins, each one giving you a different type of entry point into precious metal investing. Buying gold coins is the easiest way for gold investors to start because you can begin by just purchasing a few at a low price point.
Gold Coins
The most popular gold coins to buy are as follows:
American Gold Eagle
Canadian Gold Maple Leaf
British Gold Britannia
British Gold Queen’s Beast
Mexican Gold Libertad
Austrian Gold Philharmonic
South African Gold Krugerrand
Australian Gold Kangaroo
Chinese Gold Panda
Gold Rounds
Similar to silver rounds, the most popular is the American Gold Buffalo.
Perhaps you’re stocking up as a hedge against inflation or to use as currency in a potential crisis. If so, you’ll find that coins of any type (gold or silver) will be easier to barter with than bars.
If you decide to buy bars, you can get them in different sizes to suit your space or budget. For example, you can purchase 1 to 10-ounce gold bars or up to 100-ounce silver bars. You can even find bars at just a fraction of an ounce if you want to start small.
One of the most significant advantages of this tactic is that you get the lowest premium when you buy larger bars. So while they might not be as easy to sell when you’re ready, you’ll get a better value if you can make that large of an investment upfront.
Copper
While silver and gold are the most popular, there are other precious metals to consider as well. For example, copper also comes in bars, rounds, and coins and is very affordable for novice investors.
Some experts believe it’s a wise investment opportunity because of its rising demand and shrinking supply.
Platinum and Palladium
Platinum is perhaps the most precious of all metals. It’s 15x rarer than gold, and its value exceeds that of gold. Platinum is usually sold as coins minted in the U.S., Canada, or Australia.
Palladium is similar to platinum in its properties and is actually 30x rarer than gold. Because these metals are so rare, not many people invest in them. However, a growing number of investors are adding them to their portfolios. It’s something you may want to consider as well.
Gold and Silver: Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the best place to buy gold?
The two best places to buy gold are online retailers and local coin shops.
Online retailers, such as the ones we’ve listed above, offer a wide selection of gold coins, bars, and rounds at competitive prices. These retailers often offer free shipping and insurance, making it easy and convenient to buy gold from the comfort of your own home.
Local coin shops are another great option if you want to prefer gold in person. These shops often have a knowledgeable staff who can help you find the right gold products for your needs and budget. You may also be able to negotiate on price of the gold.
Where is the best place to buy silver?
The best place to buy silver is typically also the best place to buy gold: online dealers and local shops. These options provide a wide range of products to choose from and allow you to compare prices and quality before making a purchase.
Online dealers offer the convenience of shopping from home, while local shops provide the advantage of in-person interaction with knowledgeable staff who can answer your questions and guide you towards the right products for your investment goals.
Whether you want to buy silver coins or silver bars, these options typically offer competitive prices, flexible shipping policies, and convenient payment options.
We recommend checking out at least a few of the best online gold dealers we mentioned above, regardless of what your needs are. Compare prices, selection, and shipping policies on numerous sites.
What is the cheapest way to buy gold and silver?
The most cost-effective method of acquiring gold and silver is by buying bars. They tend to have smaller markups compared to spot prices compared to coins, due to their lower production costs.
Buying in bulk is also a smart way to lower the cost per ounce as many online dealers offer discounts for larger purchases.
Is it safe to buy gold and silver online?
Buying precious metals online is as safe as any other transaction you make online. It’s also just as safe to buy online is as it is to buy from a physical retailer. The key is to buy gold and silver from a reputable gold dealer.
Is it better to buy gold coins or bars?
There is no right or wrong answer to this question. It depends on your situation, your needs, your budget, and what you prefer. As mentioned, it’s typically cheaper to buy gold bars. However, you will most likely get a better value from gold coins when it comes time to sell your gold.
Gold and silver coins and small bars offer more flexibility when it comes time to sell. Owning smaller units of gold and silver allows you to sell only a portion of your precious metals instead of your whole portfolio.
How much gold and silver should I own?
Experts recommend holding 5-25% of your net worth in precious metals. However, it depends on your goals, your situation, and risk tolerance. Precious metals can be a great addition to your portfolio as long as you know why you’re adding it.
Can I store gold at home?
Storing gold in your home offers a sense of security and privacy for your valuable assets. As a form of wealth preservation, it provides complete control without the need for outside storage. However, it’s crucial to be mindful of potential security threats and to ensure your assets are adequately insured.
To mitigate these risks, it’s advisable to implement a secure storage system. Ultimately, home storage is a viable solution for individuals who value personal ownership and control of their gold holdings.
GuideWell Mutual Holding Corp., the parent company of health insurer Florida Blue, is the biggest company headquartered in Jacksonville.
But as a mutual holding company that doesn’t publicly report financial results, we don’t often have a chance to know how big it is.
However, as the company announced the appointment of a new chief financial officer Sept. 27, its news release indicated GuideWell has grown significantly in just the last two years.
The announcement of Jeffrey Goddard’s appointment said GuideWell has grown into a “health solutions enterprise” with annual revenue of $30 billion.
That would make GuideWell one of the 150 largest U.S. companies, based on Fortune 500 data. But Fortune magazine’s annual list of largest companies doesn’t include businesses that don’t publicly report data.
Just two years ago, GuideWell was saying annual revenue was at $20 billion.
The company did expand in February 2022 with the acquisition of Triple-S Management Corp., licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance brand in Puerto Rico, adding about $4 billion in revenue.
Besides Florida Blue and Triple-S, GuideWell said it owns or has significant interests in several other health care businesses.
GuideWell is about double the size of the largest Jacksonville-based company in the Fortune 500.
Railroad company CSX Corp. ranked 279th with 2022 revenue of $14.86 billion.
GuideWell said Goddard joined the company as executive vice president and CFO, succeeding Thurman Justice, who took over leadership of the managed care business at Triple-S.
Goddard was most recently senior vice president and CFO for CVS Caremark.
ICE: Black Knight deal helps mortgage ‘ecosystem’
After Intercontinental Exchange Inc. agreed in May 2022 to acquire Jacksonville-based mortgage technology firm Black Knight Inc., antitrust officials were concerned the deal would give ICE too much control over mortgage technology in the U.S.
Now that the deal is completed, ICE officials said in a Sept. 28 conference call the merged businesses will benefit everyone involved in the mortgage process.
Ben Jackson, president of ICE’s mortgage technology business, said the company was convinced when it agreed to buy Black Knight that the deal would result in an improved mortgage workflow.
“Over the last 16 months, our confidence in that strategic vision has only increased,” he said.
ICE’s technology will be able to handle mortgage loans from origination to final settlement “in one digital ecosystem,” Jackson said.
Black Knight dominated the market for technology for servicing existing home loans, handling processing for nearly two-thirds of all first mortgage loans.
ICE is the market leader in technology for originating mortgage loans.
“The breadth and depth of what we have assembled touches nearly every home mortgage in the United States and is a platform that we believe will enable us to provide the foundation for improving risk management in this major consumer credit market,” ICE Chief Executive Jeff Sprecher said in the conference call.
“Together with Black Knight, ICE is well positioned to improve the execution and subsequent settlement and servicing of U.S. home mortgages, the major credit exposure for most U.S. consumers,” he said.
To satisfy antitrust concerns and gain Federal Trade Commission approval for the merger, the companies agreed to sell off Black Knight’s loan origination technology business called Empower and its data subsidiary Optimal Blue.
However, the deals to sell those units to Constellation Software Inc. included an agreement that will give ICE mortgage technology clients access to Optimal Blue’s data services under its new ownership.
While ICE’s mortgage technology operations serve business customers, Sprecher said the merged company will be able to provide data that will help its clients deal with consumers.
“With Black Knight, we are now in a position to see data and micro trends that give us valuable insight into existing homeowners and prospective homeowners in the United States,” he said.
Black Knight is a successor to a long line of Jacksonville-based companies that have provided mortgage technology services since the 1960s.
ICE has not announced any specific plans for Black Knight’s Jacksonville operations after the merger.
A company spokesperson said in an emailed statement Oct. 3: “With about two thousand people already in Jacksonville, and room to grow, it will quickly become an important part of ICE’s operations.”
Atlanta-based ICE provides financial technology in a number of areas and is best known as operator of the New York Stock Exchange.
Jackson said in the conference call that with Black Knight added to the company, the mortgage technology business will increase from 14% of ICE’s total revenue to 25%.
St. Joe gains help chairman’s fund
Reuters news service reported that a strong third-quarter stock performance for The St. Joe Co. helped its chairman’s mutual fund produce some of the best returns for the quarter.
St. Joe Chairman Bruce Berkowitz’s Fairholme Fund controls about 34% of the company’s stock, according to its latest Securities and Exchange Commission filings, and Reuters said the fund has more than 80% of its assets in St. Joe stock.
As the overall market fell in the third quarter, St. Joe’s stock rose 14%, with a big gain in late July after the real estate development company reported strong third-quarter earnings.
As a result, Fairholme rose 17% in the quarter while another fund with a large stake in St. Joe, the Schwartz Value Focused Fund, rose nearly 15%, Reuters said.
Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 2.6% and the S&P 500 fell 3.6% in the quarter.
Panama City Beach-based St. Joe was a long-time conglomerate headquartered in Jacksonville before selling off its other businesses to focus on real estate development.
The company moved the headquarters to the Florida Panhandle in 2010 to be closer to its real estate holdings.
High rates affect Dream Finders, other homebuilders
Dream Finders Homes Inc. was the best-performing stock among Jacksonville-based companies in the first half of 2023, nearly tripling in price.
However, continued high interest rates are hurting the homebuilder sector, and Dream Finders’ stock has dropped sharply since peaking in early August.
The stock ended the third quarter at $22.23, down nearly 30% from its Aug. 7 peak of $31.60 and down nearly 10% for the entire third quarter.
However, Dream Finders still had a net gain of more than 150% for the first nine months of the year.
FPL parent’s stock drops sharply
NextEra Energy Inc.’s stock dropped sharply after a related business said it was cutting its growth expectations.
Juno Beach-based NextEra is the parent company of Florida Power & Light, which provides electricity to 5.8 million Florida customers. It serves most of the state’s East Coast outside of Jacksonville.
NextEra formed a limited partnership in 2014 called NextEra Energy Partners, or NEP, to own and manage clean energy projects.
The limited partnership announced Sept. 27 it was cutting the expected growth rates for distributions to its shareholders to 5% to 8%, with a target growth rate of 6%, down from the previous level of 12% to 15%.
NEP cited tighter monetary policy and higher interest rates for the cut.
That caused NEP units to lose more than half their value, falling from about $50 two weeks earlier to a low of $24.25 on Oct. 2.
NextEra’s stock fell from the upper $60s to a low of $50.18 on Oct. 2.
Wells Fargo analyst Neil Kalton cut his rating on NEP from “overweight” to “equal weight” Oct. 2 and cut his price target from $80 to $33.
“Despite a still strong secular backdrop for renewables and a high quality sponsor (NEE), NEP’s existing cost of capital raises questions about the partnership’s ability to execute on growth initiatives,” Kalton said in his research note.
In a Sept. 28 note, J.P. Morgan analyst Jeremy Tonet said he was maintaining his “overweight” rating on NextEra Energy Inc., or NEE, after the NEP announcement.
“While these concerns and sharp NEP weakness could weigh on NEE in the near-term, we see the sell off as overdone. We still see FPL as one of the best utilities in the country (benefiting from a constructive regulatory backdrop and favorable economic trends),” Tonet said.
FEC Railway expanding intermodal services
The Jacksonville-based Florida East Coast Railway announced a deal Sept. 27 that will expand its intermodal business.
FEC, which operates a 351-mile railroad from Jacksonville to Miami, said it agreed with Norfolk Southern Corp. to provide intermodal service at FEC terminals in Fort Pierce and Fort Lauderdale.
Norfolk Southern was already providing services at FEC terminals in Miami and Titusville, it said.
Atlanta-based Norfolk Southern is the main competitor of CSX, providing railroad services in much of the Eastern U.S.
Its railroad connects to FEC’s rail line in Jacksonville.
FEC said the new agreements will help it offer services for freight customers to more U.S. cities outside of Florida.
FEC is owned by GMXT, the transportation subsidiary of Mexico City-based Grupo Mexico.
GMXT acquired the Florida railroad in 2017.
Safe & Green Holdings spinoff completed
Safe & Green Holdings Corp. completed the spinoff of its real estate development subsidiary into a separate company on Sept. 28, and Safe and Green Development Corp. is now trading on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “SGD.”
Safe & Green Holdings continues to trade under the ticker “SGBX.”
The company’s main business is converting cargo shipping containers into buildings, and it announced its plan to spin off its real estate development company in December 2022.
The company was formerly known as SG Blocks and was headquartered in Jacksonville, but it moved its offices to Miami in early 2023.
If you’re putting your home on the market, you may be wondering how to style it. Home staging is a popular house-selling strategy that presents your home in its best light.
Staging a house is meant to show off your home’s features, create a move-in-ready look and help potential buyers see themselves living in the space. From tidying up your space to redecorating, home staging can give your home a clean and inviting ambiance that welcomes buyers — and may even entice them to pay more.
When preparing a home for sale, many sellers hire professional home stagers to create a warm, inviting place that buyers will want to call home. But, there are many changes you can make on your own.
Declutter Your Space
Declutter, declutter, declutter. Staged homes shouldn’t have piles of paper on the countertops. Take a moment to reassess your space and ask yourself, “Do I need this?” Determine which books, loose mail and magazines can be stored elsewhere to create a more spacious look.
Getting rid of clutter shows that your home is organized. Potential buyers may also infer that you take good care of your home and that it’s well-maintained.
Focus on a Neutral Color Palette
Home stagers always prefer neutral palettes to make a room look balanced and timeless. Colors such as beige, white or light gray are good choices. Then, add aesthetically pleasing decor, such as a black or green pillow for the couch. Try to create a fun look that’s not too matchy-matchy.
Find Long-Term Storage for Everything on the Counters
In the bathroom, find a long-term storage solution for items like cotton swabs and hair brushes so they’re not littering countertops. Add mirrors to walls to increase light in a small or dark bathroom. Even consider a new set of white, solid brown or light gray towels to give your bathroom a clean, seamless look.
Clear off your kitchen countertops by storing away small appliances, kitchen tools and knick-knacks. You want to accentuate the positives — cabinets for storage and plenty of countertop space for food prep. What can you keep on the table? A bowl of fresh fruit, like lemons or oranges, to add a pop of color and style.
Professionally Organize Your Closet
Show off your generous closet space by making each one neat and tidy. Remove everything from your closets and sort it into piles: keep, donate, sell and recycle.
If there are items you’d like to keep that you’re not currently using, store them away until you’re ready to move. You want potential homebuyers to see uncluttered closets with plenty of space. A bonus? Paring down your belongings means you’ll have less to pack.
Make Your Bedrooms Feel Hotel-Like and Inviting
Stick with one neutral color in the bedroom, perhaps all white, gray or beige, for example. To make your room hotel-like, tuck your comforter into the end of your mattress. Place two pillows on the bed, then add another three to five on top for a luxurious feel. For an attractive touch above the headboard, hang either one large piece of artwork or a set of three smaller ones.
Look to Odd Numbers
Group items in odd numbers, such as three or five. This classic design rule helps create visual interest and calming, naturally appealing displays. It’s a trick that makes a room look more luxurious versus symmetrical. On the dresser or bedside table, arrange a small vase of flowers with two books.
Use Glass for Small Dining Spaces
Make a tiny dining room’s layout appear larger with a glass-topped table. The more solid the furniture, the smaller a place looks.
Add a rug to “anchor” the room, even if you have an open-plan house. But keep in mind the room’s scale — in grander rooms, go big, and in smaller spaces, use a more petite rug that fits under the table. Place a generously sized centerpiece to draw the eye upward toward the room’s ceiling light.
Take Window Treatments to the Ceiling
To create height (even in small rooms), take window treatments as high to the ceiling as possible. Window treatments make the room look taller. And there’s no need to splurge on fancy panels; drapes are one way to use fun patterns in an otherwise neutral room.
Hang a Mirror in the Entryway
At the entryway, set up a sofa table or console with a lamp and accessories in sets of three. Above the console, hang a mirror or a larger piece of artwork to create a welcoming feel whether you’re coming or going.
Don’t Forget About the Curb Appeal
Curb appeal is all about making that beautiful first impression. Fortunately, it doesn’t take much to make a big impact. Fresh paint, a new mailbox, a healthy manicured lawn, a clean walkway and flower-filled containers are easy ways to improve your home’s exterior appearance. You may also want to consider investing in outdoor lighting to enhance both safety and aesthetic appeal and, potentially, even your appraisal.
Remove Bulky Furniture
When staging a home for sale, put oversized furniture in storage. Furniture that is too large for a space can make a room feel cramped. Rent or purchase some inexpensive pieces better scaled to the room to make the area appear more airy and comfortable.
Depersonalize Your Home
Your home may be filled with years of special memories, but you’ll want to remove personal photos, collectibles and keepsakes when selling. The goal is to eliminate distractions and help prospective buyers envision themselves living in the space. You want them to concentrate on your home’s unique features, not your personal memories.
Have a Pleasant Scent in the Home for Tours
A gentle, refreshing scent creates a cozy feel and can trigger pleasant emotions. When it’s time to show your home, think about spraying a dash of essential oils throughout your rooms or using a diffuser.
You’ll also want to make sure to remove any bad smells. Open the windows to let fresh air in and thoroughly clean your carpets, sinks, trash cans, bathrooms and pet areas.
With this advice, your home’s spacious, balanced and livable look will be ready to list and show off to potential buyers.

A place for everything, and everything in its place.
Have you ever visited a friend and opened their pantry doors to find an extremely organized space? If so, you can attest that it’s almost breathtaking. They’ve aligned bottles of oils, and beautiful jars contain nuts and dried fruit. Clear, labeled containers hold pasta and grains. They may have even gone so far as to color-coordinate each shelf.
Of course, we can’t all be Marie Kondo in the pantry. That is to say, don’t feel bad if your pantry has become the place to store, well, everything, from food to mail and kitchen appliances. You are definitely not alone.
So, how do you get started sorting it out and regaining control of this important organizational space? Let’s take it step-by-step with these 10 pantry organization ideas. You can create a pantry that captivates you and your family and friends.
Fair warning: Once you’ve organized your pantry with these organization ideas, the rest of your kitchen is sure to follow.
1. Clean out and declutter
Albert Einstein said, “Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” So, consider this an opportunity to bring harmony to your home with unique pantry organization ideas. As most humans, you’ve probably thought about organizing your pantry a hundred times. You may have even started with a shelf only to find yourself waylaid by one of life’s many other demands.
There’s one way to ensure you create the pantry you’ve seen in Better Homes & Gardens and on Pinterest. Start by cleaning it out entirely. Not only do you have a clean slate to work with, but you also get to clean the shelves. A win-win! Consider making your own lemony-fresh pantry cleaner by combining 1 ½ cups of water with ¼ cup white vinegar and about 20 drops of lemon essential oil.
Another fresh pantry organization idea: Have a trash bag handy as you remove items, and toss those opened food items that have been gathering dust in the corners.
2. Decide what to keep, share and discard
This is the time to check for expiration dates and be brutally honest. While it was very nice of your friend to give you wagon-wheel-shaped pasta made out of lentils when you were on a legume craze, will you really ever use it? For items like this that are still good and unopened, consider putting a box together for the local food bank or homeless shelter.
This is also the time to think about what doesn’t belong. Is there a better place for your kitchen appliances, like next to the stove? Would you use your herbs and spices more if they were in a beautiful spice rack on the side of a cabinet? Can you make an organized space in your cabinets for your Tupperware? Do you have room on your bookshelves for the cookbooks?
3. Gather like-minded products
Yes, opposites attract, but creating order from chaos is key in decluttering. One of our best pantry organization ideas is also the simplest: Place similar products in separate piles so you can see what you have to work with and how big your storage containers (the organizer’s guru) will need to be. Condiments and sauces in one pile, grains and starches in another and unrefrigerated produce in its own little group.
4. Get in the zone
This is when it starts getting fun if you’re Marie Kondo. For us mere mortals, it may get slightly interesting. Zones are the areas in your pantry dedicated to the specific items you’ve grouped together. But it gets better. You can also group items based on your lifestyle and the unique way you use them in your everyday affairs.
Do you love baking? Consider a basket or bin that holds all your baking items. Now, you have everything you need from your pantry when it’s time for morning cinnamon rolls or banana bread.
Do you regularly entertain? Consider creating a basket designed for last-minute get-togethers. A bin with a few bottles of wine, bagel bits, water crackers, olives and napkins will go well with the triple creme brie and Italian dry salami you keep in the fridge.
Are you an organized chef who prepares meal plans and shops once a week for food items? Good for you. Consider separate bins that contain the things you need for each meal. You can even label them according to the day of the week.
5. Keep it simple
Sometimes, as Leonardo da Vinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” To keep things simple, organize by general categories based on what you have without getting too specific. An example of common categories includes the following:
Bread (Note: If you live in a humid, hot environment, it’s best to store bread in a well-ventilated area, i.e., not your pantry.)
6. Select your pantry organizers
Some people use clear bins for their transparency, allowing them to see items quickly. Others favor baskets with handles for their country-esque aesthetics. Chips find a great home in a rectangular basket, making them easy to grab and put back.
The extreme organizer may select different colored bins for various categories. And, if you’re eclectic in nature, you can enjoy the benefit of all different types of containers as long as they’re purposefully designed and implemented.
An important tip: If you’re low on space and high on dry goods, make sure the containers are stackable. You can also incorporate riser or stacking shelves that create extra space.
Turntables are a nice edition for regularly used items like sauces, oils and condiments. Placing them in the corners utilizes every inch of space. Glass mason jars add a country feel and are ideal for grains, pasta, nuts and beans. Larger jars can hold flour, sugar and pancake mix. Airtight, BPA-free plastic food canisters come in many sizes.
Before you make your selections, measure your shelves to ensure they’ll fit perfectly.
7. Labels are your new best friend
Labeling everything is critical to your pantry organizing success. Today, you can choose from Bluetooth options with corresponding apps or label makers with large keyboards and every font.
Of course, if you’re a scribe at heart, you can add a personal, handmade touch. Write directly on glass and plastic containers with wet-erase markers, or add some color by writing on decorative washi tape. You’ll also find reusable stickers and self-adhesive labels designed for pantry storage. You can label your baskets with reusable, dry-erase clip-on labels.
These labels identify major categories as well as individual items. Make sure to include the expiration date for items you’ve decanted, whether pasta, cereal or rice. Labels go a long way in ensuring your family can find the items they’re looking for and put them back in their correct location when they’re done.
8. Finding the right spot
Keep items you regularly use in easy reach and store occasionally used items on a higher shelf. Any things you’d like to keep away from the kids also go on the top shelf. Remember, nothing is set in stone. As you use your new-and-improved pantry, you’ll discover the perfect locations for your categories.
One of the most important considerations is making sure you buy for the space you have. In other words, a small pantry may limit your trips to Costco but will make you much happier whenever you open the doors.
9. Consider the little ones
If you have young children, take a look at your pantry from their vantage point. Then, set up a little basket just for them, maybe with their favorite cereals and snacks. Consider including a few spoons and plastic bowls. Little ones love the feeling of self-mastery that having some independence brings.
10. Quick touch-ups
Once you experience an organized pantry, there’s no going back. So it makes sense that one of the best pantry organization ideas is upkeep. A quick touch-up now and then ensures your hard work does not go wasted. A good time for a five-minute run-through is when you’re putting away your weekly groceries.
Create a pantry that makes you smile
Life gets busy. Creating an organized pantry with these pantry organization ideas makes finding what you’re looking for quick and easy. It also helps you remain mindful of what you have in stock and what to add to the grocery list. Not only do you save time, but you also save money.

Maintaining a spotless home is essential for your well-being and comfort, and to achieve this, you need the right cleaning gear. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the top cleaning supplies and tips every young renter should have and why they are essential for maintaining a clean and healthy living environment. We broke our cleaning supplies list down by room to save you time, so scroll to a specific room if needed.
Why keeping a clean home is important
Keeping your house clean offers a multitude of physical and mental health benefits. On the physical front, a clean home reduces exposure to allergens, dust and harmful bacteria, which can help prevent respiratory issues and allergies — and not to mention, needless illness.
Regular cleaning also promotes physical activity, as tasks like vacuuming, mopping and decluttering engage your muscles and contribute to a more active lifestyle. Moreover, a tidy and organized living space minimizes the risk of accidents and injuries, such as slips and falls.
Mentally, a clean home can significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels. A clutter-free environment promotes mental clarity, allowing you to focus better and feel more in control of your surroundings. The act of cleaning itself can be therapeutic, providing a sense of accomplishment and order in your life. Additionally, living in a clean and organized space can boost your self-esteem and overall well-being, as it fosters a sense of pride and comfort in your home.
Essential cleaning supplies list for every room
Before we dive into room-specific cleaning essentials, let’s start with the basics that are indispensable for maintaining a clean home regardless of the room.
Cleaning gloves: A pair of durable cleaning gloves is your first line of defense against dirt and germs. They protect your hands from harsh chemicals and ensure you can tackle even the messiest cleaning tasks with confidence.
Cleaning caddy: Invest in a portable cleaning caddy or bucket to keep your cleaning supplies organized and easily accessible as you move from room to room.
Trash bags: Keep a stash of high-quality trash bags on hand. Regularly emptying the trash (think once per day) is key to maintaining a clean space.
Multi-purpose cleaner: Opt for a versatile, all-purpose cleaner that can be used on various surfaces. This will save you money and space compared to having specialized cleaners for every surface. If you want to go the natural route, we’ve provided some low-cost, DIY cleaning solution ideas below.
Kitchen cleaning essentials
The kitchen is often the heart of the home, so keeping it clean is essential for both hygiene and aesthetics.
Dish soap and sponges: You’ll need these to hand wash dishes and clean countertops, sinks, and appliances.
Oven cleaner: To tackle baked-on grease and grime in your oven, a specialized oven cleaner is a must.
Refrigerator cleaner: Keep your fridge smelling fresh and bacteria-free with a dedicated refrigerator cleaner.
Dishwasher detergent: If your apartment comes with a dishwasher, make sure you have a good quality detergent to keep your dishes sparkling clean.
Bathroom cleaning supplies
The bathroom is another area that requires regular cleaning and sanitizing to prevent the buildup of mold, mildew and bacteria.
Toilet bowl cleaner and brush: A dedicated toilet bowl cleaner and brush are essential for maintaining a clean and hygienic toilet.
Tile and grout cleaner: To keep your bathroom tiles looking pristine, invest in a tile and grout cleaner.
Shower and tub cleaner: Prevent soap scum and grime buildup in the shower and bathtub with a specialized cleaner. Some of them have mold and mildew cleaning agents that keep buildup in check.
Glass cleaner: For mirrors and glass surfaces in the bathroom, a good glass cleaner is a must-have for streak-free surfaces.
Living room cleaning essentials
The living room is where you unwind and entertain guests, so make sure to keep it clean and inviting.
Furniture polish: Keep your furniture looking its best with a quality furniture polish.
Carpet cleaner: If your living room has carpeting, a carpet cleaner or stain remover is essential for tackling spills and stains.
Electronics cleaner: Safely clean your TV, computer screen and other electronics with an electronics-specific cleaning solution.
Bedroom cleaning necessities
Your bedroom is your sanctuary, so it’s important to keep it clean and comfortable.
Bed linens spray: A bed linen spray can freshen up your bedding between washes, creating a cozy sleeping environment.
Mattress protector: Protect your mattress from spills and stains with a waterproof mattress protector.
Dust cloths: Dusting regularly is essential for maintaining a clean bedroom. Microfiber dust cloths are effective at trapping dust and allergens.
Eco-friendly cleaning options
If you’re environmentally conscious, consider incorporating eco-friendly cleaning supplies into your arsenal.
Biodegradable cleaning products: Look for cleaning products that are biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
Reusable cleaning cloths: Reduce waste by using washable and reusable cleaning cloths and sponges instead of disposable ones.
DIY cleaning solutions
For those on a budget, DIY cleaning solutions can be just as effective as store-bought products.
Distilled white vinegar and baking soda: These two household staples can clean and disinfect various surfaces.
Lemon juice: Lemon juice is a natural degreaser and can add a pleasant, energizing scent to your cleaning solutions.
These cleaning products keep your house clean and green
If you prefer store-bought green cleaning products, there are many options available.
Plant-based cleaners: Look for cleaning products that are made from plant-based ingredients and are free from harsh chemicals.
Certified Green products: Some cleaning products carry certifications like the Green Seal or EPA Safer Choice, indicating they meet specific environmental and safety standards.
Cleaning tools and accessories
To efficiently tackle cleaning tasks, you’ll need the right tools.
Mops and brooms: A good quality mop and broom are essential for keeping your floors clean. If you want an AI-powered version of either or both, there are now robot brooms and mops available for sparkling floors, but they’re pricey.
Microfiber cloths and sponges: Microfiber cloths are excellent at trapping dust and dirt, making them versatile cleaning tools.
Vacuum cleaners: If your apartment has carpets, invest in a vacuum cleaner that suits your space and needs. If you have more than one pet or a heavy shedder, consider a vacuum specifically geared toward eliminating pet hair concerns.
Organizing your cleaning supplies
Now that you have your cleaning supplies, it’s crucial to keep them organized for easy access.
Storage solutions
Shelving or cabinets: Consider adding shelving or a cabinet in a convenient location to store your cleaning supplies neatly.
Labels: Use labels on containers and shelves to ensure you can quickly locate the right cleaning product.
Time-saving techniques
No one has endless hours to devote to cleaning tasks. Here’s what you can do to stay on track and clean more efficiently so you can get back to what you actually enjoy at home.
But first, declutter
Before cleaning, declutter the space to make cleaning more manageable. Decluttering nearly automatically decreases mess because it’s one less item you have to clean — or an obstacle to clean around. Plus, a decluttered space is one that collects less dust.
Try a room-by-room approach
Clean one room at a time to stay focused and maximize efficiency. Some people have even suggested closing the door to the room until it’s clean to keep you from noticing things you might need to clean or tidy in surrounding areas.
Deep cleaning vs. routine cleaning
All of the products and techniques we outlined above apply to both deep cleaning and routine cleaning, but it’s important to know the difference between the two.
Routine cleaning for a healthy home
Regularly scheduled cleaning tasks are considered preventative because they help prevent the buildup of dirt and grime. Setting aside just 10-15 minutes per day to take care of routine cleaning tasks, like washing dishes, vacuuming, tidying or cleaning kitchen counters eliminates the need for a deep clean later. If it helps keep you on track, stick to one area at a time: Committing to clearing one counter will save minutes and hours later.
Deep cleaning for a spotless home
Not everything can be taken care of by the spot cleaning we mentioned above. Whether you’ve let cleaning tasks pile up for a while or you just want a total cleaning reset on your home, deep cleaning might be your best bet. Set aside time for deep cleaning sessions to tackle more thorough tasks like cleaning the oven or scrubbing tile grout.

Homemade scented candles: where creativity meets illumination.
It’s almost fall, which means it’s generally the best time for candles and coffee. When the first cooler breeze hits, our minds turn to all things vanilla, spice and woodsy scents. And then shortly after, we get to the holidays, when we want to smell fir, cloves and spiced berry fragrances. Unfortunately, a candle craving can get expensive, with many larger candles coming in at almost $50 each.
Rather than trade your life’s savings for a nice-smelling apartment, you can do some scented candle making on your own. Here’s how to make scented candles and fill your home with the scents of the season so you can save some money and customize each candle to your liking.
Materials you’ll need for homemade scented candles
Here are the supplies to buy for your scented candle making, some of which you may already have on hand:
Candle wax of your choice:
Soy wax flakes
Paraffin wax
A blend of the two
Containers for each candle (mason jars, tins, etc.)
Candle wicks (available at most craft stores or online)
Wick trimmer or scissors
Stirring utensil (wooden spoon or stir stick)
Hot glue gun, superglue or glue dots
Fragrance oils or essential oils
Dye (optional for colored candles)
Candy thermometer
Pot or saucepan
Glass bowl or pitcher
Labels or decorations
Making your own DIY scented candles at home
Once you’ve gathered your supplies, it’s time to start candle-making! The process is pretty easy, but it can get messy — especially if it’s your first time making candles. Wear an apron or clothing you don’t mind ruining and avoid using the melted wax on carpet or other surfaces that could be harmed by the wax.
1. Attach and center your wick
Start out by selecting your candle containers of choice, whether that be empty candle jars, mason jars or multipurpose jars. Make sure the container has been thoroughly washed and is completely dry. Place a dab of your glue of choice in the bottom center of the container and press the bottom of a wick into the glue. If you’re using a wider container, you have the option to do multiple wicks so that your candle will burn evenly instead of tunneling.
Cut a piece of masking tape that is long enough to fit across the top of your candle container. Using scissors, cut a hole in the middle of the tape, then pull the top of the wick through the hole. Secure the tape across the top of the candle container. You can also use a pencil to wrap the wick around and hold it up. This should keep the wick standing straight so it doesn’t fall into the wax at an odd angle and ruin the candle’s burn pattern.
2. Melt the wax
Now it’s time to melt your wax for your homemade candles. Start by filling your pot or saucepan about halfway with water, then bring it to a boil by putting it over high heat on the stove. Put your wax into the glass bowl or pitcher, then put it over the boiling water. This will form a double boiler and ensure that your wax doesn’t get too hot or burn away.
The amount of wax you’ll use will really depend on how many candles you’re making — it’s easy to simply eyeball the amount you use and maybe add a little extra to ensure you have enough. The good news is that if you end up melting too much, the wax will harden and be reusable to melt again.
To ensure your candle wax is melted enough, put the candy thermometer in the wax as it heats and bring it to about 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Once it reaches that temperature, remove the wax from the heat.
3. Add fragrance
Let the wax cool down to about 140 degrees Fahrenheit. This can vary on timing, so you can leave it alone and check back every few minutes. Once it’s reached 140 degrees Fahrenheit, you can add your fragrance of choice.
The general rule is to add one ounce of fragrance oil for every pound of wax you melt. However, you’re welcome to add less than that if you like weaker scents or more than that if you want a stronger-scented candle.
If using essential oils, you may need to add even more than that since they are typically a little weaker. Feel free to get creative and mix different essential oils to develop your own unique scent. Crafting your favorite scents is easy with these combinations.
4. Pour the wax and add decorations
You’re one step closer to your finished candle! Now, once you’ve added your fragrance, you’ll simply pour the wax into the containers you prepared beforehand. Pour it out slowly, or else it can create air bubbles in the new containers and make the top of the candle look bumpy.
For those who want to make their candle personalized, add a name for your candle with a label, or sprinkle in some dried flowers, glitter or even sprinkles for a fun decorative touch. Do this before the candle dries so it stays intact and doesn’t fall out.
5. Let it cool, trim your wick and enjoy!
Once you pour your scented candle, make sure to let it cool before you light it! Leave it for at least 24 hours to ensure it cools and sets completely. Then, trim your wick, light your candle and enjoy the soft scent as it fills your apartment.
Is making scented candles profitable?
Consider crafting more than one candle either for your own apartment or as gifts or you can also sell them! Because the wax and fragrance oils are relatively affordable, as long as you sell your candles for more than the cost of materials and factor in how much time you spend making the candles, you can sell your scented candles for a nice profit.
Must-read candle safety tips
Ensure you trim the wick each time before lighting your homemade candle — you’ll want it about one-fourth of an inch above the wax. If the wick is too long, it can create a large flame and the wick will get too hot and start to spark and pop.
Never leave your lit homemade candle unattended. It’s best if you can see the candle while it burns just in case the flame gets too big, it tips over or it catches on something nearby, like curtains.
When burning your homemade candles, be as safe as possible to avoid catching anything on fire or burning yourself.
Homemade scented candles made easy
Making scented candles is an easy and fun way to make your own personalized scents. While it may seem easier to buy a premade candle, seeing the fruits of your labor makes crafting a homemade scented candle a worthwhile endeavor. Start making your own candles for your apartment and invent your own delightful scents!

Between unwanted stains and routine cleanings, we spend quite a bit of time in laundry rooms. The average person spends 260 minutes on laundry a week and while this may be shocking, it goes to show the integral part this room plays in daily routines.
Due to the concealed nature of the laundry room, this space is easily neglected making tidiness the first to go. Through multiple loads of laundry, clunky equipment, cleaning supplies and various piles of clothes, it’s easy to feel buried and unsure of how to start fresh (literally). We’ve rounded up our list of fool-proof laundry room organization tips that are sure to return your laundry room to a place of peace and functionality.
Decluttering chaos
The first step in any organizing journey is decluttering, and this is especially true when it comes to laundry room organization. Marie Kondo said it best when she stated, “Keep only things that speak to your heart. Then take the plunge and discard all the rest.”
This is applicable to even purely functional rooms, like the laundry room. Detergent, dryer sheets, fabric softener and even loose socks collect over time. Going through pre-existing items in your laundry room helps you eliminate unwanted items anyway, so why not start your decluttering here?
Own your organization
Now that you’ve decluttered, you can successfully organize and optimize your laundry room. When organizing small spaces like these, it’s helpful to remove everything from the room to then place it back in every new way you choose.
Use vertical space
Some laundry rooms come with pre-installed shelves that can be utilized for storing laundry-related items. If you don’t have pre-installed shelves, consider damage-free shelf solutions to really make the most of your vertical space.
Invest in sorting bins
Sorting bins are key to keeping things in place. Investing in sorting bins gives you the opportunity to create a home for all your various laundry items, even the miscellaneous ones. For example, random ingredients to DIY stain remover may not have a set home, leading to a disorganized feel. The best categories to start with are detergent, softener, stain remover, bleach — and one miscellaneous laundry item group. It’s recommended to label these containers and bins for even more assistance in keeping things organized.
Take it one step further and invest in clean and dirty bins, if space allows. Two-tiered hampers are small-space-friendly and are great for keeping laundry off the floors and from sitting in the dryer until it’s ready to fold.
Add trays or carts for sorting
For those who may not have a ton of vertical wall space to use, trays and carts are useful options. Utility carts, while small in size, are just large enough to hold all your laundry-related items in an organized fashion. If you’re feeling creative and want to enhance your decor, choose a cart in a fun color or paint over one to match your desired clean aesthetic.
Get creative with over-the-door storage
Door organizers that go over the door can be a lifesaver for those with small spaces and a lot of products. This essentially creates shelf spaces that are off the ground and out of the way of your laundry routine.
Find a foldable drying rack
We’ve all had to deal with the debate over where to place clothing items that aren’t being placed in the dryer. This can eventually create a build-up of clean clothes hanging over random doors and corners in the laundry room and around the apartment. Foldable drying racks create a home for these gentle pieces that would otherwise float around during their air-drying time.
Hold yourself accountable and make sure once the clothing items on the rack are dry, that they’re put away so the drying rack is ready to be used for the next batch. Otherwise, the rack could end up being a piled-up mess, which is exactly what we’re trying to avoid in the first place.
If your apartment allows moderate changes to the rental space, think about mounting drying racks to the wall to further add to the functionality and promote better laundry room organization.
Your organizational dreams are just a load away
Conquering the chaos in your laundry room is not only about creating an organized space but also about regaining a sense of control and peace in your daily life. By following the laundry room organization tips we’ve shortlisted here, you can transform your laundry room from a cluttered nightmare into an efficient haven.

The stigma attached to cockroaches makes them the nemesis of all apartment dwellers. Seeing roaches inside an apartment causes all kinds of issues, which is why nobody wants them around. Fortunately, there are concrete steps for how to get rid of roaches in your apartment.
Are roaches common in apartments?
The awful truth is that roaches are common everywhere. According to Pegasus Pest Control, cleanliness does play a role in what attracts roaches to a particular residence though. “There are living conditions that will suit cockroaches more. Like us, they need food and water to survive.”
Having a home where food gets left out or a kitchen with crumb-covered counters is a definite welcome sign for roaches. Things like dirty dishes left in the skink too long and even pet food sitting out in your dog’s bowl can both contribute to a roach problem. Especially in an apartment building where another tenant is on the messy side, if you’re not keeping things clean, the roaches already in the building may pay you a visit.
It’s best to assume all apartment buildings have roaches, maybe even a few different kinds. Whether it’s only a few or a larger population, behave proactively in your own space to keep them at bay.
What’s causing the roach issue?
You may lump all roaches into one category of creepy crawlies, but there are actually different types that can cause a cockroach infestation.
The most visible type are German cockroaches. These are small and light brown and don’t get longer than about 3/4 of an inch. You can identify German roaches by the two stripes visible on the plate behind their head. A German cockroach will live anywhere but prefers inner-city environments. These guys are pretty resilient to insecticides, so you may have to think outside the box when it comes to pest control tips. Making your own traps is your best bet.
Other roaches you may see in your apartment include the:
Brown-banded cockroach
American cockroach
Smoky brown cockroach
Oriental cockroach
Of course, the only kind of cockroaches you want to see are dead ones, but it’s never a bad thing to know more about what you’re dealing with.
Why do you have a roach infestation in your clean apartment?
Even if you’ve put all your food away and meticulously cleaned your kitchen, you can still end up seeing a roach or two. A clean apartment is a great way to deter roaches, but there’s something else they’re looking for that your apartment has no matter what — water. “Roaches need moisture to survive and this search for water will bring them into even the cleanest of homes,” according to Northwest Exterminating.
Leaky pipes or a drippy faucet, things you don’t associate with dirt at all, call out to roaches. It’s why you often see them in bathrooms in addition to the kitchen. Roaches eat a lot, but they also get thirsty. They can hide under refrigerators or air conditioning units to drink the condensation or even try to sneak a sip from a pet’s water bowl. Roaches may like dirt, but their needs are much bigger than grabbing a quick snack off your dirty dishes.
How to get rid of roaches in your apartment
Cockroaches are quick, sneaky and adaptable pests that are very hard to eliminate. They are also harmful to have around, as carriers of bacteria and other infectious agents, with the potential to contaminate food. Because of this, it’s important to address the issue immediately after you spot one of these unwelcome house guests. And yes, we’re talking about how to kill cockroaches.
While these are some of the most common methods to get rid of cockroaches in an apartment, you’ll most likely end up needing a combination of them in order to get a roach-free home.
1. Attract roaches using bait
Often the safest and most effective, baits work over an extended period of time to kill roaches. They’ll either kill on contact or use an unlucky few to carry the poison back to their buddies. Gels, bait stations and bait traps are available at most hardware stores, drug stores or supermarkets. Since roaches love nearby food sources, giving them bait to snack on instead of your own food can help prevent future infestations.
After you identify where the roaches are hiding, based on where you usually see them, place the bait, in containers, as close as possible. If you want the roaches to carry the bait back, make the container easy to escape. If you want them to stay put, consider jar traps. You can also target areas where food and moisture are most readily available. For any cracks or small areas, use gel bait. Change out the bait every three to six months.
2. Do a little dusting
Roach traps that use dust come in three different types — silica, diatomaceous earth and boric acid. The first two damage and desiccate a roach’s exoskeleton while the boric acid is toxic when ingested. This strategy is useful since they can get rid of roaches that simply walk through the dust.
The safest option is diatomaceous earth, which is a completely organic insecticide that actually kills roaches, fleas, ticks and bed bugs. It’s a great preventive option, as well, if you want to avoid a cockroach infestation.
To use, sprinkle a light dusting where roaches like to hide — inside cabinets, behind appliances and around cracks in kitchens and bathrooms. Reapply every three to four months.
Boric acid, while one way to get rid of roaches, shouldn’t necessarily be your go-to choice. Since it’s toxic, you don’t want to use boric acid in an apartment with pets or young children. Cockroaches must eat boric acid for it to do any damage, as well, so it might take longer to kick in.
3. Set a trap
Traps are for the brave souls who don’t mind dealing with the disposal of live roaches. You can buy them or make them at home. Sticky traps will stop a roach in its tracks and you can usually find them at your local hardware or drug store.
One homemade option requires a jar and some tempting food. Put a moist piece of bread and some slices of raw potato in an open jar. Then, line the inside walls of the jar with petroleum jelly and set in an area you’ve seen at least one roach. You’ll attract cockroaches with the food but they can’t climb back out. To dispose of the roaches you catch, fill the jar with soapy water and screw on a lid.
4. Use what’s in your pantry
It may surprise you how many ingredients you already have at home that will deal with cockroaches. Incorporating staple items from your pantry can make dealing with these pests quicker, cheaper and faster.
To really attract roaches to your bait stations, mix brown sugar and baking soda. The sugar will tempt the cockroaches to visit the bait and the baking soda will kill them when it’s ingested.
Although you’ll still need a shopping trip for this one, you can make your own dry bait stations around your apartment by mixing equal parts powdered sugar, yellow cornmeal and borax. Cockroaches will walk through the bait and then clean themselves, ingesting the poison. This bait is also toxic to humans and pets, so use it with care.
If you’re looking to repel these pests, think citrus. Roaches hate the smell. If you don’t have citrus-scented cleaners on hand to spray, strategically place citrus peel or even citrus pulp around your home. You’ll not only repel roaches but make your home smell sweet.
Using your own pantry ingredients to create effective bait stations for roaches is as simple as pulling out those staple items just about everyone keeps on hand.
5. Hire a professional exterminator to treat an infestation
This is an extreme solution ideally meant for an actual roach infestation. You should contact your property manager before going this route since your lease may include this type of maintenance. To be effective, an exterminator should spray the entire building, which is why you should loop in your property manager to handle the bigger picture.
If you’re wondering what your exterminator is spraying around your home, chances are it’s a combination of insecticide and insect growth regulators. This second ingredient works by disrupting how roaches grow and produce. It may not kill the adults, but it will stop new roaches from joining their parents. The insecticide will take care of the older guys.
What can I do to get rid of roaches forever?
While there’s no guarantee you won’t see a roach again, once you’ve gotten rid of them, there are a few tips to make sure you’ve gotten rid of roaches for good.
Alert your property manager that you’ve taken steps to deal with roaches in your own apartment. Since it’s most likely a building-wide problem, your property manager should take steps to have the whole building treated. If they don’t already have an exterminator coming in to get rid of roaches, it might be time.
Keep things dry, avoid clutter of any kind, even if it’s temporary and store food in plastic containers with tight seals. Sweep up crumbs, wipe down countertops and clean spills quickly. Don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight and avoid having too many cardboard boxes laying around, as well. These all tempt new roaches to come exploring.
Make sure garbage is in tightly-sealed containers which you empty regularly.
Give your apartment a once-over for small cracks in doors, windows or walls. If you find any, ask your property manager to seal them or do it yourself if you’re able.
Get rid of soap bars and house plants. Cockroaches like these items, too. You can replace bar soap with liquid soap where possible, like at the kitchen sink and in bathrooms. If you want to keep your house plants around, smear a little petroleum jelly on the outside of the pots so it is too slippery for the roaches to climb.
Work in some light cleaning on a regular basis. You especially want to get out that vacuum cleaner at least once a week to remove potential food sources for cockroaches and keep your apartment clean.
Roaches are pests. They carry diseases and nobody likes them. But, you don’t need to battle to go from live bugs to dead roaches. These steps make it easier to prevent cockroaches from thinking your apartment looks like a sweet new place to call home.
Learn how to get rid of roaches in your apartment
The sad truth is, it’s not if you’ll see a roach in your apartment, but when. They’re most likely already living in the walls because they’re already everywhere. All you can do is expect a roach problem at some point and focus on keeping your home as uninviting for them as possible. And, if they do appear, be quick to get rid of anything that roaches consume or that may attract them to your apartment.
Since cockroaches aren’t the only pests that can invade your space as an apartment-dweller, practicing good habits to keep your home pest-free, in general, is always a good rule of thumb.
