Looking for the best jobs where you work alone? If you’re an introvert or simply want minimal human interaction, here are 40 ideas.
With there being so many different types of jobs out there nowadays, more and more people are looking for jobs where they can be by themselves, away from the busy office or customers. They find comfort in jobs where they can do tasks on their own, letting them really concentrate and do well in what they do best.
For me, I have worked mostly alone for over a decade now, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I enjoy the flexibility of working on my own and having less stress.
Jobs that let you work this way are usually appealing to introverted individuals, those who like a calmer setting, or people who just work better with more independence.
Knowing which jobs let you work alone is really important for those who want to find the right mix of being on their own and getting things done well.

Benefits of Jobs Where You Work Alone
More and more people are looking for jobs where they can work alone, and I get it! I have been working mostly alone for over a decade and I really love it.
After all, a person spends so much of their time working, so you might as well like what you’re doing. If you’re an introvert, or if you like working by yourself, there are jobs where you can do just that.
Some of the positives of working alone include:
Less stress if you’re an introvert – If you’re an introvert, then you may feel stress when working with other people, such as coworkers and customers.
Getting more stuff done in less time – Working alone may mean that you can complete your tasks faster because there are fewer distractions.
Having a more flexible schedule – Some jobs where you work on your own sometimes let you choose when you want to work, as long as you get the work done.
If you’re looking for jobs where you work alone, think about what you’re good at and what you enjoy (and also think about what you don’t like!).

Think Geek Squad meets The Property Brothers. At a National Association of Realtors summit last month in Miami, innovators, investors and real estate professionals got together to chat like chatbots about PropTech. That’s the hip insider term for “property technology.”
Just as technology has changed the way we shop, get to places and communicate, it is also upending how we buy and sell houses. NAR’s director of emerging technology, Dan Weisman, agreed to tell me about the meeting’s biggest takeaways minus the geek speak:
Q: Will technology make the process of buying or selling a house less painful?
A: The role of technology in real estate is to streamline the process and reduce stress points. Most of us are familiar with DocuSign or similar technologies that offer the ability to e-sign legal documents. That has simplified what used to be a cumbersome process. Remember when submitting an offer or signing loans docs required wet-signing paper forms and sending them overnight? Now we can sign away hundreds of thousands of dollars by auto-filling our initials on our phones with our fingernail.
We’re trying to do that for other steps in the process, like the negotiations. Submitting an offer, waiting for a counter, working through two real estate agents, that is an area that needs work. Some companies have tried to create offer platforms, but none has worked out yet. That’s because we still need brokers to provide a level of control to make sure information gets passed along correctly. That said, technology is evolving that could eliminate financing delays. The fact that it often takes 45 to 60 days to close on a mortgage is an area that needs improvement.
Q: What are the downsides of the new PropTech?
A: Fraud risk. As much as we want to capitalize on technology, we have to watch for scammers. The more access they have to data, the greater the potential for fraud. These scammers can fake you into thinking they’re somebody they’re not. Deepfakes can essentially re-create a person and their voice. If you’re being asked to wire money or provide account information over the internet, pick up the phone and call the person you are dealing with and ask, “Was this you?” We’ve heard too many stories where money disappears.
Q: So how does all this AI horsepower change the way we choose a real estate agent?
A: We are still a people business. Most sellers and buyers need a real estate agent to help them navigate the process. However, today you also want an agent whose company has good IT behind it. The threshold question to ask when selecting an agent is: How are you using technology to make the process of buying or selling smoother?
Q: What was the biggest game-changer you saw at the summit?
A: Perhaps the most revolutionary change we’re seeing is AI technology that can help homebuyers see what a home could look like if they renovated. The online tool REimagine Home lets you upload a picture of a room and reimagine it. For instance, I took a picture of a bedroom and turned it into an office. You can change the furniture, flooring, wall color, light fixtures, and get a glimpse of what could be. For exterior improvements, a company called Hover allows prospective buyers to do the same.
As a film fanatic, I love an ending with a surprise twist that I didn’t see coming. When this filmmaking device is executed well, it can make a movie memorable for all the right reasons. Conversely, when a film can’t quite pull off a surprise ending, it can appear creepy, disturbing, and unsettling. Spoiler alert: According to a recent online thread, these ten movies had endings that were so bad they defied logic.
1. Solaris (2002)
George Clooney’s character, Dr. Chris Kelvin, is haunted in outer space by the memory of his deceased wife, who soon materializes as an alien life form that is not only a replica of her but is seemingly indestructible as she keeps coming back. However, for multiple users, finding out that Kelvin chose to remain in space while his alien doppelganger returned to earth in his place was too much to believe.
2. Midsommar (2019)
The idea that Dani, the film’s female protagonist, would select her boyfriend to die by ritual sacrifice stretches the bounds of credulity for several people. Even if he wanted to break up with her, his death was horrific by any standard.
3. Get Out (2017)
While this film did well at the box office, some viewers found the ending dissatisfying. The primary antagonist was left alive but wounded, leaving the possibility that she could survive to send more unsuspecting men to the Sunken Place.
4. Shutter Island (2010)
Finding out that Leonardo DiCaprio’s character was not a police detective and war veteran, but was the wife-murdering man his detective persona was hunting, turned off some viewers as being too implausible an ending.
5. Dark Water (2005)
When the back story of the ghostly child Natasha is revealed – she has been abandoned in the apartment complex by her neglectful, abusive parents.
The only individuals bearing the consequences of her abandonment and death are the building superintendent, who concealed his knowledge of her body, and Dahlia, who, in her ultimate act of sacrifice, becomes Natasha’s surrogate mother in death after giving up her own life to protect her daughter. So why weren’t the parents found and punished? Unsatisfying, indeed.
6. The Vanishing (1988)
If you seek a film where the villain faces consequences for their actions, this isn’t the one. Witnessing a criminal escape justice for kidnapping and murder not just once but twice, with the movie ending in such a manner, feels like a gut-wrenching disappointment.
7. The Mist (2007)
Posters to the online forum are dissatisfied with the ending of this movie. Following a harrowing ordeal, during which they faced off against colossal insects and other monstrous creatures throughout most of the movie, a cluster of survivors opted to end their lives in anticipation of what they perceived as an inescapable death. Regrettably, the sole remaining survivor among them, driven by compa-ion, kills the others, only to realize moments later that they are on the brink of rescue by the military.
8. Kids (1995)
Talk about a film with a creepy, disturbing ending. Seventeen-year-old Telly is HIV positive but seemingly doesn’t know it. Jennie, a girl that he infected with the virus, spends the day looking for him as he preys on other unsuspecting young girls. Viewers never know if Jennie tells him of her diagnosis.
9. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Matthew, the lead character played by Donald Sutherland in this remake of the 1956 film, spends the better part of two hours running from the alien pod people, only to reveal himself to be one of them at the end of the movie. This ending is a bitter pill to swallow for a lot of fans.
10. Saw (2004)
Easily one of the creepiest, most disturbing movie endings ever, according to multiple users. Finding out the corpse lying on the floor for the entirety of the film was the Jigsaw Killer, who then permanently imprisoned his victim, was shocking and unsettling.

Several big movies with significant nightmare productions have some seriously delicious tea. After a recent poll on the internet, here are twenty-five films with disasters that made filming difficult.
25 Blockbuster Films With Behind-The-Scenes Turmoil Unknown to the Public
Through legitimate or illegitimate means, the main character doesn’t always end the film as a good person. Whether through deception or a mistake, it does not change the result. Several of the most thrilling and astonishing events reveal that the protagonist is mistaken or definitely a villain. Here are some of the best films that demonstrate that.
1. Falling Down (1993)
Numerous cinema enthusiasts cite “Falling Down” as a prime example of an individual thinking they’re virtuous, only to realize that they are not. In the lead role, Michael Douglas portrays William, a man who experiences a sudden and intense breakdown, leading him to embark on a violent rampage. While his job loss and marital separation fuel his growing bitterness and resentment, both he and the audience come to the realization that he is far from the virtuous person he perceives himself to be.
2. Shutter Island (2010)
Shutter Island ends with a wild twist by the end. U.S. Marshal Teddy, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, and his recently teamed partner, Chuck, played by Mark Ruffalo, disembark from a ferry at a mental institution. Their objective is to locate a fugitive murderer who has managed to escape. As reality blurs and Teddy’s psyche unravels, the end reveals how far Teddy’s delusion stretched rather than face the truth of his past.
3. Primal Fear (1996)
Several people included this 90s flick on their lists. Primal Fear’s plot revolves around Martin (Richard Gere), a defense lawyer who represents Aaron (Edward Norton), an altar boy accused of killing his archbishop. Through windy twists, Martin believes he’s the story’s hero but soon learns he’s otherwise. This was shocking the first time I saw it.
4. Fight Club (1999)
Even if you’ve never seen this movie, you know the phrase “first rule of fight club.” While the first film had a young Edward Norton, Fight Club stars adult Norton narrating a story about him and his off-kilter friend Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). After forming an underground fight club, more people join their ranks, and chaos ensues as their club becomes much more. If you haven’t seen the film, check it out for the surprise twist.
5. Memento (2000)
Memento is a film where people debate whether the lead is good or bad. It all depends on how you cla-ify good. If it’s by a person’s actions, even if accidental, can they be called “good?” Also, because of the order, the end is the beginning, as Leonard (Guy Pearce) has short-term memory loss. His goal is to discover who killed his wife; however, he forgets info which lays the groundwork for monumental mistakes.
6. The Others (2001)
It’s no surprise The Others is on most folks’ lists. The twist was so shocking that I was angry because I did not expect that ending. Grace has it rough living in shadows in her dark home because her two children have severe skin reactions to sunlight. Soon she suspects ghosts haunt her home and fights to protect her children while not unraveling herself. This film reminds me of how upset I felt playing Silent Hill 2.
7. Pumpkinhead (1988)
Justice for a loss is understandable. But there is a fine line between justice and vengeance which Pumpkinhead crosses. Following the tragic loss of his young son in a motorcycle crash, Ed (Lance Henriksen) searches for an eerie elderly woman to invoke Pumpkinhead. Naturally, fewer individuals would pursue revenge if they were required to endure the same terror and agony that their victims went through. The final twist is the icing on the cake.
8. Identity (2003)
Identity delivers a lot of surprises, but it’s only near the very end that you realize what’s happening. Ian (John Cusack) and nine other strangers wind up stranded at a motel during a storm when people die one by one. A poem’s opening, “as I was going up the stair, I met a man who wasn’t there,” never sounded more chilling.
9. Us (2019)
Jordan Peele’s Us is another one where the “good person” turns out to be anything but. When Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) returns to the home she grew up in as a child with her husband and two kids, masked strangers arrive who resemble them. Whether you agree with the twist, “good” does not factor in. You can understand, but that’s it.
10. Frailty (2001)
Frailty, which a few people name, is about people thinking they’re good when they’re not. An unknown man (Matthew McConaughey) visits an FBI agent, Wesley (Powers Boothe), and recounts his childhood when his father believed he got a vision from God to kill people who were demons. This is still one of my favorite films because of the reveal at the end. I won’t spoil it here, but give this a view!

We’ve all heard the famous adage that “no publicity is bad publicity,” and while it tends to be accurate, there are certainly exceptions. But what about those few stars who stay out of the limelight and get along without a hint of trouble?

Driving traffic to your site can be a challenge, and one of the most difficult aspects of that challenge is getting Google and the other major search engines to trust your site and consequently increase its ranking position for high-value keywords. Though there are hundreds, possibly even thousands, of components that factor into Google’s ranking algorithm, inbound links (links from another site to your own site) are one of the most important.
To help make the process as painless as possible, we’ve put together the following guide. It will help highlight the importance of inbound links and explain some of the best ways to generate high-value links to your site.
Why you want inbound links
Inbound links do two main things:
1. Drive traffic to your site
Ever clicked on a link and wound up at a website you otherwise would never have found? That’s the power of inbound links. They bring you users who would not have gotten there otherwise.
2. Increase search engine ranking
Search engines want to give users the best results. If a site has many links from other sites, that’s usually a good sign that it has worthwhile content on it, and its search ranking will go up.
Want those things to happen? Of course you do.
Quick Tips
It’s no easy feat to generate inbound links, but here are some tips to get the ball rolling:
Link to other blogs
When someone smiles at you, thanks to mirror neurons, it’s likely that you’ll instinctively smile back. It might be a little different from a biological point of view, but when other bloggers see that you’ve linked to their site, they’re more likely to reciprocate and link to your site.
So when you write blogs (if you’re not doing that already, you should be), add some links to other blogs. With so much fantastic content on the web, it shouldn’t be hard to find resources that naturally fit into your posts.
Guest blog for other sites
Creating quality content is tough, which means most sites welcome the opportunity for a guest post on their blog. So set aside a few posts and reach out to various outlets to see if they’re interested. It’s common courtesy to allow at least one inbound link to your site per post. Don’t be surprised if they contact you in the future wondering if they can do the same on your site.
Create infographics
We live in a largely visual world. If you have information that you can craft, or have someone craft, into a compelling infographic, people will share that image and link back to you as the source. You might think to yourself, “I’m a loan officer; I can’t create infographics…”
Not so. You don’t have to be schooled in design, you just have to know some of the basics. There are many tutorials online that take as little as an hour to run through what you need to know to get started.
Considering your site will be around for a while, it could be worth it to learn how to design an infographic. Who knows? Maybe you’ll enjoy it.
Do something funny
Laughing is fun. Humor is one of the most desirable traits in a significant other for a reason. The mortgage industry isn’t known for its jokes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try your hand at some comedic relief.
The key here is to know your audience—the last thing you want to do is offend someone. So make sure you bounce your joke off several different people before sending it out into the internet. And if for some reason you aren’t sure how your idea will come across, don’t do it.
Influencer (Social Media) Marketing
When it comes down to it, you’re going to have to reach out and promote yourself if you want to generate inbound links. That means talking to social media influencers. They are seen as authorities of their industry, and therefore, links from them have a lot of weight. And as a bonus, they have followers that are ready to devour any content that’s fed to them. If you build up a good relationship with several influencers, you can find yourself with a steady stream of inbound links.
Who are your targets?
It’s important to properly identify your targets. You need to figure out who the biggest influencers are in the mortgage and real estate industries, and whittle down what relationships will be the most productive. There are a few different ways to go about doing this.
1. Analytics sites
There are several sites that have software that crawl social media sites to gather data which then goes through an algorithm, resulting in a score. The most popular are Klout, Kred, and PeerIndex.
Klout is kind of the de facto authority for ranking social media influencers. It’s fairly straightforward, the algorithm comes up with a score between 1-100, where 1 is the worst and 100 is the best. Klout is particularly notable in that it takes into account blog influence.
PeerIndex shares a lot of similarities with Klout. It does get into a little more detail with its reporting, but that’s about it.
Kred doesn’t just rate individuals based on influence, it adds in an outreach score that lets you know how often someone engages with other people.
2. Messing around on social media
It might sound crazy, but doing your own direct searches on Facebook, Twitter, and any other social media platform can help you discover new influencers. It’s a lot less low-tech than the algorithms, but it has its merits. If you’re wondering where to start, take a look at our article on maintaining your social media presence.
3. Search engines
You use google when you want to find out about nearly anything on the internet, so it only makes sense that you would use it when trying to find social media influencers. A good place to start is by googling different mortgage related topics to find out who the big names are in the mortgage blog world.
How will you reach out?
Twitter? Facebook? Email? Once you know who your targets are, you have to figure out how you will reach out to them. There are many ways to go about this. Will you have to offer a cold pitch or will you need to build a relationship with them first?
Having a standing relationship definitely makes the process easier, but that doesn’t mean you should be afraid to pitch an idea to someone you’ve never talked to before. If the idea is good enough and you sell it to them in the right way, it’s not out of the question that they’ll go for. In the end, don’t overthink it. The important part is that you make the effort and contact them.
Content Outreach and Promotion Tips
Keep the conversation going
Influencers are people, and people generally don’t like it when you only talk to them when you want something. That means reaching out to influencers only when you have a new post you want them to share is poor etiquette, and unlikely to help you build lasting relationships.
The solution? Engage when you can.
Make sure you’re following them on whatever social media platform they use and keep an eye out for their posts. Commenting on their posts shows that you aren’t just in it for the links. As you’ll see, there are other benefits to commenting on blogs.
Comment on other blogs
There’s a certain element of skill to this one. You can’t just say, “Nice post! Thanks for sharing. www.yourloanofficerwebsite.com.” Not only does that look like spam and will most likely get deleted before anyone sees, it looks desperate and doesn’t give a user any reason to follow your link.
You have to thoughtfully engage and respond with a comment that brings something to the table. That way people know that you are capable of bringing them value and will be more apt to click the link to see what else you have to say.
Bigger Outlets
Breaking into a popular media outlet like the NY Times or Wall St. Journal can be challenging. They most likely don’t know who you are, and sending the editor an article to read is basically guaranteed to get ignored. Editors are busy, and they only look at material from unknown writers who get vouched by someone they know. That’s why you should reach out to a writer on their staff.
Send them an email telling them how you really love their writing and point toward an article you’ve recently read (if you don’t already, start reading their work and find a piece that you can really engage with).
Flattery is all well and good, but what will really set you apart is if you can offer some sort of constructive criticism. Tell them that you think their readers would appreciate it if you added in so and so. You want to emphasize that you aren’t trying to be negative, you just want to keep seeing them producing high-quality content.
If your feedback has validity, they will probably be grateful that you reached out to them, and will respond. After a few emails back and forth, you can ask them how you would be able to get to their level and write for them.
There are no guarantees, but getting your work into more prominent media outlets will certainly increase your exposure, making the reward worth the effort.
How to Create Quality Content
Without quality content, no matter how suave of a networker you are, no one is going to link to your site. That means posting quality content on a consistent basis is of the utmost importance. How do you figure out how to do that? As part of our loan officer marketing series, we’ve already created a blog on Creating and Curating Content.
Bottom Line
Generating inbound links is one of the most important steps on the path to a thriving website. It also takes time, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t have a million links after a few weeks. Just keep on hacking away at it and eventually the links will come.

It’s now possible to activate all 5% category credit cards for the fourth quarter of 2023, including the Chase Freedom, Chase Freedom Flex, Discover IT, Citi Dividend, US Bank Cash+ and some smaller cards. In this post we’ll provide the activation link for each card and links to track your spend, along with strategies to help increase spend in these categories.
Dates: October 1st – December 31, 2023. Store purchases can usually be done until the last minute while online purchases should be given a buffer zone of a day or two.
Activation Link / FAQ / Sample Stores & Exclusions / Our original post
With the Freedom and Freedom Flex cards, activate to earn 5% back this quarter on up to $1,500 in spend at PayPal, Wholesale Clubs, and at Select Charities.
Paypal – Should work for any purchase with Paypal payment. This is always a easy and useful category given that many/most online retailers accept Paypal, e.g. Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc.
I sometimes pay my taxes with a credit card via Paypal to trigger this category, read more about paying taxes with a credit card in this post.
Some people might find it worthwhile to swallow the 2.9% Paypal fee and max out this category by paying family or friends with their Freedom card. Just note the fine print technically excludes this: “Person-to-Person (P2P) transactions made with your Chase Freedom card on PayPal may be prohibited or not eligible for 5%.”
You can also do your year-end charitable giving with Paypal payments on many charities, or to almost any charity with Paypal Giving Fund.
Readers note that if you use the Freedom Flex via Paypal at Dining or Drugstores you’ll end up getting 7x due to the extra 2x bonus the card has on those categories.
Wholesale Clubs – Should work for Costco, Sam’s Club, BJs, and similar.
Bear in mind, Costco in-club only accepts Visa cards; online you can use Mastercard as well, and you can even order Costco Cash cards for use in-club. Also note, gas at Costco will not work to earn the 5x; the workaround is to buy Costco Cash cards in-club and use those to purchase gas.
You can buy Sam’s Club gift cards at the club or online which can then be used at Walmart or Walmart.com or Walmart gas. (Or you can buy Walmart e-gift cards from Paypal Digital Gifts which also earns 5x as part of the Paypal category.)
Some wholesale clubs sell third-party gift cards or even Visa gift cards.
Exclusions: “Gas, fuel, wholesale specialty service purchases such as travel, insurance, cell phone and home improvement will not qualify in this category. Mastercard not accepted at Costco warehouses or at gas stations.”
Select Charities – includes: American Red Cross, Equal Justice Initiatives, Feeding America, Habitat for Humanity, International Medical Corps, International Rescue Committee, Leadership Conference Education Fund, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, National Urban League, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, United Negro College Fund, UNICEF USA, United Way, World Central Kitchen GLSEN, Out and Equal, Sage.

There is a significant difference between being an adult and behaving like one. Legally, teens become adults when they turn 18. It’s pretty common for teenagers to ponder the moment of their transition into adulthood and the distinguishing factors between being an adult and a child. Here’s a list of life skills we think every adult needs to know in order to really act like an adult.
1. Financial Management
Acquiring the ability to handle your financial matters is an essential life skill that every individual should grasp before reaching 18 years of age. Financial management encompa-es skills such as devising and adhering to a budget, saving funds, comprehending credit, and preparing for future expenditures. Acquiring strong financial management abilities in your youth can establish a foundation for long-term financial stability in the future. Learning how to prioritize critical expenses (like rent), avoid overspending, and save for emergencies and future goals is important. It’s never too early to start learning; kids as young as 7 or 8 can begin practicing with their allowance.
One Redditor said, “Developing skills of positive financial management is a process many overlook.”
Another also added, “So much this. Or even just understanding how to budget and a basic understanding of household bills.”
2. Good Hygiene
Proper hygiene is crucial for averting illnesses and diseases and enhancing personal appearance and contentment. Cultivate healthy routines like consistently washing your hands, caring for your oral hygiene, taking showers, and donning fresh clothing. Practicing good hygiene in public places and when you’re sick is also essential. By learning good hygiene at a young age, you can develop habits that benefit your own health and make it easier to keep a strong group of friends—giving you a healthier community overall.
3. Cooking
Cooking is important not only for saving money but also because it can teach you time management, budgeting, nutrition, and many other things. Cooking at home gives you greater control over the ingredients they use, which is especially helpful if you have allergies. Overall, learning how to cook is a valuable skill that provides numerous benefits, including increased self-sufficiency. It is never too early to start learning and developing cooking skills at a young age can set individuals up for a lifetime of healthy and enjoyable eating habits.
One user said, “Oh, and cooking some basic meals is a lifesaver. I don’t know why schools don’t have home economics cla-es. It’s such a shame.”
4. Simple First Aid
Acquiring a basic understanding of first aid holds significance, as it enables you to navigate emergencies without succumbing to the fight-or-flight instinct and instead provide practical a-istance. Basic first aid skills can help prevent injuries from worsening and sometimes even save lives. It’s good to know how to treat minor cuts, burns, and bruises and respond to choking, allergic reactions, and other medical emergencies. Knowing how to perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) usually requires certification, but it can be life-saving in some situations.
Understanding how to see the big picture in an emergency is important, such as a-essing the situation, calling paramedics, and staying calm and focused.
5. Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is how we carefully analyze information, evaluate evidence, and make logical decisions. The foundation of critical thinking is really just asking good questions, trying to find out all the relevant information before you make a decision, and developing your problem-solving abilities. The world is full of information, misinformation, and confusing situations (like finding an honest mechanic or negotiating with a landlord). The ability to think critically and ask good questions will take you a long way.
One Redditor said, “Don’t take things at face value; really consider what is being told to you, why, and by who. There are good people in the world of course, but there are many who do NOT have your best interest at heart and will attempt to take advantage of your ignorance. Go slow, listen, learn, and Think.”
6. Time Management
Time management is an essential life skill; it can benefit anyone at any age, but it’s particularly important to learn it as you move away from home and encounter the world on your own. Managing your time is important for everything from the obvious (working, school, making plans with friends), to cooking a meal or cleaning your house. As you become an adult, practice managing your time and creating a schedule or using a calendar or planner. Time management can help you be more productive, achieve your goals, and reduce stress.
7. Emotional Intelligence
Take some time as you become an adult to learn or brush up on emotional intelligence. You don’t have to read thoughts, but staying attentive to the emotions, reactions, and expressions of the people around you can teach you so much and help a lot with all kinds of relationships. Everything from working to dating relationships relies a lot on working with other people’s moods and emotions, even if they’re unfair. Developing these skills will help navigate social relationships and communicate clearly and effectively.
One Redditor added, “Emotional intelligence. I didn’t start developing this at all until I was in my late 20s. I feel like men especially struggle with this.”
8. Self Control
Delayed gratification is one of the hardest skills to learn: almost everybody is tempted by the instant payoff. Learning self-control is essential to make better decisions, regulate emotions, and achieve goals. Self-control skills include delayed gratification, but also impulse control, self-motivation, and stress management. The ability to manage your stress, keep yourself motivated, and keep control over your impulses will take you a long way in life.
One Redditor stated, “Self-control, you are now an adult, and whatever protections you had for your actions as a minor are largely gone, and the consequences are now higher.”
9. Communication Skills
Learning to communicate well can provide significant benefits, such as improved relationships, better academic performance, increased employability, improved mental health, and enhanced problem-solving abilities. Some ways to develop communication skills include practicing speaking, reading, and writing, joining clubs or organizations, active listening, and seeking feedback. Whatever way you find to practice, do it with mindfulness and intention, not just to get it done.
10. Developing Your Own Opinions
Developing your opinions is an important skill to develop before age 18 because it helps you become a critical thinker and an independent individual. It is essential to form your own opinions based on evidence, logic, and reasoning rather than simply adopting the beliefs of others.
11. Learn a New Skill
As you age and become more independent, don’t stop studying and learning new things. New skills are not only just interesting (and make you a more interesting person), but they can increase your overall joy, inspire you in your school or career, and keep your mind sharp. Some really valuable skills to consider brushing up on include a foreign language, coding or computer programming, public speaking, writing, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
As a user added, “There are a lot of skills one should possess before turning 18; they include social skills, communication networking, tech skills, video editing, graphics designing, and coding…”
While you might not try to learn those exact skills for your personal career path, keep studying and learning whatever direction you decide to take.
