When you ask people about their favorite season, few will likely say winter. However, there’s an undeniable sense of calm that comes with this period of hibernation, regardless if you live in a house in chilly Minneapolis, MN, or an apartment in Miami, FL. Even more unique is the feeling you get when the first warm breezes of spring arrive but winter still holds us in its mysteries.
In this article, Apartment Guide interviews expert candlemakers and sellers to find the scents that evoke both the coziness and moodiness of winter while also celebrating the promise of spring. We promise it will make scents as you keep reading!
Find harmony between dark and light
As the long, dark nights of winter shift to brighter days, the best winter-spring candle scents merge the moodiness of winter and the breeziness of spring. Try to find a candle that balances both vibes seamlessly.
“During this seasonal shift, I find that incorporating fresh citrus notes into my space provides a revitalizing touch reminiscent of the upcoming spring while still holding on to the cozy warmth of winter,” states Tianna Dean of Hummingbird Candle Company. “Blends of lemongrass, lime, and lemon top notes evoke a refreshing burst of citrus, symbolizing the awakening of spring, while the underlying notes of jasmine, black currant, and patchouli add a touch of warmth reminiscent of the lingering winter.”
Add a touch of aquatic fragrance
The pool is still closed, and you might not be ready to plan your beachside vacation quite yet. However, aquatic notes transport you to the relaxed feeling of lounging by the water.
“As the seasons shift, our my favorite transitional scent is our spring candle scent that evokes Oklahoma during a thunderstorm,” says Rico Smith of 46th State Candle. “With refreshing notes of eucalyptus, spearmint, and sea salt, it captures the invigorating essence of spring rain while still offering a hint of winter’s crispness, making it the perfect choice for transitioning between winter and spring seasons.”
Similarly, Jennifer Smyth of Modern Zen Candle Company notes: “Fragrances like sea salt and orchid orchestrate a coastal symphony, harmonizing sea salt’s crispness, jasmine’s soft touch, and tonka bean’s warmth — nature’s transition from chilly winds to the gentle caress of spring. For even more beachy vibes, bamboo and coconut whisk you away to a tranquil paradise with bamboo’s freshness, coconut milk’s creaminess, and pineapple’s sweetness—a scent that embodies a springtime escape.”
Opt for solar fragrances
AURA Candle Bar owner Linda Pendry suggests solar fragrances, or scent profiles evocative of tropical blooms. “Solar fragrances are top of mind as spring break plans interrupt the cold winter months with fragrances such as sea breeze, citrus facets of neroli or even the floral notes of olive blossom. Warmer base notes such as exotic agarwood, sensual driftwood, or smokey cedar lend themselves to grounding the fragrance as we all patiently await the longer days ahead as springtime unfolds.”
Try a combination of floral and woody notes
“I love burning candles that have a woody and floral scent with a hint of spice during the transition from winter to spring,” shares Reis Chester, founder of REISFIELDS NYC. “My go-to choice has a masterfully crafted blend of soft woody guaiac wood, fresh French roses, geranium, and violets. It is finally topped off with a subtle hint of black pepper and clove. Giving you the warmth of winter with the freshness of spring.”
“Our favorite scent for the transition months between winter and spring is a blend of dahlia and sandalwood,” says Nicola Hines of Candlish. “It reminds us of a lush wooded flower field in the spring and has a sophisticated and luxurious aroma that will uplift your mood. The comforting scent of slightly sweet base note sandalwood blends harmoniously with warm amber, light lemon zest, sultry jasmine, and yellow dahlia petals which gives off well-balanced and soft floral notes that are earthy and intriguing.”
Earthy and fresh scents win the season
From the crisp aroma of freshly cut pine to the grounding scent of damp earth after rainfall, earthy and fresh scents reign supreme this season.
“Most will gravitate to a floral-scented candle this time of year, but I’d recommend something with notes like white sage and lavender to cleanse the space of ghosts and emotional winter baggage,” says Jesse Regis of Virgins on Fire Candle Co.
Similarly, Kylie Antolini of Wildwood Candle Company recommends combining the freshness of earthy scents with the brightness of citrus to evoke a wooded meadow filled with flowers.
She says, “My favorite scents for transitioning out of winter into spring have a mix of grounding, earthy floral notes and brightness — for example, one of our candles has blended notes of ylang-ylang (grounding, floral), orange blossom (bright, floral), green fig (ripeness, rebirth, bright, green), and lavender (grounding, floral). It’s not only a wonderful year-round scent, but particularly wonderful coming out of winter, as our noses have missed smelling fragrant flowers in the sunshine.”
Or, as Wes at Milwaukee Candle Company says, “As winter surrenders to spring, lose yourself in the harmonious fusion of brightening citrus and comforting woodsy scents. The invigorating notes of blood orange signify nature’s awakening, while a deep, rich mahogany evokes the cozy embrace of winter. This blend effortlessly bridges the gap between winter hibernation and the blooming warmth of spring, creating a sensory experience that captures the essence of both seasons in perfect harmony.”
And if you want the earthy freshness that instantly reminds you of a luxurious spa, white tea takes the cake. Kianna Cornelia of Cornelia Home states, “Our favorite scent for the transition months between winter and spring is white tea. This aromatherapy fragrance promotes wellness and calmness, allowing you to enjoy a tranquil spa-like experience anywhere in your home.”
Find comfort with a sweeter fragrance
Though often thought of as solely winter candle scents, sweeter notes go with any season – so check in with your mood instead of the thermometer outside when it comes to finding a signature scent for March. And if we’re being honest – who isn’t in the mood for dessert, no matter the season?
According to Nose Best Candles, you can’t go wrong with gourmand scents, which are typically dessert-like scents like vanilla, almond, sugar and caramel. “When in doubt, go gourmand! The weather is so unpredictable during this time. So instead of trying to match the weather outside, find comfort in something like a snickerdoodle or banana nut bread. This will make your home smell like a 5-star bakery that you’ll never want to leave.”
Erika Whitus of Southern Charm Candle also chimed in: “When the holidays have passed, and we are in the cozy moments spent indoors waiting for the vibrant lively atmosphere of spring, our favorite scents are ones that combine elements of the fresh, sweet aroma of fruit with the warmth and comfort of a fresh-baked dessert. Juicy ripe strawberries, zesty lemons, or tropical bananas provide a refreshing burst of energy like spring itself whereas the comforting aroma of vanilla provides a grounding effect of waiting for your mom’s favorite recipes.”
Marry winter and spring with a musky scent
Fuse the essence of winter and spring with a musky scent, bridging the gap between the crisp chill of snow-covered landscapes and the burgeoning warmth of blooming flowers.
Ky Candle Company has a cashmere-blend scent, which is the perfect concoction to take you from winter to spring, according to owner, Sheena Bromagen. “It has warm, earthy notes of saffron and amber paired with the light floral fragrances of lily of the valley and violets. It’s rich and soft, calming and warm – a perfect scent all year!”
Or, as Tanisha Burke from Malaysian Lights puts it, “I have found the most favored scents between winter, and spring is something fresh and clean. My bestseller boasts notes of ozone, soothing musk, fresh flowers, and light coconut with a sandalwood base. The second scent that is found to be very popular between these seasons has plenty of cinnamon and vanilla. The cinnamon spice notes combined with rich, warm vanilla is a customer favorite.”
Experiment with olive
Pull out the olive scents if you want to try something refreshing and unique for the transition season. It offers an earthy balance of mellowness and warmth that lends itself to both winter and spring.
“Olive is my favorite fragrance for transitioning into spring!” says Clara Bailey from MacBailey Candle Co. “It is a complex fragrance that has a base of musk and vanilla, which bring in the cozy feelings of winter. The warm earthy middle notes add texture, while the top notes of orange and lemon bring in the fresh and clean notes of spring.”
Glenda from Palmetto Scent Studio recommends this right-now-ready scent, too: “As you prepare to transition your home from winter to spring, it’s important to take inspiration from the feelings we experience during this time of rejuvenation. Everyone’s anticipating the fresh, fragrant breezes to come, but there is still a slight chill in the air. Consider a scent that blends soft and cozy scents like cashmere with light, botanical notes like the sophisticated tea olive. These blends will help set a tone of anticipation as we await spring buds to emerge.”
Wow with deep, wood-forward notes
Whether you picture a large bonfire on a chilly night or a slow-burning fireplace in a cozy den, wood scents add to any winter scene. But did you know woody scents also transitioned well into warmer weather?
Alex at Kindred Homestead Supply notes how woody scents might evoke the season’s turn. “In this transitional period between winter and spring, the earthy blend of smokey oak, tobacco leaf, and a subtle touch of vanilla provides a comforting and enveloping atmosphere in our living spaces. These scents serve as a warm embrace, encouraging us to appreciate the restorative quiet of winter, while we eagerly look forward to the rejuvenation spring brings.”
Another expert adds her thoughts about this scent profile. “For us, it’s all about the blend of earthy, woodsy scents with a pop of floral freshness,” says Diane Mendoza of Never Alone Candles. “Think the floral vibrancy of lavender mixed with the earthy depth of oakmoss. It’s the perfect scent combo for transitioning from the cozy, reflective winter to the fresh, hopeful vibes of spring — like a breath of fresh air for your living space.”
Spring forward with flowers and citrus
Of course, you can skip the woody, spicy or sweet notes in your winter candle scents if you’ve been long-awaiting spring. We encourage you to go ahead and embrace every warm breeze – while lighting candles in scents that speed the next season along.
According to an owner at Gratus Candles,” Our favorite transitional scents from winter to spring would have to be a mixture of earthy, citrus and floral! This is because while our senses are use to those traditional winter fragrances filled with spices, earthy, and sweet notes, transitioning to fragrances that embody the warmer weather, such as: citrus and floral, while keeping true to those earth notes, will bring a familiarity to your visitors while easing them into the welcoming spring scents of the new season!
Caitlin Wheeler of Old North Candle Company explains this perfectly. “Our favorite way to transition from winter to spring scents is to focus on light, fruity blends. It feels too early to commit to floral scents, but most of the winter scents feel a bit heavy for this time of year. Fragrance notes of mint and chamomile are comforting on those lingering cold days, while mandarin and basil notes brighten up the scent to welcome in those airy, spring mornings.”
This sentiment seems to be echoed by other candle entrepreneurs, too. “Citrus and delicate floral fragrances are ideal for the season, as they offer a light, refreshing touch and harmonize beautifully when paired together,” posits Neosha Franklin, Owner & Candle artisan of Serene Nights Candle Co. “Our premier fragrance pick for the transition from winter to spring boasts a delightful fusion of citrus pear, cherry, and deep musk, creating an enchanting aroma perfectly suited for this season.”
In a similar vein, Two Chicks Candles’ owners Cassandra and Latoya Cargile chime in with their own poetic advice. “As we tiptoe into the whimsical realm of spring, let’s embrace the dance of melting snow and rejuvenating rain showers with aquatic delights like sea salt, ocean breeze, and the ethereal fragrance of exotic lotus flowers, elegant water lilies and delicate orchids — nature’s symphony of renewal.
These scents aren’t just whispers on the wind; they’re soul-cleansing reminders that winter’s grasp is fading, making way for spring’s gentle embrace. Embark on an aromatic journey where each inhale is a celebration of renewal and the enchanting allure of changing seasons. A blend of sea salt, lush green leaves, amber and freesia perfectly captures this transition.”
In the ever-evolving landscape of real estate, each generation brings its own set of preferences and priorities to the table. As millennials gradually step aside, Gen Z is stepping up, reshaping the way we think about homeownership and the places we call home. Born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, Gen Z is a generation marked by digital fluency, environmental consciousness, and a penchant for experiences over possessions. So, what does this mean for the real estate market?

Embracing Urbanity with a Twist
Unlike their predecessors who favoured suburban sprawls, Gen Z is showing a distinct preference for urban living – but with a twist. They seek vibrant, walkable neighbourhoods that offer a plethora of amenities within arm’s reach. Think mixed-use developments where residential spaces seamlessly blend with retail, dining, and entertainment options. For Gen Z, the ideal neighbourhood isn’t just a place to live; it’s a hub of activity and connection.
Flexibility Reigns Supreme
In a world characterized by rapid change and uncertainty, flexibility is paramount. Gen Z values the freedom to adapt and evolve, and this extends to their housing preferences. The traditional model of homeownership may not hold the same allure for Gen Z as it did for previous generations. Instead, many are opting for rental properties or co-living arrangements that offer flexibility without the long-term commitment.
Sustainability as a Non-Negotiable
Environmental consciousness is ingrained in the DNA of Gen Z. They’re acutely aware of the impact of climate change and are committed to making eco-friendly choices – including when it comes to housing. From energy-efficient appliances to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) or Energy Star certified buildings, sustainability is a non-negotiable for many Gen Z homebuyers. They’re drawn to eco-conscious developments that prioritize green spaces, renewable energy, and sustainable building practices.
Tech-Savvy Living
Having grown up in the digital age, Gen Z has an insatiable appetite for technology. Smart homes equipped with cutting-edge automation features are not just a luxury – they’re a necessity. Gen Z homebuyers expect seamless technology integration into every aspect of their living space, from smart thermostats and lighting systems to voice-controlled assistants and security cameras. For Gen Z, a home isn’t truly modern unless it’s smart.
Community and Connection
Despite their digital prowess, Gen Z craves authentic human connection. They value community and seek out spaces that foster social interaction and collaboration. Co-living spaces, communal amenities, and shared workspaces are all appealing to Gen Z homebuyers who prioritize relationships and networking. They’re drawn to neighbourhoods that feel like tight-knit communities, where neighbours are friends and every interaction is an opportunity to connect.

Industry veteran Dave Savula has joined Dallas Market Center as executive vice president of leasing, the company has announced. Savula is responsible for growth strategy and permanent showroom leasing in gift, home decor/design, and lighting. He brings more than twenty-five years of experience to Dallas Market Center, most recently having served in executive roles with IMC and AmericasMart. Savula reports to Dallas Market Center president and CEO, Cindy Morris.
“Dave has been extremely valuable to our team in a consulting role over the last six months, and in this new position will accelerate his efforts to grow the business and attract top brands,” said Cindy Morris. “Our company and customers will benefit from his experience and relationships as more brands and agencies seek a marketplace with strong ROI delivering buyers from coast to coast for markets and with an unmatched open-daily business.”
Savula joins Dallas Market Center during a time of compelling growth in the number of new buyers visiting the marketplace and new brands taking space in its 5 million square foot collection of buildings, including showrooms exclusive to Dallas and flagship showrooms serving retailers from coast to coast. The most recent Total Home & Gift Market and Lightovation show welcomed more than 30 new and expanding showrooms; and new buyer attendance was at its highest in five years, including a surge in buyers from the western and southwestern U.S.
“Dallas Market Center has a strong legacy but most impressive is its energy, excitement, and trajectory today,” said Dave Savula. “This is where buyers and brands want to do business, so I’m thrilled to join the company. I’ve spent time getting to know the ownership and leadership, and they are deeply committed to the business for the long-term and capitalizing on their momentum.”
Savula joins a team of leadership in gift, home, and lighting that includes Jo Ann Miller Marshall, SVP Leasing for Temps; Lori Castillo, VP Leasing for Home & Design; Patty Price, VP Leasing for Lighting; Nancy Axtman and Brittany Rigg, Leasing Directors for Gift.
Gift remains one of the largest and most popular product categories represented at Dallas Market Center across multiple buildings. For home décor, Dallas Market Center is the largest open-daily design center in North America, with more than 1.5 million square feet of leading home and design manufacturers. Each month, thousands of interior designers visit the marketplace, and design events throughout the year are held in partnership with industry organizations and media partners. Four times a year, the Total Home & Gift Markets welcome gift and home buyers from around the world. Twice a year, the marketplace hosts the largest residential lighting trade event in North America, Lightovation.
Savula most recently served as EVP of IMC and president of Gift and Apparel. Previously, he served AmericasMart as EVP for more than twenty years. Prior to that, he was VP of Leasing for MMPI/High Point Market.
When home-furnishings mogul Evan Cole set out to build a home in Los Angeles, he wanted a classic design that would mesh seamlessly with his neighbor: the famed 110-acre Getty Center with its curved, marble buildings.
“The whole goal was to…make sure it matched the Getty—that it didn’t look out of place up there,” said Cole, who co-founded the home division of ABC Carpet & Home in New York City in the 1980s and later, California-based home furnishings company HD Buttercup.
Working with architect Thomas Juul-Hansen, Cole spent more than five years building a roughly 15,000-square-foot house clad in travertine marble. During that time, his family relocated to Aspen, Colo., and he is now putting the six-bedroom house on the market for $68 million, according to listing agents Branden and Rayni Williams of the Beverly Hills Estates, who have the listing with Kurt Rappaport of the Westside Estate Agency.

“Doing this house is the culmination of all of my work, to be honest with you,” said Cole, 63, a Queens, N.Y., native.
The roughly 2-acre Brentwood property sits on a hilltop next to the Getty Center. When he drove up to the L.A. property in the early 2000s, Cole said he was immediately attracted to the location’s privacy and views. “When you’re there, you don’t feel like anybody can see you,” he said. “It’s like having a perch.”
He paid about $5 million for the site in 2004, he said. At the time, the property contained a “cool California ranch” house spanning 2,000 square feet. Cole lived there with his wife and two children there for eight years while he mulled over plans for a new residence. “Every day, I was like, ‘I’ve got to do something with this place,’” he recalled. “It took me eight years to figure it out.”
Cole was hung up on the idea of building something classic that would be “symbiotic” with the Getty next door, he said. He credited Juul-Hansen with designing a building that could be a “sister” to the museum.
MANSION GLOBAL BOUTIQUE: The New Old School: Eclectic Grandpa Home Decor
The three-story residence has 20-foot ceilings in the entryway and living room, which feature frameless glass sliding doors. A gym overlooking West L.A. has 60 feet of glass. “From every angle in the house, you have a view,” Cole said. Atop the house, there is a roughly 5,000-square-foot roof deck.
The house has two primary bedrooms and a “mother-in-law suite” with its own kitchen, Cole said. There is also a wine room and a spa with a sauna and massage room. The grounds have a kidney-shaped pool that cantilevers over the hillside.
Most of the materials came from Europe, including solid oak doors, Murano lighting and acoustic wood panels for the ceiling, Cole said. The house is clad in travertine sourced from the same quarry in Italy that provided the materials for the Getty. Cole said he relied on his contacts to source materials for the house. “I know where to buy the good stuff,” he said. “I could not have done any of this if I were not in the business.”
More: $20 Million Penthouse Is The Biggest Sale So Far This Year on Manhattan’s Upper West Side
Cole declined to say how much he spent building the house. Before it was completed, Covid hit and his family relocated to Aspen. Although he travels between Colorado, New York and L.A., he doesn’t want to uproot his children by moving them back to L.A. “It’s time to move on,” he said.
While Cole said he planned to move into his latest creation, he has never even spent the night. (He does, however, keep bottles of Fiji water in the fridge.) He has built several family homes in New York and L.A., he said, and feels that building is about the journey, not the result. “I have felt like whoever gets it, it’s theirs,” he said. “I’m like it’s shepherd rather than its master.”
Despite a slowdown in the luxury market nationwide and in L.A., the number of single-family home sales in Brentwood during 2023’s fourth quarter rose 15.6% compared with the prior-year period, according to real-estate appraisal firm Miller Samuel. The median sale price for single-family homes grew 3.8% year-over-year to $4.3 million.
While the overall L.A. market has softened, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades have remained attractive, seeing “a really good uptick” in deals, Branden Williams said. “Everybody loves to be on the west side,” he said.
Inside: Explore top high income skills that don’t require a degree. From AI to Cybersecurity to copywriting, learn how to earn big and without a traditional education.
In today’s rapidly changing economy, traditional educational paths such as acquiring a master’s degree are no longer the sole route to a lucrative career.
In my own journey, I discovered that mastering certain high-income skills (stock trading) can lead to financial success that outpaces even those with advanced degrees. This revelation underscores the value of investing time and effort into developing marketable abilities that align with industry demands.
These high-paying skills, often honed through online platforms, specialized training, and real-world experience, provide a level of flexibility. Plus an earning potential that can exceed the prospects of conventional academic education.
As such, they represent a powerful, alternate paradigm for career advancement and personal growth that you may want to check out.
Quick Answer
Typically, these are based on online jobs that include expertise in certain fields. These roles leverage the digital space to generate significant income and careers are in demand into the foreseeable future.
You can learn and develop these skills through online educational platforms, which can open up a plethora of high-paying job opportunities without the need for traditional college credentials.
High Income Skills for Tech and Digital Domination
In case you haven’t heard, AI and the tech world are the focus of most high paying jobs.
In fact, Microsoft, Google, and Apple recently stated they will take certification over a college degree.1
Now, let’s explore the various high-income skills that are currently shaping the technology sector and will move to making over six figures.
AI and machine learning
AI and machine learning are not just buzzwords! These fields represent some of the most lucrative areas in tech. As businesses seek ways to make sense of big data, professionals who can design intelligent systems and algorithms are in high regard.
The beauty is that many resources exist to self-educate in this domain, such as online courses, bootcamps, and certifications, making the path accessible for those without a formal business degree.
Best for: This field is ideal for individuals who have a strong aptitude for mathematics, statistics, and programming, and who are passionate about tech and innovation.
Mastering SEO
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has become a coveted skill in the arsenal of every digital strategist. Why is it so invaluable? Because it acts as the linchpin for visibility in the digital space.
SEO isn’t just about playing with keywords; it’s about understanding the user’s intent, the algorithms of search engines, and the technical makeup of websites to ensure they’re discoverable.
Mastering SEO involves a cocktail of abilities: from understanding meta tags and crafting content that resonates with both humans and search engines, to building a robust backlink portfolio.
Best for: SEO is suited for those who enjoy both the analytical and creative sides of digital marketing and are interested in a dynamic, ever-evolving field.
Cybersecurity
In the digital age, cybersecurity is not just important—it’s essential. Protecting sensitive data and maintaining the integrity of computer systems against threats can be the difference between a thriving business and one that’s exposed to potentially catastrophic breaches.
Notably, cybersecurity proficiency can often be achieved through specialized certifications, bootcamps, or practical experience rather than a traditional degree. Those who commit to ongoing education and remain vigilant of the industry’s pulse become indispensable assets in any organization.
Best for: Perfect for individuals who have a knack for problem-solving, are detail-oriented, and enjoy learning about technology’s cutting edge.
Software Development
As the pillars of our increasingly digital world, software developers write the code that powers everything from mobile applications to global banking systems. The lure of software development as a high-paying skill is evident.
It’s foundational to virtually every industry, offers diverse opportunities for specialization, and provides the satisfaction of building something tangible.
With abundant online resources like coding bootcamps and tutorials, passionate learners can bypass the traditional degree route and directly jump into this lucrative and fulfilling career.
Best for: Individuals who are logical, detail-oriented, and have a strong interest in technology and its potential applications will find a career in software development both rewarding and profitable.
Mobile app development
Mobile App Development is your ticket into the heart of the booming app economy. As smartphone ubiquity grows, so does the need for innovative apps that simplify life—whether that’s for banking, shopping, or entertainment.
Given the high demand for mobile experiences, companies are willing to pay top dollar for developers who can craft intuitive and effective mobile applications. The best part is that this skill can be honed through free courses or even app-building software for those with limited coding knowledge.
Best for: Perfect for those who are not only passionate about coding but also keen on understanding and improving how users interact with technology.
Blockchain Expertise
The field of blockchain has transcended its association purely with cryptocurrencies to become a high-value asset in various sectors. Businesses seek talented individuals who can leverage this technology for secure, decentralized solutions.
Unlike many traditional roles, the burgeoning blockchain field offers the chance for self-taught experts to demonstrate their value based on their skills, portfolio, and understanding of blockchain’s practical applications.

Creativity Pays Off with These High Income Skills

The journey to mastering graphic design can be self-directed—you can learn the principles online, through software tutorials, and practice them into existence.
Best for: Individuals with a flair for the arts who enjoy thinking creatively to solve visual challenges and like the aspect of using technology.
Video Production & Editing
In a content-driven era, where video is king, mastery in this field could land you lucrative gigs across various platforms and industries.
Whether it’s for digital marketing, entertainment, or online education, the demand is high, and the barrier to entry is lower than ever—thanks to a plethora of self-teaching resources and accessible technology.

Photography captures more than images; it encapsulates emotions, stories, and moments. With the advent of high-quality smartphone cameras and affordable DSLRs, the skill of professional photography is more accessible than ever.
Whether for stock photography, events, or branding, your keen eye for composition and lighting can open doors to a rewarding career without the need for a degree.
Best for: Individuals with a passion for visual arts, a creative mindset, and a strong sense of detail are often the best fit for a high-income career in professional photography.
Copywriting
The pen (or keyboard) can indeed be mightier than the sword in today’s digital-driven world through copywriting.

So whether you’re looking to bring love into your home in Medford, MA, or apartment in Portland, ME, embark on this journey to discover how simple, intentional choices can significantly enhance the love-filled ambiance within the walls of your home.
1. Display large artwork
Incorporating large artwork into your home serves as a great way to bring love into your living space, as it adds visual appeal and reflects personal taste and emotions.
“Any large artwork that depicts love or people working together in harmony is a great way to bring love into your home. Be sure to position it in your hall so it is the first thing you see or in your living room,” notes consultant Feng Shui West Country.
2. Decorate with a custom area rug
Bringing a custom area rug into your home offers functional and stylish benefits.
“It helps define and delineate different living spaces within an open floor plan, creating a sense of organization and intimacy. A custom rug allows you to express your unique taste and tie together various design elements, adding warmth, texture, and personality to your living space,” states family business The Carpet Workroom.
3. Clean with your loved ones
One of the keys to bringing love into a home is to approach house cleaning with a positive mindset and a focus on creating a loving and harmonious environment.
“Involve your loved ones in the cleaning process to promote teamwork and togetherness,” shares Le Vvintre Living Luxury Cleaning Services. “Assign appropriate tasks to each person and work together to clean and organize the home. This not only lightens the workload but also strengthens bonds and fosters a sense of unity.”
“Nothing says you care like a home that’s not only clean but also radiates a welcoming scent that hugs you the moment you walk through the door. Imagine the gentle fragrance filling your home, creating an atmosphere where love thrives in every corner,” adds Affordable Cleaning Today.
4. Hand-select consignment home decor
Hand-selecting consignment home decor infuses each piece in your home with unique character and history, creating a personalized and curated living space that reflects your individual style.
Lori Schroeder of Consign Couture remarks, “Transform your living space into a haven of love by carefully hand-selecting consignment home décor that resonates with your style. Explore local consignment shops or online platforms to discover unique pieces that evoke positive emotions, memories, and love.”
5. Bring in candles
Introducing scented candles into your home is a delightful way to bring love into your space, as the soft, warm glow creates an intimate and cozy ambiance.
“Nothing whispers ‘I love you’ quite like the soft flicker and warm scent of a beautifully crafted candle,” says luxury candle company melt. “Imagine a candle that blends the sultry notes of rose with the exotic whispers of orchid, setting the stage for those oh-so-precious moments of connection. It’s like a love letter but in fragrance form.”
6. Think in pairs of two
Reiko Gomez of Reiko Home recommends, “In the bedroom, create balance and harmony in by having two bedside tables and two table lamps that are relatively equal in size and style. Think of ways to make your bedroom feel like a cozy cocoon of rest. For example, adding a plush rug, pretty bedding and thick curtains, of fresh cut flowers. A space that feels serene, soft, and inviting attracts good experiences into your life.”
Rose quartz crystals are believed to emanate a gentle and compassionate energy.
“In Feng Shui, love is associated with the element of earth, shares transformation expert LMG Creative. “Bring loving earth energy into your home with two rose quartz crystals. Ensure the pair is balanced in size to symbolize an equal partnership.”
7. Bring in love through floral designs
Incorporating floral design adds a touch of nature’s beauty, infusing the space with freshness and positivity.
Designer Avalana Simpson from Avalana Design comments, “Romantic florals in interior design will always stand the test of time. There’s something about hand-painted cascading flowers in full bloom, which brings a level of warmth, love, and contentment to a space. Often, flower power is overlooked for bedrooms, but intricate oversized blooms are perfect for adding a little love.”
8. Decorate with flowers
Flowers’ vibrant colors and natural fragrances create a visually appealing and emotionally uplifting atmosphere, thus bringing love into your home.
“Flowers are consistently a quintessential way to bring feelings of love into your home. From the sweet fragrance to the eye-catching color palette of a spring bouquet, bright blossoms emit an aesthetic that elevates your mood,” says flower company Fleurish Floral Studio.
“Try introducing fresh-cut flowers for a touch of natural beauty and freshness in your home while creating a warm and inviting atmosphere with soft lighting to enhance feelings of comfort and connection,” adds cleaning service Elite Maids RVA.

9. Hang photos of loved ones
Hanging photos of loved ones is a heartfelt way to bring love into your home, as the visual reminders of cherished moments and relationships.
“Hanging a framed photo of loved ones or special moments in your life can create a positive and nostalgic atmosphere in your living space. They also serve as great conversation starters as guests will inquire about the story behind the photos,” shares Kyle Cong Photography.
Brindy Ruby Photography says, “One of my favorite ways to bring love into my home is through photographs. The best photos to hang up are the ones where there is a true connection between loved ones. This could look like giggles while running through a field or snuggles on the couch.”
“Photos are a great way to bring love into your home. Display some in photo frames on shelves or cluster them together on a living room wall. A scrapbook or photo album can hold more loving memories. If you prefer digital, there are several digital photo frames that keep a slideshow of all of your favorite photos and can be updated at any time,” adds Leslie and Carlos of Absolute Luxury LLC.
10. Bring in plants
Taking care of plants fosters a sense of responsibility and connection with nature, contributing to a home environment that radiates love, care, and a touch of the outdoors.
“To bring more love into your home, fill it with things you love,” recommends watercolor painter My Giant Strawberry. “I’m an artist and a gardener so I always need to be surrounded by plants and art. Think about what brings you the most joy, whether it’s a reminder of those you love, mementos from special trips, or even just your favorite colors.”
“The bathroom rarely receives the kind of interior design attention our living rooms or bedrooms enjoy. Still, these smaller, occasionally steamy spaces are the perfect environment for all sorts of potted pals. Spider plants thrive in bathrooms due to their ability to tolerate low light and high humidity levels, for example, and it’s a similar story to the ever-in-vogue Monstera. Don’t be worried about accidentally killing them, either. Both of these specimens are extra hardy and require very little care,” adds Plant Studio.
11. Create a cozy corner
“We love the ‘cozy corner’ trend,” states luxury gift company MyCOCCO. “It’s all about carving out a little nook of comfort and tranquility in your home. Drawing inspiration from the Danish hygge concept, which is all about coziness and finding joy in the simple things.”
Add a snug armchair with a fluffy blanket thrown over it, a small shelf within arm’s reach stocked with beloved books, and a soft lamp casting a warm glow. This spot can become a private retreat for enjoying those quiet moments of reflection or losing oneself in a good read, creating the perfect backdrop for love to bloom in the simplest of activities.
12. Scent up your space
The subtle aroma of scents like vanilla, lavender, or citrus can foster a loving and cozy atmosphere.
“One of the ways to bring love into your home is through fragrance. This could be in the form of candles, diffusers, and room sprays. Pick up a candle or reed diffuser on your next grocery shopping trip and bring love into your home,” recommends candle business Nneka’s Candle Blog.
“If you’re looking for a fragrant welcome to your home, why not try a reed diffuser in your hallway or porch? There are many refreshing scents like Rhubarb & Ginger Gin with a touch of lime. Bring some love back into your bathroom with a eucalyptus and peppermint room spray with a built-in odor eliminator, making it the perfect choice to freshen any room,” shares scent company Lumiescents.
13. Paint the walls in a different color
Selecting warm and soothing tones can also create a loving environment.
Brilho Cleaning Services says, “Consider using warm and inviting colors like soft shades of red or muted tones of pink to create a cozy atmosphere in your home. Opt for colors that resonate with positive emotions, bringing a sense of warmth and connection. Balance vibrant hues with neutral tones for a harmonious and comforting environment.”
14. Hang plates on your walls
Hanging plates is a charming way to bring love into your home, as the carefully arranged display not only adds a touch of personal style but also reflects a sense of cherished memories.
“One way I bring love into our home is to decorate with plates we find at stores,” notes photographer Jeanna Hayes. “Sometimes, they have special meaning to us, and other times, we just like the pattern and buy it while we are together at the store. We are always on the hunt for our plate wall.”

15. Adding cool furniture pieces
Adding carefully chosen furniture pieces to your home is a thoughtful way to bring love, as each item can contribute to making the space feel like your own.
“Enhance the love in your home by incorporating comfortable and inviting furniture, creating spaces that encourage togetherness and relaxation,” shares mindfulness expert Still Jacey. “Select pieces with sentimental value or unique designs that resonate with your personal style, infusing warmth and personality into your living spaces.”
“My Uncle John would probably roll over in his grave to see his favorite chair covered in pale coral and pink. But I loved my Uncle and the memory of him sitting in his cozy, comfy chair with brown upholstery,” remarks florist Camrose Hill. “Instead of getting rid of the chair, I transformed it by upholstering it into something that fits my space and that I love.”
16. Host dinner parties
Hosting dinner parties and wine nights is a delightful way to bring love into your home, fostering a sense of connection and warmth through shared meals and good conversation.
“I love hosting dinner parties and wine nights for friends and family, which has resulted in the most beautiful memories in this space. I believe that the best parts of a home aren’t the physical items you have in it, but the people who are there to share moments with you,” shares photographer Taylor Rossi.
Interior designer shares 4 things to avoid while decorating your new home. Pic Credit: Canva
You have bought a new home and congratulations are now in order, but now is the time to add more depth and beauty to your humble abode by decorating it in a manner that maintains the aesthetic of the room. From choosing the right lighting to the colour palette of the furniture, what you install can go a long way in making your house look like home.
While people sometimes choose to go with their instincts and choices while designing their homes, a little help from experts can help find the middle ground between making the right choices without having to compromise on your preferences. So, if you are wondering how to go about decorating your home, interior designer Sonika Khurana Sethi, founder of Coloraza Design Studio shares 4 things homeowners should avoid while making their home.
1) Mounting water purifiers on the wall
For those who already have purifiers installed on the wall, you can admit that the setup looks a bit messy, especially the pipes that run along the purifier and cover the walls, giving it an untidy look. Not to forget, the gradual dampening of the walls or the salt deposits on the counter and fungus on the pipes from the dripping water droplets further ruin the material and look of the overall kitchen.
To avoid this mistake, get your water purifiers installed inside the cabinet beneath the kitchen sink which will not only make space to install a tap on the countertop to fill water but also keep the pipes hidden to beautify the space. You can also choose to fit a modern purifier on the upper cabinets to make it easier to drink and fill water into the bottles.
2) Installing tube lights in the room
Gone are the days when tube lights used to brighten almost every home in India. While they serve an important purpose, replacing them with modern methods, such as ambient and accented lighting can greatly change the outlook of your home. Install ceiling lighting, gorgeous lamp fixtures or decor items with tinted lighting available in different shapes and sizes to make your home look modern and chic.
3) Keeping matching sofa sets
Matching sofa sets have adorned our homes for a long time, but now is the time to cast them aside and introduce sofas with contrasting palettes to add more colour to your living room. Having a sofa set with the same colour not only loses its appeal, making them blend and fade easily into the background but gives it a dull appearance. Get hold of the colour scheme and choose colours for your sofa that will complement each other. Or if you wish to keep the colours the same, you can add some variety by introducing patterns and prints into the room by keeping a vibrant ottoman or a coloured chair beside the sofas.
4) Visible AC pipes
Just like water purifiers, an air conditioner comes with a bunch of pipes that run along the walls to assist in its functioning. While it is an essential component, keeping them inside the house ruins the overall look of the room, not to mention, that the holes drilled to fit the pipes can sometimes attract ants and other insects as well.
To avoid this, you can either paint the pies to match the wall or use some decorative pipe covers to make them look beautiful. You can also measure the length of the pipes along the wall and construct and wooden shelf around them which can then be used to store items, decorate with small potted plants etc.
Keep these 4 things in mind while decorating your home to make it look like a paradise.
Are people still spending money on home improvements despite rising housing costs and inflation? According to Opendoor’s 2024 Home Decor Report, the answer is yes. In fact, the average American will spend $5,635 on home remodeling projects this year.
We reviewed Opendoor’s data and spoke with a design expert to get insights on this year’s home decor and renovation trends. When it comes to how homebuyers (and renters) are prioritizing their spending, we learned that paint makes a difference, kitchens renovations are top of the to-do list, and new or repurposed decor can liven up a space. Beyond that, here are some of the most popular home upgrades American homeowners want to try ASAP.
About the Survey
Opendoor surveyed 1,041 homeowners ages 25-74 who have decorated or remodeled in the past two years or have shown interest in doing so.
Popular Home Renovations
When asked about their top-priority remodeling project, 33 percent of respondents said painting, and another 27 percent said the kitchen. Here are some other important upgrades Americans want to make in their homes.
Updating Light Fixtures
For a relatively easy home renovation that may or may not require a handyman, 25 percent of homeowners want to update light fixtures before anything else. The scale and design of overhead lighting can make a significant impact on the look and feel of a space.
Installing New Flooring
Updating floors is the most important home renovation for 24 percent of homeowners. While the cost and labor can be significant, a fresh wood floor or carpet can make a space feel brand new. However, if the scale of this project is too much for the moment, consider a new area rug or a different paint color to offset dated flooring.
Upgrading Kitchen Cabinets
Of all the kitchen renovation projects, 22 percent of homeowners say they want to (or have already) installed new kitchen cabinets. Trendy kitchen cabinet styles come and go, but for longevity, consider a style that coordinates with your home style. For example, shaker-style cabinets look great in older Craftsman homes, while slab-style cabinets work well in homes from the mid-century. If new cabinets aren’t in the budget, consider repainting them to give them a fresh, new look.
Replacing Kitchen Counters
Kitchen counters are the most important project for another 22 percent of homeowners. It’s an upgrade you can do on its own or with a full-scale kitchen renovation. While granite and quartz are popular among homeowners, home design expert Dabito prefers marble. “I think Calacatta marble is making a big splash in the kitchen. It has a lot of bold, unique veins that can add movement and texture in a kitchen space,” he says.
Dabito is an interior designer, color expert, and creative director at Old Brand New.
Affordable Projects
Not all home renovation projects need to break the bank. In some cases, they don’t even involve demolishing a space. Here’s how homeowners plan to save money when updating their homes.
Painting a Room
Painting a room was the highest priority home renovation listed in the survey, but it was also chosen as the most affordable. According to Opendoor’s 2024 Home Decor Report, the top home colors are (in order of popularity):
Off-white
Light gray
Beige
So we can expect these to show up quite a bit in renovation projects next year. “These colors can provide a sense of calm for those living in (and visiting) a home. Traditional neutrals offer a blank slate for home shoppers to easily envision their style,” Dabito says.
“That said, I’m big on color, so I anticipate that the ‘new’ neutrals will be muted tones that are grounded and offer stability—think light blue, light green, dusty rose, and eggshell yellow,” he explains. Dabito also suggests that many paint color brands’ 2024 Colors of the Year are in line with that assumption, with many choosing subdued blues and greens as emerging shades. “These colors can add warmth to a space without overwhelming the senses,” he says.
Buying Seasonal Decor
Updating your seasonal decor is the most affordable to update your home, according to 55 percent of homeowners. But does this count as a home renovation? Sure, if you consider that a renovation can include any project that improves a home, whether that be cosmetic, structural, or a decor change that improves the visual appeal of a space. (Think of how effective home staging is when you sell your home.) Try swapping out fabrics throughout your home from cotton and linen in the warmer months to velvet and wool in the winter.
Changing Furniture
Some house projects won’t require spending at all. Changing the layout of your furniture was chosen as the best wallet-friendly update by 49 percent of homeowners. And Dabito is a fan of using what you have to make a big change.
“Changing furniture is a great way to make a space feel new—without having to change a home’s structure or layout,” he says. “One of my favorite tips is to use furniture as a divider. Try moving your sofa, so it becomes the separator between a living area and the kitchen, for instance. Or, you can have your furniture float in the middle of the room rather than against a wall.”
Dabito
Flow in any space is important, so reimagine your bedroom or living room in a new layout that might offer a better flow. I also love round coffee tables for smaller living spaces because they’re more inviting.
—Dabito
Eco-Friendly Upgrades
Sustainable projects can save money, so these home renovation trends are excellent for your wallet and the earth. Here’s how homeowners take care of their environment while upgrading their homes.
Refinishing Existing Materials
Just because your furniture and decor seem dated doesn’t mean you need to toss it. Homeowners agree that refinishing existing materials is a conscious way to update your home without adding to the landfill.
“One of my favorite ways to refinish existing materials is to let the natural beauty of an existing piece shine through, says Dabito. “Peel-and-stick tiles are fantastic for any outdated tilework in a kitchen without having to commit to a full-on renovation.”
Investing in Dimmers
Installing dimmers is a relatively easy DIY project that improves energy savings. Also, dimmers can enhance your quality of life by providing a range of brightness throughout the day. Just remember to turn the lights off completely when you leave the room for maximum energy conservation.
Refinishing Old Furniture
Just like refinishing materials in your home, you can also give your old furniture an upgrade. Staining or painting wood furniture is a beginner-friendly project and will make use of materials that would have otherwise been tossed.
“Staining a wood furnishing like a side table or cabinet is a great way to make its natural qualities stand out while making it feel new. On the flip side, I also love reimagining an old piece with a fresh coat of paint,” Dabito says.
In AD PRO’s monthly Having a Moment column, AD senior design editor Hannah Martin reports as a weathervane for fads big and small, documenting the patterns and home decor trends she’s clocked in the pages of AD and beyond. Here, enjoy a look back at 2023’s most defining moments.
From nostalgic styles making a comeback to innovative responses to how we live today, there were many stand-out moments in the world of interior design this year. Reviewing them retrospectively, the selections sum up the past year’s tentpole memories—from the design fair debuts we’re still thinking about to the interiors that will inspire well into the new year. Before diving into the design forecasts and color predictions for 2024, take a minute to reflect on the home decor trends that ruled interiors this year.
Forget the subtlety of travertine (last year’s surface du jour) or the always-in elegance of snow-white Carrara. This year was all about an eye-popping specimen—strong veining, unusual colors, and (for the ultra-daring) perhaps a graphic mix of both. Surfaces need not blend into the background; they can say something too. Let’s call it personality marble—that essential dose of pattern that can make any interior pop. Take, for instance, the freestanding onyx bar Roman and Williams turned into a showstopping moment in Gwyneth Paltrow’s Montecito living room, or the all-over marble bathroom of Tinder founder Sean Rad and his wife, Lizzie Grover Rad, conjured by designer Jane Hallworth. Consider it a new kind of conversation piece for the home.

“With a rise in midcentury-modern home remodels and an increased nostalgia for retro furnishings, we’re seeing more customers favoring color,” says Alyssa Wilterdink, senior marketing manager at Kohler, which relaunched a duo of vintage hues for its plumbing fixtures in honor of the American manufacturer’s 150th anniversary this year. Designers are indeed leaning in: Virginia Tupker recently ordered custom colored Water Monopoly sinks in pale pink and blue for a family home in Connecticut; color fiend Frances Merrill installed a cobalt blue sink in the powder room of a Cape Ann, Massachusetts, home; and designer Oliver M. Furth opted for a vintage pink toilet from Kohler for artist Mary Wetherford’s midcentury-modern abode in LA.

This year, we witnessed a surge in designers adding color, pattern, and artistic flair to their projects with hand-painted tile. “I’ll tile just about anything,” says interior designer Jessica Jubelirer, who applied the treatment to the hearth, the bathrooms, the baseboards, and, most memorably, inset in the closet doors in a lakeside Wisconsin family home. Meanwhile, in a historic Connecticut family home designed by Virginia Tupker, Delft and Portuguese tiles create a sort of wainscoting in the entryway and bathrooms, as well as fireplace surrounds. In the kitchen of that project, hand-painted tile adds a splash of pattern (drawn from a William Morris motif) as a backsplash. Practical and durable with an artisan flair, hand-painted tile adds visual interest wherever needed. Adds Jubilerer: “Kitchens, bathrooms, and fireplaces can all benefit from its practicality and beauty.”

This spring’s design fair circuit hinted at a return to the industrial minimalism, high-tech style of the ’70s and ’80s—an industrial revolution of the interior, if you will. In April we returned from Milan with notes about a minimalism resurgence, with a particular emphasis on industrial materials. Knoll had reissued some of high-tech star Joe D’Urso’s super-adaptable and sleek low tables from the ’80s. Ledongil Workshop’s experimental lighting and furnishings, on display at Ordet gallery, felt like an elevated take on track lighting. And at Drop City, designer Daisuke Yamamoto showcased a collection of clean-lined chairs made of the most frequently trashed construction material: lightweight gauge steel. Indeed, industrial materials and minimalist silhouettes were the protagonists of this year’s debuts.

“We’re blowing the dust off moire,” says Raffaele Fabrizio, creative director of Dedar, while showing off the Italian fabric house’s newly expanded Amoir Libre textile. Cue the ripple effect. As of late, a handful of brands and interior designers have redirected their gaze to the historic textile that oozes opulence, repackaging it for today’s quiet luxury. Interior designer Sophie Ashby, who recently wrapped a dressing room in a pale pink Dedar moire, praises the home decor trend for its ability to expand space: “When used in the right way it can really enhance a space, enveloping the interior with tactility whilst also subtly playing with light to make smaller spaces—such as dressing rooms or hidden nooks—appear larger.”

Before there was photography, botanists—or anyone wishing to document flora—created detailed illustrations, known as botanical studies, intended to convey the plant’s physical appearance and other qualities. Unsurprisingly, such botanical studies have long been used to decorate. Lately, the botanical studies trend—a longtime hallmark of traditional, even preppy interiors—is blooming anew. In Lauren Dupont’s Connecticut home, designed by Stephen Sills, a pair of antique botanical prints purchased at auction hang in her dressing room, and in her Palm Beach kitchen, Aerin Lauder mounted a grid of floral prints in the service pantry. Sure, there’s nothing innately groundbreaking about florals when it comes to home decor trends, but perhaps that’s just what gives them eternal life.

In the bedroom, gone are the piles of decorative pillows and fussy, overstuffed duvets. Back is a simple coverlet that is perfectly happy not to take center stage. You know this super-simple look: a flat coverlet is laid across the bed, folded down a little at the top, and then back over a pair of standard pillows. “It always felt a bit traditional and almost religious,” says Colin King, the stylist and longtime AD contributor, who favors the minimalist bed. “It’s clean and tidy, simple but elegant. It gives the room the feeling you want your bedroom to have—serenity.” The back-to-basics look has been spotted in a restored Brooklyn Heights apartment by Augusta Hoffman, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s California bedroom designed by Jake Arnold, and Andre Mellone’s Manhattan sleeping quarters too.

In Germany and Austria between 1815 and 1850, when the Napoleonic wars had ended and a burgeoning middle class emerged, a new style of furniture was created to suit their needs: streamlined versions of more opulent Empire furniture, characterized by strong lines, warm local woods, and simplified shapes—though, notably, not totally stripped of ornament. Biedermeier furniture, as it would later be named, has regained appeal in contemporary interiors for its chameleon qualities. It brings a calculated hit of classicism to a cool, minimalist interior, but it can deliver streamlined modernity to one that is layered and super decorated. These days, says Campbell-Rey’s Charlotte Rey, it’s all about the mix: “It is important to not be afraid to mix them with color and other periods. Perhaps you place a Memphis Milano lamp on top of a Biedermeier sideboard? Being too respectful can make it feel overly polite.”
