The South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas, starts this weekend. The annual festival of panels, film screenings, parties and exhibitions across technology, film, media, education, comedy and music runs March 8-16.
According to organizers, over 340,000 people visited the festival in 2023. If you’re planning to attend SXSW in Austin this year, here’s what you need to know to get around efficiently and affordably.
What to expect at SXSW
SXSW has some events reserved for attendees and others are free for anyone to attend. The festival doesn’t have a single venue; all sessions and events (official and unofficial) are located in or around downtown Austin, with most of the larger tech-focused sessions at the Convention Center.
Due to its central location, walking is one of the easiest ways to get between sessions, shows, restaurants, coffee shops and Lady Bird Lake trails.
Heavy traffic and road closures can make navigating SXSW by car — and finding parking — challenging. Austin’s public transportation or the free SXSW shuttle route can help visitors avoid the hassle of driving.
Getting from the airport to downtown Austin
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is 7 miles from downtown Austin, offering SXSW attendees numerous options to get to downtown Austin and most hotels.
Rental car
For longer stays before or after SXSW, a rental car is a good option for exploring more of central Texas. The Austin airport hosts most major rental car companies on site, but Enterprise is an official partner of SXSW, so it offers deals for festival registrants.
Rideshare and taxis
If you’re not renting a car, you can use rideshare services or traditional cab companies to get to the airport. The Austin airport has a designated rideshare and taxi pickup zone across from the terminal, behind the Red Garage.
SXSW attendees can also use a special link to get a discounted shared ride from Carter Transportation Austin, which is part of the SuperShuttle network.
Bus
The MetroAirport Flyer is a convenient public transportation option to get to and from the Austin airport. Austin’s CapMetro Route 20 can get you from AUS to downtown in about 35 minutes. Buses run every 15 minutes from the neon guitar-shaped bus stop and cost $1.25 per ride or $2.50 for a day pass.
SXSW Austin transportation options
From downtown Austin, SXSW attendees without a rental car have plenty of alternate transportation options to venues.
SXSW shuttle
Attendees have access to a free SXSW shuttle service to get from the Convention Center to most venues. The shuttle departs from Trinity Street and runs from 9 a.m. to 2 or 2:30 a.m. most nights.
CapMetro bus and rail
Public transportation is another convenient and affordable option for Austin visitors.
As far as bus routes, CapMetro Rapid routes 801 and 803 will operate with high frequency for the duration of SXSW. Night Owl Routes will run regular service from midnight to 3 a.m. as well to help shuttle people from late-night events. A CapMetro Bus fare is $1.25 for a single ride, $2.50 for a day pass or $11.25 for a seven-day pass.
The CapMetro rail runs to and from downtown Austin, with a stop near the Austin Convention Center on East 4th Street. Rail service during SXSW will run extended hours daily until midnight. On Fridays and Saturdays, rail service will be extended to 2:30 a.m. The cost is $3.50 for a single ride, $7 for a day pass or $27.50 for a seven-day pass.
Rideshare and taxis
Uber, Lyft and taxis offer door-to-door convenience during SXSW. However, anticipate longer wait times and surge pricing throughout the week. If you want to book a taxi, zTrip Austin or ATX Co-op Taxi operate in the city.

Pedicabs

Bikes and electric scooters
Austin’s MetroBike bike-share program is a popular way to get around as well. According to the City of Austin Transportation and Public Works Department, there are currently more than 80 stations and 800 bicycles. About 43% of the bikes are electric, which makes pedaling even easier. There’s a pay-as-you-ride option, as well as a $13 Explorer day pass and a $20 three-day Weekender pass.
Electric scooter use also spikes during SXSW. Ride Report, a company that tracks mobility, reported 14,000 scooter rides in a single day during SXSW last year. The average number of rides per day in the first quarter of 2023 was 6,800.
Austin visitors can use Bird, Lime or Link to rent electric scooters on a pay-as-you-ride basis.

Home equity loans
Home improvement loans and home equity loans are in two different categories for a number of reasons. For one, home equity loans are secured — backed by the home — and allow you to tap into the equity you’ve built up in your home over time.
Also called a ‘second mortgage,’ these loans and lines of credit tend to have stricter usage restrictions and are higher risk. If you fail to make the payments, you run the risk of losing your home. Home equity loans and lines of credit (HELOCs) are a few of the most popular secured debts and qualify for tax deductions.
Home loans that are tax deductible
As a rule of thumb, if your home or property doesn’t back the loan, it doesn’t qualify for the tax interest deduction. However, if you’re looking to finance a specific renovation, consider a home equity loan or line of credit.
Home equity loans
A home equity loan allows you to borrow against the equity — the portion of the home you’ve already paid off — built up in your home. They typically have fixed interest rates and repayment terms of up to 30 years, but most lenders allow the borrower to choose a repayment plan.
How much you can borrow will depend on the lender and how much equity you’ve built up over time. However, many lenders cap the amount you can borrow between 80 to 85 percent of your home’s equity.
If used for projects to substantially improve your home, you may be able to deduct the interest from your loan on your taxes, even if only a portion of the balance went toward the home.
Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOCs)
HELOCs also allow you to borrow against the equity you’ve built up over time, but rather than dispersing the amount in a lump sum, a HELOC allows you to withdraw funds over time.
Borrowers can take out how much they need when they need it. The interest is eligible for a tax credit when used for eligible projects. Because of this, HELOCs can be a great way to finance an ongoing home improvement project.
Deduction-eligible home equity loan uses
Not all home improvement projects qualify for a tax deduction, even if you use a home equity loan for financing. It’s not likely that you’ll see any interest deducted for smaller projects, like updating your kitchen cabinets or installing a patio.
The IRS has specific parameters around what qualifies as eligible. Check the specific home improvement details and deadlines before banking on a significant return this tax season.
Home office deductions
If your residence is your primary workspace, you may be able to deduct certain home office improvements or purchases. This applies to homeowners and renters residing in any home or utilizing a free-standing structure for their business. Employees will not qualify, even if they meet the other requirements.
The term “home office” is more of an umbrella term as personal property also may qualify. Among others, Boats, RVs, mobile homes and unattached garages, studios or barns fall under this category if used strictly for business.
In order to qualify, the IRS states that:
- You must use a specific part of your home strictly for business purposes.
- Your home (or structure) is your principal place of business, or if administrative tasks can only be performed on your property.
If you work on a hybrid schedule and only work from home a few times a week, it likely won’t qualify. “If the use of the home office is merely appropriate and helpful, you cannot deduct expenses for the business use of your home,” an IRS resource page reads.
Medical-related home renovations
The installation of specialized household equipment for medical care to support you, your spouse or your dependent may qualify for a tax break, but only if the additions fall within certain parameters.
For example, the value of the property must not be increased by the renovation for the entire cost to be considered a taxable medical expense. Such improvements may include:
- Widening hallways and doorways.
- Adding ramps or lifts to accommodate for a wheelchair.
- Modifying stairwells.
- Lowering (or modifying) kitchen appliances, cabinets or household electrical outlets.
Any amount paid (or borrowed) for medical upkeep and operation also qualifies as long as the funds are used strictly for medical purposes and the installation of a specialized plumbing system for a person with a disability.
If you’re unsure whether your renovations qualify, consider the primary function of the addition and the potential value-add it gives your home. “Only reasonable costs to accommodate a home to your disabled condition are considered medical care,” the IRS tax resource reads. “Additional costs for personal motives, such as for architectural or aesthetic reasons, aren’t medical expenses.”
Energy efficient installations
If you’ve installed energy efficient equipment — think solar panels, energy efficient windows, skylights and doors, biomass equipment or small wind turbines — then you may qualify for a tax break on your next return.
Also called the residential clean energy property credit, qualifying eco-friendly renovations made after Dec. 31, 2021, and before Jan. 1, 2033, are eligible for a tax credit totaling up to 30 percent of the equipment costs. Any expenditure made in 2033 can result in a 26 percent maximum tax credit and a 22 percent maximum credit for property placed in 2034. There will be no credit available for renovations made Dec. 31, 2034.
What constitutes a qualifying cost when calculating the deduction percentage will vary based on the type of eco-friendly equipment you’ve had installed. There’s also a $1,200 aggregate yearly tax credit maximum for home components, energy audits and energy property, while qualifying heaters, stoves and boilers have a separate $2,000 limit.
Which is better: home equity or home improvement loans?
While there isn’t a ‘right’ answer as to which product is better, there are projects that are better suited for certain projects. For example, home improvement loans are best for smaller projects that don’t qualify for tax deductions, especially if you don’t have significant home equity built up.
For larger and longer renovations, HELOCs may be the better option for qualifying borrowers. Home equity loans are well suited for long-term homeowners with less strenuous projects that qualify for tax credits.

Are people still spending money on home improvements despite rising housing costs and inflation? According to Opendoor’s 2024 Home Decor Report, the answer is yes. In fact, the average American will spend $5,635 on home remodeling projects this year.
We reviewed Opendoor’s data and spoke with a design expert to get insights on this year’s home decor and renovation trends. When it comes to how homebuyers (and renters) are prioritizing their spending, we learned that paint makes a difference, kitchens renovations are top of the to-do list, and new or repurposed decor can liven up a space. Beyond that, here are some of the most popular home upgrades American homeowners want to try ASAP.
About the Survey
Opendoor surveyed 1,041 homeowners ages 25-74 who have decorated or remodeled in the past two years or have shown interest in doing so.
Popular Home Renovations
When asked about their top-priority remodeling project, 33 percent of respondents said painting, and another 27 percent said the kitchen. Here are some other important upgrades Americans want to make in their homes.
Updating Light Fixtures
For a relatively easy home renovation that may or may not require a handyman, 25 percent of homeowners want to update light fixtures before anything else. The scale and design of overhead lighting can make a significant impact on the look and feel of a space.
Installing New Flooring
Updating floors is the most important home renovation for 24 percent of homeowners. While the cost and labor can be significant, a fresh wood floor or carpet can make a space feel brand new. However, if the scale of this project is too much for the moment, consider a new area rug or a different paint color to offset dated flooring.
Upgrading Kitchen Cabinets
Of all the kitchen renovation projects, 22 percent of homeowners say they want to (or have already) installed new kitchen cabinets. Trendy kitchen cabinet styles come and go, but for longevity, consider a style that coordinates with your home style. For example, shaker-style cabinets look great in older Craftsman homes, while slab-style cabinets work well in homes from the mid-century. If new cabinets aren’t in the budget, consider repainting them to give them a fresh, new look.
Replacing Kitchen Counters
Kitchen counters are the most important project for another 22 percent of homeowners. It’s an upgrade you can do on its own or with a full-scale kitchen renovation. While granite and quartz are popular among homeowners, home design expert Dabito prefers marble. “I think Calacatta marble is making a big splash in the kitchen. It has a lot of bold, unique veins that can add movement and texture in a kitchen space,” he says.

Not all home renovation projects need to break the bank. In some cases, they don’t even involve demolishing a space. Here’s how homeowners plan to save money when updating their homes.
Painting a Room
Painting a room was the highest priority home renovation listed in the survey, but it was also chosen as the most affordable. According to Opendoor’s 2024 Home Decor Report, the top home colors are (in order of popularity):
- Off-white
- Light gray
- Beige
So we can expect these to show up quite a bit in renovation projects next year. “These colors can provide a sense of calm for those living in (and visiting) a home. Traditional neutrals offer a blank slate for home shoppers to easily envision their style,” Dabito says.
“That said, I’m big on color, so I anticipate that the ‘new’ neutrals will be muted tones that are grounded and offer stability—think light blue, light green, dusty rose, and eggshell yellow,” he explains. Dabito also suggests that many paint color brands’ 2024 Colors of the Year are in line with that assumption, with many choosing subdued blues and greens as emerging shades. “These colors can add warmth to a space without overwhelming the senses,” he says.
Buying Seasonal Decor
Updating your seasonal decor is the most affordable to update your home, according to 55 percent of homeowners. But does this count as a home renovation? Sure, if you consider that a renovation can include any project that improves a home, whether that be cosmetic, structural, or a decor change that improves the visual appeal of a space. (Think of how effective home staging is when you sell your home.) Try swapping out fabrics throughout your home from cotton and linen in the warmer months to velvet and wool in the winter.
Changing Furniture
Some house projects won’t require spending at all. Changing the layout of your furniture was chosen as the best wallet-friendly update by 49 percent of homeowners. And Dabito is a fan of using what you have to make a big change.
“Changing furniture is a great way to make a space feel new—without having to change a home’s structure or layout,” he says. “One of my favorite tips is to use furniture as a divider. Try moving your sofa, so it becomes the separator between a living area and the kitchen, for instance. Or, you can have your furniture float in the middle of the room rather than against a wall.”

“One of my favorite ways to refinish existing materials is to let the natural beauty of an existing piece shine through, says Dabito. “Peel-and-stick tiles are fantastic for any outdated tilework in a kitchen without having to commit to a full-on renovation.”

Installing dimmers is a relatively easy DIY project that improves energy savings. Also, dimmers can enhance your quality of life by providing a range of brightness throughout the day. Just remember to turn the lights off completely when you leave the room for maximum energy conservation.

“Staining a wood furnishing like a side table or cabinet is a great way to make its natural qualities stand out while making it feel new. On the flip side, I also love reimagining an old piece with a fresh coat of paint,” Dabito says.

Investments are being made in the kitchen this year, especially when it comes to updating appliances. According to Opendoor’s report, updated kitchen appliances may potentially help with resale value when and if homeowners decide to sell their homes.
When deciding which appliances to replace, Stephanie Duncan, senior home designer at Opendoor, recommends opting for sleek, stainless-steel appliances. These appliances, like a new refrigerator and stove, should inspire potential buyers to imagine life in that kitchen — and encourage them to make an offer right away.
As an additional shopping pro tip, Duncan said you don’t need to buy the most expensive appliances on the market.
“While it is important to have updated appliances, it is not necessary to buy the top-of-the-line options. Not overspending on the most luxe brands will ensure people see a return on their investment,” said Duncan.

The good news for buyers is that it’s cost-effective to shift cabinet finish from paint to stain. According to Hampton, homeowners who choose stain over paint can save $3,000 to $5,000 on their project.

Upgraded Kitchen Cabinet Hardware
The spotlight is on kitchen cabinets and cupboards this year.
Buyers trying to avoid overspending on their kitchen renovations are recommended by Duncan to upgrade knobs and handles on their cabinets or cupboards. Switching the hardware out is an effective way to upgrade these spaces without needing to buy new pieces.
Storage as a Decorative Element
Buyers this year are getting inspired by organization-themed TV shows, Instagram Reels and TikTok when it comes to kitchen storage for specific purposes.
Amber Shay, national VP of design studios at Meritage Homes, has seen everyday items, like snacks and supplies, being organized into specific pantry containers. Shay said there’s also storage being used as a decorative element with containers in fun colors and designs to match the décor scheme.
For the full kitchen, Hampton said buyers can expect to spend $3,000 to $6,000 on customizing cabinet interiors. Other options to explore, if you have a big budget to work with, include appliance garages or pantries with pullout shelves.
Those on a budget can still customize their cabinet interiors. “Homeowners should budget $150 to $1,200 for each cabinet to add options such as drawer pullouts, appliance lifts or converting a cabinet with doors to drawers,” Hampton recommended.

The primary bathroom is getting a makeover as a relaxing retreat inside homes.
Buyers seeking to create a luxurious, spa-like atmosphere in their bathrooms are recommended by Shay to explore the following investments:

“Also, consider investing in a high-quality area rug that’s designed to look like a priceless heirloom — it can set the tone for the entire space,” she added.

Eco-Friendly Laundry Room Solutions
More homeowners are prioritizing eco-friendly solutions in their laundry rooms.
Hampton uses the example of homeowners choosing to air-dry clothes instead of putting them into the dryer. This choice is both environmentally friendly and causes less damage to garments.
“Laundries may include pullout drying racks that are hidden in the cabinets to maintain the aesthetic,” said Hampton. “Popular systems with installation cost around $1,500.”
Interior Painting Is the Second Remodeling Priority
According to Opendoor’s survey results, kitchens are the number-one remodel priority for homeowners with the number two slot going to interior painting. (New lighting fixtures and new floors take the third and fourth priority spots, respectively.)
As far as which colors are popular with buyers, Duncan said subdued greens and blues are emerging to the forefront. Both shades offer grounding and stability to homeowners.
Shay also agrees with Duncan’s color assessment, adding in her color recommendations of sea blue and darker, moody blues for interior painting.
Buyers who choose sea blue will be able to complement any marble and other natural stones in a space or use it as a fun accent while a moody blue is ideal for a sophisticated and dramatic space. If you dare create a bolder look in your home, Shay said to use dark blue as an interior wall or ceiling color or for painted cabinets and furniture.
