Just one peek into her home on Providence’s West End tells you everything you need to know about the cheerful force behind Pernilla Interiors: Bold, bright hues abound and Scandinavian patterns pop up in vibrant window treatments, art, lampshades and wallpaper selections.
The circa 1904 home is sunny and cozy, lively yet tranquil at the same time. But perhaps her friend, Harry Adler of Adler’s Design Center & Hardware, describes her style best.
“He said, ‘Well, I can’t necessarily find a common thread in your style when you do work for other people, but it always looks happy,’” she says.
So who better to turn to during these dark February days for some ways to bring color, light and a touch of Nordic coziness into our lives? The Swedish native, who cofounded Kreatelier with Line Daems in 2007 before leaving to start her own interior design business, was more than happy to oblige.
Go Bold
Bergquist loves to push clients out of their comfort zones and play with color.
“There is so much fear of color,” she says. “I’m amazed at how many people chicken out and decide, ‘Let’s just do beige and gold.’”

If that sounds familiar, Bergquist suggests starting small.
Choose one or two colorful pillows, and maybe some fun lampshades, too. It’s easier than reupholstering, say, an entire sofa, and then you can swap out the pillows whenever you like.
Or maybe play around with a small area and see what happens. Bergquist transformed her once-cramped office into a jewel box of a cozy TV room, with moody teal paint and botanical-themed Marimekko wallpaper to match, along with colorful pieces by local artists Kirstin Lamb and Jens Retlev. Vibrant pillows and a blanket crocheted by her sister in Sweden complete the look.

You can even bring bold hues into one of the most unlikely places in the home: the kitchen.
Bergquist redid her kitchen last year, painting the Ikea cabinets white, adding new hardware and uncovering a window to turn the once dark room into something bright and cheerful. Glossy brick-red Moroccan tiles — leftover from another project — make quite the dramatic backsplash.
“I love the uneven glaze and edges,” she says.

Bring in the Light — and the Outdoors

Swedish winters are notorious for being snowy, cold and dark. A typical January day in Stockholm will see the sun rise at 8:30 a.m. and set around 3:30 p.m. So Swedes use lots of little lamps and candles to compensate for the extra darkness.
“I’m obsessed with real candles,” Bergquist says. “I go through a lot of Ikea [candle] boxes. It creates the best dinner ambiance.”
Adding flowers and potted plants works wonders, too. Forcing bulbs early for indoor use is another Swedish trick; Bergquist loves to have hyacinths around Christmas and tulips at other times to introduce hints of spring around her home.
Get Cozy
Another winter staple you’ll find in Swedish homes is sheepskin.
“It’s a great thing to just put on anything and make it look cozy,” she says.
Comfy throws, blankets and quilts look equally chic when draped over a couch or bed and provide much-needed warmth during the chilly winter months. Bergquist is an avid quilter and has piles of her handiwork neatly arranged at the foot of her bed, with a sheepskin throw artfully nestled on a rocking chair that once belonged to her grandmother.

Curate Those Collections
Books, pottery, dinnerware: They all provide pops of color when smartly arranged.
Bergquist tucks rows of books into living room shelves and her nightstand table for entertainment just within reach. Colorful groupings of Swedish Dala horses circle the living room, and delicate Danish pottery enhances the dining room with gentle hints of cornflower blue. She bought her first Bjorn Wiinblad piece at eighteen, and has been collecting ever since.
There’s an art to arranging collections, however. Place them haphazardly around the room and the effect can look cluttered. But display them closely together and they’re transformed into art.

If All Else Fails, Embrace the Darkness

Sometimes you just have to work with what you’re given.
Embrace the long, dark nights by hosting a board game night with friends, some wine and a charcuterie board or two. Or invite folks over for a movie night with hot cocoa and popcorn. Every Tuesday, Bergquist hosts a “puzzle and guzzle” night with friends: They work on a small puzzle, enjoy some wine and just laugh and chat the whole time.
“It doesn’t take that much effort,” she says. “In February, everyone has to survive in Sweden. It’s so dark. But you just make the best out of it. And then you embrace the summer and it’s fantastic.”
Million-dollar homes are the perfect blend of form and function, setting the stage for true elegance and luxury.

You can see this in the prohibitively expensive homes from shows like Selling Sunset and Million Dollar Listing. Those million-dollar homes focus on hiding conventional features and appliances, allowing the eyes to revel in the design without distraction.

Luxury design hinges on the power of illusion – making the essential elements of a home feel like an integrated, almost indistinguishable part of the overall design.
This invisible functionality transforms living spaces into masterpieces of high-end hospitality and cozy elegance, where every detail is meticulously crafted to elevate the experience of luxury living.
Blend kitchen appliances with the design
Looking at luxury homes and apartments, you won’t find their microwave, stove, or refrigerator glaring out like sore thumbs in the kitchen.
One of the best examples we’ve seen of this is in actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s house in Encino, a newly built contemporary house in Los Angeles with impeccable interiors.
The impressive property’s most distinctive interior traits are the warm wood tones used throughout, which serve as both décor elements and provide tons of storage space — particularly in the kitchen, which is clad in cabinets and wood paneling made out of hemlock wood.
The refrigerator is an essential appliance in any home but as we can see in the Modern Family star’s home, it is artfully hidden within the cabinetry.
It perfectly matches the surrounding cabinets, giving a unified and uninterrupted visual flow that exudes sophistication.
Similarly, the microwave is tucked away, out of the direct line of sight, allowing guests to focus on the elegant lines and luxurious finishes of the kitchen without the distraction of appliances.
Strategically concealing appliances amplifies the spaciousness and clean lines that are synonymous with luxury, making the kitchen not just a place for meal preparation but a statement of design excellence.
That’s not because the owners don’t own any and eat out for every meal but because their appliances are expertly designed to be hidden away when they are not needed.
Luxury designs do not break the viewer’s experience of ah and wonderment with the typical microwave or fridge sticking out.
Hide air vents in plain sight with frameless diffusers
When it comes to the interiors of the most coveted million-dollar listings, the devil is in the details—or perhaps, it’s the lack thereof. The luxurious spaces you see have a secret: the art of concealment.
This is particularly true when it comes to the mechanics of comfort, like HVAC air diffusers, which are essential yet often an eyesore.
But not in these homes. Here, they’re incorporated with such finesse that they’re almost invisible, represented by the hardly visible lines blending into the ceilings and walls as seen in the image below.
These aren’t your standard vents; they’re design statements in their own right, albeit in the most understated way.

So, if you are wondering how to go about decorating your home, interior designer Sonika Khurana Sethi, founder of Coloraza Design Studio shares 4 things homeowners should avoid while making their home.
1) Mounting water purifiers on the wall
For those who already have purifiers installed on the wall, you can admit that the setup looks a bit messy, especially the pipes that run along the purifier and cover the walls, giving it an untidy look. Not to forget, the gradual dampening of the walls or the salt deposits on the counter and fungus on the pipes from the dripping water droplets further ruin the material and look of the overall kitchen.
To avoid this mistake, get your water purifiers installed inside the cabinet beneath the kitchen sink which will not only make space to install a tap on the countertop to fill water but also keep the pipes hidden to beautify the space. You can also choose to fit a modern purifier on the upper cabinets to make it easier to drink and fill water into the bottles.
2) Installing tube lights in the room
Gone are the days when tube lights used to brighten almost every home in India. While they serve an important purpose, replacing them with modern methods, such as ambient and accented lighting can greatly change the outlook of your home. Install ceiling lighting, gorgeous lamp fixtures or decor items with tinted lighting available in different shapes and sizes to make your home look modern and chic.
3) Keeping matching sofa sets
Matching sofa sets have adorned our homes for a long time, but now is the time to cast them aside and introduce sofas with contrasting palettes to add more colour to your living room. Having a sofa set with the same colour not only loses its appeal, making them blend and fade easily into the background but gives it a dull appearance. Get hold of the colour scheme and choose colours for your sofa that will complement each other. Or if you wish to keep the colours the same, you can add some variety by introducing patterns and prints into the room by keeping a vibrant ottoman or a coloured chair beside the sofas.
4) Visible AC pipes
Just like water purifiers, an air conditioner comes with a bunch of pipes that run along the walls to assist in its functioning. While it is an essential component, keeping them inside the house ruins the overall look of the room, not to mention, that the holes drilled to fit the pipes can sometimes attract ants and other insects as well.
To avoid this, you can either paint the pies to match the wall or use some decorative pipe covers to make them look beautiful. You can also measure the length of the pipes along the wall and construct and wooden shelf around them which can then be used to store items, decorate with small potted plants etc.

Are people still spending money on home improvements despite rising housing costs and inflation? According to Opendoor’s 2024 Home Decor Report, the answer is yes. In fact, the average American will spend $5,635 on home remodeling projects this year.
We reviewed Opendoor’s data and spoke with a design expert to get insights on this year’s home decor and renovation trends. When it comes to how homebuyers (and renters) are prioritizing their spending, we learned that paint makes a difference, kitchens renovations are top of the to-do list, and new or repurposed decor can liven up a space. Beyond that, here are some of the most popular home upgrades American homeowners want to try ASAP.
About the Survey
Opendoor surveyed 1,041 homeowners ages 25-74 who have decorated or remodeled in the past two years or have shown interest in doing so.
Popular Home Renovations
When asked about their top-priority remodeling project, 33 percent of respondents said painting, and another 27 percent said the kitchen. Here are some other important upgrades Americans want to make in their homes.
Updating Light Fixtures
For a relatively easy home renovation that may or may not require a handyman, 25 percent of homeowners want to update light fixtures before anything else. The scale and design of overhead lighting can make a significant impact on the look and feel of a space.
Installing New Flooring
Updating floors is the most important home renovation for 24 percent of homeowners. While the cost and labor can be significant, a fresh wood floor or carpet can make a space feel brand new. However, if the scale of this project is too much for the moment, consider a new area rug or a different paint color to offset dated flooring.
Upgrading Kitchen Cabinets
Of all the kitchen renovation projects, 22 percent of homeowners say they want to (or have already) installed new kitchen cabinets. Trendy kitchen cabinet styles come and go, but for longevity, consider a style that coordinates with your home style. For example, shaker-style cabinets look great in older Craftsman homes, while slab-style cabinets work well in homes from the mid-century. If new cabinets aren’t in the budget, consider repainting them to give them a fresh, new look.
Replacing Kitchen Counters
Kitchen counters are the most important project for another 22 percent of homeowners. It’s an upgrade you can do on its own or with a full-scale kitchen renovation. While granite and quartz are popular among homeowners, home design expert Dabito prefers marble. “I think Calacatta marble is making a big splash in the kitchen. It has a lot of bold, unique veins that can add movement and texture in a kitchen space,” he says.

Affordable Projects
Not all home renovation projects need to break the bank. In some cases, they don’t even involve demolishing a space. Here’s how homeowners plan to save money when updating their homes.
Painting a Room
Painting a room was the highest priority home renovation listed in the survey, but it was also chosen as the most affordable. According to Opendoor’s 2024 Home Decor Report, the top home colors are (in order of popularity):
Off-white
Light gray
Beige
So we can expect these to show up quite a bit in renovation projects next year. “These colors can provide a sense of calm for those living in (and visiting) a home. Traditional neutrals offer a blank slate for home shoppers to easily envision their style,” Dabito says.
“That said, I’m big on color, so I anticipate that the ‘new’ neutrals will be muted tones that are grounded and offer stability—think light blue, light green, dusty rose, and eggshell yellow,” he explains. Dabito also suggests that many paint color brands’ 2024 Colors of the Year are in line with that assumption, with many choosing subdued blues and greens as emerging shades. “These colors can add warmth to a space without overwhelming the senses,” he says.
Buying Seasonal Decor
Updating your seasonal decor is the most affordable to update your home, according to 55 percent of homeowners. But does this count as a home renovation? Sure, if you consider that a renovation can include any project that improves a home, whether that be cosmetic, structural, or a decor change that improves the visual appeal of a space. (Think of how effective home staging is when you sell your home.) Try swapping out fabrics throughout your home from cotton and linen in the warmer months to velvet and wool in the winter.
Changing Furniture
Some house projects won’t require spending at all. Changing the layout of your furniture was chosen as the best wallet-friendly update by 49 percent of homeowners. And Dabito is a fan of using what you have to make a big change.
“Changing furniture is a great way to make a space feel new—without having to change a home’s structure or layout,” he says. “One of my favorite tips is to use furniture as a divider. Try moving your sofa, so it becomes the separator between a living area and the kitchen, for instance. Or, you can have your furniture float in the middle of the room rather than against a wall.”

Flow in any space is important, so reimagine your bedroom or living room in a new layout that might offer a better flow. I also love round coffee tables for smaller living spaces because they’re more inviting.

Eco-Friendly Upgrades
Sustainable projects can save money, so these home renovation trends are excellent for your wallet and the earth. Here’s how homeowners take care of their environment while upgrading their homes.
Refinishing Existing Materials
Just because your furniture and decor seem dated doesn’t mean you need to toss it. Homeowners agree that refinishing existing materials is a conscious way to update your home without adding to the landfill.
“One of my favorite ways to refinish existing materials is to let the natural beauty of an existing piece shine through, says Dabito. “Peel-and-stick tiles are fantastic for any outdated tilework in a kitchen without having to commit to a full-on renovation.”
Investing in Dimmers
Installing dimmers is a relatively easy DIY project that improves energy savings. Also, dimmers can enhance your quality of life by providing a range of brightness throughout the day. Just remember to turn the lights off completely when you leave the room for maximum energy conservation.
Refinishing Old Furniture
Just like refinishing materials in your home, you can also give your old furniture an upgrade. Staining or painting wood furniture is a beginner-friendly project and will make use of materials that would have otherwise been tossed.
“Staining a wood furnishing like a side table or cabinet is a great way to make its natural qualities stand out while making it feel new. On the flip side, I also love reimagining an old piece with a fresh coat of paint,” Dabito says.

After a long year, tax season is finally upon us. You’re probably getting all your ducks in a row—collecting all the information you need, choosing your tax software, and so on. If you’re a homeowner, you might be able to catch a few tax breaks—but can you get a tax break for buying a house?
If you itemize your deductions via Schedule A rather than claiming the standard deduction, you could be eligible for one or more home-related tax breaks. And if you work from home, you might be able to claim a home office deduction (more on that later). The information below is general information regarding these deductions. It is always best to consult a tax professional if you have any questions related to your specific situation.
Deductions vs. Credits
Many people mistake deductions for credits—but they’re not the same thing. Let’s take a closer look at both types of tax breaks.
Deduction
Deductions reduce your taxable income according to the highest federal income tax bracket you fall into. So, if you qualify for a $2,000 deduction, the amount of money you can be taxed on will be reduced by $2,000.
There are two types of deductions: standard and itemized. Standard deductions are specific amounts based on your filing status and are updated annually. Itemized deductions are specific amounts you paid during the taxable year and you should use itemized deductions when your total of allowable itemized deductions is higher than the standard deduction.
Credit
Credits lower your income tax liability by a fixed dollar amount. If you qualify for a $500 tax credit, you pay $500 less in taxes.
Good to know: Some tax credits are nonrefundable, so if you don’t owe a lot of tax to begin with, you don’t qualify for the entire credit. Other tax credits, like the Earned Income Tax Credit, are refundable, so you get the entire amount under any tax circumstances. The remaining amount of credit available that wasn’t needed to pay down your tax bill comes to you in your tax refund.
Nondeductible Home Expenses
Unfortunately, some homeownership expenses just aren’t deductible. These include:
Closing costs (title insurance, appraisals, etc.)
Depreciation
Domestic service
Down payment
Fire insurance
Mortgage insurance premiums
Mortgage principal
Utilities such as gas, electricity, and water
Common Homeownership Deductions
If you itemize your deductions, there are several homeownership deductions available.
Home Mortgage Interest Deduction
Arguably the most well-known tax break for homeowners, the home mortgage interest deduction (HMID) lets you deduct interest paid on your mortgage up to $750,000 (or $375,000 if married filing separately).
If you take out a home equity loan or a home equity line of credit (HELOC) to make home improvements or buy or build a primary or secondary residence, you can deduct the interest through 2025.
You can claim this deduction on Form 1040, Schedule A.
Property Tax Deduction
Do you pay property taxes monthly or yearly? In either case, both state and federal property taxes are tax deductible on your federal return. For tax year 2023, the deduction amount is capped at $10,000 for married couples filing jointly and $5,000 for other tax statuses.
You can also claim taxes paid at closing when you buy or sell your home and certain payments made to town or county tax assessors. However, you can’t claim taxes paid on commercial or rental property.
To claim this deduction, report your total state and local income taxes in box 5a on Schedule A of Form 1040.
Mortgage Points Deductions
A homebuyer can purchase mortgage points, also called discount points, at the time of closing to lower their interest rate. For example, buying one point may lower your interest rate by 0.25%.
You can either deduct these points in the year in which you opened the mortgage or over the mortgage term. There are limitations, which you can view on the IRS website.
You can file for this deduction using Form 1040, Schedule A.
Home Office Deduction
If you’re self-employed and work from home, you can claim a home office deduction. To do so, you have to prove that you’ve used a portion of your home exclusively for business purposes. In other words, your office or another “separately identifiable space” counts, but your bedroom doesn’t—even if you work on your laptop in bed. Voluntary, occasional, or incidental freelance work won’t entitle you to a home office deduction.
There are occasions where you don’t need to meet the exclusive-use test. These include:
If you use part of your home as a day care facility for children, disabled adults, or elderly individuals
If you use part of your home to store physical inventory or product samples
Deductible expenses include:
Refurbishment and repair costs
Depreciation
A portion of your rent or mortgage payment
A portion of your utility bill
Business insurance
Office supplies
You can’t deduct landscaping or lawn care costs unless you’re a gardener or you’re in the lawn care business.
You can also consider using the simplified method for claiming your home office. That allows you to deduct $5 per square foot of your home used for business purposes. Often, this is a much more convenient way to deduct your home office versus taking the time to itemize each of your expenses.
Important: Before 2017, traditional employees could claim unreimbursed employee business expenses that exceeded 2% of their adjusted gross income on their tax return, including home office expenses. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act eliminated that option until at least 2026. So, if you have an employer, you can’t currently write off any unreimbursed expenses related to your home office.
To claim this deduction, you’ll need to complete Form 8829, Expenses for Business Use of Your Home as part of your tax return.
Rental Expenses Deduction
If you rent your home, you can deduct some landlord expenses on your taxes, including operating expenses, depreciation, and repairs.
You can only deduct costs associated with keeping the rental in good operating condition. For example, you could deduct the cost of repairing a full bathroom that flooded, but you couldn’t deduct the cost of renovating a half bath into a full bath.
To claim this deduction, complete Form 4562, Depreciation and Amortization (Including Information on Listed Property).
Medical Capital Expense Deduction
If you have a medical condition that requires you to make improvements to your home or install special equipment, you may be eligible to deduct some or all of their cost.
Common capital expense deductions include:
Constructing ramps to exterior doors to make entering and exiting the home easier
Widening doorways or hallways to allow for wheelchairs or other mobility equipment
Installing railings, support bars, and other bathroom safety modifications
Lowering or modifying cabinets to make them usable
Installing a lift or otherwise modifying stairways
Modifying warning systems, such as fire alarms and smoke detectors
To file this deduction, use Worksheet A Capital Expense Worksheet to determine your medical capital expenses and enter the total on your Schedule A (Form 1040).
Common Homeownership Credits
As a homeowner, you may also qualify for specific homeownership tax credits.
Mortgage Interest Credit
Some lower-income first-time homeowners may receive a Mortgage Credit Certificate (MCC) from their state or local government, subsidizing the purchase of their home up to $2,000 on mortgage interest.
This credit comes with a few stipulations. For example, you’ll have to deduct the total amount of the credit from the mortgage interest you deduct. See the instructions page of Form 8396 for a complete list of stipulations. You’ll need to submit this as part of your tax return to claim the credit.
Residential Clean Energy Credit
Formally the Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit, the Residential Clean Energy Credit has a credit rate of 30% through 2032 and can cover costs related to renovating or building a home that runs on clean energy.
Specific limitations vary based on the type of improvements made, but they can apply to:
Solar electricity
Solar water heating
Small wind energy
Geothermal heat pumps
Biomass fuel
Fuel cells

To claim the credit, complete Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits Part I as part of your tax return.
Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit
If you improve your home’s energy efficiency, you may qualify for the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit.
Qualifying improvements include:

The good news for buyers is that it’s cost-effective to shift cabinet finish from paint to stain. According to Hampton, homeowners who choose stain over paint can save $3,000 to $5,000 on their project.

Upgraded Kitchen Cabinet Hardware
The spotlight is on kitchen cabinets and cupboards this year.
Buyers trying to avoid overspending on their kitchen renovations are recommended by Duncan to upgrade knobs and handles on their cabinets or cupboards. Switching the hardware out is an effective way to upgrade these spaces without needing to buy new pieces.
Storage as a Decorative Element
Buyers this year are getting inspired by organization-themed TV shows, Instagram Reels and TikTok when it comes to kitchen storage for specific purposes.
Amber Shay, national VP of design studios at Meritage Homes, has seen everyday items, like snacks and supplies, being organized into specific pantry containers. Shay said there’s also storage being used as a decorative element with containers in fun colors and designs to match the décor scheme.
For the full kitchen, Hampton said buyers can expect to spend $3,000 to $6,000 on customizing cabinet interiors. Other options to explore, if you have a big budget to work with, include appliance garages or pantries with pullout shelves.
Those on a budget can still customize their cabinet interiors. “Homeowners should budget $150 to $1,200 for each cabinet to add options such as drawer pullouts, appliance lifts or converting a cabinet with doors to drawers,” Hampton recommended.

The primary bathroom is getting a makeover as a relaxing retreat inside homes.
Buyers seeking to create a luxurious, spa-like atmosphere in their bathrooms are recommended by Shay to explore the following investments:
Adding vintage rugs, art and other décor to make the primary bathroom look and feel like a welcoming place of respite. (Opendoor’s survey notes Americans spend an average of $1,599 per year on home décor.)
Embracing matte black. “A matte black faucet seamlessly blends with on-trend iron and aged brass light fixtures in a bathroom,” said Shay.

Buyers don’t need to spend a lot of money to create a stylish living room that they love.
“Think of items like upscale hotel-style bedding, monogrammed towels, cozy throw pillows or a stylish mirror. You can keep your eye out for original art when you’re on the hunt for furniture at thrift stores,” said Shay.
“Also, consider investing in a high-quality area rug that’s designed to look like a priceless heirloom — it can set the tone for the entire space,” she added.

More homeowners are prioritizing eco-friendly solutions in their laundry rooms.
Hampton uses the example of homeowners choosing to air-dry clothes instead of putting them into the dryer. This choice is both environmentally friendly and causes less damage to garments.
“Laundries may include pullout drying racks that are hidden in the cabinets to maintain the aesthetic,” said Hampton. “Popular systems with installation cost around $1,500.”
Interior Painting Is the Second Remodeling Priority
According to Opendoor’s survey results, kitchens are the number-one remodel priority for homeowners with the number two slot going to interior painting. (New lighting fixtures and new floors take the third and fourth priority spots, respectively.)
As far as which colors are popular with buyers, Duncan said subdued greens and blues are emerging to the forefront. Both shades offer grounding and stability to homeowners.
Shay also agrees with Duncan’s color assessment, adding in her color recommendations of sea blue and darker, moody blues for interior painting.
Buyers who choose sea blue will be able to complement any marble and other natural stones in a space or use it as a fun accent while a moody blue is ideal for a sophisticated and dramatic space. If you dare create a bolder look in your home, Shay said to use dark blue as an interior wall or ceiling color or for painted cabinets and furniture.

Trend: Working pantries

More and more, new home builds and renovations are including a spot for a working pantry, which is a larger walk-in version with storage and prep space. “Adding countertops, outlets and space to prep in pantries bring an added layer of function to the home and can help achieve a mess-free kitchen space while entertaining,” says Hayden Dendy, designer for BRNS Design, a multidisciplinary architecture and design firm.

Designer Kara Adam, owner of Kara Adam Interiors, is also urging her clients to consider adding a working pantry to their floor plans. Not only is it practical, but it’s another opportunity to have fun with design. “Pantries are no longer a closet with white shelves,” she says. “They are gorgeous and they’re functional. Design them with pretty countertops, tile and wallpaper, or paint them a fun color. They are truly treated as a room now, not just a closet. This will be budgeted into more and more of my clients’ projects.” She suggests storing appliances that take up space in the kitchen such as coffee makers, blenders and toasters. “They can also be plumbed with a sink or ice machine. Basically all of the things that are noisy or unattractive, so that your kitchen remains a pretty space,” she says.

Trend: Saturated color

“This year we are going to see homeowners being more adventurous with color,” says Danielle Frazier, co-owner and principal designer of interior design studio Twilly & Fig. “When you saw the trends go towards gray and neutrals and cooler tones, people lost that richness and connection to color. They are starting to feel that void and want to be more playful with color.” Within that, Frazier notes that spaces will continue to see monochromatic use of color, particularly with moody hues. She says she’s seeing an increase in purple spaces, as well. “We just did a living room in a grayish plum that is really rich. It’s a color you don’t hear a lot about now, but you’ll start to see it more,” she says. She suggests trying Benjamin Moore’s “Hazy Lilac” as a way to introduce the trending palette. Aside from the walls, Frazier also notes that homeowners are starting to ask for colorful pieces like rugs, sofas and wallpaper as well. “I think people are willing to take a risk with color on more investment pieces than they have in the past,” she says.
Adam agrees that the neutral all-white look is starting to fade. “In 2024, few people are going to ask for that,” she says. “People want a cozier environment rich in color. Even formal spaces are looking less formal because of the rich color. It draws you in and makes a space scream ‘come hang out in here,’” she says.
Trend: Mixing and matching genres

As the neutral palette starts to fade, so does the matchy-matchy interior that looks more like a catalogue than a personalized lived-in space. “Our clients are craving an element in their design and in their homes that have a soulfulness to them,” Frazier says. “For instance, we’ve been designing a kitchen with custom handmade tiles on the backsplash. We’re finding that people are wanting to add depth, character and personality through handmade pieces and antiques.” She suggests shopping estate sales and local antique stores for hidden gems or planning a road trip to one of Round Top’s antique show weeks for one-of-a-kind finds.

“We always encourage and push clients to embrace the unexpected,” adds Adam. “Mixing a contemporary piece with an antique will make an environment that is pleasing to the eye.”She also urges clients to purchase art, which personalizes a home even more. She suggest that her clients buy works that speaks to them, rather than what “matches” their interiors. “Your home is an expression of you,” she says. “Art is very subjective. And, it’s not just decoration anymore. It’s a statement.”
Trend: Bold bars and beverage centers

“Bars are huge right now,” says Adam. “We have some homes with multiple bars. And much like how powder baths are the jewel box of the home, that’s how bars are going to be too. They will be extremely layered, rich in colors and accessories, and usually have unique countertops.” And thanks to the playful powder bath aesthetic that has been trending for some time, homeowners are craving more of that layered look throughout the home, which is where a bold bar comes in. “It used to be that we’d go into these beautiful, airy light homes and they’ve had this wild powder bath, but now you’re seeing that personality throughout the home,” she says.

And on that note, Frazier is seeing an increase in beverage centers, which encompasses every drink throughout the day, from breakfast to cocktail hour. “In the past a beverage center was maybe just a coffee bar or a cocktail bar, but now people want them to be multipurposeful, a place where they can make their morning coffee or tea, make a smoothie bowl after a workout or pour a beverage after work.” Most of these areas include a beverage fridge or fridge drawers, a built-in pullout trash can, a wine fridge, a sink, and cabinets for blenders, coffee pots or tea kettles. “It depends on the person, of course, but they are designed for how they want it to function,” she says.
Trend: Cozy spaces

Homes built in the last decade mostly feature open-concept floor plans, which usually include an open family room, kitchen and breakfast nook. But Adam is hoping to design cozier spaces in the next year. “No one wants to relax in their family room when they are sitting on the sofa and behind them is the kitchen,” she says. Dirty dishes, a pot of soup on the stove or clutter on the countertops does not create for a relaxing space. “Creating separation is good for your mental health,” she says. “You can step away from it and go back and clean it up later.” Plus, when a space is large and open, there is no breaking point for a designer to do something playful and fun on the walls or molding. “When it’s one huge space, it’s a lot harder to upholster or lacquer a wall,” she explains.
Her clients are also asking for game rooms. “We can’t do enough of them,” she says. “We are redoing spaces so that people can have a mahjong room. In our home we have a table built for mahjong, but when it’s not set up for that, we always have a puzzle out, too. Work on a puzzle for 20 minutes and it’s good for your brain and it slows things down. Then you can go back to running around or going to carpool,” she says.
Trend: Textured and printed wallpaper

Wallpaper has been trending for some years now, and it’s still holding strong in 2024, especially selections that boast texture, bold patterns and fabric. “In 2023, we launched our first wallpaper collection with Ever Atelier, Ever X Yates, and it led us to experiment with wall coverings in new ways. For example, new construction ceilings are typically much taller nowadays, and implementing wallpaper can help weigh it down and feel more proportional,” says Bryan Yates, principal designer of Yates Desygn. “In addition, we are currently framing three panels of a de Gournay print to work as a 9-foot-by-9-foot piece of art and create a more significant moment in a client’s dining space rather than using traditional panels as a series.”
Adam notes that adding the right wallpaper to a space helps to evoke a mood, too. “People are wanting texture as opposed to a super flat, quiet space. For instance, when you’re having a dinner party in a dining room covered in cool silk wallpaper, it makes people want to stay. We want our clients to have dinner parties that go on all night,” she says.
