What Does It Mean to Exhaust Your Benefits?
Individual states manage and regulate their own unemployment benefits policies and requirements. On average, these benefits last for 26 weeks or about 6 months.

With the holiday shopping season just starting and prices of many consumer goods continuing to rise, saving money can seem impossible. But those financial pressures also make doing so even more important.
“Saving is your margin,” says Eric Maldonado, a certified financial planner and owner of Aquila Wealth Advisors. “When things happen — your car breaks down or there’s a layoff, or smaller stuff like gifts for the holidays — you have something to fall back on.” Maldonado notes that saving can also allow you to have money for fun things.
The personal savings rate for Americans has been dropping in the last few months, and as of July was 3.5%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

“If you know you’re going to spend $1,200 at Christmas, then put aside $100 a month for the whole year,” Carbonaro suggests. “Everybody overspends in December unless you budgeted for it.”

When Ryan Greiser, a CFP and founder of the financial firm Opulus, and his wife noticed their credit card bill going up with inflation, they brainstormed ways to cut back. One of their most successful ideas was relying on online grocery ordering with curbside pickup.
“We noticed that if we did curbside pickup, our bill was $50 to $100 less than if we went into the store because we only bought the things on our list. It reduced impulse buys and allowed us to easily compare prices and coupons that popped up on the screen,” Greiser says. Greiser and his family also started saving $10 to $30 a month by rotating their streaming subscriptions based on what shows they were currently watching. “We keep one or two active subscriptions and cancel the rest or pause it when a show wraps up so we can rotate to the next one,” he says, adding that he sets a reminder on his calendar so he doesn’t forget to cancel.
Similarly, he pauses his fitness subscriptions when the weather is good enough to exercise outside. “They are month to month, so easy to pause and restart,” he says.

Speaking up for yourself is another saving strategy. “You have power as a consumer,” Tu says.
That means you can ask your bank to waive late fees or overcharge fees, or ask for a discount on shoes that have a scuff on them. “Be polite, be kind, but you can be entitled and understand that your business has value,” she adds. The answer might be “no,” but there’s no reason not to ask, and it might just save you some money.

Find discounts on the bills you don’t look at very often, too. Instead of letting your home and auto insurance auto-renew each month, consider taking time to shop around through an online comparison tool. When Greiser did that, he ended up saving a total of $1,000 on his bundled auto and home insurance plan.

Popular cash-back apps like Rakuten, Ibotta and RetailMeNot allow you to earn cash back for online shopping after you set up an account. “I highly recommend using cash-back apps,” Tu says. “I know it seems like kind of a pain to sign up, but you can save hundreds of dollars a year because it lets you get cash back on purchases you were already making.”

Services like Instacart need personal grocery shoppers, and the average shopper makes $15 to $20 an hour to deliver groceries. Drivers are paid per order, and you get to keep 100% of your tips. You also get to choose your schedule, so a teacher could choose to work in the evenings or on weekends. Or, you could choose to only deliver groceries during the summer.

Common Types of Identity Theft and Their Consequences
According to the 2020 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR), some of the most common data breach attempts include:
Credential stuffing – Credential stuffing occurs when many username and password combinations are inserted to try to gain access to an account. According to the DBIR, an average of 922,331 attempts were made at organizations that experienced this type of attack.
Malware – Malware is a type of virus that infiltrates your network, often to steal information, such as your personal data and identification. Malware usually relies on exploiting a system’s vulnerabilities.
Ransomware – Ransomware takes a hold of an account and blocks out the authentic user. To regain access, you are instructed to pay a large ransom.
Phishing – Phishing attempts that try to get you to hand over your credentials by pretending to be your bank or other trusted sender are increasingly using social engineering to trick you, according to the DBIR. An example of this type of attack was committed by Chinese hackers who breached an email system of a Mumbai branch to learn the rhythm of the business, identify important members of the business, and learn its vocabulary and customs. The hackers ran off with nearly $19 million.
A newer method to try to steal identities is account takeover fraud in which the criminal gains access to your account and then changes information about it so that you’re not informed of luxury purchases or cash withdrawals.
Identity theft can cause tremendous damage to your credit. It often takes months or longer to learn about the theft and the accounts affected, so by the time you notice, the thief could have been racking up thousands of dollars of debt in your name and not paying on any of it. Additionally, you can face additional legal consequences, such as having your wages garnished or being sued. Once your information is stolen, it can be difficult to stop the damage because your information might be sold on the dark web.
How to Avoid Identity Theft
It’s more important than ever to be vigilant about protecting your identity online since more people are working from home and logging into public Wi-Fi than ever before. Here are some tips to help you avoid identity theft:
Keep an eye on your credit and changes in your score
Avoid accessing any financial data from an unsecured network
Consider using credit monitoring tools
Use strong passwords and don’t repeat passwords across various sites
What to Do If You’re a Victim of Identity Theft
If it’s already too late and you suspect someone has already stolen your identity, it’s time to move on to damage control. You might want to freeze your credit so that no one can apply for new credit in your name. Order a free credit report and carefully review it for any unauthorized accounts or changes.
Report the theft to law enforcement. You might need to make a police report and provide a copy to your creditors. The FTC’s website has additional resources for identity theft victims.

The $200 signup bonus can be done online, and for the hassle of going in branch you’ll hopefully be able to get this offer with the double cashback. If someone can max out the $8,000 on gas, that would get you an extra $320 in cashback (that’s in additional to the generous 4% regular earn rate on gas).
PNC branches are around in many states, listed above. I can see this being a nice deal for someone who can max out the gas category, and possibly even for the other categories. Some people might also consider signing up for the online offer to get the $200 signup bonus. The ongoing rate of of 4% on gas is pretty nice too, irrespective of any signup bonus.

1. There are two versions of the card
With a single application for the Belk credit card, you’ll actually be considered for two versions of the card. Ultimately, the card you’re offered will depend on your financial record and credit scores. These are the two cards you’ll be considered for:
The Belk Rewards+ card is a “closed-loop” credit card, meaning it can be used to make purchases only inside Belk stores and salons, as well as on Belk.com.
The Belk Rewards+ Mastercard is an “open-loop” credit card, meaning you can use it anywhere Mastercards are accepted.

2. Big spenders earn rewards at higher rates
Like most store cards, the Belk credit card is designed to reward brand loyalists, offering elevated rewards when you spend more on the card at Belk. Here’s how much you’ll earn at each spending tier, regardless of which version of the Belk card you have:
Spend $299.99 or less per calendar yearon the cardat Belk: You reach Belk’s “Insider” tier, and your card earns 4 points per $1 spent at Belk, equivalent to 4% back in store rewards.
Spend between $300 and $999 on the card in a calendar year at Belk: You hit the “Premier” level, and your card earns 5 points per $1 spent at Belk, equivalent to 5% back in store rewards.
Spend $1,000 or more in a calendar year at Belk: You reach “Elite” status, and your card earns 7 points per $1 spent at Belk, equivalent to 7% back in store rewards.
Beyond that, the open-loop Belk Rewards+ Mastercard version also offers 2 points per $1 spent on gas and grocery purchases, along with 1 point per $1 spent on all other non-Belk purchases.
With either card, once you reach the spending threshold for a new status tier at Belk, you’ll start earning rewards at that status beginning with the next billing cycle, and you can maintain that status until the end of the following year. If, for example, you earned Elite status in September 2023, you would keep that status until Dec. 31, 2024.
Note, however, that qualifying purchases necessary to reach a status tier will reset each January. So in the example above, while you’d enjoy Elite status until the end of 2024, your purchases from October to December 2023 wouldn’t count toward your status in 2025.
3. Rewards can’t be saved for a big splurge
This is another area where the Belk credit card isn’t the best deal for just occasional visitors. Each time you earn 500 points through your Belk credit card, those points are automatically converted to a certificate for $5 in Belk Rewards Dollars. Certificates are sent via email or through your paper credit card statement and typically expire within 90 days of issuance.
You can apply up to $200 in Belk Rewards Dollars to a single transaction. But with such a short expiration window, all but the most frequent Belk shoppers may struggle to save up rewards for a significant purchase.
To help maximize savings, you can stack Belk Rewards Dollars with the store’s frequent online, in-app and paper coupons.

Both versions of the Belk credit card are also accepted inside Belk salons, and payments for salon services apply toward your rewards tier. However, payments for salon services don’t earn points toward store rewards, and you can’t use Belk Rewards Dollars to pay for salon services.
4. Financing plans are available, but they come with terms
As of this writing, the Belk credit card offers a variety of financing plans to help shoppers spread the cost of large purchases over time:
The Table Top Special Payment Plan can be applied to Conn’s x Belk purchases or guild products (including china, crystal, silver and table linens) with an initial purchase of $300.
The Fine Jewelry Special Payment Plan is available with an initial in-store purchase of $500 or more on eligible fine jewelry. Once established, the plan can also be applied to future in-store fine jewelry purchases of $150 or more.
The Belk Rewards+ Flex Pay Plan is available upon request for Premier and Elite level cardholders. Once activated, this plan is automatically applied to all purchase types until cardholders request to cancel Flex Pay.
These options function much like some buy now, pay later plans. They allow you to finance a Belk purchase on your card without interest — as long as you pay the agreed-upon minimum amount each month under the terms of the plan. If you don’t meet these requirements, you may be subject to interest or late fees.
Also, note that purchases made with these financing plans don’t earn rewards, nor do they count toward your Rewards+ status for future calendar years. So if you need to finance a large Belk purchase over time, you might be better off with a traditional 0% intro APR credit card.
5. You won’t want to carry a balance
As of September 2023, both the Belk Rewards+ credit card and the Belk Rewards+ Mastercard carry a variable APR approaching 30%. That’s not an uncommon figure among store credit cards, but it is higher than average.
That means to actually save money through the Belk credit card’s elevated rewards, it’s essential that you pay your balance in full each month. If you don’t, chances are high that the interest you accrue on the card will outweigh any rewards you‘ve earned.
