In the past, real estate investing was only accessible to the affluent. However, the advent of real estate investment trusts (REITs) has altered this perception.
Investing in real estate through a REIT eliminates the need for purchasing and managing properties individually. This can be a smart way to branch out from the stock market and diversify your investments, yet it’s important to note that economic downturns may still affect your returns.
In this piece, we’ll explore the advantages and disadvantages of REITs and guide you on how to embark on this investment journey.
What is a REIT?
A real estate investment trust (REIT) is a company that owns and operates income-generating real estate. A group of investors will pool their money together to invest in a REIT, which makes it possible for you to earn rental income from real estate without buying and managing it yourself.
REITs invest in all sectors of the real estate market, including apartment buildings, hotels, retail locations, warehouses, and more.
Investing in REITs is popular due to its potential for a stable income and ease of buying and selling as most REITs are publicly traded. Additionally, the wide range of real estate sectors that REITs invest in adds to its appeal, providing investors with diverse investment opportunities.
REIT Requirements
To be recognized as a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) by the Internal Revenue Code (IRC), a company must adhere to several guidelines, such as:
Offering shareholders a minimum of 90% of taxable income as dividends each year.
Investing a minimum of 75% of its resources in real estate assets or cash.
Generating at least 75% of its gross income through real estate rentals, mortgage interest, or sales.
Being taxed as a corporation.
Maintaining a board of directors or trustees.
Having a minimum of 100 shareholders after its first year in operation.
Limiting the ownership of its shares by no more than five individuals, with each holding no more than 50% of the total shares
The Pros and Cons of Investing in REITs
There are upsides and downsides to any investment decision, and REITs are no exception. If you’re on the fence about investing in a REIT, here are a few things you should consider first.
Pros
Diversify your portfolio: Investing in a REIT is a good way to diversify your portfolio outside the stock market. And it allows you to invest in real estate without having to take on the risk of buying and managing the properties yourself.
Steady stream of income: Many people are drawn to REITs for the steady dividend payments. By law, a REIT must distribute at least 90% of its taxable income to its shareholders.
Less volatile investment: There is no such thing as a risk-free investment, but REITs do tend to be less volatile than the stock market.
Liquid asset: Unlike physical real estate, REITs are a liquid investment and much easier to buy and sell quickly.
Cons
Some REITs can be risky: Not all REITs are created equal and in particular, non-traded or private REITs are not as easy to sell.
They can be expensive: To begin investing, some REITs require a minimum investment of $25,000.
You may lose dividend payments: During an economic downturn, you could lose your dividend payments if the property stops producing adequate income.
Different Types of REITs
There are several kinds of REITs, depending on how the shares are bought and held. Here is an overview of the different types of REITs you can invest in.
Publicly-Traded Equity REITs
Publicly traded REITs are listed on a public stock exchange, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or the NASDAQ. They are regulated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Individual investors can buy and sell REITs with an ordinary brokerage account. Publicly traded REITs tend to be more transparent and liquid than non-traded or private REITs.
Public Non-Traded REITs
A public non-traded REIT is listed with the SEC but is not listed on an exchange. They can only be purchased through certain types of brokers, and are much harder to buy and sell.
According to the SEC, it can also be much harder to determine the value of a non-traded REIT. Non-traded REITs don’t usually provide an estimate of the value per share until 18 months after the offering closes.
Private REITs
Private REITs are unlisted and aren’t typically regulated by the SEC. This makes them harder to value and a riskier investment. They also tend to be much more expensive, and often require a minimum investment of $25,000 or more.
Equity REITs
An equity REIT operates like a landlord and owns income-producing real estate. The company manages the property, provides basic upkeep, and collects monthly rent payments.
Mortgage REITs
A mortgage REIT doesn’t own the property but instead owns debt securities backed by the property. They collect the monthly payments, but someone else owns and manages the property. This tends to be a riskier investment than an equity REIT, but the shareholder dividends also tend to be higher.
Hybrid REITs
A hybrid REIT is a combination of an equity and mortgage REIT. The company typically owns and operates both real estate properties and commercial real estate mortgages on its portfolio.
How do I invest in a REIT?
Investing in REITs can be done by buying individual REITs listed on public stock exchanges, or by investing in a REIT mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF). The latter offers the advantage of exposure to real estate through a single investment, without the need to buy and manage individual REITs.
If unsure where to begin, seeking the guidance of a broker or financial planner can be helpful in finding the best investment option that suits your needs.
Is investing in a REIT the right choice for me?
Maybe, depending on your level of risk tolerance and financial goals. REITs do have a strong track record of growing dividends and long-term capital appreciation.
Many investors appreciate the steady form of income that a REIT can provide. And publicly traded REITs are regulated by the SEC and professionally managed, so they tend to be pretty transparent.
Bottom Line
Many people are interested in investing in real estate but don’t have the time or money to buy and manage properties on their own. If you find yourself in this situation, REITs could be a suitable alternative for you.
With REITs, you can diversify your investment portfolio and reap the rewards of consistent dividend payments. Additionally, REITs tend to have high liquidity, making them a simpler investment than conventional real estate.
However, non-traded and private REITs can be more risky and opaque, so it’s crucial to thoroughly understand the investment before committing. If unsure, seeking guidance from a financial advisor can help determine the best approach for you.

Real Estate Investment Trust FAQs
What is a real estate investment trust (REIT)?
A REIT is a type of investment vehicle that owns and operates income-generating real estate properties. REITs allow individual investors to invest in a diversified portfolio of real estate assets. These include office buildings, apartments, shopping centers, and warehouses.
How do REITs generate income?
REITs generate income by owning and managing a portfolio of income-producing real estate assets, such as apartment buildings, hotels, office buildings, and retail spaces. These assets generate rental income, which is then distributed to REIT shareholders in the form of dividends.
Additionally, REITs can also generate income through the sale of real estate properties or by financing real estate developments, such as mortgage origination or securitization.
How are REITs different from other real estate investment options?
One aspect that sets REITs apart from other real estate investment options is their publicly traded nature. Many REITs can be found on stock exchanges, just like regular stocks, enabling individual investors to purchase and sell REIT shares with ease and agility. This allows individual investors to access real estate investments without the hassle of directly owning and managing properties.
Are REITs a good investment?
Investing in REITs can provide a lucrative opportunity for investors seeking to diversify their portfolio and earn passive income from the real estate market. However, as with any investment, REITs are not without their own set of risks.
It’s imperative to weigh the potential rewards against these risks before making a final investment decision. Researching the investment options available to you can help mitigate potential risks and maximize your chances of success.
What are the risks of investing in REITs?
Investing in REITs can be complex and entails potential risks. Key factors such as economic downturns, interest rate fluctuations, intense competition, subpar management, and limited liquidity can negatively impact REIT returns.
To safeguard your investments, it’s imperative to perform thorough market analysis and seek professional financial advice. This approach helps you establish your investment goals and risk appetite, enabling you to make well-informed decisions and potentially lower the risks associated with REIT investments.
Can REITs be held in a retirement account?
Yes, REITs can be held in a retirement account such as a traditional IRA, Roth IRA, or a 401(k).
Are REIT dividends taxable?
Yes, REIT dividends are generally taxable as ordinary income. However, REITs may also pay capital gains distributions, which are taxable at the capital gains rate.
How do I buy REITs?
REITs can be purchased through a brokerage account, just like stocks. You can place an order to buy REIT shares online, over the phone, or through a broker.
Can I buy REITs directly from the company?
While a few REITs offer the option to buy shares directly from the company, this is not a widespread practice. Typically, REITs are listed on stock exchanges and can only be acquired through a brokerage account.
Are REITs suitable for all investors?
REITs may not be suitable for all investors. Assess your financial aspirations, risk appetite, and investment timeline to determine if REITs align with your investment strategy. To make informed investment choices, it’s advisable to either seek advice from a financial expert or conduct extensive research.

Capital One Shopping Review
Below is my Capital One Shopping Review.
What is Capital One Shopping? How does Capital One Shopping work?
Capital One Shopping is your go-to tool for smart and easy online shopping.
Formally known as Wikibuy, this tool is a browser extension and a mobile app. You can add it to browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari. For when you’re shopping from your phone, the Capital One Shopping app is available for iOS and Android devices, so that you can make sure you’re saving money no matter where you are.
Here’s how it fits into your shopping routine: as you shop online, the extension automatically looks for lower prices and applicable coupon codes. If you’re thinking about buying a particular item, Capital One Shopping will let you know if it finds the same item at a better price elsewhere.
Capital One Shopping is even more rewarding too because you earn points for your purchases. These points can be redeemed for gift cards at many different retailers. So, you save money and get rewarded – it’s a win-win!
Capital One Shopping is designed to be easy for everyone, whether you’re good with technology or not. All you have to do is install it, shop, and you’ll save money. It’s that easy!

7 Ways To Save Money With Capital One Shopping
Capital One Shopping has several different tools to make sure that you save the most money when shopping online. These tools include:
1. Automatically apply coupon codes
While shopping online, Capital One Shopping’s browser extension can automatically apply coupon codes at checkout.
This means you don’t have to look around the internet for coupons, as the tool seamlessly searches for and applies the best available codes for your purchases.
This is my favorite thing about Capital One Shopping. I love that I don’t have to look on a bunch of websites to find coupon codes. Instead, the Capital One Shopping browser extension does everything for me and helps me save money. This way, I don’t forget to enter coupon codes either, as it automatically does it for me!
According to my Capital One Shopping dashboard, this tool has saved me $1,047.26 since I started using it over 32 shopping transactions!
2. Earn rewards points
As you shop with participating retailers, you can earn rewards points in your Capital One Shopping account.
You can then redeem these points for gift cards at different stores, giving you sort of like cash back on purchases you would be making anyway.
You simply just go to the Rewards & Savings tab when you are logged in on Capital One Shopping to see how much money you have available in shopping rewards. You can then exchange this for a gift card to places such as Adidas, American Eagle, Hotels.com, Kohl’s, Chewy, and so much more.
I recently redeemed my points for a $50 gift card to T.J.Maxx – couldn’t have been easier, as you don’t have to do anything extra.
3. Price comparison tool
Capital One Shopping’s price comparison tool helps shoppers find lower prices across different online stores.
Before you buy an item, this feature shows you where it may be available for less, sometimes including the costs of tax and shipping to give you a good idea of how much money you can save overall.
I really like this feature as sometimes the price can vary by a lot between different stores and even on Amazon. In fact, I was recently looking at furniture online, and the price difference from one store and another was nearly $500.
4. Price Protection
Note: This part of the program just ended. Here’s what they have said: “What happened to Price Protection? Capital One Shopping is no longer offering our Active Savings Monitoring/Price Protection product. We have updated our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to reflect this change. We will still be offering many other opportunities for you to save with Capital One Shopping via our browser extension and emails.”
If you purchase an item and the price drops shortly after, Capital One Shopping tracks and alerts you to the price drops. It can help you request a refund for the difference without needing to monitor prices after you’ve made your purchase manually.
This is a nice feature, as it can save you a lot of money. I know I can’t be the only one who gets a little annoyed when I notice that something has dropped a lot in price right after I buy it. This feature can help you keep track of price drops so that you can maybe try to ask for a refund for the difference in price of an item.
For example, if you buy something for $50, but then the next week it drops to $25, you may be able to ask the online store for a refund of $25.
5. Capital One Shopping watchlist
Another great feature that Capital One Shopping offers is a watchlist.
You can add items to your Capital One Shopping watchlist and receive notifications if prices drop. It helps you be smart about when to buy things. When there’s a sale, it lets you know right away, so you can get the best deals.
To keep an eye on specific products, add them to your watchlist. When you view an item online that you’re interested in, click the Capital One Shopping icon or button to add it. You’ll get notifications, such as email alerts, if there’s a price drop or if a coupon code becomes available for that item.
6. Universal product search engine
This feature acts as a centralized search engine, comparing prices of a product across many different online stores. You can find where your desired item is selling for the least amount of money with minimum effort.
For example – if you are interested in a blender, you can simply just go straight to Capital One Shopping’s website and type in “blender” in their search bar.
It will then list out all of the deals and prices on blenders that the tool knows about. This way, you can just search for the best price on a blender on one site, instead of having to go to multiple sites to find the best deal.
7. Capital One Shopping hotels and travel
When planning travel, Capital One Shopping helps you find the lowest rates on hotels. Just like with products, it compares prices across a number of travel sites to help make sure that you’re getting a good deal on your accommodations.
You can find this feature when you are logged in on their website and heading to the Hotels tab. Then, just enter the location of where you want to travel to, the dates, and the amount of people you are traveling with.
How To Earn Gift Cards With Capital One Shopping
Capital One Shopping has a unique way for you to earn rewards that you can convert to gift cards. By using this service, your regular shopping activities can lead to even more easy savings.
With Capital One Shopping, earning gift cards is tied to the use of shopping credits. When you shop online with Capital One Shopping tools, you can earn shopping credits (also known as points or rewards) on your purchases.
Here’s how you can earn points with Capital One Shopping:
Automatic coupons – As you shop, the free browser extension automatically finds and applies coupons, which earns you shopping rewards.
Price comparison – If you buy a recommended deal, you can earn shopping credits.
Price drop alerts – When items you’ve looked at drop in price, purchasing them can also reward you with credits.
Redeeming points for gift cards
Redeeming your Capital One Shopping credits for gift cards is pretty easy. Once you’ve earned enough credits, you can exchange them for gift cards at places like Macy’s, Nike, Gap, DoorDash, T.J.Maxx, Lowe’s, and more.
To get a free gift card with Capital One Shopping:
Check your balance – You can see how many points you have on the Capital One Shopping app under the Rewards & Savings tab.
Choose your gift card – Select from the list of available gift cards within the Capital One Shopping portal.
Confirm your redemption – Follow the prompts to exchange your credits for the gift card that you want.
I honestly didn’t even know that this was a feature of Capital One Shopping until recently. I was mainly just using this site for the promo code search feature (because it is soooo nice and easy to use!) for my online purchases. One day, I logged in and realized that I had enough points for a free gift card. It’s like a nice little bonus!
Capital One Shopping Alternatives
When you’re looking for the best deals online, you have several options other than Capital One Shopping. Each alternative has unique features that might fit your shopping habits differently.
Below, you can see how Capital One Shopping stacks up against other popular sites – Honey, Rakuten, and Fetch.
Capital One Shopping vs Honey
Capital One Shopping and Honey (also known as PayPal Honey) are very similar.
Honey also has a web browser extension that automatically finds and applies coupon codes at checkout. Honey does not compare prices between different online stores, which is the main difference between the two apps.
You can sign up for PayPal Honey here.

Capital One Shopping vs Rakuten
Rakuten, formerly known as Ebates, is a popular cash back and shopping rewards program. It differs from Capital One Shopping mainly in its cash back model. Rakuten gives you a percentage of cash back on your purchases, depending on the store. Your earnings with Rakuten are distributed quarterly, whereas Capital One Shopping provides reward points that can be redeemed for gift cards.
All you do is click on a store that you want to shop through (they have tons of stores such as Walmart, Target, Old Navy, etc.) and shop just like how you normally would shop online.
When you sign up for Rakuten through my referral link, you can get a free $10 cash sign-up bonus.
Capital One Shopping vs Fetch
Fetch Rewards is a phone app that rewards you for grocery shopping (yes, just the normal grocery shopping that you do all the time!). With Fetch, you earn points by uploading shopping receipts, which can be exchanged for gift cards.
Capital One Shopping is more versatile since it works across different online retailers and automatically applies savings at checkout, not just on groceries.
But, Fetch is great for in-person shopping. If you’re looking for the best money-saving app for groceries, I’ve been using Fetch Rewards the last few months, and it is so easy to save on groceries and other daily purchases! All you have to do is take a picture of your receipt with your cell phone, and you can easily earn points. I scan any and all receipts into my Fetch Rewards app and can easily earn rewards. You can sign up for Fetch Rewards here.

Capital One Shopping pros and cons
Knowing the pros and cons about the different sites can help you pick the right one. Capital One Shopping is great for finding coupon codes that actually work, comparing prices, and earning rewards that turn into gift cards. But maybe you like Rakuten for simple cash back, Honey for instant coupons, or Fetch for rewards on groceries.
Think about what matters most to you – getting discounts right away, having rewards, or sticking to a specific loyalty program. This way, you can choose the shopping rewards that suit you best.

For example, if your travel companion passes away before your departure date, you may be able to recoup the money you spent on flights and hotels.

Baggage delays: If you’re traveling via a common carrier, such as a commercial airline or railroad, Chase may reimburse you for clothing, toiletries and other expenses associated with baggage delays. A common carrier is any company that charges members of the public for transportation services.

If you’re in an accident or someone steals or vandalizes your rental, one of Chase’s insurance partners may pay to replace or repair the vehicle.

One of the best reasons to get the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is because you get extra bonus points on several types of travel expenses. If you use Chase to book a hotel or rent a vehicle, you’ll earn 10 bonus points per dollar spent. For example, a hotel stay worth $500 gives you 5,000 bonus points.

Bonus Points on Dining Purchases
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is even more beneficial if you dine out frequently. When you make an eligible restaurant purchase, you’ll earn 3 points per dollar spent.
Airport Lounge Access

Additional Value When Redeeming Through Chase Ultimate Rewards®
The value of your bonus points increases by 50% when you redeem them through Chase Ultimate Rewards®. This makes it easier to use your bonus points to cover your travel expenses.
The Drawbacks
High Annual Fee
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® comes with an expensive annual fee. Although this is a bit steep, you can easily earn back the fee if you qualify for the $300 annual travel credit and use some of your other card benefits.
Focus on Travel
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is a great credit card if you travel frequently. It may not be the best fit for your needs if you’re a homebody who prefers to earn bonus points in other categories, as non-travel categories only earn bonus points at a rate of 1 point per dollar spent. For example, if you spend $300 on clothing, you’ll only earn 300 bonus points.
Is It Worth It?
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is absolutely worth it if you travel or dine out often enough to earn more than the annual fee in benefits. Note that this card is reserved for consumers with scores in the good to excellent range.
Chase Sapphire Reserve® FAQ
Is the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card hard to get?
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® card is somewhat hard to get, as it’s reserved for consumers with good to excellent credit scores.
Is the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card better than the Chase Sapphire Preferred® card?
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® comes with more benefits than the Sapphire Preferred®, but it also has a much higher annual fee. If you’re looking for an inexpensive card with good benefits, you may want to consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred® card. Otherwise, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card gives you access to better perks.
Is the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card a luxury card?
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® card is a premium credit card, but it’s not one of the cards in the Luxury Card portfolio. Luxury Card issues the Mastercard® Titanium Card™, the Mastercard® Gold Card™ and the Mastercard® Black Card™.

The Minnesota-based airline Sun Country has its own credit card for frequent fliers of the budget carrier. The Sun Country Visa credit card, issued by First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO), has an annual fee but also some perks that may make the card a worthwhile investment. Certainly, this card could make sense for people who fly Sun Country’s relatively limited routes: The airline is in more than 100 airports across the U.S., Mexico, Central America, Canada and the Caribbean.
But if Sun Country airline doesn’t satisfy your travel plans, then the Sun Country credit card won’t do much for you, either. In that case, a general travel card or another airline card would be a better fit.
1. It has an annual fee
You’ll pay $69 a year for the Sun Country credit card, placing it within the mid-tier travel card category. Compared with similar cards, the Sun Country falls a little short in terms of value. For example, for a slightly higher annual fee, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card offers 5x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 2x miles on everything else, a $100 credit for Global Entry or PreCheck every four years, and perhaps most importantly, the ability to transfer miles to Capital One’s 15 travel partners.
2. Perks can help offset the fee
Sun Country cardholders get the following benefits, some of which can help recoup some of the annual fee:
Priority boarding on Sun Country flights every time you fly.
One free premium drink per flight.
50% off seat selections and first checked bag for you and your travel companions when traveling on the same itinerary. Seat selections and bag fees must be prepurchased to receive the discount.
The ability to get 10,000 bonus points if you spend at least $10,000 over 12 consecutive billing cycles beginning with the account anniversary. Points are worth 1 cent each, so 10,000 bonus points are worth $100 toward Sun Country flights.
3. It has a decent sign-up bonus
New Sun Country Visa cardholders can get 25,000 points if they spend at least $1,000 in the first three billing cycles after account opening. Because 1 point is worth 1 cent, the sign-up bonus is worth $250. Note that the bonus can only be redeemed toward more Sun Country flights.
The Sun Country card’s welcome offer is fine, but it’s hardly the best. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, widely recognized as the gold standard among mid-tier travel cards, has a $95 annual fee, but the sign-up bonus is far superior to the Sun Country card’s. New Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card holders get the following welcome offer: Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That’s $750 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.
4. The card pairs well with Sun Country’s loyalty program
The Sun Country card earns the most points on Sun Country bookings, but it has some good everyday spending categories, too. The card earns:
Unlimited 3 points for each $1 on Sun Country purchases.
Unlimited 2 points for each $1 on gas and groceries. (Wholesale clubs are ineligible.)
Unlimited 1 point for each $1 on everything else.
Even better, rewards earned with the credit card are stackable with Sun Country’s loyalty program, Sun Country Rewards. Members of the Sun Country Rewards Program get:
2 points for every $1 spent directly with Sun Country, either online at suncountry.com or by calling Sun Country Reservations.
1 point for every $1 spent on bookings made through a travel agent or other travel websites.
That means if you have the Sun Country credit card and are enrolled in the Sun Country Rewards Program, which you can do at www.suncountry.com, you’ll earn 5 points per $1 on Sun Country purchases.
Rewards don’t expire as long as the account is open and in good standing.
5. Redemption is limited
Points earned with the Sun Country card are only redeemable for travel booked directly with Sun Country including flights, seats, checked bags and vacation packages. Again, consider a general travel card or another airline card if you want more redemption options.

19 Ways To Get Paid To Workout
Below are the best ways to get paid to work out. From popular money-making apps to full-time jobs, there are many people and companies that pay you to work out.
1. Sweatcoin
Sweatcoin is a free app that pays people to walk.
The app rewards daily steps with Sweatcoin currency (coins) that lets you spend the credits on gift cards (such as to Amazon or Starbucks), iPhones, Apple Watches, donate it to charity, and more. Other rewards include a free subscription to meditation apps, a free Scribd trial, wireless headphones, massage memberships, discounts on Barkbox, coffee subscriptions, gym memberships, and more.
This is one of the most popular apps in the world ever, with over 120,000,000 registered members.
2. Stepbet
Stepbet is another popular fitness app that pays you for walking. You can connect your fitness tracker (such as your Apple Watch, Fitbit, Samsung Health, or Google Fit) to the app and even set weekly step goals to keep you motivated.
The app works like this: You select a game to get your step goals, then bet into the pot to join. If you meet your weekly step goal, you can split the pot and get your bet back plus make a profit.
This app makes it easy to stay motivated to walk because you have a financial stake in it as well. This is a great way to get paid to work out from home.
3. Healthywage
Healthywage is one of the most popular fitness apps that pays you to lose weight. Once you’re on the site, you enter how much weight you want to lose. You also enter how long you’ll have to complete the weight loss goal and how much money you want to bet per month.
For example, if I wanted to lose 30 pounds in under 9 months and bet $60 of my own money, my prize range is between $588-$1,116.
There are weekly weigh-ins and support from other contestants to help you get closer to your weight loss goal. If you complete the weight loss goal, you win the prize.
The purpose of HealthyWage is to motivate you to lose weight and make it more motivating and engaging by using a financial incentive.
4. DietBet
DietBet is a platform with the concept of social networking with weight loss goals. DietBet functions essentially as a dieting game where contestants can bet money on the ability to meet their weight loss goals within a certain time frame. Winners get to keep the cash reward.
To get started with DietBet, you join a game that is basically a body weight loss challenge. You place a monetary bet into a communal pot. Whoever wins the pot (and achieves their weight loss goal) gets the divided winnings at the end of the challenge.
To make sure that everyone is playing fairly, you have to submit verifiable weigh-ins at the beginning and end of each challenge via photos or videos.
5. Fit For Bucks
Fit For Bucks is a workout app that pays people to walk, dance, run, and stay active. To get started, download the Fit For Bucks app and connect your activity tracker or Apple Watch. Then you can get moving and start earning rewards for your daily movement.
Rewards include things like free coffee, money towards fitness studios, free haircuts, and more. The goal of this app is to get people active and motivated to move more.
6. Waybetter
Waybetter makes losing weight fun by challenging you with fitness-related games. This app turns what could be described as boring into something that makes healthy habits sustainable and fun to help you on your weight loss journey.
The app works by making games that create micro goals and gives you accountability and support from other like-minded people. Games on Waybetter include things like walking at least 8,000 steps a day, drinking a certain amount of water, decluttering your home, reading books, flexibility challenges, increasing your plank time, and many more.
7. Charity Miles
Charity Miles is a little different than the other apps mentioned in that it doesn’t reward you personally. Instead, your rewards go to the charity of your choice.
To get started, download the Charity Miles app. The app connects with your phone’s Apple Health app and automatically pulls the steps from there. Any fitness devices linked to your Health app will sync to the app. The app turns all of your miles you walk, run, and bike into money for charity.
You can track all kinds of activities for Charity Miles including walks, runs, bike rides, shopping, golfing, dancing, and anything step-related.
8. Rover
One of my favorite ways to make extra money is walking dogs on Rover. Rover is an app that connects dog walkers with dog owners. I have been a Rover dog walker and absolutely loved it. I have been paid for walking dogs (which gave me exercise for the day) and spending time with really cute pets.
To get started on Rover, make a profile and list what services you offer. If you have previous experience dog walking, this is a major plus and will make you stand out from other dog walkers.
If you don’t have previous experience walking dogs, set your rates lower than other people on the app. This will make your rates competitive and you’ll get chosen quicker. These people will leave you reviews (and hopefully good ones, granted your services are great). The more 5-star reviews you have, the more you’ll stand out.

9. Evidation
Evidation is an app that rewards people for doing things like walking, sleeping, biking, and more. To get started, download the app and connect your Apple Health, Fitbit, Garmin, or Oura app. This will sync your daily steps, which will give you points you can redeem in the app.
You can also earn points in the app by participating in surveys that ask questions about your health. For every 10,000 points you earn, Evidation will pay you $10 which you can redeem via PayPal cash and other cash prizes.
10. MapMyFitness
MapMyFitness is an app that tracks workouts including running, cycling, and other physical activities. While you won’t get paid with MapMyFitness, you can enter challenges and win monthly prizes.
Some employers or organizations will use MapMyFitness to stay active by participating in fitness challenges. These challenges backed by employers may even have rewards.
11. Walgreens Balance Rewards
Walgreens Balance Rewards is a program that gives you redemption dollars at Walgreens for doing things like walking and other fitness activities. With the Rewards program, you can link your fitness trackers which will sync your steps in the app.
You can also earn points for doing things like tracking your blood pressure, sleep, and weight.
12. Guided walking tours
If you have a lot of knowledge of your local town or a historical place, you may want to sell guided walking tours.
To get started, find a historical or touristy spot that would work well with a guided walking tour. Create your walking itinerary and highlight key points of interest and historical facts.
Start small and gradually work your way up to offering larger walking tours. This is a great way to combine your love of fitness with your love of a local spot that tourists love to visit.

13. Ski instructor
If you love skiing and enjoy teaching others how to do this sport, you may want to try becoming a ski instructor. This way you can combine your love for the sport and teach others how to ski as well.
To become a ski instructor, you likely need to obtain a recognized ski instructor certification. This will make you more marketable and even allow you to teach more advanced lessons.
Ski resorts are pretty much always hiring ski instructors, and you don’t need to be an expert or an Olympic skier to become a ski instructor either. This is something that you can learn to do.
14. Rock climbing guide
If you like to rock climb, then you may be able to become a rock climbing guide. Earning money doing this requires a combination of skills, certifications, marketing, and networking with other people who also work as guides.
To get started, it’s important to obtain certifications offered by the American Mountain Guides Association. This will increase your credibility and give you more job opportunities.
You may even want to connect with local and online climbing groups to market your business and get the word out that you’re a rock climbing guide. Put up flyers in your local rock climbing gym and make it easy to get in touch with you about your services.
15. Fishing guide
Making money as a fishing guide requires a certain set of skills, certifications, and licenses. It’s also important you have extensive knowledge of the best local fishing spots, seasons, and regulations.
Working as a fishing guide takes a lot of physical activity since you’re doing a lot of walking, wading in water, and (obviously) fishing.
Many places are in constant need of fishing guides, such as lodges and guide companies in Florida and Alaska.
So, you can easily network with local businesses such as bait shops, fishing gear retailers, and local hotels. The more people that know about your services as a fishing guide, the better.
16. Fitness trainer
One obvious way to get paid to workout is to work as a fitness trainer. Working as a fitness trainer involves a combination of skills, marketing yourself effectively, and providing top-notch service to your clients.
To get started as a fitness trainer, it’s important to obtain a reputable certification from organizations like NASM, ACE, or ACSM. Once certified, you can teach others how to workout in person at local gyms or offer virtual training.
You could even sell workout plans as a personal trainer, such as on a social media platform. I have seen many fitness influencers do this over the years.
17. Landscaper
Landscaping is a physically demanding job, but if you love it, you can turn it into a way to make extra money. As a landscaper, you can offer all kinds of services such as lawn maintenance, garden design, and tree and shrub care.
You’ll want to make sure that you take photos of your work and gather a portfolio so future clients can see the incredible work you can do. Word of mouth plays a big role in the landscaping business, so it’s important to give the best service to your clients.
18. Yoga instructor
If you love yoga and want to make money teaching others how to practice, then become a yoga instructor. To get started, you need to obtain a teacher certification from a reputable organization. Reach out to local yoga studios and figure out where people are getting certified in town.
Once you get certified, you can even specialize in a certain niche such as prenatal yoga, therapeutic yoga, power yoga, Bikram yoga, and more. You can teach group classes, private classes, workshops, and even online classes.
You may even want to try developing an online presence which will attract new people to your yoga classes.
19. Share workouts on Instagram
You can make money as a fitness Instagrammer once you have a strong following. It’s important to share high-quality and visually appealing photos and helpful captions. Share workout routines, fitness tips, and inspirational content to keep your audience engaged.
Once you have a good number of followers, you can make money with sponsored content, affiliate marketing, and even selling your own workout training programs and guides. You can even promote your online coaching services and work with people 1-1.
Another way similar to this is to do something similar on a YouTube channel that you create!

Finding the best cities for pets
In our search for the best cities for pets, we analyzed the percentage of apartments in our database that were pet-friendly and allowed dogs or cats.
We also looked at the average cost of veterinarian services in large metro areas with populations above 100,000 and the number of pet-related businesses and parks per capita. Then, we ranked them accordingly.
Here are the best cities for pets in the U.S.
10. Davie, FL
Just north of Miami, Davie is a town with plenty of scenic parks. Head over to Happy Tails Dog Park, the city’s pristine dog park, where your dog can socialize and run obstacle courses. The park has three different play areas and doggie water fountains.
There’s also Central Broward Park, which features 110 acres of fields and playgrounds, Vista View Park, a hilly green space to spend the day hiking and Peace Mound Park, which has an ancient burial site.
Located in Broward County, Davie is known for its colleges, universities and technical colleges. It’s home to plenty of family-friendly activities, such as hanging at the Flamingo Garden and Everglades Holiday Park.
9. Vacaville, CA
Fast-growing city Vacaville in Northern California, just 55 miles outside of San Francisco and because it’s not in the heart of the city, it’s a lot more affordable, too.
Vacaville is a great place to get on your bike and take your dog on a run through Alamo Creek Bike Trail or Lagoon Valley Park, a green, fenced off area for off-leash dogs to run around.
Besides sprawling, recreational areas and charming parks, you can also spend the afternoon checking out some of the local wineries.
Vacaville even has its own little museum, honoring the local heritage. It’s an ideal place away from the hustle and bustle, but close enough if you ever need to access a bigger city (only 35 miles from Sacramento).
8. Naperville, IL
Naperville is a suburb of Chicago — it sits just 35 miles west of the Windy City and is home to paths and bridges that hug the DuPage River. Just like Vacaville, Naperville is far enough from the concrete jungle of Chicago so residents can enjoy the more scenic vibe of public art, colorful local shops, cafes and restaurants.
Grab the leash and take your dog on a stroll through Naperville Riverwalk, which has a two-mile path that opens up to the heart of the city. It’s picturesque with lots of green space, shopping and places to eat or get takeout along the way.
7. Arvada, CO
When it comes to outdoor activities, you really can’t find a better place than Colorado. Arvada, which is near Denver, offers a unique, small-town feel with a retro vibe. The city has a historic shopping district called Olde Town and offers plenty of parks, trails (it has 125 miles of hiking and biking!) and lakes where you can see the mountains and bald eagles.
You can hike Mesa Trail and see views of the Flatirons or check out Eldorado Canyon State Park to climb amid sandstone cliffs. Because of its close proximity to nature, low crime rate and educated workforce, Arvada is a popular place to live. It encompasses the top 20 of Colorado’s wealthiest ZIP Codes.
6. Scottsdale, AZ
While summers are hot, the rest of the year in Scottsdale is relatively mild, which makes it a comfortable place to live with your pet and get outside. Just outside of Arizona’s capital Phoenix, Scottsdale is well-known for incredible views of rock formations at Camelback Mountain and Hole in the Rock, a geological cluster with big open spaces.
Scottsdale even has a number of popular pet-friendly hotels (for some cool, indoor time for those scorching summers) and is generally welcoming of pets in public places, such as its posh Scottsdale Fashion Square and local wineries.
5. Tyler, TX
In eastern Texas, Tyler is known for its rose gardens and even has a museum dedicated to remembering the rich history of the town’s annual Texas Rose Festival.
Tyler is the kind of place where you can visit popular attractions, such as the Tyler Azalea trail and any of their lakes, such as Lake Tyler and East Lake Tyler.
The city’s location and access to nature make it a great place for pets. The Sunrise Paw Park is a massive dog park — four acres, to be exact. The park, just northwest of Old Jackson Highway, has separate fenced off sections for small and large dogs to play and socialize.
4. Boulder, CO
At the base of the Rocky Mountains is Boulder, CO. The city offers the best of both worlds, with the intricate rock formations of the Flatirons just west and the convenience of Pearl Street’s downtown’s shops, cafes and restaurants.
You can take your furry best friend just about anywhere in Boulder, including hiking trails and picnics with some spectacular scenery.
A dog-friendly must-do hike is the Flatirons Vista and Doudy Draw Trail, which is a beginner-level, 3.7-mile hike that will take about three hours. It’s an incredible way to spend the day, especially in the spring.
3. Ann Arbor, MI
Ann Arbor is near the Huron River and nicknamed “Tree Town” because of its abundance of green space — even their downtown is filled with trees. Known as one of the best places to live in Michigan, Ann Arbor is a welcoming place for young professionals, families and their pets.
A popular destination for dog-lovers is Swift Run Dog Park, which is an outdoor grassy area with 10 acres of freedom for Fido to get some exercise and be off-leash.
Stroll through the coffee shops and historic downtown area that’s lined with vintage clothing shops, independent bookstores and historic theaters. Ann Arbor is also home to the University of Michigan, and its creative, youthful vibe makes it feel like a typical university town.
2. Charleston, SC
For being such an old city, founded in 1670, Charleston is surprisingly pet-friendly, with tons to do and see with Fido, including James Island County Park. This play haven features a dog beach, four acres of grass, a cleaning station and a fenced play area for small dogs.
Besides dog parks, beaches and trails, Charleston exudes an old, historic charm. The port city has cobblestone streets, especially in the French Quarter and Battery districts.
Go for a stroll down the promenade and Waterfront Park for a relaxing view of the Charleston Harbor. There are also tons of local shopping venues, theaters, museums, cafes and gardens.
1. Greeley, CO
The No. 1 city for Fido is in Greeley, a city in northern Colorado, about an hour away from Denver. There’s plenty of outdoor activities to do with your pet, from spending the afternoon at Poudre River Trail or taking advantage of the green space at Rover’s Run Dog Park.
Greeley is a central hub for community events and unlike its more expensive counterparts in Denver and Boulder, it’s considered a hidden gem due to its affordability in housing.
Greeley is a thriving cultural area, known for its art, entertainment and food-driven events, such as their summer-long Friday Fest and OktoBREWfest in the fall.
Greeley also landed in the No. 35 spot in a well-being index report, which measures community social and health data across populations.

Pet-friendliness (50%)
The percentage of available properties that allow dogs or cats. Listings are from Apartment Guide and Rent.’s November 2020 multifamily rental property inventory.
Veterinarian costs (20%)
Pet businesses per capita (30%)
Businesses include vets, animal hospitals, pet shops, pet training facilities, pet boarding, pet supplies and parks. Counts come from a database of 8 million commercially licensed business listings and may not reflect recent openings or closures.

You’ll pay a pretty penny for all that glamour. It’s seen steadily increasing rent prices for years. But you’ll also see plenty of celebs mingling in its gorgeous bars and restaurants.
Midtown is practically a part of the Vanderbilt University campus and medical center. On any given day, the sidewalks see a diverse rush of students, visiting academics, business executives and lots of healthcare professionals.
You’ll see plenty of Vandy students letting off some steam at some of the many bars crowding the city blocks, but Midtown has its share of family-friendly side streets, as well. Because it’s so walkable to Downtown and Music Row, there’s an abundant selection of hotels and fine dining in the area for tourists to enjoy.
On the other side of Vanderbilt, you’ll find Music Row. If music is what draws you to Nashville then you may seriously want to consider moving to this beautiful neighborhood. You’ll have to look closely to spot the most historic recording studios here. Most are tucked in unassumingly between the residential homes along the tree-lined streets.
Some of the world’s most famous feet have walked the shady sidewalks of Music Row, including (but not limited to) Elvis Presley, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bob Dylan … we could really go on and on.
The sidewalks in SoBro are packed with locals coming and going to work and with tourists taking in the sights and sounds of Downtown Nashville (SoBro literally begins on Broadway, Downtown’s main drag.). There are a ton of gorgeous restaurants to visit, and the Nashville Symphony at the Schermerhorn Center is just a short block or two from it all.

Laura Crowley has done her fair share of exploring lots of cities, but the nightlife, live music, festivals, metro parks and wonderful people of Nashvegas convinced her and her husband to make Nashville their home-base for freelance writing and raising offspring. When she’s not writing, she enjoys reading, fine dining and philosophical conversations with her children.
What is a prepaid debit card? These cards are similar to standard debit cards, with a few exceptions. Just like standard debit cards, you can use prepaid cards to make in-person purchases at most locations that take Visa or Mastercard. In many cases, you can even use these cards to make online purchases.
Instead of depositing money into an account at your local bank, you load money directly onto a prepaid debit card. Some cards also let you set up a direct deposit so you can have the funds from your paycheck directly loaded onto your card.
You can only spend up to the amount of money you have on your card. This may help prevent hefty overdraft fees that some banks and credit unions charge. However, most prepaid debit cards charge other fees, such as monthly maintenance and transaction fees.
Why Would You Want a Prepaid Debit Card?
There are many reasons you might want to consider purchasing a prepaid debit card. For starters, prepaid cards are often more convenient and safer than carrying cash around. These cards can be a good option for those having trouble getting a standard bank account or facing excessive overdraft fees.
Because prepaid debit cards only allow you to spend the value on your card, they can help you curb your spending and gain better control of your finances. It’s important to note that prepaid debit cards don’t help build your credit. They also don’t accrue interest no matter what your balance is.
How Can You Get a Prepaid Debit Card?
Prepaid debit cards are fairly easy to obtain. Many major retailers, such as Walmart and Target, sell these cards. Prepaid cards are also available through some banks and credit card companies. You may be required to provide proof of identification and incur a one-time activation fee.
When choosing a prepaid debit card, be sure to compare your options. Most prepaid cards charge a variety of fees, such as monthly maintenance and transaction fees. Be sure you understand all the costs involved when choosing the right prepaid debit card.
You also want to compare added features. For instance, if you want a prepaid card that allows you to have your paycheck directly deposited onto your card, make sure it offers this feature before purchasing it. Other features you may want to consider are the ability to link your bank account to your debit card so you can transfer money quickly or the ability to give a family member access to your account.
How Do Prepaid Debit Cards Work?
Using a prepaid debit card is pretty simple. Once you purchase the card, follow the activation steps before using it—keep in mind that you may incur a one-time activation fee. If you didn’t load money at the time of purchase, you must do so before using it.
Most prepaid cards allow you to add money by phone, online, or in person at the location you purchased the card. Depending on the type of prepaid card you purchase, you may also be able to set up a direct deposit to have your payroll check load directly on your card.
Once you have money on your card, you can make purchases at most locations that accept Visa or Mastercard, such as retail stores, restaurants, and grocery stores. You can also use ATMs to withdraw cash.
Additionally, you can use your card to pay bills or shop online. However, some cards require you to register your card before making online purchases. To register your card, you just need to follow the instructions that came with it.
Keep in mind that your purchases can’t exceed the balance on your card. For instance, if you try to purchase an item for $300 but only have $275 on your card, the transaction will be denied. The good news is that you won’t face any overdraft fees, and you can’t spend more money than you have available.
Pros and Cons of Prepaid Debit Cards

Pros of Prepaid Debit Cards
Reloadable prepaid debit cards have several great benefits, including:

Keeping you from overspending so you can develop good spending habits

Before purchasing a prepaid debit card, it’s important to understand its fees and limitations. Be sure to read the fine print so you understand exactly what fees you might incur while using the card.
