Since the mid-1990s, inflation has stayed very close to the Federal Reserve’s benchmark of 2% per year, often dipping much lower than that. The upshot has been a long run in which prices have changed little from year to year, with the noticeable exception of an 8% overall jump in 2022. Fortunately, current inflation has largely stabilized and, while still high compared with recent years and the Federal Reserve’s target rate, is back within overall historic norms. All told this has created an environment in which consumers don’t usually think about changing prices all that often.
For retirees, on the other hand, the picture is very different. They have to think in terms of years and decades. For them, inflation is a very powerful force. As prices rise decade over decade it can meaningfully eat away at your retirement savings unless you have prepared in advance. A financial advisor can help you better protect your retirement savings from the effects of inflation and plan for the future.
What Is Inflation?
Inflation measures changing prices in the marketplace. Specifically, it measures how prices increase for the same goods and services over time. For example, when the price of milk increases from $2.85 per gallon to $4.04 per gallon, that’s inflation. The opposite effect, when prices fall, is known as deflation and it is counterintuitively a borderline disaster for most households and consumers.
There are as many ways to measure inflation as there are economists, but the standard measure is known as the Consumer Price Index or CPI. It measures how prices change on an annual basis for a representative group of goods and services across the United States, omitting energy prices and agricultural products. These last two, while essential to household spending, are left out of the inflation statistics because they’re extremely vulnerable to geopolitical and natural events, respectively.
Economists consider a little bit of inflation beneficial. It shows that the economy is producing at capacity, which encourages growth. This is why the Federal Reserve has its inflation benchmark set at 2%, not zero.
For most households, inflation is reflected in both costs and incomes. As prices rise, employers typically increase pay scales to compensate. This is why economists treat inflation as such an emergency because it can create a feedback loop of rising incomes and prices with no natural stopping point. This also makes inflation, under ordinary circumstances, a minor issue. Most households don’t notice small price adjustments over short time frames and pay increases help them keep up over the long run.
Costs of Living in Retirement
In retirement, your basic math is simple: money in vs. money out. If your retirement accounts can generate more money than you spend, you can afford to retire.
The problem with inflation is that it gradually changes the math in this formula. Each year, your “money out” gets a little bit more expensive. Up front, it’s hard to notice. If a gallon of milk goes up by $0.02, that doesn’t stand out. But in the aggregate, these changes add up. For example, say that your costs come to $5,000 in spending per month. With 2% inflation, the next year you would spend $5,100 per month. The year after that, $5,202. The year after that, $5,306.
Even with just a 2% annual price increase, within just three years of retirement, you’re spending $300 more per month than you initially budgeted. And since retirement lasts for decades, inflation has plenty of time to set in.
Some Areas Are Particularly Vulnerable
One of the biggest things to remember about inflation is that it often hits some areas harder than others. For example, a disproportionate and large amount of 2022’s high inflation came courtesy of astronomical prices in the used and rental car markets. For retirees, this can be a double-edged sword depending on how you have structured your finances. You might be safe from some of the worst sectors or you might be particularly exposed.
A few costs of living that are particularly vulnerable to inflation and price swings are:
Housing: In recent decades the cost of housing has risen sharply. If you own a home, whether it’s paid off or on a fixed mortgage, you’re safe from these rising costs. If you rent, particularly in a big city, this will be a huge cost sector as prices go up year-over-year.
Energy and food: These two sectors are omitted from the core inflation measure because they’re extremely volatile. However, that volatility tends to make them particularly sensitive to inflation across the marketplace at large. That’s a particularly big problem because, ultimately, utilities and groceries make up the bulk of most households’ bottom line and just because they’re not in the BLS’ official report doesn’t mean you won’t feel the squeeze.
Imports: Historically, imported goods tend to experience inflation earlier and sooner than most other products in the marketplace. If you buy or rely on products brought in from overseas, this will show up in your budget.
Travel: If you want to travel in your retirement, inflation can make that more expensive. Airfare often jumps during periods of inflation and if you are leaving the country a weaker dollar will make your trip that much more expensive.
Savings and Social Security
Most retirees rely on three sources of income for the “money in” side of their retirement: savings, investments and Social Security. Let’s take a look at each.
Savings: Savings generally refers to the money you have in cash or cash-like assets. Basically, this refers to the money you have in banking products like checking, savings and certificates of deposit. The appeal of keeping money in savings is a certainty. Just putting everything into a savings account is about the lowest-risk option short of buying Treasury bonds. However, it also exposes your money to near-constant erosion. This feels like the safe option, but keeping all your money in the bank is a good way to effectively lost it little by little rather than all at once.
Low-Risk Investments: Low-risk investments tend to include assets like bonds and annuities. These are the middle ground between growth and safety. You want some growth but are willing to sacrifice potential gains for the confidence that you’ll get your money back. These are a mixed bag when it comes to long-term inflation management. The biggest problem is that low-risk investments often define their gains up-front.
Higher-Reward Investments: The most common footprint for a high-reward investment in stocks is either buying shares of an individual company or buying into industry or index funds. These are the growth end of the risk-reward balance. You will get the strongest returns but with the most risk. High-reward investments are the best way to manage inflation in the long run, since strong returns are the best way to keep your investments current with rising prices.
Social Security: Finally, most retiree households depend on Social Security to one degree or another. When it comes to inflation, this is the good news. Each year the Social Security Administration issues its annual COLA or “Cost of Living Adjustment.” This increases the monthly benefits issued to all recipients based on the government’s benchmark inflation rate. The COLA is based on national inflation figures. When prices go up, they tend to increase more in some areas than in others.
How To Address Inflation
So this is what inflation does. It tends to erode the value of low-growth assets and income as prices increase faster than the value of investments. Here are two things you can do to address inflation.
1. Manage Investments
The best way to address inflation in your retirement is to plan for it upfront. Specifically, build your retirement portfolio with inflation in mind. This can mean a few different things, such as investing in:
All of these assets tend to be sensitive to inflation. Stocks and REITs tend to grow with the value of the market, as companies increase their prices to keep pace with inflation. Short-term bonds, meanwhile, mature every few years, allowing you to reinvest in new assets that may better reflect current pricing. And some annuities offer an inflation-adjusted payment schedule, allowing you to plan for long-term growth in your returns.
2. Manage Costs
The biggest issue here is housing. The cost of housing has soared in recent decades and that fever shows no serious signs of breaking. This is most prominent in the rental market. Buying a home before you enter retirement, even if that means downsizing from your apartment, can help you secure your housing costs going forward.
If you own a paid-off home, you won’t have to plan for housing payments. If you start a mortgage prior to retirement, you will at least have fixed rather than escalating costs. Beyond that, prepare a good cash reserve for the wide fluctuations common to the energy and food sectors. These two areas are most prone to volatile price swings, both up and down, during periods of inflation.
The Bottom Line
Inflation can significantly eat away at your retirement savings. It’s important to build a retirement plan that anticipates enough growth to offset this, otherwise, you can see your quality of life decline as your bills get more expensive year after year. It’s important to take the necessary steps to protect your retirement savings.
Inflation Management Tips
The other best way to make plans is with good, solid help. A financial advisor can help you determine how inflation will impact your ability to save what you will need for retirement. Finding a financial advisor doesn’t have to be hard. SmartAsset’s free tool matches you with up to three vetted financial advisors who serve your area, and you can have a free introductory call with your advisor matches to decide which one you feel is right for you. If you’re ready to find an advisor who can help you achieve your financial goals, get started now.

J.D. and I love going out to eat, but we also like to cook. And, fortunately for us, so do most of our friends. This allows us to partake in the art of the potluck.
Potlucks are a frugal way to entertain and bring people together to share good food. Even with quality ingredients, making food at home lets us eat well for less. The hosts provide the space, the organization, a dish or two, and perhaps a theme to spice it up a bit. The guests each bring something for the feast, and the focus is on enjoying everyone’s contribution.
This distributes the cost and effort (enabling more people to host), and makes gatherings more group-oriented. If everyone is on a tighter budget, a potluck still feels like a treat — but with a lower bill. The food choices are usually more varied, too!
Despite the name, to make a potluck successful, you need more than mere luck. No one’s happy with a meal composed only of chips and dips. Without planning, you may end up with six meat dishes and no salads (actually, J.D. would be all for that), or five desserts and a bag of rolls.
As the host, you can either assign items based on the cooking talents (or time constraints, or food allergies) of the guests, or arrange some kind of sign-up so guests can pick their own contribution but avoid too much duplication. Online invitation systems are helpful for these events if the group is large. I find that some groups take well to a themed potluck, such as “Fiesta Night”. This sparks the imagination and can help ensure that the food goes well together.
If your group includes families with young (or picky) children or people with specific food requirements, make sure they bring something that they themselves will eat. Another solution is to devise a “build-a-potluck”: The hosts, for example, might provide the chili, or baked potatoes, or cheese pizzas, or taco meat, and the guests bring all the fixings and toppings. For dessert, a brownie sundae bar can serve the same purpose.
For a streamlined potluck, guests should arrive with their food ready to serve. Unless you know the host can accommodate you, avoid being the person who brings a bag of groceries and expects to use the entire kitchen to prepare your bok choy sautéed in sesame oil. If you’re the host, the responsibility falls to you, then, to provide those items that need to be served hot out of the oven or right off the grill.
Guests should always know the size of the group they’re feeding, so that they can estimate how much to bring. And as a guest, it’s helpful if you bring your own serving dishes and utensils so the host doesn’t have to scrounge up 12 serving spoons. If you bring a pot of soup, make sure the host has enough bowls, or provide them yourself. Just be sure to mark your items or otherwise make sure they get home with you.
Tip: My sister keeps on hand a few cheap but plain salad bowls and serving platters for those times when you know you’ll have to leave early; it avoids the hassles of either trying to transfer your food mid-party or having to retrieve your plate later on. Thrift stores are an excellent source for these.
If you have an especially large group — for a family reunion, say — you might even make assignments based on an alphabetical organization scheme, or how far people are traveling, or some other method.
Some of J.D.’s extended family are Mennonites; they have the art of the potluck down to a science — and the food can’t be beat. Last summer, we went to a cousin’s home for roasted home-raised pig and home-grown corn on the cob. The rest of us chipped in with salads, breads, desserts, and pop. We picked the pork bones clean and made a pile of empty cobs!
In our group of friends, potlucks are especially popular for brunch, but they can work for any meal. You can do a potluck picnic in the park, dress up a potluck into something fancy or keep it strictly casual. Among gardeners, potlucks are a wonderful opportunity to share your bounty during the harvest. And BBQ potlucks are always a hit in our grilling season.
What about those who don’t cook? No problem. A cheese platter or fruit salad is often welcome, but these won’t qualify as frugal if they’re purchased pre-made, so if thrift is one of the goals, even the non-cooks may need to get out the cutting board or use the microwave.
If you invite a few guests who are truly kitchen-phobic, they can bring the beer (or beverage of choice), or maybe even the chips and dip. Those of us who don’t often purchase prepared foods may enjoy the occasional guilty pleasure of Ruffles and French Onion dip! And use common sense: don’t have the perpetually-late-guy bring the appetizers. If someone’s driving a long distance to come, don’t assign them something requiring refrigeration.
With a bit of planning to go along with the “potluck”, these gatherings can be fun, frugal and family-friendly. Entertaining doesn’t have to be a huge expense or burden to the hosts. Add some friends to spread the load and share the good times, and you can focus on the people you wanted to see instead of stressing over providing the entire menu.

Last month, I published Frugality And Ethics – When Is It Stealing? The post was very popular and everyone had an opinion on what was stealing and what was not. Also, many of you gave me new ideas, and I wanted to hear everyone’s input on the situations below. So, I, of course, wanted to publish a Part 2 to the post!
I don’t think that there is anything wrong with saving money (this is a personal finance blog after all), but I do wonder how far people will go to save money – whether it be $1 or $2 or a few hundred dollars.
No one is perfect, and I definitely am not. However, when does frugality or cheapness cross the line and turn into stealing?
Using another person’s wi-fi.
This is something that probably a lot of people are guilty of, or have been guilty of in the past. This is where you use someone else’s wi-fi so that you can get on the internet for free.
Some of you said that if there is no password to the internet account, that it’s free range for anyone to use.
However, I think that you should always pay for your own wi-fi. You might be slowing down the internet for someone else, and they might not even realize that their wi-fi isn’t password protected.
Always protect your wi-fi account!– I also remember discussing a case when I was in college about someone who had unprotected wi-fi and it turned out that their neighbor was searching something illegal. The SWAT team showed up at their door, created a huge scene, took the computers, and destroyed the person’s house all because the neighbor was searching something illegal.
Sharing accounts with others.
This is where someone has an account and multiple people/households share that one account so that only one person is actually paying for the service or product. I have heard of many people doing this with Netflix…
Netflix and other companies have specifically stated that it’s stealing, so yes, I believe it is stealing.
Drinks at a restaurant.
There are three different situations that I would like to share with this one…
1. Paying for one drink and sharing it between two people. The first person might order a soda and the second person orders a water. However, the second person never actually touches the water and only drinks the soda. – I think this is stealing.
2. Asking for a water cup but filling it up with something besides water (such as a soda). – I think this is stealing.
3. Asking for water, a bowl of lemons (I’m talking 4 or 5 whole lemons), and sugar so that you can make your own lemonade. – I think this is being cheap/frugal. I wouldn’t do this though… I know waiters and waitresses hate it when customers do this.
Signing up for something to get something for free.
There are a couple of situations that this applies to. This is when you sign up for something knowing that you won’t buy anything, so that you can get a product or service for free for trying something out. Since Wes used to work in sales, I wouldn’t do either of the situations below just because I don’t like to waste people’s time…
My first example applies to timeshares. Many people listen to timeshare presentations even though they know they will not buy a timeshare, so that they can get whatever it is for free that the timeshare workers are pitching (free movie tickets, free vacation, etc.).
My second example applies to getting professional makeup done. Usually makeup counters/companies at the mall and/or department store will offer free makeup applications as long as you buy something for from them. Some require that you pay upfront, whereas others give you the “option” to pay at the end. I have heard of some people getting a free makeup application knowing full well that they do not plan on buying any makeup afterwards.

Taking condiments.
This is where you go to a restaurant and take a bunch of condiment packs so that you can bring it home and put it in your fridge.
I have received extra packs before (such as from a takeout order), but I have never gone out of my way to take condiments.
Disputing items on your credit card.
In many cases, you can dispute a transaction on your credit card bill that is less than $25 and your credit card company will just automatically refund you because it’s not worth their time to investigate the problem.
I have heard of people who dispute many transactions each year and take advantage of this…
I don’t do this. I believe it is stealing. I have only ever disputed one item on my credit card bill before, and that was because a restaurant accidentally charged me twice for the same meal.
Have you ever done any of the above? What do you think of these situations?
Hawaii is an exciting place to call home. It offers incredible weather, scenic views, friendly people, and a slow-paced lifestyle. If you’re lucky enough to live or work in Hawaii, you might be looking for the best banks in the state.
While the Aloha State has fewer banks than other states, there are still plenty of reputable, member FDIC options available to you.
12 Best Banks in Hawaii
To make your search for a bank a bit easier, we’ve done some research and compiled this list of the best banks in Hawaii.

Beyond checking accounts, First Hawaiian Bank also caters to various other personal banking needs. They offer savings accounts, mortgage services, and wealth management solutions, among other things.

There is no minimum balance requirement, no monthly fees, and no overdraft fees, positioning SoFi as a cost-effective solution for a broad spectrum of users. There’s also an enticing offer of earning up to $250 with qualifying direct deposits.
One of the most compelling aspects of SoFi is the impressive interest rates it offers. The savings account yields a 4.30% APY, while checking account balances earn 1.20% APY, both rates far outpacing those offered by most traditional banks. What’s more, deposits are insured by the FDIC up to $2 million, providing an added layer of financial security.
With SoFi Checking & Savings, accessing your money is both straightforward and convenient. Over 55,000 Allpoint® Network ATMs across the globe offer fee-free withdrawals, ensuring you can easily access your money whenever you need it.
3. Ally Bank
Ally Bank is an online bank that serves residents in every state, including Hawaii. It’s worth considering if you’re seeking an interest bearing checking account or competitive rates on high yield savings accounts, CDs, and money market accounts.
While deposit accounts are Ally’s bread and butter, the bank also offers mortgages, auto refinancing, and investment products. As an Ally account holder, you won’t have to worry about any monthly fees or minimum opening deposits.
Since Ally is an online-only bank, there are no local branches in Hawaii. Fortunately, it’s part of the Allpoint ATM network that will give you free access to more than 43,000 Allpoint ATMs. If you do use an out-of-network ATM, the bank will reimburse you up to $10 per month.

First American Trust operates one branch in Honolulu. If you have a particular interest in wealth planning, it should definitely be on your radar. It provides several wealth planning services, such as financial planning, retirement planning, and estate planning for individuals and families.

7. CIT Bank
CIT Bank is a digital bank with several attractive products for Hawaii residents. Savings Connect is a savings account that offers a competitive interest rate you might not be able to find elsewhere.
Another savings account you may want to consider at CIT Bank is the Savings Builder. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the largest bank in Hawaii?
First Hawaiian Bank holds the title as the largest bank in Hawaii, establishing a significant presence with a total of 49 branches scattered across the state. Founded in 1858, it boasts a long history and deep roots in the local community.
Should I choose an online bank or a traditional bank in Hawaii?
An online bank is your best bet if your goal is to land the best interest rate and lowest fees. However, if personalized service is important to you, you’d likely be better off with a traditional bank. Fortunately, most traditional banks offer mobile apps and online portals.
Is a credit union a good option in Hawaii?
If you find a credit union with the ideal loan or the products and services you need and qualify for membership, you may want to join it. But you may find a wider range of offerings at a bank.
Why are there no national banks in Hawaii?
National banks aren’t in the Aloha State due to its small population and the high cost of real estate. Smaller banks are your only option if you live or work in Hawaii. The good news is you’ll find many local banks that offer just as many products and services as big banks.
This article is by freelance writer Roger White and staff writer April Dykman. It originally appeared on Roger’s blog in a different format.
April
As many GRS readers know, last year I quit my job to become a full-time freelancer. The hardest thing about moving on was leaving coworkers like Roger White, a magazine editor and author of the funniest interoffice e-mails ever. Roger and I teamed up to bring you his story about a recent experience paying for an auto repair, along with tactical advice about how to dispute your mechanic bill.
Roger
Our little family was tooling along this year, struggling to stay within our monthly budget while juggling life’s big-ticket items—you know: braces, countless teenage daughter items, summer camp fees times number of children squared, etc., etc.—when the two most feared words in all of suburbia’s lexicon knocked us flat.
Car repair.
Funny thing is, it all started with just a broken brake light. I’m sitting in my wife’s car at a stop light, waiting to turn right, when a smiling woman pulls up next to me and says, “Hey, your right rear light is out. Better get it fixed, ’cause the cops will stop you for that.”
Instant adrenaline panic overdrive. The cops! Where?
Ever since I was a teenager, having a cop stop me for any reason has always struck fear deep in my heart, even when I was doing absolutely nothing wrong. Readers of a certain age will remember the CSNY lyric: “Like looking in my mirror and seeing a police car!”
So the wife and I promptly hightailed it over to our nearest franchise fix-it shop, thinking that a broken rear light costs, what, five bucks maybe?
Hah. The franchise fix-it shop guys saw us coming a mile away. I should have known. I can’t think of any other scenario where I feel so much like a life-sized walking all-day sucker than talking with the mechanic man. I’m thinking I’m not alone on this.
I believe that auto repair types begin sizing you up for the big squeeze the minute you walk in the door.
“Hello, sir, I see you and your wife have a Honda V6.”
“Uh, yes.”
“Does your model have the actuated re-inverter or self-regulating?”
“What?” Off guard, I blurt, “Actuated, I think. Really, we just need a brake light…”
“Uh oh. Actuated.”
(The other guy behind the counter sadly shakes his head at this point. The choreography is keen and well-executed, I must say.)
Still, I play along, because I don’t know enough about cars to bluff them, and they know that I don’t know. Furthermore, I know that they know I don’t know. You know?
Dang, I should have said self-regulating. We’re already off on the wrong foot.
“Well, it may be self-regulating, I’m not sure.”
“No, you said actuated.”
“Is that going to be a problem?” I ask.
“Depends. What are you in for?”
“Busted rear light.”
“Hmmmm.”
More head shaking. Some computer clacking, looking in reference manuals.
We left the car with the fix-it shop crew, said three quick Hail Marios to the Great Grease Gods, hoped and prayed for the best, and went about our day. I tried Googling “re-inverter,” but all I got was something about how to design a death-ray gun. When we got the call that the car was ready, we swallowed our gum, put on our all-day sucker heads, and made our way back to the garage. A different guy behind the counter gave us a bill that was a good 25% over the estimate. On the bill was a hefty item—I kid you not—that was labeled “service fee,” on top of labor, parts, tax, recycling charges, oil disposal fee, and all the rest.
My wife, always the braver of us, questioned this item, noting that the estimate was much less than the sum before us.
“This is way over what you said,” Sue said right out loud, turning all heads in the shop. I cringed. In a western movie, this was one of those moments where the piano player stopped playing and the saloon grew deathly silent. “What is this service charge?”
I expected another stern, condescending talking-to about how variable fluctuations in the world of auto parts derivatives combined with the situation in Libya, hourly swings in crude oil prices, and our particular vehicle’s unfortunate re-inverter configuration all coalesced in the time it took to repair our rear brake light to necessitate an additional service charge. But the guy looked at the bill, looked at my wife, and said, “Huh. Don’t know what that is. I’ll take it off.”
Booiiiinnng. That was the sound of my brain leaping out of my skull and bouncing on the floor. How many people, I wondered as I chased my brain across the floor, pay this “service charge” without a second thought?
April
Repairs are one of the costs that come with car ownership, but it sure is confusing when you don’t speak the lingo. When I go to the repair shop, I’m on the phone with my dad the whole time, repeating everything the mechanic says to my father, then repeating everything my dad says to the mechanic. I should just hand the mechanic my phone and cut myself out of the equation.
Like Roger, I probably wouldn’t dispute my bill, either. I know how anti-GRS that sounds, but I’m being honest. I hate making a scene, and I’m likely to assume it’s my own ignorance about cars that’s the problem, not the service charge.
Obviously, Sue is the one who’s got it right. If a charge looks wrong, you should ask about it. This doesn’t necessarily mean the shop is trying to cheat you — mechanics are human and they can make honest mistakes. How do you make sure you’re being billed fairly? I did some digging and found the following advice for those of us who aren’t so mechanically inclined:
Check to see if your car is under warranty. If it is, you’ll need to take it to the dealer or an authorized repair facility.
Find a good auto shop. Ask coworkers, friends, and neighbors where they take their vehicles for repairs. Is the shop affiliated with AAA or does it have technicians certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)? Do you like the look of the place (clean, organized, etc.)?
Ask for a written estimate before the work starts. It’s not uncommon for the actual bill to be 10-20% higher, or more if the mechanic finds that the problem is more complicated.
Ask for the mechanic to review your bill with you. It might seem tedious, but it can save you money, as Roger found out. Mistakes happen all of the time. Compare the charges with your estimate.
If you have a bad feeling about the work performed, dispute your bill carefully. If you can’t find a resolution, ask for the old parts (should you need evidence) and take your dispute, in writing, through the chain of command. If necessary, you might turn to the Better Business Bureau or, as a last resort, legal action.
Finally, if you’re happy with the service you receive, become a regular, preferably at a local body shop. From Edmunds.com:
“The one-on-one relationship between driver and mechanic that smaller repair shops foster can really help consumers have confidence in both the work that’s performed and in the vehicle itself. Local mechanics are more willing to help you understand how your car performs and what it needs. You can ask to look under the hood or the chassis with your local mechanic, and perhaps learn something about what goes where or why a service needs to be performed.”
In other words, you might feel a little less clueless each time you bring in your car.

Roger
Meanwhile, back at the franchise fix-it shop…
“By the way,” says the mechanic, “you need new struts. They’re bleeding onto your brakes. That’s about $600 without tax.”
Flush with new confidence instilled by wifey, I took my turn. “Oh, no you don’t. I know how you guys operate. Struts. No such thing as struts, I bet.”
I got some looks of approval from some of the other guy customers as we walked out of the shop. I think they were looks of approval, anyway. I had a bit of difficulty getting my all-day sucker-head in the car, but we drove away with a bit of salvaged pride. Struts, indeed.
“Hey, what’s that noise, hon?”

Cons of living in Salisbury, MD
1. Hot and humid summer weather
During the summer, temperatures can rise to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Accompanied by high humidity, that can make the weather feel even hotter and more uncomfortable. The combination of heat and humidity may pose challenges for outdoor activities and make spending time outdoors less enjoyable for those who prefer milder climates. Additionally, the high humidity levels can contribute to feelings of stickiness and make it more difficult to find relief from the heat. That said, residents can find ways to adapt to the weather, such as seeking shade, heatproof your home, and staying hydrated.
2. Scarce public transportation
Salisbury is known to have limited public transportation options, which can be considered a drawback for some residents. The city’s public transportation infrastructure, such as bus systems or trains, may be less extensive than larger metropolitan areas. This limited public transportation can pose challenges for individuals who rely on public transit for daily commuting or prefer to avoid driving. It may require residents to own a car or rely on alternative modes of transportation, which can add to the cost of living and potentially contribute to traffic congestion during peak travel times.
3. Limited job market
The city’s job market is relatively smaller compared to larger metropolitan areas, which can result in a more competitive landscape for jobseekers. The range of industries and career paths available may be more limited, particularly in specialized fields. This can make it challenging for individuals seeking employment that aligns with their professional aspirations or expertise. However, it’s worth noting that the job market can vary depending on individual skills, qualifications, and the industry one is pursuing.
4. Potential impact from hurricanes and coastal storms
Located along the Eastern Shore of Maryland and close to the coast, Salisbury is susceptible to severe weather events. Hurricanes and tropical storms can bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and the risk of flooding, posing a threat to property, infrastructure, and personal safety. These natural occurrences may lead to disruptions in daily life, and the need to take precautionary measures to safeguard one’s home.
5. Lack of major professional sports teams
Salisbury is only known for the Delmarva Shorebirds, part of the Carolina League for baseball. This limited professional presence can diminish the excitement and camaraderie that come with supporting local sports teams and enjoying the electric atmosphere of a stadium or arena.

Whether Salisbury, MD, is a good place to live depends on individual preferences, priorities, and lifestyle choices. The city offers several advantages, including affordable housing costs, access to beautiful coastal scenery, and proximity to major cities. What we didn’t like about it
When using the Plant Pots Set of 3 Pack 10 inch, we noticed a few aspects that could be improved. Firstly, the imitation wine barrel design was a bit too artificial, making it look a bit cheap and not as realistic as we would have liked. Additionally, the plastic material was not as durable as we had hoped, and we noticed some cracking after just a few weeks of use. While the drainage holes and saucer were appreciated, we felt that the overall quality of the pots could be improved.
To make the Plant Pots Set of 3 Pack 10 inch even better, we suggest using a more realistic and natural-looking design that is more in line with the aesthetic of a real wine barrel. Additionally, using a more durable material would help to prevent cracking and ensure that the pots last for a longer period of time. What we didn’t like about it
When it comes to the HC Companies 20 Inch Eclipse Round Planter with Saucer, we were disappointed by the lack of drainage holes. Without proper drainage, excess water can accumulate at the bottom of the pot, potentially drowning your plants or causing root rot. While the saucer is a nice addition, it doesn’t necessarily solve the drainage problem. Additionally, the plastic material of the pot can feel flimsy and cheap. We recommend looking for a planter with adequate drainage and a sturdier construction.

What we didn’t like about it
Although the Classic Home and Garden 72 Whiskey Barrel is a great addition to any garden or patio, there were a few aspects that we didn’t like. First, the barrel is a bit smaller than expected. At 15 inches, it may not fit larger plants or flowers. Additionally, the distressed oak finish wasn’t as authentic as we had hoped. The coloring appeared a bit too uniform and lacked the natural variation of real oak wood.
To improve the product, we suggest offering larger size options for those who want to plant bigger flowers or plants. Additionally, the distressed oak finish could benefit from more individualized distressing to create a more genuine appearance. Despite these drawbacks, the Whiskey Barrel Classic does have its positives, such as its durability and unique design.

What we didn’t like about it

Firstly, the plant arrived with some yellowing leaves, which was disappointing considering the price point. Additionally, the mid-century modern planter and stand that come with the plant are not as sturdy as we would have liked. While they look nice, they wobble easily and don’t feel very secure.
To improve the product, we suggest that Costa Farms pays more attention to the quality of the plants they ship out. Firstly, the set is not made from the most durable materials, which can make it susceptible to damage over time. Additionally, the planter tray isn’t waterproof, which can lead to water damage on surfaces it’s placed on. Lastly, the planters themselves are on the smaller side, which may not be sufficient for those who want to grow larger herbs or plants. We recommend providing more detailed instructions or a care guide to ensure the longevity of the plant. Overall, while the plant itself is lovely, we suggest that those looking for a larger indoor plant explore other options.
Buyers Guide

1. Size: The size of your planter will depend on the size of the plant you want to grow and the space you have available. Make sure to measure both the plant and the area where you plan to place the planter to ensure a good fit.
2. Material: Planters come in a variety of materials, including ceramic, metal, plastic, and wood. Consider the aesthetic you’re going for, as well as the durability and maintenance requirements of each material.
3. Drainage: Proper drainage is essential for keeping your plants healthy. Look for planters with drainage holes or consider adding your own if the planter doesn’t come with them.
4. Style: Planters come in a wide range of styles, from modern and sleek to rustic and charming. Consider the overall aesthetic of your space and choose a planter that complements it.
5. Budget: Planters can range in price from a few dollars to several hundred, so it’s important to set a budget before you start shopping. Keep in mind that investing in a high-quality planter can save you money in the long run by ensuring the health and longevity of your plants.

FAQ
Q: How do I choose the right planter for my plants?
A: When choosing a planter, consider the following three criteria: size, material, and drainage. First, make sure the planter is the appropriate size for your plant, allowing enough room for it to grow. Second, choose a material that will suit your plant’s needs – for example, terracotta is great for plants that require a dry soil environment. Finally, ensure the planter has adequate drainage holes to prevent water buildup, which can harm your plants.
Q: Can I use any type of planter for indoor plants?
A: While many types of planters can be used for indoor plants, it’s important to choose one that’s appropriate for your plant’s specific needs. Consider the amount of light and humidity in the room, as well as your plant’s size and watering requirements.
Q: What are some benefits of using self-watering planters?
A: Self-watering planters can be a great option for those who don’t have the time or ability to water their plants regularly. These planters have a built-in reservoir that provides water to the plant as needed, allowing for longer periods between watering. Additionally, self-watering planters can help prevent overwatering, which can be damaging to your plants.
Q: Are there any eco-friendly options for planters?
A: Yes! There are many eco-friendly options for planters, such as those made from recycled materials or natural fibers. Additionally, you can consider repurposing items such as old teapots or mason jars to use as planters.
Q: How can I choose a planter that will complement my home decor?
A: When choosing a planter, consider the style of your home and the aesthetic you’re going for. If you have a modern, minimalist home, a simple white ceramic planter may be a good option. If you prefer a more bohemian look, a woven basket planter could be a great choice. Ultimately, choose a planter that you love and that will bring joy to your space.

While money may not be everything, there’s no denying that having plenty of money gives you more options, and offers access to lifestyles that are out of reach for those with more limited resources. But what if you don’t have a lot of money? Can you still look like you do? The answer is yes. In this article, we’ll delve into some ways people look rich even if they aren’t.
1. Luxury Accessories
Wearing simple clothes made with good quality is one way of appearing better off than you are. Lots of name-brand or quality clothes can be found second-hand, on thrifting websites, or marked down when they’re out of season. Another option is to have luxury and name brand accessories: you could save up for an expensive watch, sunglasses, or purse. Just a few accessories can elevate your whole outfit and give the impression of wealth even if the rest of your appearance is unremarkable.
One Redditor commented, “Overrated expensive clothes. Mark Zuckerberg wears a t-shirt and jeans on an ordinary day.”
2. Pointless Loans
Taking Taking loans to look rich is the worst and most dangerous way to look rich because it can lead you to financial trouble, can easily land you in jail, and the stress of loads or credit card debt can cause health problems such as stress, anxiety, and depression. Taking out loans to fund a lavish lifestyle can create the illusion of wealth and furnish you with some expensive personal property, but it’s a risky strategy that can lead to debt and financial instability.
3. Expensive Groceries
While some people may believe that buying groceries at expensive stores is a way to look rich, it’s not a recommended approach. Despite the premium products offered by high-end grocery stores, they come with higher price tags that can quickly strain your budget. Instead, with a little practice and skill, you can learn to make great foods with the same ingredients at a cheaper price, using food from regular grocery stores and just one or two expensive ingredients. Prioritizing budget and health needs, shopping smartly, and seeking out deals and discounts where possible are better strategies for achieving financial stability and good nutrition.
One Redditor said, “I have a friend who is thousands of dollars in debt and she will only shop at expensive grocery stores, buy organic foods, and only buy name-brand foods/ items. She refuses to listen to me when I tell her to buy store brands and shop at places like Aldi/ TJ.”
4. Expensive Restaurants
Going to expensive restaurants is a common way for people to create the impression of wealth, and it makes sense because expensive restaurants have luxurious surroundings and high class wait staff in addition to the good food. But despite all that, expensive restaurants get very pricey, very quickly. While some people may associate fine dining with affluence, others may see it as an indulgent and unnecessary expense.
Cooking at home can also be a more cost-effective and healthier option, as it allows for greater control over ingredients and portion sizes. Or simply dine out less often, and use the money you’ve saved by cooking for yourself to afford the occasional dinner at a fancier place.
5. Luxury Cars
Driving luxury cars that you can’t afford in order to look rich is not a wise or sustainable way to manage your finances. It may create a false impression of wealth or status, but ultimately, cars are a depreciating asset and you’ll be paying for maintenance no matter which vehicle you own. Instead of focusing on material possessions and trying to impress others, prioritize financial responsibility and drive something which won’t cost you more than you can afford. If you are considering taking on significant debt to maintain the appearance of wealth, it’s important to reconsider your priorities and focus on building a strong financial foundation for yourself.
6. Expensive Tech
Technology has become an integral part of daily life and using expensive gadgets and devices is a popular way to create an impression of wealth. However, it’s crucial to understand that unless you have a way to pay for your expensive phone, computer, etc., it’s really not sustainable nor healthy for showcasing your financial status. Buying pricey technology may give you a temporary ego boost, it’s not an authentic way to display one’s wealth.
7. Excessive Gambling
Using excessive gambling as a means to appear wealthy is both impractical and generally harmful. Gambling can be an enjoyable form of entertainment, but it should be practiced in moderation and with responsible limits. When gambling becomes excessive, it can result in financial difficulties and addiction. This behavior does not genuinely showcase one’s wealth, instead, it can lead to significant financial losses and a damaged reputation. Additionally, it can impact personal relationships, work productivity, and overall mental and emotional well-being.
8. Upscale Neighborhood
Living in an expensive neighborhood is a widespread trend, but it is not a sustainable or healthy if you’re just doing it to appear well off. Buying a house you can’t afford is a very risky situation, and it’s tough to get out of. It’s crucial to make wise financial decisions based on personal needs and priorities. While living in an upscale neighborhood can provide a social status and prestige, it should not be the sole basis for one’s self-worth.
9. Good Haircut
Beyond just buying expensive products, something as simple as having a really well-styled haircut and good personal grooming can make you appear better off than you are. Get to know a good hair stylist, and then practice styling your hair at home until you’re able to do it well. Keeping your personal appearance clean, simple and elegant can go a long ways towards helping people perceive you as well-off.
10. Presenting Yourself with Poise
And last but not least something as simple as having good poise when you meet people, interact with coworkers, and talk with new friends can help others to perceive you as having more money than you do. Having good posture and acting with quiet confidence tends to make people think you are a confident person, and can even give people the idea that you have plenty of money. Practice walking with good posture, and having open, friendly mannerisms when you converse with others. Your poise and confidence will have people believe that you’ve never wanted for anything a day in your life.

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend.
We didn’t do a whole lot, but it was a nice relaxing weekend.
Our good friends (W has been good friends with the guy since first grade) are getting married this Friday and decided to plan a quick wedding so we have a lot to do this week to get ready for that and it’ll be a lot of fun!
I booked our engagement photography last week. She takes great photos and I’ve been stalking her wedding website and Facebook for years now so I’m glad I was able to book with her! We are of course taking our engagement photos with our dogs too and I’m really looking forward to it. W is really not looking forward to taking photos. Anyone else had this problem? I feel like I can’t convince him to do this at all haha. I’ve already paid though and it’s $400 for the engagement photos so he will for sure be coming.
Lately I’ve been talking a lot about how we want a new house. We figured that until we actually find the house and are 100% about to buy, then we really need to be doing little things around our house until then to prepare and not be overwhelmed at one time. Also, why not make our house perfect for while we’re leaving here? So we have a long list of things that we need to do. This past weekend I cleaned out my closet and had 2 large trash bags full of garbage to throw away. And this was pure trash: receipts, plastic bags, tags, paper, etc.
This upcoming weekend I plan on de-cluttering everything and getting rid of clothes in my closet. Hopefully I can actually get rid of some clothes and possibly make some extra money too!
So, quick question for all of you:What thing around your house did you improve before you tried selling it? I’m looking for all tips as we want to sell our house for as much as we can and also as quickly as we can. I have a long post dedicated to this in the future but am wondering if there’s anything that I’m leaving out!
I paid off one of my student loans, and it was my only private student loan! Back in 2007 I took out the loan and it totaled $6,000. I paid off the rest the other day and it looks like I accidentally overpaid by $0.01! It’s a nice feeling and I never honestly thought that eliminating student loans would be this exhilarating haha.
Spending
I don’t think we bought anything in the past week, at least nothing that I can think of. We have been doing really good with this and I’m proud. I guess you could of course count for engagement photography that I paid for, but I did budget for that awhile ago.
Also, we have some major expenses coming up. We are paying for W’s parents to go on a vacation. It’s going to be a present to them for being such great people and we’re really hoping that they enjoy it. We’ve saved up for quite some time and are covering the airfare and all-inclusive hotel. I don’t think they’ve ever been to the Caribbean so I’m super excited for them!
Extra Income (does not include salary from our jobs)
I received $823 in payments in the past week. Still waiting on some more payments so I hope they come through soon.
Affiliate income is still my number 1 goal right now. I’m really working on that and hopefully it’ll be around 50% or more of my total extra income each month. Eventually though, my new side hustle will completely take over and hopefully become a larger part of my income. This side hustle will eventually take up a ton of time.
I wish I could tell you guys more! A couple of you asked me if it’s related to blogging, and it’s not at all. It is not related to writing, blogging, advertising, etc. Something completely new! If anyone wants to guess, I’ll take all guesses and confess if someone actually does come up with the right answer. And, if you already know what the new plan is, please don’t tell! I already told a couple of you. 🙂
Food
We haven’t had a meal plan in forever, but we have been doing great with eating at home. We made dinner 5 days last week. The two days that we did eat out were super cheap. Thankfully our 2 favorite restaurants are right next door to each other and just right down the street. They are both super cheap and we spent a total of $35 on going out to restaurants to eat. That’s pretty cheap to me, less than $20 for each night!
We want to continue to eat in as much as we can. We have really enjoyed it. We have more time to relax and hang out since we aren’t in a busy restaurant.
Wedding
As I said above, we booked our engagement photography to be done. We’re not taking them until May because we want everything to be blooming and colorful. Our photos will be a start park with lots of great hiking and pretty cliffs. Sounds like a disaster once you mix heels, dresses and 2 dogs but oh well 🙂
Being healthy
Having the treadmill in our basement has been great so far. I’ve run on it three times in the past week and it’s been great. I’m going to try and at least fit in a couple of miles here and there whenever I have 10 or 20 minutes to spare also.
How’s your spending, working out and extra income going?
