How much do you need to retire? The usual suggestion provided by financial planners and retirement calculators is 75% to 85% (roughly 80%) of your pre-retirement income. But is that really enough money to retire with security? Does the 80% rule-of-thumb work under all circumstances, or is it merely a rough approximation to simplify the retirement planning process? Let’s examine these issues more closely…
Is 80% Of Pre-Retirement Spending A Realistic Budget?
The basis for the 80% spending rule is that your living expenses are expected to decline once you retire thus your spending should decrease without forcing you to lower your lifestyle. For example, you’ll no longer need to purchase expensive professional clothing and your transportation costs will drop without a daily commute to work. Additionally, your children will probably be grown and out of the house, and you will no longer have to fund your retirement savings. You may even have your home paid in full thus eliminating your mortgage payment and you may be in a lower tax bracket. All these factors indicate your spending should drop during retirement.
Unfortunately, the issue is not as clear as it might appear on the surface. The analysis above assumes certain types of spending will decrease while all other spending remains the same. That is not realistic. For example, many new retirees like to hit the open road and see the world thus increasing their travel budgets. Similarly, it is the rare retiree who does not face rising health care costs.
In short, the 80% rule of thumb is a generalization designed to simplify the retirement planning process at the expense of accuracy. It makes many assumptions about your future that may not be true for you. It is no substitute for making a real budget based on your actual plans for retirement, and it could actually jeopardize your financial security. To make this point clear we will examine five reasons why your expenses may actually increase during retirement instead of decrease…
Longer And More Active Retirements
People are living longer and more active retirement lifestyles than ever before. Increasing longevity has made 60 the new 40. If you plan an early retirement so you can sail around the world or take frequent wine-tasting trips to France and Italy, the cost of those leisure activities and travel can easily offset any decrease in work-related expenses. Alternatively, if you are planning an early retirement it will mean you need more money to support a longer life of leisure. A longer retirement means you can’t spend as much investment principal each month, and a more active retirement means you need more savings and income to support a more expensive lifestyle.
Health Care In Retirement
Health care costs have risen steadily and there is every reason to believe that trend will continue. Additionally, your chances of serious illness or need for expensive medications increases with age. A single medical event can be devastating to your retirement savings if you are not prepared, and if you don’t have long term care insurance then assisted living or nursing home expenses can deplete your retirement savings.
Other Ways Expenses Could Rise
Maybe you haven’t paid off your house, or possibly you took out a home equity loan to remodel. The 80% rule-of-thumb assumes you no longer support dependents, but you may still be paying a child’s college expenses. Alternatively, you might be caring for an aging parent who is living in your home. These expenses certainly won’t go away just because you retire.
Lower Taxes May Be Wrong
The assumption that your taxes will drop during retirement could be totally incorrect. After all, if your retirement income level is similar to pre-retirement income then where will the tax relief come from? In addition, growing budget deficits at all levels of government combined with entitlement program problems indicates a greater likelihood of rising tax rates rather than falling tax rates. In short, the idea that your tax rate will decrease during retirement may turn out to be just the opposite.
Spending Statistics Misrepresent Real Spending
Many research studies have been conducted on the spending patterns of the elderly. One of the more famous studies comes from Ty Bernicke in the Journal of Financial Planning where he cites numbers from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Consumer Expenditure Survey indicating that retirees spend less as they age. A typical 75-year-old spends about half as much as the average 45-to-54-year-old. Overall, spending declines about 25% each decade from age 55 to 75.
This appears to be conclusive evidence that spending does in fact decline with age during retirement; however, there are a couple of major flaws in the research. The first problem results from these figures failing to include long term care costs. You can solve that problem with insurance but there is no solution to the next problem…
Bernicke’s analysis was based on a snapshot in time thus it only compares nominal dollar spending and does not adjust for inflation. In other words, it compares the spending habits of a 75 year old today to the spending habits of a 45 year old on the same day. It does not track a 45 year old over a period of 30 years to determine if their spending decreases with time as the study would imply. Instead, it compares the two different groups at a single point in time.
The problem with this approach is it fails to adjust spending for inflation. A mere 3% inflation will double spending in just 25 years which will more than offset the expected reduction claimed by Bernicke’s research. In fact, it could potentially cause an increase in spending – contrary to what his research would imply.
A More Accurate Approach For Determining How Much Money You Need To Retire
In summary, you would be wise to forget the oversimplified rules of thumb when trying to figure out how much money to retire. Your financial security is at stake and you deserve better. Instead, it is far more prudent to develop a realistic budget for your retirement spending based on your actual retirement plans. You don’t have to make it perfect because nobody can predict the future, but you do want to make it as accurate as you can.
A personal budget for retirement is necessary because your life situation is unique. Only you know the financial situation facing your maturing children and aging parents that might affect your budget. Only you know about your globetrotting plans to travel the world for a decade or two before slowing down. That means you will need to add that expense into your budget for a decade or two before removing it. If you have long term care insurance then add the premiums as an expense into your budget, and if you don’t then build a cushion into your savings for self-insurance. In short, develop a plan for retirement and then develop a budget to reflect your plan.
When you complete the budgeting process you may be happily surprised to learn you only need 60% of pre-retirement income making you better off than expected – or your dreams could require 140% of pre-retirement income causing a challenge. This is key to your financial security because the difference between these two numbers can either break the back of your retirement savings or make a meager nest egg look plentiful. Because the range of outcomes is so wide and the stakes are so high, the only realistic solution is to replace the rule of thumb with a carefully developed retirement budget based on your unique needs to figure out how much you really need for retirement.
It is the only prudent thing to do.

The Christmas season is here and you want fun ideas to do!
To help make your life easier this year, I created a bucket list full of over 100 activities. You can use it as an actual bucket list or just enjoy scrolling through some fun things to do with friends and family before December 25th.
You will find everything from decorating ideas for your home (from simple snowflakes that are easy enough for kids to make) all the way to DIY recipes for Christmas treats.
Who doesn’t love a good list?
This Christmas bucket list is things you can do with your family around the Christmas season to make it more lively and enjoyable.
I made this list for my own kids, but I thought I would share it with you to use it too!
How can you make your Christmas bucket list more fun?
There are many different ways to make your Christmas bucket list more fun.
One way is to focus on new activities that you haven’t done before. Another way is to add food-related activities, which always make Christmas special.
You can also try incorporating some outdoor activities, even if it’s just for a (snowy) day.
And don’t forget about family traditions! They’re a big part of the holidays and can really enhance the experience.
No matter what you do, make sure you enjoy yourself (and not stress yourself out)! The holidays are a time for celebration and should be spent with loved ones. Merry Christmas!
Memorable Christmas Bucket List
While we love the classic Christmas bucket lists, we also are always looking for unique ideas to add to your holiday bucket list.
Some of these out-of-the-box ideas are pretty sweet and you may want to do them year and year again.
You can find everything from baking cookies to attending a German market to spending Christmas at a lodge. No matter what you choose, make sure you keep in touch with your family and friends during the holidays.
1. Go to Mexico. This is one of our Christmas traditions! There is something relaxing about enjoying the beach while Felix Navidad is playing in the background. (Gift hint… all of the beach gifts can be given to be used on the trip.)

KEY TIP… Plan Your Day Ahead: What are you going to do tomorrow?
How can you make your Christmas bucket list more meaningful?
When it comes to the holidays, many people want to do as much as they can.
The Christmas bucket list is often a great way to make sure that you’re able to check off all of the items on your wish list. But sometimes, we can become overwhelmed by all of the things that we want to do. This year, consider making your bucket list more meaningful by doing activities that will bring you happiness and joy.
Idea #1 – Be Happy
One way to make your Christmas bucket list more meaningful is by only including activities that truly make you happy.
For example, if decorating the tree or going shopping for presents isn’t really your thing, then don’t put them down as items that you have to do this year! Instead, focus on doing things like baking cookies with loved ones or taking a walk in the snow.
Idea #2 – Spend Time Together
Another way to make your holiday season more special is by spending time together over a fire. Whether you build one in your backyard or take advantage of one at a local park, this is a great opportunity for conversation and reflection.
Consider lighting the fireplace and reading a good book together–or having some deep conversations about what’s been going on in each other’s lives!
Idea #3 – Make an Advent Calendar
Making your own advent calendar is a fun way to get into the Christmas spirit. You can make it as simple or as complex as you want, but the key is to include activities that will get you excited for the holiday season.
For example, one day you might do an act of service for someone else, and on another day you might bake cookies!
Now, start brainstorming ideas with your family and friends.
Idea #4 – Get Prepared
Take time to figure out what kind of holiday experience you want, which helps narrow down the items on your bucket list.
Another way to make your Christmas bucket list more special is by preparing for Christmas Eve the night before. One great idea is to create a box filled with all of the things you’ll need for the following day. This could include pajamas, breakfast foods, and even some presents!
Use the printable to prioritize which activities your family would like to do during the holidays.
Idea #5 – Make it Personal
Finally, why not add a personal touch to your Christmas this year?
Make your list as personal and meaningful to you as possible by only including activities that are important.
Instead of using store-bought wreaths and ornaments, try making them yourself! There are endless possibilities when it comes to homemade decorations, so get creative and have some fun!

An unfamiliar city can be more than a little unnerving. Getting to know the area while simultaneously trying to make friends can be scary. Joining a volunteer organization can help you achieve both goals at once.
Volunteering is not only rewarding, but it also gives you a chance to meet other people in your area and build networks. If you’re renting in a new city, networking is an important way to make friends and contacts. Familiar faces will make you feel more at home.
There are numerous ways to get involved with charity organizations, non-profit foundations, or religious groups. Check out the information below on how to find volunteer opportunities, no matter where you call home.
Think about what kind of activities you enjoy, and look for similar volunteering events or organizations. If you find the list growing too long, limit your possible choices to the top five.
It’s also a good idea, but certainly not necessary, to tie in your skill-set with a charity event. Many organizations need assistance building new homes, tending to the elderly, painting over graffiti, or raising money for a cause. There are many volunteer opportunities for just about everyone to lend a helping hand.
Disease can cause human suffering, but it also brings people together. Volunteers offer significant contribution through their assistance and compassionate outlook of the struggle with Alzheimer’s, breast cancer, HIV/AIDS and other deadly diseases.
Nearly every disease has an opportunity for involvement. For example, the National Breast Cancer Association encourages volunteers to help host fundraisers to raise money in the fight against breast cancer. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society also allows you to search for local volunteer opportunities online. No matter that the disease, there’s probably something going on in your area. If there are no events, why not take the initiative as a new renter and set something up?
Are you an animal lover? The best option is to volunteer at your local shelter. Many of these shelters are connected to the Animal Humane Society, which offers plenty of ways to care for a variety of different animals. Inside the shelter, you’ll find opportunities to help not only cats and dogs, but also rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles, pot-belly pigs and other animals in need of assistance. You can take dogs on walks, or assist with nail clipping, feeding, bathing or grooming. Even if your rental policy doesn’t permit pets, caring for these animals lets you connect them with other adoption opportunities. Your furry friends will definitely thank you for your hard work.
Another way to impact the community and become familiar with the city is at your local volunteer fire or emergency medical service department. These departments are active throughout many areas of the country. Not only will you have the opportunity to save lives, but you will build camaraderie with other local volunteers.
Check with your local hospital to see if they know of any programs requiring volunteer assistance. You might be directed to a nursing home needing you to come in weekly to read to the elderly, or you might be asked to assist with a hospital’s fundraising project.
If you enjoy sports or the great outdoors, there are plenty of ways to be active, have fun, and help out your neighbors. For starters, youth sport leagues often need coaches and assistant coaches to help develop training programs, and teach kids about basic skills and teamwork. If you’re a parent, this is a fantastic way to participate in your kid’s life and help his or her teammates.
The Boy and Girl Scouts as well as other groups have local chapters around the country, and they’re often looking for scout leaders and other volunteers to help young people learn values, earn an appreciation of the outdoors, and learn about civic participation. These types of organizations are a great way to give back to the community.
Many people want to help those experiencing poverty or homelessness, as they are often the most vulnerable members of society. Organizations like Habitat for Humanity help build homes for those who are homeless or on a low-income. Local soup kitchens, homeless shelters and food pantries are always looking for new volunteers as well, which provide you with endless ways to support those facing poverty.
Do you know of a special charity or volunteer organization you want the world to know about? Let us know in the comments or share with everyone via Twitter, and spread the good word!
If you’ve ever shopped for life insurance, then you know that there can be some key variables to consider to determine whether you have the proper type and amount of coverage.
For example, knowing how much your policy’s proceeds should be can be beneficial, as you don’t want to underinsure and leave your loved ones with a financial burden, or over-insure and end up paying more than you need.
When shopping for the right life insurance policy, it is also imperative that you review the company that you are considering purchasing through, as you will want to know that it is stable and safe financially and that it has a good reputation for paying out its policyholder claims. One life insurer that has a long standing reputation – and is well-known in the insurance marketplace – is Bankers Life Insurance Company.
The History of Bankers Life Insurance Company
Bankers Life Insurance Company – also commonly referred to as simply BLIC – was initially founded in 1976 – and, while it may not be one of the older insurance carriers in the U.S., it has proven itself to be a viable player in the life insurance and annuity arena. Bankers Life is headquartered in St. Petersburg, Florida. The company does business in all 50 of the U.S. states, although it does business as Western Bankers Life Insurance Company in the state of Texas. It is a subsidiary of Global Bankers Insurance Group Company.
With $1.2 billion of assets under management, Global Bankers continues to deliver on its unique investment strategy, too, with sustainable and profitable growth. Global Bankers is itself a subsidiary of another company, Eli Global, LLC. Founded in 1991, Eli Global is a privately held consortium of more than 50 independent businesses that serve the needs of its clients in industries such as insurance, financial services, health care services, revenue cycle management, information technology, marketing and sales, publishing, distribution, market research, and business information.
Bankers Life Insurance Company Review
Bankers Life Insurance Company’s strategic use of reinsurance to reduce liability and add capital and surplus, as well as its commitment to disciplined management of company expenses, has positioned this insurance carrier to continue growing its business for years to come.
As of year-end 2016, Bankers Life has more than $447 million in assets and $27.3 million in statutory surplus. Both figures represent a considerable increase over those of just one year prior.
Insurer Ratings and Better Business Bureau (BBB) Grade
The Bankers Life Insurance Company investment policy is predicated upon ultimate protection and providing stable, predictable income to the company’s policyholders. Based on its overall financial stability and reputation for paying out its policyholders’ claims, Bankers Life Insurance Company has a grade of B (Stable) from A.M. Best Company.
Life Insurance Coverage Offered Through Bankers Life Insurance Company
Bankers Life Insurance Company does not provide any of the traditional life insurance products such as term, whole life, universal life, or variable life insurance coverage. Rather, it focuses more on the retirement income market through annuities.
Other Products and Services Offered
With the number one concern on the minds of retirees today is running out of income, the focus of many life insurance carriers today – as well as other financial companies – has been offering retirement annuities. One reason for this is because annuities can provide the ability to obtain a guaranteed lifetime income stream – regardless of how long a person lives. (Some annuities will also pay out income to a second individual, such as a spouse or partner, for as long as that person lives, too).
Bankers Life Insurance Company offers several annuity options. These include the following:
SPDA-5
The SPDA-5 is a five-year tax deferred guaranteed return annuity. With this annuity, the interest rate is guaranteed for five years. And, by choosing the interest rate lock, the annuitant will qualify for an interest rate lock for 45 days on incoming transfers from other financial institutions.
The interest on this annuity will begin 30 days after the policy issue – or if requested, after the policy issue date the payments will be made monthly starting one month after the monthly interest option effective date. The interest is credited daily, and it is compounded annually to yield the guaranteed rate.
This annuity also offers a nursing home care waiver whereby if a covered condition occurs to the annuitant, the policyholder may withdraw up to 50 percent of the accumulated contract value without incurring a withdrawal charge. (Otherwise, there can be a withdrawal fee for any money taken out more than 10 percent, during the first six years).
In this case, a covered condition is defined as confinement in a residential care facility or a skilled nursing home facility for at least 90 consecutive days. The annuity contract must also be in force for at least 90 days for this to be covered.
The SPDA-5 annuity is available to applicants who are between the ages of 0 to 85 years, and it has a minimum premium requirement of at least $10,000 – regardless of whether the account is qualified or non-qualified.
SPDA-7
With the Bankers Life Insurance Company’s SPDA-7 annuity, the interest rate is guaranteed for seven years. This annuity also requires a minimum premium of $10,000, and it is open to those who are between age 0 and 85 years. This annuity will also qualify for an interest rate lock of 45 days on incoming transfers from other financial institutions.
If the policy owner is required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) on a tax-qualified annuity, the withdrawal charges will be waived on any RMD amount that exceeds the 10 percent free withdrawal provision. Any withdrawal that is requested more than that allowed under one of the penalty-free withdrawal options is subject to the following withdrawal charges (which may vary by state):

As with the SPDA-5 annuity, the SPDA-7 also has a nursing home waiver option, whereby if a covered condition is to occur to the annuitant, the policy owner may withdraw up to 50 percent of the accumulated contract value without incurring a withdrawal charge. A covered condition, in this case, is defined as confinement in a residential care facility or skilled nursing facility for at least 90 days. The annuity contract must be in force for at least 90 days to become covered.
SPIA
The SPIA annuity is also available through Bankers Life Insurance Company. An SPIA – or a single premium immediate annuity – create instant income during retirement through taking a lump sum of money and converting it into regular payments that continue for a specified period, or for the lifetime of the insured.
An SPIA annuity could be a viable option for someone seeking an excellent return on their money that he or she will not outlive and does not want to worry about how to invest the money. The benefits of the SPIA annuity will also include the tax deferral that is derived from receiving income in payments instead of in one large lump sum.
The SPIA annuity option from Bankers Life allows the policy owner to elect to receive either monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual payments over the course of five to twenty years – which will enable the annuitant to customize the size and the frequency of the income payments.
These income payments are fully guaranteed for the period that is elected – even if it is for the annuitant’s full lifetime. The payments will not fluctuate, so the annuitant can have the peace of mind in knowing that his or her retirement income will be stable.
If the annuitant dies while he or she is still receiving income payments from the SPIA annuity, and provided that these payments are a non-life only option, a named beneficiary (or beneficiaries) will have a few options. They may receive the remaining payments that left on the annuity’s income payment schedule, or, they may elect to receive the remaining account value as a commuted lump sum.
This annuity option is available to those who are up to age 90 (as of his or her last birthday) as the annuitant, and policy owners who are at least age 18 or over. The annuity has a minimum premium amount of $10,000 and a maximum premium amount of $500,000 (unless the annuity holder obtains home office approval from Bankers Life Insurance Company).
The various income payout options and parameters for the SPIA include the following:
Lifetime Income – ages 75 and below
Life Income with Period Certain – 5, 7, 10, 15, or 20 years
Income for a Fixed Period – 5 to 20 years
Joint Life Income – 100 percent or 66 2/3 percent to the survivor
Interest Plus
The Interest Plus annuity from Bankers Life Insurance Company is designed for the individual who desires a higher than average rate of return, but with the ability to access funds for any reason or amount – without incurring an excessive surrender charge. By paying an upfront fee, the annuity owner will receive a large amount of flexibility.
The issue ages on this annuity are 0 to 90 years for non-qualified contracts, and 0 to 65 on qualified contracts. The minimum premium amount is $10,000, and the maximum is $500,000 without getting home office approval.
Annuity holders who have the Interest Plus annuity are permitted to access unlimited withdrawals – with the minimum being $1,000 – of their accumulated accounts for any reason after the annuity has been issued. Each of these withdrawals, however, will be subject to a 1 percent redemption fee schedule. The withdrawal fee schedule on the Interest Plus annuity is as follows:

Another popular tradition is saying “Merry Christmas” to one another. This usually happens when family members gather together to celebrate the holiday.
Families come from all over to spend time with each other on Christmas day, and the joyous atmosphere is something that can’t be replicated any other time of year.
What do people typically eat on Christmas day?
Christmas is a time when many people come together to celebrate. While the exact traditions may vary, there are some acts that remain the same. For example, many people will eat turkey, mashed potatoes, and cookies on Christmas day (source).
If you’re looking to give back to your local community this Christmas, consider donating to your local food bank. Many food banks are able to help those in need during the holiday season and beyond.

If you have someone counting on you financially – or even if there is someone in your life who may be required to pay off your debts and your final expenses in case of the unexpected – then you likely need to have life insurance.
You can use life insurance proceeds for any number of circumstances, such as paying off a home mortgage and credit card debt, as well as replacing lost income. Replacing lost income ensures loved ones can continue to pay their everyday living costs, in turn, keeping those you care about from financial hardship.
When you are shopping for life insurance, you want to make sure that you choose the right type and amount of coverage for your specific needs. You should also ensure that the life insurance carrier you obtain the policy from is reliable and stable financially so that your loved ones can be more assured that they will get the funds that are owed to them. One insurer that fits these criteria is the Baltimore Life Insurance Company.
The History of The Baltimore Life Insurance Company
The Baltimore Life Insurance Company was initially founded back in 1882, as The Baltimore Mutual Aid Society of Baltimore City. Five men began the company with a starting sum of $260.93 in company asset. At that time in U.S. history, many people purchased life insurance coverage so that they or a loved one would not have to buried in a potter’s field, as versus replacing lost income of a breadwinner.
While it took several years for the company to start growing, by the year 1900, it was starting to pick up steam. At that time, the company’s name was also changed to The Baltimore Life Insurance Company of Baltimore City.
Over the years, the Baltimore Life Insurance Company has held steady through several recessions, and even depressions, in the United States. But it has persevered. Today, Baltimore Life Insurance Company insures more than 300,000 policy holders – both families and businesses – in communities across the country.
With its home office now located in Owings Mills, Maryland, the Baltimore Life Insurance Company operates in 49 of the U.S. states, and in the District of Columbia. The products and services of the Baltimore Life Insurance Company are marketed through 13 different career agency sales groups that operate in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, South Carolina, and West Virginia, as well as through an independent sales division.
The company’s independent marketing organizations’ ability to develop strong relationships with clients is the key to the success of clients as well as the insurer. To achieve this, the Baltimore Life Insurance Company offers extensive support, such as:
A competitive product portfolio
An electronic application and underwriting process (known as INSpeed)
Stellar customer service
The key market segment that the company targets is those who are in middle-class America.
The Baltimore Life Insurance Company Review
As of year-end 2016, the Baltimore Life Insurance Company had invested assets of nearly $1.2 billion – which equates to approximately 4 percent more than year-end 2015, and total assets of $1.241 billion. The company’s surplus stood at more than $81 million, which is a significant increase over the year prior.
The company also increased its new business sales in 2016, by 8 percent over its 2015 figures. Given its normalized sales and its death claims, the Baltimore Life Insurance Company continues to demonstrate positive operating income.
Today, just as it was when the company began in 1882, the Baltimore Life Insurance Company serves the mutual interests of its policyholders, its agents, its employees, and the communities around it. Commitment to excellence guides the company’s actions to the following:
Financial discipline
Making a positive difference
Integrity and respect

For example, Bankers Life has been an accredited company through the Better Business Bureau since August 1, 2013, and the BBB has provided this company with a grade of A+ (which is on an overall grade scale of A+ to F).
Over the past three years, Bankers Life has closed out a total of 112 customer complaints (of which 39 have been closed within the previous 12 months). Of the 112 total, 73 were regarding problems with the company’s product and service. 15 had to do with delivery issues, 12 were concerning billing and collection issues, 11 were related to advertising and sales issues, and one had to do with the company’s guarantee issues.
Colonial Penn Life Insurance Company has an A- rating from the Better Business Bureau. Within the past 36 months, this CNO Financial subsidiary has closed out a total of five customer complaints. Four of these complaints dealt with problems with the products and services, and the other one was regarding billing/collection issues.
The subsidiaries of CNO Financial (Conseco) offer a wide variety of life insurance coverage. For example, Bankers Life Insurance Company offers both term and permanent life insurance products. With term life, insureds can choose a pre-determined number of years of coverage, such as 5, 10, or 20. The premiums on these policies will remain level throughout the life of the policy.
Bankers Life also offers both whole life and universal life insurance coverage in its permanent life coverage category. With whole life, the premiums will stay level and will never go up (if they are paid on time). The universal life insurance coverage that is offered by Bankers provides more flexibility regarding premium payment and amount. Both policy categories offer guaranteed cash value in the policies. And, this money may be borrowed or withdrawn by the policy holder for any need that he or she sees fit.
Colonial Penn Life Insurance Company has been offering life insurance coverage for more than 50 years. This Conseco / CNO subsidiary provides both term and permanent protection, too. And, with the company’s guaranteed acceptance life insurance, an applicant is guaranteed to be approved for coverage – and there are no medical exams or health questions required for approval. With these permanent life insurance policies, the premium rate will be locked in, and the plan will start to build up cash value after the first year.
The life insurance plans that can be purchased through Colonial Penn offer coverage of up to $50,000 (for both term and whole life coverage). And, individuals may apply for either a term or a whole life policy up to age 75.
Likewise, Washington Mutual Insurance Company also provides an extensive list of life insurance coverage options to choose from. These also include both term and permanent coverage options.
The term policies from Washington Nation can provide coverage for just a few years, or for many years. The monthly premiums will remain level throughout the life of the policy.
Regarding permanent life insurance coverage, Washington Mutual offers both whole life and indexed universal life insurance plans. Whole life policies offer a choice of having a level benefit (where the policy pays out the face amount and any rider benefits to a named beneficiary upon the insured’s death), or a graded benefit (where the policy will pay out a reduced amount of benefit if the insured’s death occurs for reasons other than an accident within the first two policy years).
With an indexed universal life insurance policy through Washington Mutual, there is a death benefit, as well as a cash value component. The growth of the cash inside the policy will have a return that is based on the performance of an underlying market index (such as the S&P 500). If the index performs well, the policy holder can obtain an excellent return for that period. However, if the underlying index performs poorly in a given year, the return will just be credited as a 0% for that time – which essentially allows the protection of the policy holder’s principal).
The indexed universal life policies at Washington Mutual Insurance Company may also allow the insured to access “living benefits” in certain situations. This means that he or she could access the policy’s death benefit proceeds, while still alive, for expenses that are related to a terminal illness diagnosis and confinement in a nursing home.
Burial Insurance
Even if you have all your finances in order, there may still be one area that has been left out – and because of that, it could leave those you care about vulnerable to future financial hardship. That is the payment of final expenses.
Today, the average cost of a funeral is between $8,500 and $10,000. This is especially true when you factor in the price of a memorial services, flowers, and transportation, along with other items such as a burial plot and headstone.
Rather than having your loved ones dip into their savings, or worse, put these expenses on credit when the time comes, you could provide them with the financial gift of a burial insurance policy.
Burial insurance is a type of life insurance that is specifically designed for paying one’s final expenses. Also, often referred to as funeral insurance or final expense insurance, these plans will typically have a benefit amount of between $5,000 and $25,000.
In some cases, an insured will add an amount of coverage so that other unanticipated expenses may also be covered, such as hospice care and end of life hospitalization that is not included in a regular medical insurance policy.
When you are seeking the best burial insurance policy for your needs, several factors should be considered. These include the type and amount of coverage, as well as the insurance carrier that you plan to purchase the coverage through. In this case, you will ideally want the company to be secure and stable financially, and to have a good reputation for paying out its policy holders’ claims. One insurer that meets these criteria is Conseco.

In addition to life insurance protection, the Conseco / CNO Financial subsidiary companies also offer additional financial and insurance related products. These include the following:

Long Term Care Insurance (most long-term care insurance policies will pay out benefits if the insured is receiving qualified care in a facility or their own home)
Washington National Insurance Company
Washington National Insurance Company also offers a variety of different products. These include:
Health Insurance
Workplace Benefits (including term and universal life insurance, hospitalization and ICU coverage, cancer and critical illness insurance, and accident and disability coverage

If your parents are retired or nearing retirement and concerned about their finances, they might float the idea of getting a reverse mortgage past you.
After all, in that commercial, that nice man from Law & Order says that it’s a great way to get supplemental income in retirement.
Unfortunately, there is a great deal that the commercial leaves out.
And these issues are something that the reverse mortgage holder’s family—that is, you—will likely have to deal with.
After all, your parents aren’t getting any younger.
Here is the breakdown of what those in the Sandwich Generation need to know about reverse mortgage disadvantages—before Mom and Dad sign on the dotted line:
How Reverse Mortgages Work
At its core, a reverse mortgage is a way to convert the equity in a home into cash. In order to qualify for a reverse mortgage, the homeowner must be at least 62 years old, must own and live in the home, and must have substantial equity in the home. While lenders do not require that the home be completely paid off, the homeowner must be close to the end of their mortgage term in order for the lender to agree to a reverse mortgage.
With this loan, the lender will pay off whatever remains on the mortgage (if anything), and give the homeowner a payout in one of five ways: Tenure payments are monthly payments that will last for as long as at least one borrower still lives in the home. Term payments are monthly payments for a fixed period. A line of credit will allow the borrower to draw unscheduled payments for any amount whenever needed until the credit limit is maxed out. Finally, modified tenure and modified term payments combine the monthly payment option with the line of credit option.
Unlike a traditional loan, the borrower does not need to make regular payments in installments. Instead, the entire loan plus interest will come due when the borrower passes away, sells the house, or can no longer consider the home a primary residence.
For instance, if an elderly homeowner finds himself needing regular care, permanently moving to a nursing home will mean he has to pay back his reverse mortgage. However, the borrower has 12 months of living elsewhere before the home is no longer considered his primary residence. So a short time in a hospital or nursing home will not mean that the reverse mortgage is due.
One of the big benefits to a reverse mortgage is that the payments you receive from them are not considered taxable income. In addition, the payments will also generally not affect your Social Security or Medicare benefits. On those grounds, a reverse mortgage can seem like a good way for retirees to supplement their retirement income with their home equity without having to downsize or move.
The Fine Print
So far, so good. However, there are several aspects to reverse mortgages that can make them seem like less of a good deal.
First and foremost is the fact that you owe more money through a reverse mortgage as times goes on.
At the end of the loan term, either the borrower or his heirs will have to pay back the amount of the loan—which grows with each payment made to the borrower—plus interest.
As for that interest, while there are some fixed-rate reverse mortgages, the majority of these loans use variable rates. (It is important to note that the usual way of paying off the loan is by selling the house, meaning reverse mortgage holders and their heirs do not actually have to cough up the amount of the loan when it is due, unless they want to keep the house.)
In addition, the entire point of the reverse mortgage is to cash out the equity. That means that the old homestead will have no equity (or very little) left at the end of the loan term. So sale of the house will leave no cash for the heirs.
If the borrower’s heirs are interested in keeping the home, they will have to pay off the loan in order to do so. Most reverse mortgages offer something called a non-recourse clause, which means the borrower cannot owe the lender more than the value of the home when the loan is due and the home is sold. Basically, whatever the home sells for will satisfy the loan. However, heirs who want to keep the home will still have to pay back the loan in full, even if the amount owed is more than the home is worth.
It’s important to remember that reverse mortgages are not free. Just like any mortgage, there are closing costs, including loan origination fees and mortgage insurance premiums. Some lenders also charge servicing fees during the life of the reverse mortgage.
Also, the amount that can be borrowed is dependent on several factors, including the youngest borrower’s age, the interest rate, and the appraised value of the house. So even homes that are worth quite a lot may not provide the kind of reverse mortgage amounts that borrowers are counting on.
Finally—and this can be a real kicker for the adult children of reverse mortgage holders—the homeowner still maintains the title for the house, which means he is still on the hook for maintenance, property taxes, and homeowner’s insurance. In fact, failing to maintain the condition of the house or pay taxes or insurance on it can mean that the loan becomes due. If your parents are having trouble keeping up with their household chores—including home maintenance and bill paying—these sorts of jobs will fall on you.
What Are Reverse Mortgage Disadvantages?
The answer to that depends upon several factors. First of all, your family needs to decide how important it is to keep the house in the family. If your parents are talking about taking a reverse mortgage on the house where you and your siblings were born and where you’ve dreamed of seeing your own grandchildren play in the future, then a reverse mortgage might not be a great idea. Unless you know you will be able to pay back the loan, you should plan on having to sell the house once your parents have entered into a reverse mortgage.
If the home is meaningful to your family, an alternative to a reverse mortgage is for someone in the family to buy the home from your parents and allow them to continue living in it. This will provide them with the equity in their home in a lump sum, and if that equity is $500,000 or less, they can exclude the money from their taxable income. In many ways, this is a win-win, although it does depend on someone in the family having the ability to purchase the house.
Even if you have no particular attachment to your parents’ home, you may want to think carefully about whether or not to pursue a reverse mortgage. Depending on their ability to live independently and keep up with the important tasks of homeownership, a reverse mortgage may or may not be a good idea.
If you have reason to believe that Mom and Dad only have a few years before they will need some serious help, it might make more sense to access the equity in the home by selling it and getting them moved to retirement home or assisted living facility where they will be more comfortable.
If, on the other hand, you know your Dad still fixes the roof, strings the Christmas lights, and mows the lawn, while your Mom still cleans the house from top to bottom and weeds the flowerbed every day and nothing is going to stop them, thank you very much, then a reverse mortgage might work for them. They will get to stay in their home while still enjoying the equity they worked to build up.
Are Reverse Mortgages a Good Idea?
The real issue with reverse mortgages is why your folks might need one. If they did not save adequately for retirement because they were irresponsible with their money, or if they have trouble living on a budget or a fixed income, the problem may be one that a reverse mortgage cannot solve.
If your parents keep you in the loop on their financial issues, take the time to sit down with them and their financial advisor to determine the best course of action to keep them happily puttering and wondering why you never call through many years of retirement. A hard look at numbers will help you all determine if a reverse mortgage disadvantages outweigh the potential benefits.

Christmas time is only a month and a half away! At our house it’s one of the most joyous times of the year as we celebrate the birth of our savior, and revel in all the blessings we have seen in our lives during the year. This year we’re celebrating the birth of our first born son – and he’s celebrating his first Christmas!
The most important parts of Christmas aren’t physical or material things, but in our culture it’s often expected to give gifts during the Christmas season. Because of that, if you’re not careful it can quickly become one of the most expensive times of year. CLTC Insurance Services, or California Long Term Care Insurance Services, is a long-term care insurance aggregator, based in San Francisco. Aggregator is a fancy word for an online insurance marketplace. As an aggregator, CLTC will give you access to a large number of long-term care insurance companies. You can then choose the one offering the plan that will work best for you. The main limitation of this provider is that they offer policies only in the state of California.
In addition to long-term care insurance, they also offer annuities and life insurance policies, both with long-term care riders. These types of policies eliminate the need for a dedicated LTC policy, since the cost of long-term care is paid out of the proceeds of the annuity or life insurance. CLTC also offers critical illness insurance.
Long-Term Care Insurance Guide
What is Long-Term Care?
When an individual reaches a point where they can no longer care for themselves, long-term care becomes necessary. That care can be provided by anyone from family members to nursing homes.
The need for long-term care generally applies when the individual can no longer perform one or more of the six activities of daily living (ADL). This can include inability to dress, groom, go to the bathroom, bathe, eat, or even to move about freely.
In most cases, long-term care becomes necessary after a major health event, like a heart attack or stroke. But it can also be the result of an ongoing, degenerative health condition or simply advancing age.
In most cases, long-term care is provided by a family member. But institutional care may be necessary if the individual is unable to perform several ADLs, which may overwhelm the ability of family members to provide ongoing care.

How to Purchase Long-Term Care Coverage?
We recommend contacting any of the seven best long-term care insurance providers in this guide. Otherwise, do a search and identify insurance companies that offer long-term care coverage. But be aware that not all insurance companies offer it, precisely because of the many variables. It involves.
When purchasing a policy, be aware of the following:
Like life insurance, it’s best to purchase LTC insurance when you’re young and healthy. That’s when the premiums are lowest.
Consider purchasing a long-term care insurance alternative, like a life insurance policy or an annuity with a long-term care rider (see below). It’s generally much less expensive.
Pay close attention to the maximum benefit paid, whether daily, monthly, annually, or lifetime. It should approximate nursing home costs in your area. (Be aware that these costs vary greatly from one state to another.)
Pay close attention to the benefit period. While the typical number of years an individual needs long-term care coverage is three years, there’s no way to tell what you may need. If you can afford the higher premium, it may be best to go with the longer benefit period, say, five years or longer.
Be aware of the elimination period. The standard is 90 days, but it can be as long as one year. This is not a minor factor, since nursing home care at $8,000 per month could cost you $24,000 with a 90-day waiting period before benefits kick in. The waiting period you choose should match the amount of liquid assets you expect to have available to cover it.
When you take a policy, be prepared to pay the premium for the rest of your life. If you take a policy at 60, stop making the payments at 80, then you need long-term care at 85, you’ll get no benefits from the lapsed policy.
According to the website Consumer Affairs, long-term care insurance premiums look something like this:
Now, the screenshot above reflects only sample averages for very specific policies at ages 55 and 65. The actual premium you will pay will be based on a combination of factors, including your age at the time of purchase, any health conditions you have, as well as the dollar amount and term of the benefits your policy will include.
Finally, given how complicated long-term care insurance is, it wouldn’t be overkill to have the policy reviewed by an attorney before accepting it. If so, an attorney who specializes in elder care will be your best choice.
Who Needs Long-Term Care Coverage?
The short answer to this question is everyone. The unfortunate reality is that people turning 65 have an almost 70% chance of needing some type of long-term care services during their lifetimes. Approximately 37% will require institutional care. And statistically, women and single individuals are more likely to require long-term care than men and married individuals.
If you’re unsure if you need long-term care, check out Jeff’s post, Long term care insurance: do you really need it?.
Though it isn’t well-known outside the industry, there are two basic types of long-term care coverage available. The first is a standalone long-term-care insurance policy.
Like a life insurance policy, medical underwriting will be performed. The insurance company will consider your age, your health condition, your family health history, your occupation, requested benefit levels, and other factors in approving your application and setting the premium level. This is the more costly of the two options.
The other is a hybrid policy. Most commonly, this is life insurance with long-term care benefits. You’ll purchase a basic life insurance policy, then add a long-term care rider to the policy. This will increase the premium on the life insurance policy, but it will be much less expensive than a standalone long-term-care policy.
Meanwhile, you’ll also have a death benefit from the life insurance policy, in addition to long-term-care coverage. But the policy may also include using some or all the death benefits to pay the long-term-care benefits. Your beneficiaries will receive only the amount of the unused death benefit upon your death.
Most of the best life insurance companies offer life insurance policies with this rider.
Another variant of this option is to use an annuity with long-term care rider. Annuities are designed to provide an income stream, very similar to a pension. But similar to a life insurance policy with a long-term care insurance rider, you can also add the rider to an annuity.
Again, it will be less expensive than purchasing a standalone long-term-care policy. And the long-term-care benefits may reduce any death benefit in your annuity. But the provision will be much less expensive than purchasing a standalone long-term-care policy.

Finding the Right Policy
Long-term care insurance is one of the more complicated insurance types. It also includes more potential variables than other policies. For example, not only will you not know if you will need the coverage at all, but you won’t know when, to what degree, what level of care will be required, or how long it will be needed.
Because of all these variables, the cost of a long-term care insurance policy can be all over the place. But it may be better to pay a little bit more for a more comprehensive policy than to price-shop for the least expensive plan.

How We Found the Best Long-Term Care Insurance Companies
We used the following criteria to determine the best long-term care insurance companies of 2023:
Maximum Benefits: Given that the cost of long-term care can easily run into hundreds of thousands of dollars, we favored companies with the most generous lifetime benefits.
Benefit Period: One of the most basic problems with long-term care is the uncertainty. There’s no way to know in advance what level of care you might need, or how long it might be necessary. For that reason, we favor the companies that provide the most flexibility in this area.
Waiting/Elimination Period: Just as most insurance policies have deductibles, long-term care insurance uses the waiting period in much the same way. The standard delay on benefits is 90 days. But we prefer companies that offer longer waiting periods, since this will represent an opportunity to lower the cost.
Speaking of cost, as much as we would like to provide a list of average costs per provider, this information simply is not available. That’s because long-term care insurance is highly customized. There’s nothing approximating a “one-size-fits-all” policy, as each policy premium is determined by a multitude of factors.
These include your age at the time you purchase the policy, your general health condition, your family health history, the length and amount of coverage you need, and many other factors. The only way to get a reliable premium figure will be to contact one of the companies above and get a quote.

Long-term care insurance is a type of coverage that will provide benefits to pay for your personal care when you’re no longer able to do so for yourself. While the typical long-term-care scenario involves a nursing home, it also applies in lesser situations. That can include assisted living arrangements, home nursing care, and even family care. The policy will begin paying benefits when you qualify for care based on inability to perform several of the ADLs.

As mentioned earlier, long-term care insurance benefits begin to apply when you are unable to perform activities of basic living. Depending on the type of policy you have, you’ll receive benefits for a stay in a nursing home, an assisted living facility, skilled nursing care, an adult day care, hospice, and even home care provided by your family.
Some policies will even provide for the cost of modifying your home to better accommodate your capabilities, or the purchase of certain helpful equipment.

A typical long-term-care insurance policy will pay benefits between two and five years, though some will go as long as seven, and a few providers offer lifetime benefits. You should be aware that you will need to qualify for whatever coverage term you prefer, and the longer the term, the higher the premium will be.

It really depends on your perceived need for the coverage, and your ability to pay the premiums. Need can be determined by your family history. If you have multiple family members who require long-term care, having the coverage for yourself will be highly desirable. But if you’re in excellent health, and there’s little history of a need for care in your family, you may want to pass on the coverage.
And of course, given the high cost of the premiums, your ability to afford coverage can never be ignored. But if you have very limited financial means, Medicaid may provide benefits for long-term care. However, to qualify your total assets must generally be below $2,000.
