South Carolina housing prices
The range of housing prices in South Carolina is pretty large. Some cities almost reach the national average while others are significantly below. This is good news for someone who wants to live in one of the best places in South Carolina but has a limited budget.
Charleston
Sandy beaches, a thriving downtown and oh so much history combine to make Charleston a truly special place. Not only is it pretty to look at, but this city’s seafood scene makes it a delicious place to call home. One of the most popular cities in South Carolina, it also has the highest housing prices on our list at only 5.1 percent below the national average.
Rental prices aren’t rising too quickly in Charleston, and costs are relatively low. One-bedrooms are actually more expensive, per month, than two-bedrooms. Up 8 percent over last year, the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $1,604. Two-beds average out over $250 less. Up 7 percent over last year, they’ll currently cost you $1,353 a month.
Home prices are on the higher end, and that’s in part because of some of the amazingly large houses in the Charleston area. The median sale price here is $516,000, which is up by 16.8 percent over last year.
Columbia
The state’s capital, Columbia, offers that perfect mix of fast-paced urban and small-town feel. Home to the University of South Carolina, residents are an eclectic mix of college students, families and young professionals. The city is also quite affordable. Housing prices in Columbia are 27.2 percent below the national average.
Rent prices lay on the economical side, with prices having slowly risen since last year. One-bedroom apartments are only up 5 percent, and two-bedroom apartments rose even less at 4 percent. The average monthly price for a one-bedroom is $1,059, and $1,155 for apartments with two-bedroom apartments.
Home prices have also stayed relatively low, rising only 10 percent over last year. The median home price in Columbia is $230,000.
Greenville
As South Carolina’s fastest-growing city, Greenville is full of economic opportunity. All this potential is in a beautiful city within the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains. Downtown you’ll find plenty of shops, restaurants and a weekend farmers market. The biggest bonus? Housing is actually pretty affordable. Prices are 31 percent below the national average.
Even though rental prices and home sales are rising, you’re still paying a relatively manageable amount. One-bedroom apartments, up 18 percent over last year, have an average monthly rent of $1,422. Two-bedroom apartments, increasing at only 14 percent over last year, have an average monthly rent of $1,605.
Home prices have risen the most, up 28.4 percent, but the median sale price in Greenville is still moderate at $353,000.
Spartanburg
With small-town charm and a quieter pace, Spartanburg still provides residents with a variety of job opportunities. However, the city is still revitalizing, bringing art and culture back. That said, Spartanburg has a lot going for it, and it’s a pretty affordable place. Housing prices here are 17 percent below the national average.
The most growth, when it comes to housing in Spartanburg, is with two-bedroom apartments. Prices are up 22 percent over last year. By comparison, one-beds have only risen 3 percent, and home prices are actually down by 7.5 percent.
Still, even with this big leap, prices aren’t that high in comparison with other South Carolina cities. A two-bedroom apartment is $1,205 a month on average. One-bedrooms are $1,120, and the median home sale price in Spartanburg is $185,000.
South Carolina food prices
Comfort food with a dash of Southern charm is what’s for dinner in South Carolina. You can’t beat a big bowl of shrimp and grits, some freshly made pimento cheese on crackers and a good ol’ Low Country boil. There’s also the ability to buy fresh oysters, pulled from the Intracoastal Waterway hours before. South Carolina is delicious.
When they’re not eating out, South Carolinians spend between $200 and $233 per month on groceries. This accounts for the fact that cities across the state straddle the national average. Some are slightly below, others are slightly above.
Greenville is 2.7 percent below the national average
Spartanburg is 2.5 percent below the national average
Charleston is 2.6 percent above the national average
Columbia is 3.2 percent above the national average
What this means, when looking at individual items, is that price differential isn’t too high between cities. Fried chicken in Charleston is less than a dollar more than it costs in Greenville. Potatoes, for your Low Country boil, are less than a dollar more in Greenville than in Columbia.
Overall, ranking a total food price doesn’t always give you insight into which city will have the most expensive foods. It’s best to check what our own shopping list would cost.
Food prices also include what you’d pay for a date night. Here, the prices vary more significantly than when you’re at the grocery store. A three-course meal for two is 46 percent less in Spartanburg than in Columbia and Charleston. It’s the difference between paying $35 in Spartanburg to take your special someone out and paying $65 in both other cities.
South Carolina utility prices
Most energy produced in South Carolina is nuclear energy. Adding this utility bill in with the other big ones — gas, water and internet, South Carolina cities are kind of all over the scale.
Greenville is 4.8 percent below the national average
Spartanburg is 3.9 percent below the national average
Charleston is 16.9 percent above the national average
Columbia is 31.2 percent above the national average
When it comes to the actual bills, Columbia has the highest monthly power bill, on average at $270.54. Greenville has the lowest at $160.93.
South Carolina transportation prices
Transportation prices take into consideration all the costs you’d have getting around town. Of course, walking and biking are usually free, but Charleston is really the only city on the list with high walk (63) and bike (64) scores. For most everyone else, it’s car ownership and/or public transportation.
Looking at overall transportation prices:
Columbia is 21.4 percent below the national average
Charleston is 3.6 percent below the national average
Greenville is 3 percent below the national average
Spartanburg is 2.8 percent above the national average
Columbia’s prices are so very low as a result of its public transportation network. You can get to almost anywhere in town without having to drive a car. Other cities do provide accessible public transportation that does what it can to move you through the city minus owning a vehicle.
Spartanburg SPARTA
Maybe not the most original name, but the Spartanburg Area Regional Transit Agency, or SPARTA provides bus service throughout the city. Consisting of eight routes, a single fare is $1.25.
Ride passes are also available, so you can find the best deal. For example, a five-day and 10-day pass cost the same at $11.25. A 31-day pass is $37.50.
Greenville Greenlink
Consisting of 12 fixed bus routes moving across Greenville County and a free downtown trolley, Greenlink has its bases covered. To ride the bus, a single fare is $1.50, a day pass is $5 and a 31-day pass is $50.
The trolley moves along Greenville’s Main Street and has five different routes. They don’t all operate on the same schedule, though, so make sure you look up your route to avoid long wait times.
Charleston CARTA
A combination of regular and express routes CARTA passes cost $15 for a seven-day pass and $57 for a 31-day pass. Prices are higher if you need to factor in trips on any express lines. If you need to buy a single fare, the cost is $3.50.
Charleston also has the Downtown Area Shuttle or DASH. This shuttle service includes three lines that move through downtown and are all free.
Columbia COMET
The COMET is easy to spot in Columbia. The buses drive down the road painted in bright, neon colors. Routes stretch across the region and include a shuttle known as the Soda Cap Connector. It goes from one entertainment district to another for just $1.00 per way.
The long list of buses that make up COMET cost $2 per way, but you can buy a day pass for $4 and a 31-day pass for $40.
South Carolina healthcare
Healthcare in South Carolina is relatively affordable. Most cities fall under the national average which means your costs for the dentist, doctor, eye doctor, urgent care and even your medications shouldn’t break the bank.
Columbia is 15.7 percent below the national average
Charleston is 11 percent below the national average
Greenville is 1.9 percent below the national average
Spartanburg is 4.9 percent above the national average
What’s important to check, though, is healthcare costs in your city. Based on your needs, you could pay more than average since costs per care item won’t always fall in this city order. For example, a doctor’s visit in Greenville is actually the least expensive on the list at an average cost of $106.67. Charleston, which sits near the lower end overall, has the most expensive doctor’s visit cost with an average bill of $140.
South Carolina goods and services prices
When you look at your budget, you’ll have items on your list that are necessities — food and shelter — and those that you just really enjoy having — going out money. The second category constitutes all the goods and services you use. You don’t need them to survive, but you really like having them, so it’s important you know you can afford them.
Most cities in South Carolina hang close to the national average when it comes to the combined price of goods and services.

According to the citywide averages, Greenville has the highest average prices, but when you look at a few specific items, only that cheesy delicious pizza will cost you more. That’s why it’s best to really evaluate your own budget when thinking about making a move. It’s the little things that will add up.
Budgeting in childcare
When looking at goods and services, it’s not just all the little things you need to think about. There are some not-so-little items that come into play here when you’re at a specific stage of life.
We’re talking about childcare, and sticker shock from paying for a full-day, private preschool is more common than you may think. Monthly costs can and will often get into the thousands, so you need to make sure you’ve got the budget to cover this expense when the time comes.
In our South Carolina cities, Charleston is the most expensive when it comes to childcare at $1,098 per month. Columbia is the most affordable at only $500 per month, on average.
Taxes in South Carolina
The state sales tax rate in South Carolina is 6 percent, but localities are able to add onto that up to 3 percent more. And, while the average sales tax rate is only 7.44 percent, it can get as high as 9 percent.

To calculate whether rent is in the budget, start with $1,373. This is the average rent in South Carolina per month. Then, multiply it by 12 to get the total rent you’d pay in a year — $16,476. This number should equal 30 percent of your total income since that’s what most experts say you should put toward rent. Virginia housing prices
When it comes to the overall cost of living in Virginia, numbers tend to linger close to the national average. The same is not true when looking at housing prices. Where you live and how close to Washington, D.C., you are definitely impacts housing prices in Virginia, so pack a big budget if you’re planning on commuting into our country’s capital.
Alexandria
Just outside of Washington, D.C., if you’re coming to Virginia as a commuter, Alexandria is where you’ll want to live. At only seven miles or one subway ride away, it’s very easy to head to work without having to live right in D.C. However, this convenience comes at a price, and the small-city living you’ll find in Alexandria has housing prices that are 108.4 percent above the national average.
Rent and home prices also take quite a leap here. Even with moderate price increases over last year, a one-bedroom apartment’s average monthly rent is $2,014, and a two-bedroom’s is $2,490. One-beds rose in price by 5 percent over last year, and two-beds rose by 5 percent.
The median home price in Alexandria is $650,000, but the price is only up 6.6 percent from last year.
Arlington
The most expensive city on our list, Arlington is practically in Washington, D.C., so it has serious housing prices. They’re 132 percent above the national average. This means you’ve really got to pay for where you live in Virginia, especially when you can see D.C. from your house.
Both one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments in Arlington saw a 17 percent increase in cost over last year, but what’s significant is what that takes rent to each month. Again, this is an expensive city, especially when we’re talking about rent. One-bedroom apartments have an average monthly rent of $2,527, but two-beds are a whopping $3,442 per month. Might be time to consider a roommate.
Homes are also expensive, though, with not as drastic of a price tag as renting an apartment. The median home in Arlington is $670,000, down 7.6 percent over last year.
Charlottesville
Combining hiking and canoeing with skiing and snowboarding, Charlottesville provides outdoor activities all year long. Sitting at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this scenic city offers a perfect location for just about everyone. It’s both a college town and a foodie city, a place full of culture, history and more. With all this going on, Charlottesville housing prices edge just above the national average at 2.9 percent over.
This also means that rent is going to cost you. Both one and two-bedroom apartments have seen price increases over the last year and come with a sizable monthly rent. One-bedroom apartments, up 16 percent over last year, have an average rent of $1,592 per month. Two-bedroom apartments, up 19 percent over last year, are costing an average of $1,767 per month.
Homes for sale are rising at a slower rate than those for rent, up only 10.1 percent over last year. The median sale price for homes in Charlottesville is $413,000.
Lynchburg
An outdoorsy location, just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lynchburg is great city for hikers, skiers and those who like to partake in water activities. Situated in the center of the state, it’s a ways from Washington, D.C, meaning housing prices are more affordable at 24.7 percent below the national average.
Rent prices are quite affordable in Lynchburg, having only risen by 6 percent over last year on all accounts. A one-bedroom apartment is only an average of $875 per month, and a two-bedroom averages out at $965 per month.
Home prices are rising a bit faster, up 16.7 percent over last year. The median home price in Lynchburg is $228,000.
Richmond
The capital of Virginia, Richmond is a hub of higher education. Home to the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University and more, students flock to the area, but Richmond offers so much more. It’s also a favorite spot for millennials and its location on both sides of the James River makes it an attractive destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Home prices in Richmond are also on the more affordable side at 13.3 percent below the national average.
Seeing decent growth in the rental market, one-bedroom apartments have increased in price by 13 percent. Two-bedrooms are up 12 percent to an average monthly rent of $1,756 and one-bedrooms average out to $1,425 per month.
Home prices are up 22.6 percent over last year bringing the median sale price in Richmond to $352,000.
Virginia food prices
Another cost of living in Virginia is food. Known for Southern-style cuisine, must-try Virginia dishes may not have originated in the state, but they’re now part of the culture. You can get delicious barbecue, blue crab, oysters and Brunswick Stew here, but the state is best known for its country ham. For those Virginians who like to infuse their own home cooking with this Southern charm, the average grocery shopper spends between $233 and $267 per month.
Just like with housing, prices on food tend to go up the closer you get to Washington, D.C.
Lynchburg is 8.1 percent below the national average
Richmond is 7.5 percent below the national average
Charlottesville is 3.6 percent below the national average

When it comes to individual grocery items, these differences in food pricing overall can mean a lot. You’ll pay almost a dollar more for a dozen eggs in Alexandria over Lynchburg, and almost two dollars more for potatoes. These small price differences can easily add up when building your weekly grocery list.
Going out to eat has the same issue, as well. It costs $59 for a three-course meal for two in Lynchburg, but you’ll pay 21 percent more or $75 in Charlottesville.
Virginia utility prices
Utilities are pretty much at the national average across Virginia. Although some are slightly under, and some a little above, it’s typically by just a tiny bit, which is good news for the overall cost of living in Virginia.
Alexandria and Arlington are both 2.3 percent below the national average
Charlottesville is 0.4 percent below the national average
Richmond is 3.5 percent above the national average
Lynchburg is 9.7 percent above the national average
When it comes specifically to energy costs, you’ll spend, on average, anywhere from $170 to $210 per month. If you want to save a little, Blacksburg has the lowest electric bill at $138.37 and the lowest utility prices at 13.2 percent below the national average.
Virginia transportation prices
Transportation prices include all the costs associated with getting around any given city. Throughout Virginia, that could mean owning a car, using public transportation or even getting around on foot or by bike.
Cities like Alexandria and Arlington have a relatively high walk and bike scores meaning you may not even need to own a car to comfortably navigate the city. Arlington tops the charts with an 81 for a walk score and 74 for a bike score, but Alexandria isn’t too far behind with a 62 walk score and 58 bike score.
Overall, when it comes to transportation prices:
Charlottesville is 12.8 percent below the national average
Lynchburg is 7.4 percent below the national average
Richmond is 6.8 percent below the national average
Arlington is 10 percent above the national average
Alexandria is 36.5 percent above the national average
Again, the closer you are to D.C., the higher the cost of living Virginia. This could be a result of parking prices if you drive around, or simply just the cost of being able to utilize public transportation to get around.
WMATA and DASH in Alexandria
Because of its proximity to Washington, D.C., Alexandria has services from two different public transportation systems. The WMATA operates the subway. Also called the Metro, there are four stations within Alexandria that provide access to both the yellow and blue lines. The time of day you ride determines the Metro price you’ll pay. For peak hours, a one-way fare is between $2.25 to $6.00. During off-peak hours you’ll pay between $2.00 to $3.85.
Local bus services in Alexandria motor through the city thanks to DASH. There are three color-coded routes. Red routes are frequent routes, with buses coming every 15 minutes or less. Blue routes run slower, but all week long, and green routes only run on weekdays. DASH is now free to ride throughout Alexandria. There’s also a free King Street Trolley you can take advantage of when in Old Town Alexandria.
ART in Arlington
Arlington’s bus system, ART, also connects to the Metro, among other modes of public transportation. It has 16 routes. Those with frequent service come every 20 minutes or less. The one-way fare on ART is $2. To transfer to the Metro, you’ll pay an additional 50 cents.
GRTC in Richmond
A long list of bus routes and a few express options make up the GRTC system. Covering Richmond and surrounding counties and cities, the GRTC has been in operation for over 150 years, only stopping service once, during the Civil War.
Today, the single-way fare on any local route is $1.50 and passes are available. You can get a seven-day pass for $17.50, or a 30-day pass for $60. Express and extended express routes, do cost more per way and vary in price.
Virginia healthcare prices
Throughout Virginia, healthcare is on the more costly side, with more cities above the national average than in most other costs of living categories. This total includes visits to your doctor, dentist and eye doctor. It includes urgent care stops, as well as any prescriptions you have to buy.
Lynchburg is 3.2 percent below the national average
Alexandria is 1.1 percent above the national average
Richmond is 2.7 percent above the national average
Charlottesville is 9 percent above the national average

At these numbers, the average doctor’s visit in Virginia could cost as much as $162.50 in Arlington or as little as $136.80 in Lynchburg.
Virginia goods and services
For all those things that go onto your monthly budget that isn’t really necessary for survival, they fit into the cost of living in Virginia for goods and services categories. These are the items you need to have for you, but if you suddenly couldn’t afford them, you’d still get by.
Totaling all of these up, goods and services in our Virginia cities almost all cost more than what you pay on average across the county.

Alexandria almost holds onto the most expensive items for our whole chart. Arlington beats the city out only when it comes to dry cleaning bills. Similarly, Lynchburg isn’t always the cheapest city when it comes to individual goods and services. Seeing how the order continues to switch, it’s important to look at costs that relate to the goods and services you use when budgeting.
Childcare as a good/service
One of the priciest items within the goods and services category is childcare. Most first-time parents experience quite a shock when they have to start adding this into their monthly budget. Childcare isn’t cheap, but where you live can greatly impact the price.
The most expensive city when it comes to paying for a full-day, private preschool is Alexandria. Monthly costs are, on average, $1,833.33. Arlington and Charlottesville both also have monthly costs above $1,000, as well. The least expensive city is Richmond, at only $516.67 per month for preschool.
Taxes in Virginia
Virginia has four different income tax rate brackets based on income. You’ll either pay 2, 3, 5 or 5.75 percent.
When it comes to sales tax, the state rate is 5.3 percent. Localities can add on to this an additional amount, bringing the total up to no more than 7 percent. At the max, for every $1,000 you spend shopping, $70 goes right to taxes.
Arlington, Alexandria and Richmond all have the same sale tax rate of 6 percent. Charlottesville and Lynchburg opted to stay a little lower, sharing the same sales tax rate of 5.3 percent.
How much do I need to earn to live in Virginia?
When calculating how much you really need to make to live in a specific place, the cost of rent should always come into play first. Since experts suggest you put 30 percent of your annual income toward rent, you need to afford this expense first and foremost.
In Virginia, the average rent is $1,748, so you’d need to make a minimum of $69,920 to meet the 30 percent requirement.
The annual average wage in Virginia comes close to this at $62,330 but means you won’t always be able to get an ‘average’ apartment in every city. You may have to look at more affordable locations to find the perfect apartment.

Men’s soccer games typically cost more than twice as much as women’s
On the resale markets, men’s soccer tickets are always pricier than women’s tickets. Like, a lot pricier.
First, a primer. The U.S. has two professional soccer leagues: the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and the Major League Soccer (MLS), which is the U.S. league for men’s soccer.
To get a broad sense of what fans can expect to spend on MLS or NWSL tickets, consider data from SeatGeek, a ticket resale marketplace that has calculated average ticket costs for teams’ events.
Among tickets listed for resale on SeatGeek, MLS tickets cost an average of $50, while NWSL tickets cost an average of $23. Put another way: On SeatGeek, women’s soccer tickets cost less than half the price for a ticket to a men’s game.
And city to city, the gulfs between ticket costs range dramatically.
The starkest discrepancy is in Houston, where Houston Dash NWSL tickets average $15, and Houston Dynamo MLS tickets average $45 — three times as much.
Tickets to men’s and women’s games are the most closely priced in Washington, DC., with tickets to the Washington Spirit NWSL matches averaging $29, and those of the D.C. United MLS team, at $42, per SeatGeek.
The value of attending a women’s soccer game
So yes, across the board, tickets to NWSL matches are significantly cheaper than tickets to MLS matches — a disappointing byproduct of systemic discrimination in sports, but an excellent reason to put your entertainment dollars toward women’s soccer games.
And chances are, your local women’s team has some of the best professional soccer players on the planet.That’s because NWSL players also make up the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) — you know, arguably the best women’s soccer team in the world.
The U.S. Women’s National Team has won four of the eight FIFA Women’s World Cups that have been held. Meanwhile, the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) hasn’t won any of the 22 FIFA World Cups held since 1930. The women’s team has won four Olympic gold medals, while the men’s team has nabbed one Olympic medal since 1904 — bronze, in 2000.
Americans seem to be catching on to the hype. The NWSL is growing explosively as attitudes around women’s sports continue to evolve. Attendance skyrocketed 80% year over year in 2022, and revenue from ticket sales swelled more than 125%, according to CNBC.
Attending a NWSL match means supporting the league — and watching world-class players — for a relatively low cost.
“The rocket fuel behind the growth of any sport league is attendance,” Jessica Berman, commissioner of the National Women’s Soccer League, told ESPN in 2022.
Where to watch soccer
Catch a women’s soccer game if you live near one of the 12 U.S. cities with NWSL teams: Cary, North Carolina; Chicago (technically Bridgeview, Illinois); Houston; Kansas City, Kansas; Los Angeles; Louisville, Kentucky; Harrison, New Jersey (in the New York area); Orlando, Florida; Portland, Oregon; San Diego; Seattle and Washington, D.C.

Hartford
The capital of Connecticut, Hartford is one of the more affordable places to live in the state. Housing prices are only 1.4 percent above the national average, so not too far out of reach for many. The city has a long history, solid job opportunities and some amazing museums. The variety of local parks is an ideal family-friendly destination, as well, when the weather is nice (it does get cold in the winter.)
Apartment prices are on the rise and may sit at the high end of your budget. One-bedroom apartments, up 14 percent over last year, have an average monthly rent of $1,747. Two-bedroom apartments, up 10 percent over last year, have an average monthly rent of $2,367.
Home prices aren’t rising as quickly as apartment rent, up only 2.6 percent over last year. The median home price in Hartford is $240,000.
New Haven
Home to Yale University, New Haven is a college town with a little bit more. The prestigious university is a cornerstone of the city, but there’s also the beach, the history, museums and even nearby skiing. Living in New Haven isn’t cheap, though, and home prices are 20.9 percent above the national average.
Apartments are going to cost you, too, especially if you’re a college student. You may want to consider a roommate to keep things affordable. The average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $2,455, which is up 18 percent over last year. Two-bedroom apartments, up 17 percent over last year, average out to cost $3,102 per month.
Homes for sale are a little more reasonable, and the median sale price in New Haven is $280,000, down 12.5 percent over last year.
Stamford
With the highest home prices in the state, the cost of living in Connecticut really gets skewed thanks to places like Stamford. Here, home prices are 68.6 percent above the national average. This affluent city primarily attracts families and professionals and is perfectly situated for commuters. Many neighborhoods provide a small-town feel without taking you too far away from the urban amenities of downtown. That’s good news since your housing budget may make it hard to live right in the middle of it all.
Apartment rents are increasing at a pretty significant rate. One-bedrooms are up 23 percent, and two-bedrooms are up 34 percent, both over last year. This puts average monthly rent prices up there. The average rent for a one-bedroom is $2,654 per month, while a two-bedroom averages out at $3,599.
Home prices are also on the higher side, and the median sale price in Stamford is $680,000. This is up 11.5 percent over last year.
Connecticut food prices
Lobster rolls are the most iconic food out of Connecticut (and all of New England), but the state does a few favorites just a little differently. First, they steam their cheeseburgers rather than grill them, and if you’re in New Haven it’s ‘apizza’ and not pizza that’s on the menu. In the fall, you can sample another iconic Connecticut food, homemade apple cider. With all this deliciousness, Connecticut residents spend between $267 and $300 per month on groceries.
Across the state, food prices align with other costs of living elements in Connecticut and are above the national average.
New Haven is 0.4 percent above the national average

With these averages relatively close together, you most likely won’t find huge price differentials in specific grocery items. The difference in ground beef prices is less than a dollar across these three cities, and a dozen eggs are only 11 cents more from their cheapest to most expensive.
Average prices are a little higher for some things, though. A loaf of bread in Hartford is on the high side at $4.69, but even with a few doozies, you can stay on a budget when you grocery shop.

Connecticut winters can really ramp up your utility costs. The winter season is long, with the lowest temperatures between December and February. Evening temperatures can get down to zero degrees Fahrenheit, and snowfall is heavy. As a result, you may pay more for heating in the winter, which can raise overall utility prices pretty quickly.

Transportation prices throughout Connecticut are all above average, but on the whole, this state is very easy to get around. With some of the most walkable cities in the country, certain pockets of Connecticut are perfect for those who don’t want the expense of owning a car. Stamford has a walk score of 84. With walkable blocks, sidewalks and pedestrian walkways, the city is easy to navigate on foot, especially around the waterfront. There’s also a free trolley for when your feet get tired.
Public transportation in Connecticut
Each of our Connecticut cities provides public transportation, enabling residents to get around town without their own vehicles.
Hartford offers up two options. CT Transit has both local and express bus services around the city. For local service, a two-hour pass is $1.75, and a 31-day pass is $63. The dash Shuttle is another option. It’s a free service that runs downtown during the week, with extra service during major downtown events.
CT Transit also operates in New Haven and Stamford. New Haven buses run across 22 different routes, while Stamford operates 15. As long as you’re on a local bus line, even in separate cities, CT transit passes are the same price.
Stamford offers one additional mode of public transportation, the Harbor Point Trolley. This line connects the downtown area to Harbor Point, stopping at major spots like the government center and the University of Connecticut. The trolley is free to ride.

In Concord, the state capital and a popular college town, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $1,245. In Nashua, the second-most-populous city in the state, the average one-bedroom rent is $1,725. Of New Hampshire’s three most populous cities, Concord has the lowest average rent. If you’re priced out of these cities, don’t worry. Smaller towns nearby likely have more affordable options.
New Hampshire food prices
Living in New Hampshire means getting to enjoy classic New England flavors, dishes and foods like maple syrup, apple cider donuts and seasonal produce like apples.
