I head to Connecticut early today for the CMBA conference, but on another personal note, congratulations to Robbie Chrisman, host of the daily mortgage podcast based on this Commentary, who recently rode his single-speed bicycle from Manhattan, across the Appalachians, to Chicago, working when not pedaling. (In terms of physical prowess, I feel fortunate not cramping up putting my socks on in the morning.) The weather seems to have improved in most places, the Northeast included, and we’re approaching travel season. Here’s an interesting list of tourist scams to avoid during all seasons. (I’ve never had a baby thrown my way.) Perhaps the improving weather influenced homebuilder sentiment, as have falling lumber prices: sentiment has improved in May according to the NAHB off the lows of 2022. People need a place to live, but perhaps not one to work. “The ‘return to the office’ won’t save the office: More people are going to offices more of the time. Offices are still in trouble.” U.S. lenders, including banks who own those loans, are being warned that commercial property is “next shoe to drop.” Executives and investors fret about the impact of rising rates and empty buildings on the $5.6 trillion market. (Today’s podcast can be found here and this week’s is sponsored by Richey May, a recognized leader in providing specialized advisory, audit, tax, technology and other services to the mortgage industry for almost four decades, helping transform the mortgage business. Interview with Richey May’s Nathan Lee on the best ways for lenders to leverage data, benchmark, and analyze various metrics to achieve profitability.)

Still on the fence about DPA? Here what Click n’ Close client Steve Shelton, Managing Principal at First Choice Lending Services, has to say: “Click n’ Close’s proprietary DPA product has helped us tremendously grow our purchase money business and close more deals, especially when our borrowers don’t qualify for other programs because of income limits, or where seller-paid concessions weren’t available or in multiple offer situations. From management to account executives, inside reps and underwriters, everyone at Click n’ Close comes together to figure out how to make loans work and close them efficiently, truly a boutique style of service rarely seen in today’s wholesale marketplace.” Contact Adam Rieke or Kerry Webb (wholesale) or Julas Hollie (correspondent) to get started today. P.S. Don’t miss Michael Lima’s DPA session at the MBA Secondary Conference on Tuesday, May 23 at 11 am, or drop him a line to meet in person.
What’s an internal audit anyway and do you need one? An internal audit acts as a third line of defense for your mortgage operation. It provides comprehensive assurance based on the highest level of independence and objectivity to evaluate the effectiveness of management’s internal controls. This function should advise your mortgage operation on plans to achieve the company’s strategic, operational, financial and compliance goals. An effective internal audit should go far beyond just checking a compliance box; it should be an integral part of protecting your company. If you want to ensure you’re adhering to regulatory requirements and demonstrating good faith business practices, a Richey May internal audit is a good fit. If you’re looking to be Fannie Mae approved in the future or want to maintain your approved status, it’s required. If you’re unsure whether you need an internal audit, ask one of Richey May’s experts today or learn more here.
There are over 200 different species of chameleons in the world, each optimized for their own environment. Their ability to adapt and change color in their surroundings is key to their survival. In a rapidly evolving mortgage industry, lenders need to be able to adapt just as quickly. As home equity increases HELOCs present lenders with new opportunities, and innovative technology can help lenders offset the risks involved in home equity lending. In a Q&A with the National Association of Federally Insured Credit Unions (NAFCU), Wolters Kluwer’s Mark Mackey explored the effects of the shifting industry and the growing importance of Home Equity, particularly in regard to credit unions. He also examines the risks and benefits of HELOCs. Learn more about the importance of HELOCs in the shifting industry by reading the Q&A today.
You do everything to create a perfect origination experience, yet you send a link to some random AMCs your borrowers never heard of where they’re expected to share personal information and a credit card. For lenders with less than 50 loans per month, is it likely your AMC will create a dedicated page featuring your brand? Not likely. Well, enter Jaro. Not an AMC, but technology that empowers AMCs. This technology creates a branded landing page for your appraisal orders. Additionally, Jaro offers a suite of products to provide more predictability with your borrower’s values. On Tuesday, May 23rd at 2 pm ET/11 am PT, National Mortgage Professional, we’ll deep-dive into the appraisal process, identify its flaws, and discuss potential remedies made possible by Jaro, all without switching your AMC. This session will feature Jaro’s Managing Director, Gareth Borcherds. To be a part of this enlightening discussion, register here.
Capital Markets
Mortgage rates rose to the highest level in nearly two months yesterday as prices on the front-end of the yield curve were weighed down by better-than-expected data and long-end yields were pushed up due to Pfizer’s $31 billion duration-heavy, multi-tranche, fourth largest ever offering of bonds. There were also FDIC sales, $12.5 billion over Monday and yesterday in total, which contributed to the widening of MBS spreads to roughly 315 basis points. Retail sales, which factor into GDP, rose in April despite still-high inflation and borrowing costs as slow unemployment and steady wage growth continued to support demand. The 0.4 percent month-over-month advance in sales would normally be good but follows larger declines in February and March (-0.7 percent) and doesn’t take into account price changes, meaning that on an inflation-adjusted basis retail sales are actually down. Declining sales will eventually be a headwind to economic growth this year.
The National Association of Home Builders Housing Market Index rose to 50 in May, meaning an equal number of builders have as positive a view of the market as a negative view of the market. Though the figure beat both expectations and April’s reading, the index has been trending under 50 since last August and fell a record twelve months in a row over the entirety of last year.
The housing boom over the past couple of years was mostly in home prices, not in home building, and this report dampens expectations for much new home building leading up to and continuing during the spring season. This report, and the lack of home building in general, suggests that the dire shortage of new home construction is not set to change anytime soon, which is quite a head scratcher considering the extreme dearth of home inventory for sale.
As every lender knows, the inventory of homes for sale has dried up. So, where have the spring home selling seasonals gone? Ask the millions of American homeowners paying 4 percent or less on their mortgages who are deciding to stay put rather than trade up. One-third of housing inventory hitting the market is new construction, compared to historical norms of a little more than 10 percent. The annual rate of home building currently resides at 980k, less than half its 2.3 million average since 2000. Existing home sales are due out tomorrow morning and are expected to drop to a 4.3 million annualized rate, or down 3.2 percent compared to March, which in turn was down 2.4 percent compared to February. It’s rough out there.
After mortgage rates increased last week (even as Treasury yields were essentially flat), mortgage applications decreased 5.7 percent from one week earlier, according to data from MBA. We’ve also received housing starts and building permits for April (). Markets were looking for 1.44 million and 1.46 million compared with 1.42 million and 1.43 million previously. Later today brings a Treasury auction of $15 billion 20-year bonds. We begin the day with the 2-year back up to 4.07, Agency MBS prices better by a few 32nds, and the 10-year yielding 3.52 after closing yesterday at 3.55 percent.
I, and an estimated couple thousand industry execs, head up Manhattan soon. Adam Quinones, Founder of dataQollab and former Head of Mortgages at Refinitiv, has some advice for anyone going to New York for the MBA’s National Secondary. (Part 3 of 5.) “Be careful crossing the street: the yellow cars don’t stop. If you’re hailing a cab, look for yellow tops with their numbers lit up. That means the driver wants a fare. Once you’re in the cab, give the driver a cross street, not an address. “9th and 57th” for example. If you give them an address, they will know you’re a tourist and will be more likely to take you on a joy ride.”

The Christmas season is here and you want fun ideas to do!
To help make your life easier this year, I created a bucket list full of over 100 activities. You can use it as an actual bucket list or just enjoy scrolling through some fun things to do with friends and family before December 25th.
You will find everything from decorating ideas for your home (from simple snowflakes that are easy enough for kids to make) all the way to DIY recipes for Christmas treats.
Who doesn’t love a good list?
This Christmas bucket list is things you can do with your family around the Christmas season to make it more lively and enjoyable.
I made this list for my own kids, but I thought I would share it with you to use it too!
How can you make your Christmas bucket list more fun?
There are many different ways to make your Christmas bucket list more fun.
One way is to focus on new activities that you haven’t done before. Another way is to add food-related activities, which always make Christmas special.
You can also try incorporating some outdoor activities, even if it’s just for a (snowy) day.
And don’t forget about family traditions! They’re a big part of the holidays and can really enhance the experience.
No matter what you do, make sure you enjoy yourself (and not stress yourself out)! The holidays are a time for celebration and should be spent with loved ones. Merry Christmas!
Memorable Christmas Bucket List
While we love the classic Christmas bucket lists, we also are always looking for unique ideas to add to your holiday bucket list.
Some of these out-of-the-box ideas are pretty sweet and you may want to do them year and year again.
You can find everything from baking cookies to attending a German market to spending Christmas at a lodge. No matter what you choose, make sure you keep in touch with your family and friends during the holidays.
1. Go to Mexico. This is one of our Christmas traditions! There is something relaxing about enjoying the beach while Felix Navidad is playing in the background. (Gift hint… all of the beach gifts can be given to be used on the trip.)
2. Book a Wintery Mountain Stay. On the flip side, there is something magical about sipping hot cocoa while by the fireplace when giant snowflakes are falling outside.
3. Participate in a Neighborhood Luminaires Night. Organize one night for all of your neighbors to put luminaries outlining their driveways. It is a symbolic event with neighbors coming together in peace.
4. Roast Chestnuts. Just like in the famous song by Nat King Cole, it is your turn to roast chestnuts on an open fire.
5. Wrap Presents with Friends. For some wrapping presents is fun, for others it is a task. But everything is always sweeter to do with friends, so plan a time to wrap presents with friends. Appetizers and drinks are optional.
6. Order Matching Christmas Pajamas. This is a popular Christmas tradition for most families. Make sure you order your matching Christmas Pajamas in time. Some of my favorite places to find them are Kohl’s, Macy’s, and Amazon.
7.Wear Matching Christmas Pajamas. Depending on the age of your kids and spouse will depend on how well the matching outfits go over. Make sure to snap pictures!!
8.Kiss Under the Mistletoe. This is a fun Christmas tradition for kids and adults. Kids love this because it’s not just kissing their parents on the cheek, but they get to kiss everyone in the room! Adults love this too because it’s a great opportunity to get some alone time with your significant other.
9. Host a Progressive Dinner. This is a great idea to host a fun holiday party. For each course of a meal, you move houses.
For example, you start at house A for appetizers.
Then, move to House B for dinner.
Finally, wrap up at House C for dessert.
If you have more houses participating, then you can easily stretch to a 7-course meal.
10. Buy Ugly Christmas sweaters. This is a love-hate for many people. Are you totally into buying Christmas sweaters or do you want to shy away? Either way, it is always helpful to have at least one ugly Christmas sweater in your closet.
11. And then host an Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. Time to invite all of your introvert friends for an epic ugly sweater party. The winner walks away with a prize!
12. Go to a Christmas Eve Service. If you’re feeling a little more spiritual, there are many churches that offer Christmas Eve services. If it’s your first time going to one, consider this a good opportunity to introduce the whole family and get them interested in going.
13. Classic Christmas Movie Marathon. This is always a popular idea! Especially one that is next to free to do! Pull up the classic movies and enjoy!
14. Read Christmas Books. This is another one that is uber-popular in our house! We try to stick with Christmas-only books in the month of December. One of our favorites is JK Rowling’s latest book!
15. Go on River Cruises. The river is a great place to find some peace and quiet. You can go during the day or at night.
16. Stay Downtown. Whether you are looking in another state or in your own city, you’ll find a new adventure.
17. Snowman Building Competition. Set up a snowman building competition in your neighborhood and let the winners decide what charity to donate the money raised! Bragging rites until the next competition is held.
18. Shake a Snowglobe. Maybe even add to your snowglobe collection. There is a great children’s book called Snow Globe Family. That is a super fun read.
Classic Christmas Bucket List Ideas
This is the list you think of when it comes to Christmas things to do!
Whatever you decide to do this holiday season, make sure it’s something that will create memories that will last a lifetime.
19. Bake Christmas Cookies. This is the classic holiday bucket list idea. Here are some of our favorite Christmas cookie recipes.
20. Watch Christmas Hallmark Movies. Did you know there is a countdown to when the Hallmark Channel releases their Christmas movies?!?! Yes, this is a must-do for many people. In fact, you may want to buy them the same Hallmark socks we gave our moms.
21. Host a Christmas cookie exchange. Yes, please! Cookie exchanges are the best. In fact, it is one of the most popular Christmas challenges.
22. Go Christmas Caroling. Is it a tradition? Or is it just something that you love to do with your friends and family? Bring joy to your neighborhood or nursing home by singing traditional Christmas carols.
23. Volunteer. This could be serving at a soup kitchen, organizing an event for people who can’t afford gifts to “shop,” or lending a hand to a neighbor in need. There are many organizations looking for help.
24. Build a Snowman. Yes, this is the ultimate idea for families. Make sure you have the snowman supplies to dress up your Frosty the Snowman properly. Don’t forget the carrot nose!
25. Build a Gingerbread House. This is a classic activity for many kids and you can easily pick up a gingerbread house kit for under $10. However, it is not just for kids. Check out this family’s gingerbread house display!
26. Christmas Portrait Time. Thankfully, this time of year you can find plenty of Pinterest-perfect backdrops to take portraits at. You can take family photos or one of each person in your house. This accessory helps your amateur photos look professional!
27. Mail Christmas Cards. This may have been a long-standing tradition for many years and slowly making a comeback. You can take Christmas photos just for the occasion or a collage of photos. Order your Christmas cards here.
28. Read Twas the Night Before Christmas. This Christmas classic must be read at least once on Christmas Eve. Grab your copy of the classic book.
29. Find Creative Ideas for Elf of the Shelf. Let’s face it. You jumped on this tradition … hook.line.and.sinker. Now, you must keep up with all of the Pinterest perfect ideas.
Christmas Outdoor Bucket List
Time to get outside and explore. Fresh air is always helpful!
30. Go Sledding. This is a classic bucket list item. Check out a new sledding hill in your neighborhood.
31. Build a Snow Fort. This is personally one of my favorite activities, but Mother Nature must cooperate with tons of snow! Grab some shovels and start building a fort!
32. Snowball Fight Time. Who doesn’t love a good snowball fight?!?! Grab some friends and head out for an epic snowball fight. Even better if you built the snow fort prior to game time!
33. Go Ice Skating. This is a classic especially if you live in the upper midwest. There are plenty of recreation centers that make ice skating a reasonable cost activity.
34. Skiing. Fresh powder sounds like the perfect Christmas tradition. Just make sure to book your ticket early.
35. Plan a Wintery Picnic. Grab a blanket, lunch, some hot cocoa, and your Christmas Pajamas for an outdoor picnic this winter! Make this time special with a special picnic basket to use.
36. Go Snowboarding. Time to shred the slopes. Check out the latest snowboarding gear.
37. Time to Go Tobogganing. What is tobogganing exactly? Much like sledding except you hit the snow-covered slopes and artificial-ice-covered chutes with a toboggan.
38. Give the Gift of Nature. Take your family on an outing to see some beautiful nature! Get out in the fresh air and enjoy the beauty of nature.
39. Make a Snow Angel. This is the perfect activity for kids to do. Yet, very calming and peaceful if you decide to get down in the snow and create snow angels.
40. Hunt for the Perfect Live Tree. Grab your permit and go on a hunt for the perfect Christmas tree. Make sure to bundle up and wear snow boots!
41. Catch Snowflakes on your Tongue. Regardless of your age, this childhood memory needs to be done yearly for your Christmas bucket list. Drop all of your worries off your shoulders as you catch a snowflake on your tongue.
42 Skate on Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks. Skip the indoor rinks and head outside to skate. Even more romantic if the snow is falling.
43. Create a Winter Wonderland. This one is a do-it-yourself project that doesn’t require any crafting skills.
44. Go for a Holiday Walk. Take some time out of the hustle and bustle by taking a walk outside.
45. Neighborhood Christmas Light Competition. Another great idea is to put your home in a Christmas lights competition! This can be really fun if you have friends and family who live close by. All you need is some creative decorations and an appetite for holiday cheer.
Name That Entertainment Holiday Bucket List
Time for friends, laughter, and fun!!

49. Find Entertainment from the Seasonal Classics. This could be watching The Polar Express (it’s on Netflix now!), listening to holiday music, or reading a children’s Christmas book.
50. Host an Advent Calendar Party. It is so much fun to count down the days before Christmas! This works especially well in a classroom setting. Each day is a new activity to count down the days until Christmas.
51. A Christmas Story. Watch A Christmas Story and then read a few of the lines with your friends!
52. Home Acting. Put on your own production of your favorite movie or theater production!
53. Misfit Toys. Collect a variety of small, inexpensive toys and have your guests guess which toy belongs to each guest. To make it more fun, be sure to include some items that are broken or missing pieces!
54. Mistletoe Bingo. Get your guests in the Christmas spirit by setting up a bingo board with different categories for them to fill out!
55. Birthday Party for Jesus. ‘Tis the reason for the season – the birth of Jesus Christ. Plan a birthday party to celebrate everything Jesus gave to us.
56. Holiday Game Night. Christmas is a time for fun and games, so why not have a Christmas-themed game night? Some popular game ideas include playing charades, Pictionary, or Cranium. You could also try some new games that you haven’t played before – like Elf on the Shelf or Monopoly.
Holiday Season Bucket List Around Town
One of the best things about the holiday season is there are SO MANY activities to do with no money. You can find something to do each day for free.
The paid events are classics that create lifelong memories!
57. Book a Limo to Check out Christmas Lights. What better way to enjoy watching the Christmas lights and not having to drive? Personally, this works great when sharing the limo costs with friends!
58. Attend a Local Craft Fair. These craft fairs are becoming a hot place to find personalized gifts. Plus it is a great way to give back to local small businesses as well as the high school teams and clubs who organize the craft fairs.
59. Book Tickets to a Lightshow. This is a hot commodity so make sure to book your tickets early – like around Halloween. That way you will get the prime time you want to attend the light show. Also, many areas have more than one popular light show to see!
60. Attend a Ballet Performace. While the Nutcracker is a popular dance performance, there are plenty of other ballets at this time of year.
61. Watch The Nutcracker Live. I have danced in and seen the Nutcracker so many times that I have lost count. However, I love the production, the costumes, and the music! Make it more magical by taking a young girl who has never seen the Nutcracker before and watching the production through their star-struck eyes.
62. Visit Your Local Christmas Market. Every town has one. A local store stocked with all things Christmas! Maybe even see if your area has a German Christmas Market and check out the varying traditions.
63. Attend a Holiday Tree Lighting Event. Right after Thanksgiving, there are plenty of local tree lighting ceremonies. Check with your city for dates and times.

How can you make your Christmas bucket list more meaningful?
When it comes to the holidays, many people want to do as much as they can.
The Christmas bucket list is often a great way to make sure that you’re able to check off all of the items on your wish list. But sometimes, we can become overwhelmed by all of the things that we want to do. This year, consider making your bucket list more meaningful by doing activities that will bring you happiness and joy.
Idea #1 – Be Happy
One way to make your Christmas bucket list more meaningful is by only including activities that truly make you happy.
For example, if decorating the tree or going shopping for presents isn’t really your thing, then don’t put them down as items that you have to do this year! Instead, focus on doing things like baking cookies with loved ones or taking a walk in the snow.
Idea #2 – Spend Time Together
Another way to make your holiday season more special is by spending time together over a fire. Whether you build one in your backyard or take advantage of one at a local park, this is a great opportunity for conversation and reflection.
Consider lighting the fireplace and reading a good book together–or having some deep conversations about what’s been going on in each other’s lives!
Idea #3 – Make an Advent Calendar
Making your own advent calendar is a fun way to get into the Christmas spirit. You can make it as simple or as complex as you want, but the key is to include activities that will get you excited for the holiday season.
For example, one day you might do an act of service for someone else, and on another day you might bake cookies!
Now, start brainstorming ideas with your family and friends.
Idea #4 – Get Prepared
Take time to figure out what kind of holiday experience you want, which helps narrow down the items on your bucket list.
Another way to make your Christmas bucket list more special is by preparing for Christmas Eve the night before. One great idea is to create a box filled with all of the things you’ll need for the following day. This could include pajamas, breakfast foods, and even some presents!
Use the printable to prioritize which activities your family would like to do during the holidays.
Idea #5 – Make it Personal
Finally, why not add a personal touch to your Christmas this year?
Make your list as personal and meaningful to you as possible by only including activities that are important.
Instead of using store-bought wreaths and ornaments, try making them yourself! There are endless possibilities when it comes to homemade decorations, so get creative and have some fun!

Most of the time when you apply for a life insurance policy, you need to provide a urine sample as part of your medical examination.
This is one way the insurance company reviews your health along with also giving you a short physical, check your medical records, and drawing a blood sample.
There are a few important reasons why insurance companies perform a urinalysis as part of their application process.
Why Do Insurance Companies Use Urinalysis?
Insurance companies usually perform two main types of tests as part of a urinalysis. First, they do a chemical analysis of your urine. This is so they can check for nicotine or illegal drugs in an applicant’s system.
They also perform a microscopic review of your urine to check for a number of diseases and health conditions.
When you apply for a policy, the insurance company will send over a medical professional to give you a quick medical exam. You can usually pick where and when you want to meet.
Part of this exam will be to take a blood and urine sample. The medical professional will then take these samples back to a lab for the actual testing.
Urinalysis Medical Tests
A urinalysis can detect several health problems. First, the insurance company will check whether there is sugar in your urine. This is known as glycosuria and could be a sign of undetected diabetes.
The urinalysis will also review the proteins in your urine for signs of kidney disease. The urinalysis will also check whether red and/or white blood cells are showing up in your urine. Red blood cells could be a sign of a blood disorder or problems with one of your organs. White blood cells could be the sign of an infection.
Beyond these medical tests, the urinalysis also tries to detect traces of nicotine and illegal drugs as some applicants lie about their tobacco and drug use on their applications.
What Happens After the Urinalysis?
The whole medical review process, including the urinalysis, takes some time, usually a few weeks. The insurance company will use the results of the tests plus your medical records to come up with your insurance rating. This will determine whether you qualify for a policy and at what price.
Once the insurance company comes up with your rating, your insurance agent will reach out to you with the decision. If you don’t have any major health problems, you’ll likely qualify for a normal rating or may even get a discounted policy. If the urinalysis or other reviews showed some health problems, you may get a more expensive, rated policy or may be denied coverage.
In all cases, the insurance agent will tell you why the company made its decision so you’ll know if a health problem showed up. If you receive a policy offer, at this point you can decide whether or not you want to buy the coverage.

Can I Avoid the Urinalysis?
While most insurance policies require a urinalysis, not all do. If you are buying a small insurance policy, usually one that is for less than $50,000, the insurance company might not require a urinalysis. They’ll make a decision based only on your medical records.
There are also no medical exam life insurance policies that offer coverage without any sort of testing. These policies are more expensive than regular life insurance because they take on all applicants.
There will also likely be restrictions on your coverage like your coverage only applies if you live at least two years after buying the policy. While no medical exam policies have their flaws, they are a good choice if you can’t qualify for anything else.
However, if you don’t have any serious medical problems, you are better off just applying for a regular policy and going through the urinalysis. It’s a quick test and will ensure that you get the best price for your life insurance.
Calculating your Life Insurance Needs
When you see an ad for life insurance most of them will show a random face value, could be $300K or $500K. It makes sense then that most people assume that is the amount to purchase. But what if your needs are greater? How do you really know that proper amount of insurance to buy? Below we’ll talk through some steps on how you should calculate the exact needs of your family should one of you pass away.
You first need to figure out your current debt situation. How much is left on your mortgage, car loan, and other large expenses that need to be paid off. Adding these up should give you a baseline of the minimum amount of face value to buy.
Once you’ve looked at the major debts you then need to think about the income that will need to be replaced. Because if the insured passes away then your family will be left without a major portion of monthly and yearly salary. So think about multiplying that number by a few years. It should be long enough where you feel comfortable that your survivors will be taken care of in the event of a death.
Aside from having the perfect kind of insurance, you need to guarantee that your family will have the money that they need. Don’t purchase too little and have your family struggle with loads of debt. Take care of the situation today and feel confident you’ve provided them some financial breathing room.
Getting Affordable Life Insurance Coverage
The urinalysis is only one part of the life insurance application. However we need to talk about the other components that add up and affect how much you could end up being quoted for coverage. These tips outline several simple changes that you can make to get that affordable premium.
The first thing that you can do is to start a healthy diet and get regular exercise. Both of these are going to help you get better rates from the medical exam, which is going to translate into lower premiums and more money in your pocket. Getting the recommended amount of exercise every week, and making healthier meal choices can help you shed the pounds needed to help cholesterol levels and risk of heart disease.
We truly believe that your top chance at find affordable coverage lies in finding a helpful, independent insurance advisor. These advisors can put together a list of insurers that are highly rated, and ones that look at your health situation favorably. They also can get you a quote that shows premiums for up to 10 companies at one time! It saves you energy and frustration to reach out to our employees and have them simplify your search. .

When we decided that we were going to start investing more in 2013, I didn’t know where we would find the money in our budget. My personality embraces risk… as long as all our other savings goals are met and our bills are paid. So, because I wanted to have fun investing (and not lose sleep at night), I knew I could not cut our retirement contributions or our savings deposits. What I hoped was that I would find “invisible” money in our budget; money that we spent mindlessly that would now have an investing job.
Our spending record showed me the money
I have recorded our spending for brief periods of time, especially when money was very tight, but I had never done it for a year. I knew it was a good thing to do, but it’s a pain. In 2012, however, I created a spreadsheet and faithfully entered every dollar that we made or were given. I tallied every purchase made by check, debit or credit card and most of the ones made with cash.
I’ll spare you most of the gory details, but we weren’t as smart with our money as we thought we were. Granted, there were things out of our control: Our septic system needed to be replaced, and we had some unexpected medical bills. Most things, though, were in our control, including the ridiculous $36.75 I spent at the vending machine. Even though that’s not a lot of money, it’s more than I thought I spent on Wild Cherry Pepsi.
The numbers didn’t lie. When I said, “We don’t eat out much,” it said, Oh yeah? Well, why don’t you take a look at this little category called “food”? Trim a little from this category and you might trim a lot from your waistline AND have leftovers to invest.
Every minute staring at that spreadsheet was worth it. Just by spending consciously, I can afford to invest $50 each month. I do have some invisible money. So that’s my first tip to you. Keep a record of all the money coming in and all the money going out.
Cut expenses
I still have a landline. Actually, while I’m confessing, I may as well tell you that I still have a rotary phone with something called a cord. It doubles as entertainment for the kids who visit. Can anyone tell me why I am still paying for a phone I don’t answer? Yeah, I don’t know either. Canceling that service leaves me $30 a month to invest. And that’s my second tip. Stop spending money on something that isn’t necessary or isn’t important to you.
Extra money
When I tried to find extra money to invest, I didn’t want to tap my income from my two side gigs, my husband’s side gigs, or either one of our day jobs. We may be able to use those income sources in the future, but 2013 is bringing big changes to our family income and expenses. I’m waiting to see what happens there before we make any investing decisions with that money.
Because that income was safe from this new investing venture, I focused on other income. It was easy to find because, as I said, I kept track of every dime that came into our house. Our random bits of income included things like:
monetary gifts (my Grandparents give us money as our Christmas present)
cash back credit card rewards
cash back rewards from Ebates
mileage reimbursement from work
rebate checks
proceeds from selling stuff
a bonus for opening a new ING checking account
interest on our savings accounts
I never considered the significance of this source of income, because I assumed it was so small.
And each check or deposit was small. But when I added them up at the end of the year, the sum felt greater than its parts. The $10 rebate check, the $45 from Ebates and all the other little checks added up to over $1,200. If you dedicate the tiny income streams in your budget to investing, you’ll probably find more money than you expected, too.
Using money we already have
Our accounts, both our savings and our mortgage, were the last place I looked. Did I have extra money sitting somewhere, money that was not fulfilling a purpose?
Each month, I round up and pay an extra $82 on our mortgage. Given our low interest rate and that we’re ahead on our payments, I could make our minimum payment and invest the $82 instead. I’m still thinking about that.
As you know, my dislike of car loans inspires a $300 monthly contribution to our replacement car savings account. Many of you supported financing a car, because the rates are low and it frees up cash. Stopping that contribution would free up another $300 a month to invest. I’m not ready for this, either. Not yet.
But I am ready to invest money from another account. I opened a Sharebuilder account almost three years ago when I did a little bit of mindless investing which didn’t work out so well. I still wanted to invest, but – unsure how to do it – I set up an automatic $25 contribution to the account. And the money sat there. By now, the account balance is $800. Nothing huge, but it illustrates the effects of small change + time = more money than you imagined. And that’s my last tip. Even if you can’t save/invest as much as you think you should, still do something.
By trimming our budget, practicing conscious spending and keeping track of the little bits of income, I can access $205 a month for investing. I could increase that because it doesn’t even include the $82 extra mortgage payment per month. Or the $800 currently in the Sharebuilder account. Or our regular income and side jobs. At the minimum, it’s about $175 more than I expected.
Even though it is more than I expected, the amount is – no question – small. I am limited with my investment options.
But this exercise had indirect benefits, too. I used to practice conscious spending, but after we paid off our non-mortgage debt, I got a little lazy. Now I have a focus. I could spend this money on x. Or I could invest it. I may find, depending on how this goes, that I have even more to invest.
What do you do with random bits of income? How do you find money to invest?

This is a question that you may find yourself asking this time of year.
It can be hard to ask someone what they would like as it feels kind of weird and embarrassing! Even worse, is actually telling someone exactly what you want.
Many times people are so caught up in their own lives, with work and school, and other things going on, that they don’t know what the best gift to give each other might be! The last thing anyone needs is more stress (or anxiety) around the holidays.
So, I have compiled a list of some ideas for what you might like as a gift this Christmas!
To kickstart this list, I asked around to my besties – both women and men what they really want for Christmas. This list is from real people!
Guaranteed you will find the perfect gift for that someone special on your list!

What do I want on my Christmas list?
When it comes to Christmas lists, it can be tough to figure out what you actually want.
After all, there are so many things to choose from! But don’t worry, we’re here to help.
Consider the five-gift rule:
Something I Want
Something I Need
Something to Wear
Something to Read
Something to Do
Some great gift ideas for Christmas include clothes, books, movies, gift cards, and experiences like a trip or a concert. But remember: these are just suggestions! You should put whatever you want on your list–after all, it’s your Christmas present!
What Do I Want for Christmas?
Hey everyone, it’s that time of year again when we all start to think about what we want for Christmas.
Personally, I’ve been doing a lot of online shopping and have compiled a list of items that I would love to see under the tree on December 25th.
If you’re like me and still haven’t decided on what you want, don’t worry! I’ve got you covered with this ultimate holiday gift guide.
1. Headphones / AirPods
First up are headphones. There are a ton of different options when it comes to headphones, but I love my Apple AirPods I received a few years ago.
The price tags on most of their devices seem steep at first, but you can find some great entry-level ones that offer great quality.
I highly recommend quality headphones for your Christmas wish list.
2. Money
Money is a popular gift option because it offers a lot of flexibility. You can use it to buy anything you want, and it’s always appreciated. Some people find it difficult to ask for money or receive it as a gift, but with the right attitude, it can be a great way to show your loved ones that you care.
One way to give money as a gift is in a brainteaser box. This fun idea turns giving money into a game, and your friends and family will love trying to figure out how to open it.
However, before you can enjoy the benefits of being on the giving or receiving end of money, you need to have realistic expectations.
Money doesn’t buy happiness, and expecting too much from your loved ones can lead to disappointment.
If you’re feeling brave, why not ask for money this Christmas? It’s always better than expecting something expensive from your loved ones. Here are great money gift ideas.
3. Digital Photo Album
One of the favorite features on my phone is when random picture memories pop up! It makes my heart sing!
If you want a unique gift that will always have these happy photo moments, consider a digital photo album.
This is a great way to store and organize all of your photos in one place, and it’s also easy to share with friends and family.
There are many different options when it comes to digital photo albums, so you can find one that fits your needs. For example, if they like to travel a lot, you might want to choose an album that includes GPS tracking so they can always know where their photos were taken. Or if they’re into scrapbooking, find an album that allows them to add text and other elements to their photos.
Whatever option you choose, make sure the digital photo album is easy for your loved ones to use. The last thing you want is for them to be frustrated with trying to navigate through all of their photos!

The heat function can be turned off if desired, or there’s a timer that will automatically shut it off after 10 minutes of use. 7. Shower Bluetooth Speaker
Do you hate having to stop your music or podcast when you go in the shower? If so, I have the perfect solution for you!

67. Go cross-country skiing. Time to get some exercise and burn calories. Cross-country skiing is a great way to get outside and hit your fitness goals.
68. Watch a movie in the snow. How fun does that sound? Thanks to technology you can snuggle up while watching a Christmas classic. Make sure to buy a projector ahead of time!
69. Ride roller coasters. Sounds thrilling, right?!?! But check to see if they are open first.
70. Drive Around to See Christmas Lights. A simple and classic activity to do on Christmas day. Go around and find the best light display!

Do you often get bored of the same old ideas on Christmas Day? The answer to that question is probably a resounding “yes” if your answer has been anything like mine.
Here is a compiled list of relaxing Christmas Day activities for people who are looking to enjoy their day while rejuvenating their souls.
71. Relax and take it easy. There’s no need to stress out about anything – just relax and enjoy yourself!
72. Enjoy a LuxuriousHotBath. Time to destress from the hustle and bustle of the season. Grab some must-have bath essentials to make your experience more spa-like.
73. Treat Yourself. What is one intention you’ve always wanted to do? Buy it for yourself or give yourself the gift of time and allow yourself to enjoy that experience.
74. Escape on a Christmas Vacation. Do you always want to try something new for Christmas? Let’s make this year the best one yet and plan that special Christmas trip!
75. Take a walk in nature. Enjoy the sun and soak up some Vitamin D!
76. At Home Manicure/Pedicure Experience. While it’s not the same as being pampered in the salon, there are many at-home manicure and pedicure sets, that you can use all year round.
77. Personalized Playlist. Spend time finding new songs that revitalize your mind.
78. Stay in Christmas Pajamas. Even better plan matching PJs for the whole family!
79. Spend time cuddling on the couch. A dream come true for a busy mom or dad!
80. Make a List. Make a list of activities to do or places to go that are not centered around Christmas. Focus on items that you are grateful or blessed to have in your life. This will help you avoid the “Xmas” overload and keep you focused on what is really important.
81. Attend a Christmas Eve Service. What is one church in your area that you’ve never visited? Take the opportunity to attend a service on Christmas Eve.
Ways to Show Generosity on Christmas
Giving is always better than receiving.
Christmas is a time of giving, but it can be difficult to know how much you should give.
This doesn’t mean that Christmas has to be all about presents or expensive gifts for your loved ones, but you can still show your gratitude with small acts of kindness. Here are some ways to do that:
82. Volunteer at a Homeless Shelter. This is a great way to serve and be appreciative of what you have been blessed with. Find your nearest homeless shelter and volunteer to serve a meal, or help set up cots for a cold night. Maybe set fundraising parties to help gather monetary donations.
83. Take a Meal to Someone. Many people don’t want to cook on Christmas because they are by themselves or unable to spend hours in the kitchen anymore. Bless them with a cooked meal and your decorated Christmas cookies.
84. Write Thank You Notes. We all know this needs to be done. So, practice writing thank-yous before you start playing and using the gift you received.
85. St. Nick’s Giveaway Day. St Nicholas was known for giving out toys to all the children. Pay it forward by passing along toys, clothes, or other furnishings you don’t need anymore.
86. Be a Santa. Adopt a family for Christmas and provide gifts, food, or other items that they would enjoy.
87. Random Acts of Kindness. Write a list of ways you can bless people with random acts of kindness. Small actions go a long way toward making someone’s day, especially around the holidays.
88. Serve Others. Visit a nursing home or assisted living facility. Bring them cookies, sing Christmas carols with them, read to them and spend time with people who may not have the opportunity to see you on another day.
89. Pray for Others. What is one way to pray on this day that would make someone else’s life better?
Things to Do on Christmas Day for Adults
Christmas is an exciting time of the year, but it can also be a very stressful holiday due to work and family commitments.
There are many different activities that adults can enjoy on Christmas day.
90. Cook a Traditional Meal. One popular option is cooking a traditional Christmas meal. This can be a great way to learn about other cultures and traditions.
91. Ice Skating. There is no shortage of places to go ice skating on Christmas Day.
92. Ugly Sweater Time. Wearing an ugly sweater is always a festive tradition, and it can be especially fun on Christmas Day when everyone else is dressed up too. Just make sure you’re prepared for people to make fun of your outfit!
93. Be Alone. Some people prefer to spend Christmas day alone, either because they don’t have any family nearby or because they simply want some time to themselves. There are plenty of activities that can be done by oneself without requiring any specific skills or knowledge. For example, reading a good book, watching a movie, or taking a walk in the park are all enjoyable ways to spend the day.
Honestly, as an adult, you can choose any of the above activities that would be a perfect way to celebrate Christmas day.
What are some unique or interesting ways to celebrate Christmas day?
There are many unique ways to celebrate Christmas.
Honestly, it comes down to your preferred traditions. This is something you will find over the years about how you want to spend the day.
One popular way is to place an elf in your child’s bedroom to monitor their behavior! Another fun tradition is singing carols or skating on the ice. If you’re looking for something a bit more unique, consider driving down a festive pathway or reconnecting with old friends over dinner.
No matter how you choose to celebrate, make sure to enjoy yourself and have some fun!
More tips for making the most of Christmas day
Christmas is a time for family, friends, and fun.
Christmas day can be a lot of fun, but it’s important to make the most of it!
The best tips for making the most of Christmas day include spending time with your family and having a good time.
Here are some important tips to keep in mind when celebrating.
Tip #1 – Watch for Stressors
Make sure to take a break from the “seasonal grind” and forget to enjoy the holidays yourself.
Before Christmas day arrives, make a list of the stressors you tend to experience on this joyous holiday. Make a conscious decision to avoid the stressors as much as possible. If you cannot completely avoid one of them, then limit your time and plan for decompress time afterward.
Tip #2 – Spend Quality Time with Family
Christmas is a time of celebration and family gatherings.
However, you must make sure you are spending quality time with your loved ones can make the holiday much more enjoyable.
This may be easy or difficult depending on your family situation. Yes, spending time with your family and friends during the holidays is important- especially for kids! Just make sure you can look back and enjoy the day.
Tip #3 – Get Outdoors
On Christmas Day, go outside and enjoy all the fitness opportunities that a cold day has to offer.
Many people stay inside their buildings and homes for the holidays, but outdoor time is actually beneficial. The colder the weather, the better, because when your body is cold even a small outing helps release some of the heat that has been gathering in your body.
Getting outside will help you stay away from any possible triggers, too!
Tip #4 – Spend Less Money
It’s Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year.
Christmas is often a heavy financial burden for many individuals who are required to buy gifts and arrange an evening meal for loved ones.
All the extra expense can sap people of the energy and life they relish in the rest of the year, hence leading to depression which leads to a number of other health complications.
So, plan your Christmas budget ahead of time, so you can walk away happy.
Tip #5 – Remember the True Reason for Christmas
Christmas Day is one day of the year that is meant to be enjoyed and celebrated.
Yet, we tend to forget the true reason for the season – the birth of Jesus Christ.
While we are called to celebrate in community, keep the real reason at the center of your get-togethers with family and friends, and enjoy some of the traditional festivities.
What activities are open on Christmas day?
First of all, before you go, check online or call to see if the business is open.
Typically, you can find convenience stores, gas stations, movie theaters, and some restaurants open on Christmas.
Also, many local attractions may be open as they are focused on the activities they can provide.
Just be prepared for possible long wait times and always be sure to tip well.
Best Holiday Memories for the Season
Ultimately, those are the fun things to do on Christmas day are activities to experience.
Christmas is a time of joys and festivities, giving gifts to friends and family, and decorating your home with Christmas lights or greenery. But the best day always comes when it’s over!
Just remember…
Have Fun!
Remember that Christmas is a time to enjoy and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is not just about shopping, eating, and being with family.
Relax! Take a break from your hectic schedule and enjoy the priceless gifts you have been given.

Know someone else that needs this, too? Then, please share!!
The following is a guest post from Jacob with My Personal Finance Journey.
For quite a while now, I have been a big fan, supporter, and practitioner of passive investing.
In my investing strategy, I set forth a target asset allocation, review my positions once per month, and rebalance if necessary (usually ends up being 1-2 times a year) in order to maintain the appropriate % levels by investing in index mutual funds with Vanguard.
For me, investing in individual stocks is simply too risky, and I don’t trust myself to do it. This is especially true when you consider that 70% or more of investing “professionals” fail to outperform the market.
If most people that devote 10 hours a day to this game can’t do it, what makes me think that I’m special enough to magically outperform the market?
A question that has become a topic of heated debate (especially in the camps of the critics of Mad Money’s Jim Cramer’s stock investing advice) is whether or not stocks picked by non-humans, such as a monkey throwing darts at a board to select stocks, would actually perform better than those chosen by the “pros.”
I think this question has arisen due to the inability (mentioned above) of many investment advisors to beat the market with their stock selections, along with the random-walk hypothesis developed by Burton Malkiel in his book, A Random Walk Down Wall Street.
Regardless of the specific cause of this speculation, it makes for an interesting thought exercise. One thing I recently was interested in particularly was the question below.
What kind of performance would I achieve by basing my buying and selling decisions on a random number generator in Excel?
And furthermore, how would this performance compare to the selections of investing professionals? So, I soldiered off to try to obtain some answers to these questions.
Baseline Market Comparison
In order to obtain a baseline to which to compare the results of my random number generator investment strategy, let’s take a look at how the S&P 500 performed in the ~ 2 months that I conducted this experiment (started on 28-Feb-2011). I chose this date range in 2011 because it coincided with a time when the market pretty much stayed the same. I figured that by choosing a neutral time for the market, the effect of using the random number generator would show through more greatly one way or another.
From 28-Feb-2011 to 22-April-2011, the S&P500 went up 1.33%. While this was not particularly impressive time period for performance by any means, it gives us the baseline we need.
Study Set-Up
Having established our baseline, I then set up the analysis in the following way, assuming an initial value of the portfolio of $1,000:
In an Excel spreadsheet, I would predict the performance for each day that the stock market was open using the random number generator function, =RANDBETWEEN(-1,1).
This function randomly generates one of three integers = 1, 0, or -1. I then correlated each of these integers to a direction of the market, as described below.
1 = Market will go up more than or equal to 0.5% that day. Therefore, I would buy more (5% of total portfolio value) shares of an S&P 500 index fund at the open of the market.
0 = Market will stay the same (change less than +/- 0.5%) that day. Therefore, I would hold all shares and experience whatever fluctuation was dealt by the market that day.
-1 = Market will go down that day more than or equal to 0.5%. Therefore, I would sell all shares at the open of the market in anticipation of the drop and temporarily hold the money in a safe cash account (assume no interest is obtained on the cash account).
After each day’s trading was over, I would record the actual performance of the market to determine whether or not the random number generator predicted correctly and adjust the overall portfolio value accordingly.
Note: Source for all this data was Google Finance. Also, for simplicity, I decided to ignore commissions/trading fees. However, in reality, these would further decrease the returns observed.
You can view the spreadsheet I set up at the Google Docs link below.
Results
The results of this exercise were quite interesting! I’ve summarized the details below:
The random number generator actuallypredicted the correct market movement a pretty impressive 45% of the time!Wow! It was incorrect 55% of the time.
I’m going to get on the soap-box here and propose that if we were to look at the performance of market-timing investment professionals, I’d suspect that they would be correct about the movements around this same 50% of the time.
Out of curiosity, I did some research to try to find some data on the % of times that portfolio managers/investment professionals correctly predict the market, and I was not able to find any specific stats. However, I did find that in order to make money with a market timing strategy, you have to be correct in your predictions 74% of the time. (Source – QuickMBA.com)
The total return (excluding trading fees of course, as mentioned above) was interesting as well. The results showed that NO, you cannot use a random number generator to beat the performance of simply investing in an S&P500 index fund! The specifics of my findings are described below:
Using the buying, selling, and holding system described above in the study set-up, the following results were seen:
Total Amount Invested = $1,801.62
Ending Account Value = $1,136.64
Holdings Sold During Analysis = $675.24
Total Return = +0.57%
So, even though the total return realized with this random number generator market prediction strategy did not beat the market return of +1.33%, it was still in the same ballpark.
In fact, it’s fascinating to me to think that a positive return can be generated by choosing random numbers in the first place, especially during a time when the market didn’t go up very much.
Summary
So, overall, by basing my buying and selling decisions from the results of a random number generator available on any computer worldwide, I was able to achieve a total return slightly less (but still in the same positive percentage range) compared to the S&P 500 index during the same time period (0.57% vs. 1.33%) and correctly predict the market movements 45% of the time.
Because 70% of investing professionals fail to obtain returns on par with the market, this is quite an interesting find! Of course, more long-term analysis would be necessary before I would deploy this strategy with real money. However, it makes one question the effectiveness of active stock picking and market timing and in my mind, strengthens the case for a passive investing approach.
How about you all? Do you use a passive or active investing approach? Have you been satisfied with the success of your approach? What’s your take on the results of this random number generator analysis?
Save more, spend smarter, and make your money go further
Last year this time– right around Halloween – my wallet was stolen from my son’s stroller. (Okay I shouldn’t have placed it in the stroller in the first place, but I never imagined anyone would steal it. It was only slightly visible, tucked inside a pouch.)
You can guess the rest.
In a store elevator, while a woman to my right started talking me up and gushing over my then 1 year old son’s shoes (they were really cute), her quiet accomplice (to my left) crept her fingers into my stroller pouch and nabbed the wallet.
An hour later, when I realized the wallet had disappeared, I rushed home to check my bank and credit card accounts. As expected, the thieves had spared no time. They’d racked up over $500 in charges at the very department store where they’d stolen my wallet. They also purchased a number of monthly subway passes on their way out of the crime scene.
Some serious professionals had defrauded me right in my own neighborhood!
Lesson learned: Keep your wallet out of sight and reach.
But, sadly, wallet theft is not the only way or even the most common way fraudsters can get a hold of our financial accounts. Much of it happens online via hacks or breaches. Fraud devices or “skimmers” at ATM machines and card readers can also be sources of fraud.
This Halloween here’s some advice on how to prevent your financial info from getting in the wrong hands and what to do in case you become a victim of fraud.
Double Down on Password Protection
A wise rule of thumb is to use various passwords for various accounts. Don’t just use one universal password for every website since it makes it all too easy for a fraudster to access your bank accounts, payment sites, etc. if he or she gets ahold of your secret alpha-numeric-symbolic code.
But few of us actually follow that rule of thumb. Nearly three out of four consumers use a duplicate password, many of which haven’t been changed in the last five years, according to a recent survey.
If you’re worried about remembering all your passwords, consider using password management tools that provide a secure and virtual “vault” for all your passwords. LastPass and TrueKey offer free basic memberships.
As for how often should you change your passwords? Do better than every five years, but don’t worry about changing them every month. A study by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found it’s better to change passwords infrequently.
While some sites and offices require you to change your password every few months, this can actually backfire, the study found, because when we are forced to change our passwords so many times we don’t get very creative. We may add a “1” or make a slight variation from the last password. And this makes our passwords all the more predictable to hackers.
In fact, for 17% of the accounts in the study, knowing a user’s previous password let researchers to correctly guess their next password in fewer than 5 guesses.
It’s fine to change your password once or twice a year, as long as it is made of a random variation of text including different cases of letters, numbers and symbols. And stay away from the obvious like your birthdate or a sequence of letters and numbers (e.g. ABC123)
Stick With Credit
You may notice when you go to checkout with a card, you’re now asked to dip instead of swipe. The U.S. recently moved to EMV chip card technology, in an effort to combat counterfeit card fraud. In time paying with a credit card should get safer.
Meantime, if you’re ever wondering whether it’s safer to use a debit or credit card, stick with credit. In the event of fraud, it will be easier to dispute the claims.
According to the Fair Credit Billing Act your maximum liability for fraudulent credit card transactions is $50. But if you report your card lost or stolen prior to fraudulent transactions your liability could even be $0.
With debit card fraud, on the other hand, you’re sometimes at a loss until the claim is resolved. What’s more, if you don’t report your card lost or stolen within sixty days your liability limit is up to $500.
Scan Your Statements
Keep a watchful eye on your accounts. Even if you’re a fan of auto-pay, it’s worth reviewing your bills regularly for unfamiliar charges. Card issuers and banks are getting better at alerting us of suspicious charges, but it’s always helpful to play an active role ourselves, too.
If you suspect your account’s been compromised contact your bank or card company immediately and have them investigate. In the meantime, they may shut off the account and send you a new card with a new account number just to be on the safe side.
Another place to look for red flags is your credit report. You can receive a free credit report from each of the three major credit-reporting agencies – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion – once a year at annualcreditreport.com. If you don’t recognize some of the items on your credit report such as random credit inquiries or unfamiliar card accounts immediately reach out to the credit reporting agency or agencies that’s listing the false information and explain the situation. Here’s a list of their phone numbers:
Experian: 1-888-EXPERIAN or 1-888-397-3742
Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289
You may want to place an extended fraud alert or credit freeze on your account. You can find more information on how to do this on the Federal Trade Commission’s website.
Avoid Random ATM Machines
Fraudsters and ID thieves may secretly install special equipment in credit card readers either at the ATM, gas pump machine or any other card swiping device to capture or “skim” our personal information on our credit or debt card each time we swipe. The reader makes two copies of your credit or debit card information: one to process the transaction and one to later download the information to the ID thieves.
To play it safe, use trusted ATM locations. Your bank branch’s ATM is usually a safe bet, since a security officer or camera often guards it. It’s a lot more difficult for ID thieves to compromise an indoor bank ATM than say, a random ATM on the street corner outside a convenient store.
Trim Down Your Wallet
While it’s not realistic to say, “Don’t carry your credit cards or cash in your wallet,” there are some other sensitive items a few of us DO carry in our wallets that aren’t necessary. The Identity Theft Resource Center recommends five things you should never carry in your wallet including your social security card or even a copy of your social security number, your birth certificate, bank account or routing numbers and password cheat sheets.
It’s best to keep these items tucked away in a safe and hidden place…and by no means in your child’s stroller!

Last week I discussed how I’m surviving living in our unfinished renovation: trying to find places to organize amidst the chaos. Well, one of my best opportunities to do that was with my pantry. First off, I’m still in shock that I actually have a pantry. Nothing has ever made me feel more adult – not having the baby, buying the house…nope. It’s this massive space to organize canned goods that makes me feel like I just might finally have my sh** together. Jury’s still out.
But back to the design! So I have this large room – think of a giant shoe box, but with 10ft ceilings. I wanted the space to be highly functional and serve multiple purposes. Not only is it my primary storage for all food-stuffs, but I also wanted to create additional prep and work space for things like our coffee maker and kitchen tools we use less often like my KitchenAid mixer and my juicer (sadly. I keep swearing I’m going to start using it again!). To say I’m happy with the final result is a major understatement. But I won’t pretend to take all the credit for the final result. I called in the big guns for this job including California Closets to design the storage and Neat Method to help me get myself organized.
But let’s go back to the very beginning. Here’s where there room started out. This goes a whole year+ back to when our walls were still open.
You can kind of make out the frame of the pantry in the middle of the pic.
To make sure this space both worked perfectly and looked amazing I worked with designer Paige Gordon at the Bay Area California Closets to help devise the ultimate storage solution. It was not the easiest of tasks given the relatively narrow space, crazy ceiling height and the massive (original) window at the end of the room. Sadly, all that gorgeous molding actually limited some of our design options as we only had four inches of space along one wall.
To accommodate that, Paige designed a double stack of floor to ceiling shelving on the left hand wall as you enter the doorway. It left a little space between the shelves and the window (how we used it, I’ll get to in a minute). I also wanted to include wine storage because it’s real purdy (and it is how all mothers of toddlers survive). The x-shaped wine boxes Paige designed offer the maximum amount of space and look like a wine cellar. It’s also up off the floor to stay away from tiny fingers. Love.
On the right-hand wall we added closed storage for some of the less pretty things, a section of baskets for things like fruit, potatoes and linens as well counter space that runs wall to wall. Happy dance! A bit of open shelving at a lower height is perfect for things like art & crafts supplies for my kiddo. All the shelving heights are adjustable to accommodate changing storage needs. With this design, the room is fully utilized and maximized. All of the California Closets cabinetry is in white finish with a slight faux wood grain. Like I said about our laundry room, when I think of utilitarian spaces I think white and bright and I’m so happy with the result. But let’s get back to the fun part – the after!
I also wanted to put in open shelving as it’s my favorite thing ever. I turned to a carpenter to create shelves for the space above the California Closet cabinetry. I wanted to use natural wood to warm up the room and match some open shelving that will also go in the kitchen. I’m so thrilled with the result.
When it came to getting my organization game together as it pertains to everything that was actually going into this room, I turned to Neat Method. They are an amazing service staffed with professional organizers that will come to your house, inventory everything you already have, help you figure what else you should have and then devise a plan about how to store it not only effectively (aka easily accessible, easy to see, easy to keep track of what you need), but also to make your organization beautiful. Added bonus: they don’t just tell you how to to it. If you need, they’ll actually do it for you. Hello crazed, overworked, overbooked mom savior from heaven! I mean, just look at my shelves.
This is proof positive that everything looks better decanted. Packaging will just make your eyes cross. I love the uniformity and zen quality of everything being in the same type of container. We may have gone a bit glass jar crazy, but I love it. And each jar is labeled. I went with white written directly on the jar for a more subtle look. Cooking instruction for whatever is inside each jar is simply tucked inside at the back. (The label can be changed with a just a bit of rubbing alcohol). Baskets on the upper shelves contain more random things, cleaning supplies that need to stay out of a toddler’s reach and the stuff I use really infrequently. All organized and labeled of course.
The great thing about a pantry like this, as Lisa Ruff my Neat Method guru explained to me, is that everything is visible. When things are hidden you forget about them and don’t use them. This leads to things going bad and a lot of waste. Now I know what is at my fingertips at all times. All my food stuffs are organized into sections. Nuts, grains, pastas, baking, snacks, canned fruits or veggies. It’s made grocery shopping so much more efficient because now I know exactly what I need and I can avoid the annoyance of being in the middle of a recipe and not having a necessary ingredient.
Now I also have space for paper goods and my ever-growing collection of pitchers and vases. It is so amazing to finally have places for all that stuff to go!
One of my favorite moments in the room is right as you walk in the door. Just to your left I hung picture rail shelves to display my collection of cookbooks. It’s so fun to get to see the covers because that’s why you buy a cookbook half the time anyway, am I right? While I started with three shelves, my collection is so big I’m thinking I’m going to have to add a couple more above. Thank goodness for step ladders!
So there you have it. While the rest of my house looks like we moved in yesterday (not nearly 5 months ago), my pantry is currently my little happy place. I may just go and stand in there from time to time. No judgements.
Oh and if you are in need of some organization help, right now you can get a FREE consultation from the Neat Method. Just mention Apartment 34 when you contact them (which you can do right here).
