Move over, coastal grandma, and say hello to eclectic grandpa, the latest nostalgia-fueled style taking the design and fashion world by storm. According to a Pinterest trend report, “grandpacore,” so to speak, is majorly in vogue, which makes total sense, given that vintage finds, academia-inspired accessories, and menswear fashions have experienced a major resurgence for the past several years. Bring on the cardigans, retro patterns, and leather accessories! This trend isn’t just for your wardrobe, however. In fact, we’d argue it’s even more fun to work into your home. Read on to learn all about this 2024 trend and how to pull it off in your space.
What Is the Eclectic Grandpa Trend?
Is it weird that the first person I pictured when I heard the phrase “eclectic grandpa” is the Grandfather character from The Parent Trap? I mean, he’s just the epitome of this aesthetic. Always smartly dressed in some sort of thick knit blazer, he spends his days reading the newspaper in a wood-paneled study filled with books (with a crystal decanter nearby, because obviously). His character is just the right amount of quirky without being overly so.
To translate that same vibe into your home, it’s all about warm wood tones, vintage finds, classic patterns, and accessories that tell a story. Basically, you can think of the eclectic grandpa style as being coastal grandmother’s funkier, more masculine cousin.
How to Get the Grandpacore Look in Your Home
If you’re eager to embrace this look in your home, here are some of our favorite ways to lean into the eclectic grandpa aesthetic.
Drape a plaid blanket over the sofa
If there’s one pattern that just screams eclectic grandpa, it’s plaid. For an easy, inexpensive way to introduce this pattern into your home, pick up a plaid throw blanket to drape over your sofa or at the end of your bed. Even better if you order one with your monogram, given that there’s nothing more grandpa-like than monogrammed linens.

Work dark wood tones into your home
Dark, rich wood tones are an eclectic grandpa must. To lean into this look without buying all new furniture, start with a classic wooden tray with a bit of funky flair. Use it to organize your work-from-home station or place it on your dresser to house perfumes and everyday hair and makeup products.

Jazz up your sofa with sweater-inspired pillows
Every eclectic grandpa has a soft spot for a good sweater. When shopping for throw pillows, look for cozy sweater-like materials like wool, woven knits, or embroidered designs. For an even funkier touch, the Etsy find below featuring the Ralph Lauren Polo bear is about as eclectic grandpa as it gets—it will surely be a conversation starter and will cozy up your space in an instant.

Style a leather valet tray
Vintage leather and eclectic grandpa style simply go hand in hand, and a leather valet tray is the perfect way to try out the trend. Take to the flea market (or just Etsy!) in search of a piece that you’ll be excited to style on your desk or an entryway table. These are great for corraling small items like your keys, jewelry, lip balm, and more.

Decorate with vintage ashtrays
If you’re anything like me, you aren’t a smoker but absolutely love keeping ashtrays on hand throughout your home regardless. We all know that any eclectic grandpa loves a good ashtray, too, so it’s time to build out your collection while embracing this style trend. I personally use ashtrays as bases for candles (they make your average vessel look extra luxe) and place them on my nightstand to corral jewelry or on my coffee table to hold matchbooks and other small trinkets. Etsy is a great place to browse for vintage ashtrays of all kinds. These look like they could’ve actually belonged to your grandfather at one point (in the best way possible, of course).

Display a large trunk
The grandpacore life involves lots of slow mornings spent at home with plenty of reading material. If you want to go beyond a classic magazine rack, stash your magazine collection inside a vintage-looking trunk or one made from woven materials (these are also great solutions for shoe storage, extra linens, small purses, you name it). Pretend it’s a piece that’s lived inside of your apartment for decades on end—it beats any modern acrylic bin.
Like some of the brand’s trendy outfits, the Forever 21 Credit Card comes in more than one variety. One version can be used with the retailer only, and the other can be used wherever Visa is accepted. Both versions pack rewards and perks that could enhance your wardrobe, but only if you stay on top of expiration dates.
Neither version beats the flexibility of a general rewards credit card, which won’t limit you to shopping or earning rewards with just one retailer, and will have a longer window to make the most of those rewards. Still, the Forever 21 Credit Card can offer free shipping, plus birthday and anniversary incentives, so weigh the value of these benefits to determine whether it’s a good fit.
Here’s what you need to know about the Forever 21 Credit Card.
1. It features decent introductory offers
Compared with some other store credit cards, the Forever 21 Credit Card has fairly generous offers for new cardholders. You can get 20% off your first purchase when the card is used on the same day you open the account. There’s also an opportunity for 15% off when you receive the Forever 21 Credit Card.
These discounts can add up to significant savings, but depending on the amount spent, you can likely do better. The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card, for example, can allow more time and flexibility to earn its sign-up offer: Earn a $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first 3 months. While you won’t get the bonus immediately, this card offers more time to budget, and you can earn by paying for everyday expenses. On top of that, you’ll also get a 0% intro APR on Purchases for 15 months and 0% intro APR on Balance Transfers 15 months from account opening on qualifying balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% Variable APR.
2. But ongoing rewards have a limited shelf life
Rewards vary depending on the version of the card. With either version, you’ll earn 3 points per $1 spent with the retailer in stores or online. The Visa card also earns 2 points per $1 spent on qualifying restaurant purchases and 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases.
For every 300 points earned, you’ll automatically get a $5 rewards certificate to be used at Forever 21. That means points are worth a better-than-average 1.6 cents each. The problem, though, is that you can’t bank rewards, and those certificates expire 60 days from the date issued. (Points expire 24 months after posting.) So you may end up having to use reward certificates regardless of whether you actually need a new outfit or accessories.
The certificate is printed on your monthly statement or sent via email with a barcode, according to Lindsey LeBerth, senior manager of corporate affairs at Bread Financial, the bank that issues the Forever 21 Credit Card. Your Forever 21 account will also grant access to your rewards.
For online shoppers, for instance, the $0-annual-fee Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express earns 3% back on U.S. online retail purchases, on up to $6,000 per year, then 1%, and rewards in everyday categories. And as long as the card is active, your rewards don’t expire. Terms apply; see rates and fees.
🤓Nerdy Tip
In-store shoppers who frequent a Forever 21 located inside a Simon Mall might want to consider the $0-annual-fee Simon credit card, which offers cash back on in-person transactions within Simon’s nearly 200 U.S. properties.
3. You’ll have access to some perks
As a Forever 21 cardholder, you’ll get access to some snazzy ongoing perks. On your card anniversary and the retailer’s birthday in April, you’ll get 21% off. On your own birthday, you get a $10 discount on a purchase of a minimum of $25. Terms apply.
You’ll also get access to free standard shipping, events and exclusive offers. General-purpose rewards credit cards don’t typically provide these kinds of store incentives — although, again, they tend to offer richer and more flexible rewards.
4. The high APR is unfashionable
As of this writing, the Forever 21 Credit Card was charging a sky-high interest rate north of 33%. For comparison, the national average rate on credit cards that assessed interest as of August 2023 was significantly lower at 22.77%, according to Federal Reserve data.
It’s not uncommon for store credit cards to have high interest rates, but just know that if you tend to carry a balance month to month, this card will get expensive quickly.
A credit card at a credit union will save you more money, but it may take some minor effort to join and become a member. The $0-annual-fee PenFed Power Cash Rewards Visa Signature® Card, for example, earns 1.5% cash back on all purchases, and it has a 0% introductory APR for 12 months on balance transfers made in the first 90 days after account opening. After that, the APR for the unpaid balance and any new balance transfers will be a non-variable rate of 17.99%. But regardless of what credit card you have, do what you can to pay it off in full each month so you never have to worry about the APR.
5. Promotional offers may occasionally be available
The Forever 21 Credit Card’s terms and conditions state that the issuer occasionally offers special financing terms such as deferred interest, waived interest, a low APR or equal payment options.
It’s important to always read the terms and conditions to understand what’s being offered. For instance, deferred interest promotions are typically advertised as “no interest if paid in full by” a certain amount of time. This means that interest continues to accrue in the background during the promotional window, and if the entire balance isn’t paid by the time the promotion expires, you’re on the hook for interest charges dating back to the original purchase. With this card’s high interest rate, it could derail your budget or lead to debt if you’re not prepared to cover that cost.
For a true 0% introductory promotion — which, when it ends, will charge you interest only on your remaining balance at that time — consider the introductory offers listed above for the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card or Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express.
The discounts reflected in these deals may no longer be available.

There’s no universally right or wrong way to dress for an interview. It’s all about wearing crisp, clean clothing that matches the employer’s dress code and expectations, experts say.
Below, we’ll discuss how to pick your interview attire, the different types of professional dress codes and what to avoid wearing to an interview.
What to wear to an interview
Check the company’s dress code when deciding what to wear to an interview, recommends Purdue Global, an online university in the Purdue University system.
Look for photos of employees, either in the office or in a company photo, on the company’s website or LinkedIn page. Note how they’re dressed and whether they’re posing formally or casually.
Unless its employees wear a uniform, most companies adhere to one of these three dress codes:smart casual, business casual or business professional.
Consider the industry you’re interviewing in. Companies in law, finance or politics tend to adhere to more traditional dress codes. Tech or media companies tend to have more casual dress codes.
If you’re interviewing for a job that would require a uniform, including in a retail, restaurant, gym or medical setting, opt for business casual for those job interviews, recommends Coursera, a company that hosts open courses from universities and organizations online.
Dress for a position one level higher than the job you’re interviewing for, experts recommend. So, if most employees wear chinos and a casual button-down shirt, for example, go for slacks, a tucked-in shirt and a blazer.
Ask your interviewer about the company’s dress code if you’re still unsure of what to wear. If you’re working with a recruiter, you can plainly ask for advice on what to wear to an interview.
If you’d be asking the company’s hiring manager, consider asking, “How do employees dress in the office?” or “What kind of clothing is appropriate for this workplace?”
What is a smart casual dress code?
Smart casual is the most informal of the three professional dress codes. It emerged in recent years as more companies loosened their dress codes, per the Society for Human Resource Management.
Smart casual is relaxed but polished. You could wear trendier clothing and accessories from your personal wardrobe as long as they’re fit for a professional environment.
Companies in newer or creative industries — such as tech, media or advertising — may adhere to this dress code. Examples of smart casual workwear include:
Well-fitting pants — chinos, pleated pants or linen pants.
Dark blue or black jeans.
Sweaters, henleys, button-up shirts, or trendy blouses.
Loafers, flats or clean tennis shoes.
A clean, ironed T-shirt under a blazer.
Solid colors or stylish patterns.
What is a business casual dress code?
Business casual is more formal and conservative than smart casual but still doesn’t require you to wear a full suit.
Businesses across many different industries adhere to this dress code. It’s a popular dress code among employers and is considered appropriate for job fairs, networking events or professional meetings.
Business casual workwear can look like:
Chinos, khakis or dress pants and a belt.
A clean button-up, dress shirt, formal blouse or tucked-in polo shirt.
Closed-toe shoes, like Oxfords, brogues, loafers or flats.
A blazer.
Solid, neutral colors with minimal patterns.
What is a business professional dress code?
Business professional is the dressiest of the professional dress codes.
Older, more traditional industries — such as law, finance, professional services or politics — tend to adopt a business professional dress code. Executives and other high-ranking employees may also adhere to this dress code.
Some examples of business professional workwear include:
A suit and dress shirt.
Tailored pants, a dress shirt and a tie.
A dressy business skirt and formal blouse.
Heels, dress shoes or formal loafers.
Conservative, non-distracting jewelry and accessories.
Dark, solid colors, such as blue, black or gray.
What not to wear to an interview
Unless you’re interviewing at a beachside surf shop, avoid these items of clothing, according to Zippia, an online recruiting and careers platform:
Graphic T-shirts.
Casual sandals or flip flops.
Tank tops or sleeveless shirts.
Athleisure, sweats or pajamas.
Ripped jeans or pants.
The quality of your clothing is also important. Don’t wear items that:
Are stained or soiled.
Have holes or tears.
Are unwashed or dirty.
Are visibly old, faded or worn.
Outside of your clothing, pay close attention to your personal grooming. Career experts recommend you run through this checklist list before you leave for the interview:
Hair is brushed or neatly combed and styled.
Fingernails are clean.
Deodorant has been applied.
Shoes are clean and free of mud or dirt.
One more tip
It’s important to wear clothing that aligns with the employer’s dress code, but that’s not the only thing that matters.
What you wear can help you feel comfortable and confident. And wearing clothing that shows off your personality can help people at the company get to know you.
So, if you feel a yellow blouse mirrors your sunny disposition, go for a shade that’s cheery but not neon. Striking that right balance can be tricky but it’s worth the effort. It’s like the old saying goes: look good, feel good.
The Express credit card, issued by Comenity Bank, is expressly mediocre.
It can help you pay for a new wardrobe at the clothing retailer, but its usefulness is limited beyond that, especially given its high interest rate and narrow redemption options.
There’s no annual fee, and the card earns an eye-catching 20 to 25 points per $1 spent. But those figures aren’t as rewarding as they sound, and the card’s drawbacks easily outweigh these benefits.
Here are five things to know about the Express credit card.
1. It can be used only at Express
The Express credit card is a “closed-loop” product, meaning it can be used only to make purchases at Express, Express.com or Express Factory Outlets. For a more versatile card that you can use (and earn rewards with) anywhere, check out our list of best cash-back credit cards.
2. The interest rate is dizzying
The interest rate, or purchase APR, on the Express credit card topped 32% as of December 2023. That’s almost 10 percentage points higher than the average interest rate on all interest-accruing credit cards in August 2023, per the Federal Reserve.
An APR that high will make carrying a balance from month to month an expensive proposition. If possible, pay off the balance in full, or you could end up owing far above the sticker price for those new clothes.
If you need to finance an expensive wardrobe over time, consider a credit card with a 0% intro APR offer. The Wells Fargo Reflect® Card, for example, offers 0% intro APR for 21 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 18.24%, 24.74%, or 29.99% Variable APR.
3. The welcome offer is meager
If you’re approved for the Express credit card, you’ll get a 20% discount off the first Express purchase charged to the card. However, the discount must be used on the same day you apply and are approved for the card. This welcome offer may seem enticing when you’re at the cash register, moments away from taking home your Express haul, but it pales in comparison to bonuses on other credit cards, which can be worth a few hundred dollars.
For example, the $0-annual-fee Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express has this welcome offer: Earn a $200 statement credit after you spend $2,000 in purchases on your new Card within the first 6 months. Terms Apply. It also earns, among other things, 3% cash back on U.S. online retail purchases up to $6,000 spent per year, then 1%. Terms apply; see rates and fees.
This card would be a superior pick to the Express credit card if you have the credit score to qualify and are willing to shop online.
4. Cardholders get perks within the Express loyalty program
Express’ loyalty program, Express Insider, has three tiers: Insider, Influencer and A-List. If you have the Express credit card, you’re automatically enrolled in the program and elevated to the Influencer level.
Influencers get 20 points for every dollar spent at Express and Express Factory Outlets, a $20 birthday gift, and free U.S. standard shipping and returns.
To make it to A-List status, you’ll need to earn 10,000 points, the equivalent of spending $500. A-Listers also get free shipping and returns, but they earn 25 points per $1 spent and get a $40 birthday gift.
Unredeemed points expire after 12 months from the date they were earned.
5. Reward redemption is automatic, but point values are poor
Redeeming rewards earned with the Express credit card is effortless, but that’s because there’s only one option: Points earned with the Express card are redeemable for Express Cash certificates, which can be used toward future Express purchases.
Cardholders will automatically receive $5 in Express Cash once they accumulate 1,250 points, sent to their Insider account. That means that 1 point is worth a measly 0.04 cent, far less than the standard 1 cent per point.
Express Cash certificates are valid for a minimum of 60 days after their issue date, but even still, “banking” them up for a big purchase might be difficult if you don’t visit the retailer that often.

Considering women make up 51 percent of the U.S. population, female consumer trends have a strong influence on the economy. Collectively they make up a sizable growth market that can’t be ignored.
Women are increasingly invested in the quality of the items they buy and how well they fit their lifestyle. Since they’re more likely to shoulder the responsibility for things like household purchases, grocery shopping and meal preparation, convenience is a high priority in women’s spending habits and something they seek out in their everyday lives.
Businesses that fail to understand the unique characteristics of female consumers are ultimately losing out on a valuable market. Greater effort will be required to keep up with the evolving consumer landscape that is driven largely by women. By analyzing the statistics associated with women’s spending habits, we can gain insight into their preferences, values and thought processes when it comes to what and how they buy. Read on to learn more.
Note: We reference the most updated data available, but sometimes that information is from several years ago—check each individual source for specifics.
Table of contents:
An overview of female consumer trends
The impact of female consumerism in the U.S. is hard to understate, as they make the majority of all consumer purchases. This could be attributed to the fact that women often buy not only for themselves but also for their families and children.
With women leading the majority of household purchases, retailers could benefit from focusing on how they can best serve the vast number of female consumers who stimulate their sales year after year.

Men’s vs. women’s spending habits
There are often notable differences between the minds of men and women, including what motivates them when it comes to their spending habits. While neither gender can be placed in a box and a broad range of characteristics exist for each, there are general patterns that can shed light on their financial lives and choices.
The answer to the question “Do women shop more than men?” is a bit complex. Women are often far more selective in their purchases than men and are willing to spend the time necessary to find products that fit their needs and requirements. While men are usually more straightforward and goal-oriented in their shopping, women are more detail-oriented, paying attention to the quality of an item before purchasing. The majority of men prefer to get in and get out of a store as quickly as possible, while women generally enjoy the shopping process as a whole.
Female buying behaviors indicate that they want a risk-free and convenient shopping experience, which goes hand in hand with their desire for their purchases to enhance their lifestyles. They frequently prioritize ensuring that their purchases check every box and fulfill their needs, and usually spend more time than men making sure of this before spending any money.

Online vs. in-store shopping habits
While the digital shopping landscape continues to grow more robust and popular with each passing year, women are still making more in-store purchases than they are online. However, even though women consumers are more inclined to spend more in-store, they aren’t as inclined to visit a store in person unless they have a specific purchase in mind. Retailers can capture this opportunity by making sure they’re offering the exact products women are specifically searching for when they visit a store.

What consumer goods are women buying?
With data pointing to women as most often responsible for the majority of grocery shopping and meal preparation, the food industry represents a significant opportunity for companies to find ways to connect with their female consumers.
Women also spend significant amounts on beauty products, clothes and travel. With clothing ranking as a top spending category among women, the continued evolution of the retail world represents a chance to lean further into the habits of women consumers.
Beauty and skin care spending
Women have historically spent a considerable amount on personal care, cosmetics and skin care, and it’s no different today. While makeup and beauty products aren’t a part of every woman’s routine, almost everyone uses some type of skin care product—even if it’s just sunscreen or hand lotion. This sheds some light on the astonishing size and increasing growth of the skin care market, particularly among women.
While older consumers used to lead the demand for products in these industries, an increasing number of younger women now play a significant part. This could explain the shift in the market, indicating women’s increasing desire for more natural and organic products, which continues to go up as consumers become more knowledgeable about toxic ingredients in their products and factors like sun damage. Cosmetics and skin care brands that recognize these emerging values among their consumers will outgrow those that don’t.

Household and grocery spending
Data shows that women do the majority of household spending, grocery shopping and meal preparation. With women generally spending more time on household duties than men, it’s no surprise that much of their spending is allocated to these categories.

Clothing spending
Clothes have always been a large category of spend among women. The market value for women’s retail is expected to rise to around $394 billion by 2025, and retailers are becoming more aware of what women want in their clothing. They value versatility and functionality without sacrificing function and utilize their fashion choices as a source of empowerment and confidence.
Growth in the retail industry among women could be due to the fact that economically empowered female consumers who maintain the majority of control of spending in American homes have more purchasing power, much of which continues to be allocated toward clothes.
Digital trends are also impacting women’s shopping habits, and almost three-quarters of women now shop online. Women are increasingly utilizing social media platforms for fashion discovery, product inspiration and finding authentic reviews from their peers online.

Women’s purchasing values
Diversity and inclusion factors have a larger impact than ever on women’s shopping decisions and expectations. With diversity and inclusivity growing increasingly important in the world of retail and beyond, women consumers expect brands to evolve with the cultures they serve. Among women today there is more scrutiny of brands’ and retailers’ values, hiring practices, product-to-market placements and ability to truly listen to their customers.
Women, like all people, are driven by their values and habits, so understanding what’s important to them, what their day-to-day lives look like and what makes them unique is crucial in fostering a true connection that might influence purchasing behavior.

Opportunities for financial success
Women who are active in their own financial planning are less stressed on average than those who avoid it. There are many ways to prioritize financial success such as committing to your retirement savings, learning investment strategies and managing your personal credit and debt.
Managing credit card debt or poor credit is an important starting point on the road to financial success. Taking responsibility for debt or bad credit will help you secure a more prosperous financial future, and utilizing the help of a credit repair team could help you manage the process. If you are a woman moving toward financial independence, know that it’s never too late to take steps toward a brighter financial future.

As fab fashionistas, agile antiquers, super shoppers, and those who live for a good find are well aware, the wildly popular Round Top Antiques Fair is back for another week and weekend of some the hottest shopping in Texas, U.S. — and heck, the world.
Texas’ antique mecca, boasting a permanent population of 99, draws hundreds of thousands from across the globe twice a year for the shows. As expected, hotels and Airbnbs book months in advance, but that doesn’t stop locals from Houston and nearby cities from making a day trip. Those who pack up for the Round Top roadie are rewarded with new hot spots for food, drink, entertainment, and — obvi — shopping.
With that in mind, we’ve rounded up some of our old faves from previous trips and solicited friend and guru — let’s call her “Round Top Angie” for top shops and, thanks to Angie, the IYKYK spots where the locals like to hang.
And since Round Top weekends are as much being seen as seeing, read on for our fashion writer Gabi De la Rosa’s guide to can’t-miss fashion and shopping — especially for Houstonians.
Shop Round Top
The Original Round Top Antiques Fair, created by Emma Lee Turney in 1968, remains the epicenter of what is now known at The Antiques Show. Thousands hit Round Top last week to shop the more than 65 venues along the rural TX-237 highway and beyond.
Now through October 29 barns, tents and hayfields are home to authentic antiques, fine art, home decor, and more.
The Big Red Barn and Blue Hills
The Big Red Barn (475 Texas 237) functions as the primary Antiques Fair venue and is a massive, climate-controlled building that is unmistakable to passersby as it’s literally a giant red barn. The Annex and Continental Tent are both located adjacent to the Big Red Barn and add to the overall ambiance and sheer shopping bliss that overtakes the town during these precious fall weekends.
Where it all started over 50 years ago, the Big Red Barn will be open through October 28.
Photo by The Big Red Barn
Not far from the Big Red Barn is its sister venue, Blue Hills (1701 Texas 237), a rustic, antiques mega complex, as they approach on 237. A must-stop for any serious shopper, the destination boasts 26 acres, more than 60 vendors from around the world, and 100,000 square feet of shopping space. Hot brands and partner collabs, must-see pieces, easy access off 237, clean bathrooms, and ample free parking make this a no-brainer. Plan to spend some serious time — and money — here.
Henkel Square Market
One of Round Top’s most iconic historic squares has been reborn as a shopping, dining, bar, and gallery space that now goes by Henkel Square Market. Easily one of the town’s most popular tourist destinations, the market featuers the newly opened Kemo Sabe, the chic Texas bootmaker that helps fashion-focused shoppers step into Round Top chic with ease.
One could spend hours at Southern Beasts, where the clever Mary Lou Marks (who chats up visitors and recognizes shoppers from months and years prior) crafts whimsical animals out of vivid upholstery. We scooped up vintage headbands and bracelets and lusted over the vintage cowboy hats and gear and one-of-a-kind paintings. Upstairs, the clever folks at Starr’z hunt all over for retro mid-century modern furnishings jewelry, handbags, decorative pieces.
Next door is the exotic Sapana Dreams, (translated to “dream” in Nepali), where owner Jolie Helms curates and imports outerwear, vests, quilts, totes, and more from India and Nepal — all while empowering the impoverished crafters in those countries. A familiar Houston retail name, Helms is passionate about educating shoppers about the plight of those who create the goods for her first solo store — all while customers leave with some serious statement pieces.
A quick jaunt leads to our favorite Round Top art store, Humble Donkey Studio, a crafty playground founded by John Lowery, a former Houston marketing CEO who has turned his passion for Texan and animal-themed art into a two-story mecca of charm. Lowery celebrates in-store sales of his large paintings (in demand across the country) with wine, cowbell ringing, and the declaration that “a donkey got its wings.” We grabbed hats, small works, and even a Texas-themed doormat from the exclusive Lower40 collection.
Stylish Houstonians always make a beeline for haute Houstonian/Round Top resident Marla Hurley’s chic boutique Modernmarla, where serious shoppers can grab luxe-label shoes, accessories, clothes, and more. (Be sure to score a cheeky “Kiss My Fancy Texas A*s” T-shirt for a Lone Star look that’s totally extra.) More looks can be found at upscale jewelry destination Mallory et Cie.
Rockin’ Round Top: The 550 Market and Rockabilly Baroness
To really shop like the locals, head to The 550 Market, a cool destination that hosts pop-up parties, activations, and event a speakeasy. Those looking to rock the outlaw/rock star vibe should head to Rockabilly Baroness, The 550’s anchor space. Much like its Houston sister store the Round Top outpost offers up must-have boots to gorgeous bags – all meticulously crafted with the fine hides, exotic skins, imported leathers, and intricate beading. Consider this the one-stop show for rocker-cowboy-cowgirl chic.
Rockabilly Baroness saddles up your inner cowgirl rock star.Rockabilly Baroness
Round Top Village
Round Top Village meanwhile, showcases a mix of local handcrafted jewelry, women’s wardrobe staples, hand-poured luxury candles, exotic linens and wares, a plethora of antique vintage finds, and furniture pieces scattered throughout the shops. Look for an entire shop devoted to primitive and American farmhouse antiques. Vendors at Round Top Village include Richard Schmidt Jewelry, Simple Rags, Courtney Barton, Tutu and Lilli, Muse Collective Jewelry, Bella’s Candles, Cottonseed Trading Co, and Round Top RV Park.
Gasoline Hill & Antiques
A go-to shop for visitors looking for the cleanest porcelain and painted metal advertising on the market; inventory includes a unique mix of vintage advertising memorabilia, such as old gas pumps, oil and automotive signs, and much more. The seller takes pride in displaying items that are originals, not replicas. On top of its authentic vintage signs, look for reclaimed industrial, architectural, and contemporary furniture and accessories from all over the world. Grab some country store items like bread, dairy goods, and more.

Lulu’s Italian restaurant and ll Cuculo bar at Hotel Lulu
Nestled just outside the bustling Henkel Square, Hotel Lulu has become a go-to for urbane visitors who stay for the scenic vistas (we fell in love with the neighboring barn characters, namely a charming donkey, bull, and some alpacas). The red-hot, in-house restaurant Lulu’s is the Italian-focused sister restaurant to the Houston locale. (Reflecting the tony crowd that favorites Armando’s, the scene at Hotel Lulu and Lulu’s is cosmopolitan, with patrons decked out in vacation chic.)
Rejoice: The beloved Lulu’s now serves breakfast.Photo via Lulu’s Round Top
Executive chef Jose Monterrosa has answered regulars’ repeated for breakfast service; find delicious starter meals here starting at 8 am. Those rising a little later can enjoy brunch, which features many lunch and dinner items. We loved the country-table-themed Uova in Purgatoria, where a farm-fresh fried egg sits in a bed of delicious red sugo sauce. Carnivores can power up with the steak and eggs, adorned with a chimichurri sauce; all go well with bloody marys, mimosas, and fresh bellinis. We ended brunch with an irresistible combo of gelato and bombolini, Italian doughnuts with crème anglaise.
Pasta dishes at Lulu’s are wildly popular, especially the carbonara, a perfectly cooked fried egg with a healthy, orange yolk centering the dish. Caviar is a good starter, and the bread service is so divine it could potentially be a meal paired with fresh butter and a full-bodied red wine. Grilled branzino and a beefy tenderloin make excellent choices for proteins, while tiramisu and gelato are sweet finishes.
Lulu’s downstairs dining room, chiseled in central Texas rock, is also worth a peek, as it’s a favorite for private parties.
For a refined sip, Hotel Lulu’s perfectly picturesque ll Cuculo bar is an absolute must-visit for pre or post-dinner cocktails, after a day out, or a romantic date night. The main bar is striking with its deep wood and blue accents, while a curtained seating area — vibrant and velvet-adorned — sports plush seating with swoon-worthy upholstery. In a city full of Instagrammable scenes, this elegant spot is photo-shoot ready.
Merritt Meat Company
The owners of Truth Barbecue, a smokin’ Houston favorite that scored top marks in Texas Monthly‘s best BBQ list, purchased Roundtop Smokehouse in Henkel Square and reopened the space to honor Lee Ellis (Merritt is his middle name). As any Houstonian knows, Truth’s brisket and sausage can disappear in minutes, not hours. Those wanting to meat up best show up early and expect lines.
Duo Modern in Market Hill
Market Hill owner Paul Michael wanted a space in his chic retail destination Market Hill where Round Top shoppers could share stories and meals. Enter the stylish Duo Modern, which features haute furnishings from Market Hill. Look for roasted sea bass, breaded branzino , oven-roasted lobster tail, rigatoni pasta, grilled beef tenderloin, a grilled pork chop, a crowd-favorite rack of lamb, and more. As expected with a Paul Michael operation, Duo Modern’s ambience is urbane, stylish, and comforting.
Ellis Motel
Created by the late restaurateur and namesake the Ellis Motel isn’t actually a motel. Instead, the Ellis Motel Lounge and Emporium has become on of Round Top’s hottest hangouts. Inside of a welcoming bungalow dating back to the 1800s, the outpost boasts an eclectic mix of art and furniture for sale. While browsing, sip on some of the best cocktails in Round Top.
Royer’s Café and Pie Haven
Royers Pie Haven in Round Top.
Royers Pie Haven Facbook
Led by JB and Jamie-Len Royer, the team at the iconic — legendary, really — Royer’s Round Top Café is all about love, customer service and lasting relationships. Upon walking through the doors of the funky, iconic establishment in Round Top, diners are greeted with a menu that will surprise and delight. Instead of the ‘typical’ small town country fare, expect what they call gourmet country food. The Pie Henkel Square Market serves up divine, freshly baked pies — grab one or three for the trip home.
Food Truck Alley at Blue Hills
Those shopping at the Blue Hills Food Truck Alley can expect a feast of options. The checklist includes Dapper Bear Seafood, Tumbleweed Food Company, Vela Farms, and Wildflyer Mead Co. The Ellis Motel Bar pop-up serves up beer, wine, and cocktails on the patio — the spicy margarita, the Bloody Mary, and espresso martini are winners. Neon Moon Coffee brews up specialty coffee and baked goods all day on the patio. Methodist Men BBQ is open from 11 am to 3 pm on the patio — but the meats go fast.
Little Cheese Shop
A cheese, wine, chocolate, and to-go gourmet shop in the heart of Round Top, Little Cheese Shop is housed in a quaint 1830s cottage. Grab fine cheeses and charcuterie fare (salami, prosciutto, pâté, mousse, smoked salmon), plus chocolate, sweet treats (we grabbed a few), spreads, chutneys, olives and pickles, crackers, and flat breads. Nothing pairs with cheese like wine; Little Cheese Shop offers a number of white, red, and sparkling bottles.
The Mark Speakeasy
Located inside Round Top’s 550 Market, The Mark is a secret speakeasy that is open Fridays and Saturdays from 8 pm to midnight for cocktails and light bar bites. A catering kitchen is available on-site for large parties and special events. Slip behind the secret door and see what it’s all about — and prepare foe a memorable night.
The Stone Cellar honky tonk

The Stone Cellar inhabits the refurbished La Grange train depot, which was built in 1861. The newly renovated honky tonk now features a cozy cocktail bar boasting local craft beers and wines, and cocktails aplenty. The venue is located less than a quarter of a mile from the Round Top Town Square and offers live music every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Don’t head back without visiting…
Round Top Festival Institute’s Festival Hill
The James Dick Foundation for the Performing Arts and its sole project, Round Top Festival Institute, were founded in 1971 by world-renowned concert pianist James Dick. Launched with just a handful of gifted young pianists in rented space on the town square, the project is now an internationally acclaimed music institute for aspiring young musicians and distinguished faculty. The foundation has developed superb year-round education and performance programs. Its must-visit, 210-acre campus Festival Hill boasts major performance facilities, historic houses, extensive gardens, parks, and nature preserves.
St. Martin’s Catholic Church
Known as the world’s smallest Catholic church, St. Martin’s celebrates mass on a monthly basis inside the 192-square-foot church, which holds six rows of pews that can accommodate 20 people.
Texas Cotton Gin Museum
Preserving the history of cotton and cotton ginning in Texas, the Texas Cotton Gin Museum is home to the 1914 Burton Farmers Gin — the oldest operating cotton gin in America. Recognized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the National Register of Historic Places, the museum transports guests to an era that defined the quintessential American — and most definitely, Texan — can-do spirit.
A note to first-timers: the entire experience can be daunting for Round Top newbies, and to add even more spice to the mix, each venue has varied dates. Make sure to check (and double-check) when your destination of choice will be open. With all that in mind, we’ve rounded up where to find the best fashion finds both vintage and new during the Round Top 2023 Fall Show.

A new year often sparks urges for a refresh — toward healthy habits, goal setting, clutter clearing and bringing in more positive energy. For home decor enthusiasts, that all translates to the home, and often means clearing out the old and bringing in the new. Unlike fashion, though, home decor trends tend to take their time easing into major seasonal shifts (it’s easier and cheaper to swap out your wardrobe than your decor — sustainable too!). Some home decor trends that are here to stay going into 2024? Sustainability and indoor-outdoor living, the former driven by millennials and Gen Z, according to a new design report by global surfacing company Cosentino.
They pulled designer and homeowner data to forecast top trends for 2024 and beyond, along with insights from some of the country’s top designers. We asked some of our favorite designers too what they think will be hot next year. Here are new trends to watch and incorporate into your home – plus, rental hacks to try if you’re not down with a whole renovation!
Spas are all about relaxation and self care, not rushing out in the morning to work. Big bathtubs, open showers, saunas, and spa-like amenities are all going to be a big trend in 2024. According to the report, designers and homeowners agreed that a spa-inspired bathroom was among their top 3 home priorities overall.

Rental hack: If you’re not ready to remodel or you rent, things like marble or stone accessories, plants, and if there’s room, a chair or settee will give your bath an elevated sanctuary feel. Adding a bath shelf is an easy and affordable way to create an ultimate spa bath too!
Bold Dramatic Moves

The neutral trend transitioned into more earthy tones in 2023 and will get even bolder come the new year. “I think 2024 is going to be all about bold, dramatic moves,” says Devon Wegman, founder and design director of Devon Grace Interiors in Chicago. “People are tired of playing it safe and sticking with neutrals, soft textures everywhere. Today, we’re incorporating more and more graphic stone, provocative artwork, area rugs and large statement chandeliers in spaces.”
Glam Metallics Are A Go

Metallics always add a bit of luxe glamour to a space and 2024 takes them up a notch, using them in areas like kitchens and baths. According to the design report, designers chose metallic accents as their top up-and-coming trend, while homeowners rated it number two.

The central headquarters of any home, the kitchen remains a focal point for design. Homeowners are looking to upgrade their kitchens for their own use (the best appliances and conveniences) but also for entertaining their guests with comfortable spaces to sit and have conversation.
Investment in the kitchen remains the number one priority for homeowners and designers in terms of budget too. More than 80 percent of designers are now bringing kitchens to the backyard as well, says the Cosentino report.

Look to make brown your next color accent. Pair your woods and leathers with a complimentary color to offset the mix of brown tones. Greenery always helps to infuse more color too!

Designers all agree that the rustic farmhouse aesthetic is out for 2024. “I think it’s time for the coastal California look to step aside. This came in hot after Modern Farmhouse faded away, and I think people are ready for more drama and uniqueness,” adds Wegman. Don’t second guess yourself in 2024 in all the ways, including decor — the bolder you are, the better!

Bring the outdoors in for a healthy, happy home in 2024. “Biophilic design will thrive in 2024,” says Ginger Curtis, CEO and founder of Urbanology Designs in Dallas. “This trend centers around bringing the outdoors inside, creating spaces that foster a stronger connection with nature. Expect to see more indoor plants, living green walls, natural materials like stone and wood, and large windows to maximize natural light and reduce the barrier between the interior and exterior.”
