Do you have something that drives you absolutely crazy, even though nobody else is fazed by it? We all do—whether it’s someone taking the last of the coffee without refilling, or seemingly arbitrary office policies. It’s strange when we get angry over nothing… but sometimes it’s also oddly liberating.
It seems like it’s something different that tips everybody over the edge—so let’s talk about some of the most common things that make us irrationally angry.
1. YouTube Video Recommendations
One user posted, “YouTube recommending videos that don’t start with the first one of a series. Why start on part 6…?”
“YT can’t count. You’ve watched episodes 1, 2, and 3 out of a series? What comes after episode 3? Episode 7, obviously. Next up is episode 21. Followed by episode 2 even though you’ve already watched it. It’s baffling how a simple episode list is beyond YT’s algorithm to understand,” one user replied.
Another user also commented, “Yeah, but 7 has higher engagement metrics than 4,5, or 6, so YT thinks that is more important than chronology.”
One responded, “For me it’s the 30s of unskippable ads, followed by another ad 25s into the video.”
2. Motion Sensor Doesn’t Work
One user posted, “When the motion sensor on a paper towel dispenser doesn’t work.”
Another user replied, “I hate it when you have to negotiate to get soap, water and towels but the germaphobe in me really likes not touching anything.”
One user commented, “As a fellow public toilet germaphobe, it shits me to tears when the amenities are designed to be no touch (sensor soap and paper towel etc) and then the door has a handle.”
Another user stated, “As long as they use real paper towels and not those shitty hand dryers, you can use the towel to grab the door handle. Some places now have the thing at the bottom of the door where you can use your foot. That is also pretty handy. It’s pretty gross though when you see some absolute slob come out of a stall and go right out the door using the handle you have to touch. I wouldn’t describe myself as a germaphobe by any stretch, but there is a level of basic hygiene that everyone should be at.”
3. People who Won’t Let you Merge
One Redditor posted, “When people speed up when I indicate a lane change.”
Another responded, “Omg thank god someone said this. Knew those jerks do that… on purpose lmao.”
One user also commented, “Me too, and I always wondered why they do that.”
Another Redditor added, “Some people are mean on purpose. Some people aren’t paying attention to their speed and when they notice they’re going slow cuz someone is trying to pass them, they correct.”
“I get [annoyed with] people who cut me off on the right, while my blinker to change lanes to the right is active and I’m intentionally trying to move over to the slow lane. They’re so eager to pass me that they won’t even let me get over to the slow lane or exit lane. I’m trying to move over, and it’s infuriating,” a user replied.
4. People who are Confidently Wrong
One user added to the thread, “Overconfident people who are clearly not very bright.”
Another responded, “People that [make up] an answer instead of admitting they don’t know something.”
Another one added, “I agree this is cringe but unfortunately as a medical student, doctors get pissed if I say ‘I don’t know’ to some of their random… questions, so I have to force myself to make up some [crap] instead.”
“My 11th grade English teacher was one of those teachers. He also got mad at you for making stuff up though and refused to use anything but your full legal name (first and last) but the second you tried to call him Mr instead of professor he’d yell at you and lecture the whole class about respect and if someone has a name/title preference you should accept that so [idk] what his problem was lmao.”
5. No Headlights in the Rain
One user commented, “Drivers who don’t turn their headlights on when it’s raining.”
Another user added, “Or ones that don’t use turn signals when turning.”
“They use it as they turn instead of before,” one Redditor replied.
Another user responded, “And it always seems to be gray or silver cars that completely blend in with the haze.”
6. Blocking the Grocery Aisle
One Redditor posted, “When people block the entire… aisle with their shopping carts.”
Another user responded, “Lmao my wife gets so pissed when people do this. She literally moves their cart for them.”
One user added, “I do that, too. I’ll pick up the end of their cart and just move it out of the way. Usually people are apologetic about it and I’m outwardly nice to them but I’m always thinking ‘If you’re so sorry why… did you do it in the first place??’”
One user shared, “My grocery store trigger is when someone stops in an aisle to peruse a section, and they leave their cart dead center in the aisle…preferably at an angle to ensure maximum blockage.”
7. People Stopping in Busy Stores
One user posted, “Pet peeve… people having friends and family gathering in the busiest intersection in the store right in front of the items everyone needs to get at with their kids running around, and getting in everyone’s way. Not slightly to the side by the frozen dinner entrees, or something, but in the worst imaginable spot impeding every other customer’s ability to get around, and get the stuff they need.”
One added, “I swear lockdown made everyone dumber. People can’t drive [at all] now and it seems to be the social norm to go slow as [heck] down isles and stop I the center of the isle.”
8. Setting Multiple Alarms
One user added, “My wife’s second and third alarms in the morning when I don’t have to get up for work.”
Another replied, “When you get into bed looking forward to a good night’s sleep, knowing you’ll be getting quite a lot of hours in bed before you have to get up for work the next day, and then what feels like just one blink later…”
One user then asked the OG commenter, “Do you have sleep apnea or insomnia? I’ve got relatives who have one or the other and it doesn’t seem fun. The one with sleep apnea got the CPAP machine and now he can function on 4 hours of sleep whereas before the machine, he would get 8 or so hours of sleep but still be extremely exhausted because his body wasn’t fully going to sleep. I get acid reflux, where if I eat too late I will wake up choking on stomach acid (or just throw up).”
The OG commenter answered, “I have narcolepsy, but you’re on the right lines yeah.”
9. When your Headphone Cord Snags
One Redditor posted, “Headphone cord snag.”
One user added, “On the kitchen drawer… WHILE I’M COOKING.”
One also shared the same sentiments and replied, “I’m so… angry just reading your comment.”
Another also added, “Similar rage level- you must carry some stuff, you’ve found a way to stack everything securely to carry in one trip. But it requires both hands. You manage to open a door with either your foot or by carefully stretching your fingers…. Then your belt loop/baggy top gets caught on the door handle when you’re almost fully through.”
10. Printers
One user commented, “Printers. If I plug you in, you should work. WHY YOU NO WORK?!”
“PC Load Letter? What the [heck] does that mean???” one user replied.
Another added, “Sounds like someone’s got a case of the Mondays…”
One user said, “Haha. The cry of the IT guy!!”

When you choose a bank for your daily checking and savings needs, you can choose between a national bank, a smaller regional bank, credit unions of varying sizes, and even online banks and financial technology companies.
Since early 2023, when Signature Bank and Silicon Valley Bank both experienced failures after customers pulled out large amounts of money during bank runs, banking customers may feel more comfortable choosing a national bank.
Although the U.S. government took extraordinary measures to protect the assets of SVB and Signature Bank customers, and deposits held in the accounts were FDIC insured, many customers were still rightfully concerned about gaining access to their money in a timely manner.
After the banking crisis of 2008, the Federal government declared banks like JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citibank, and Wells Fargo as “too big to fail.” But these aren’t the only national banks or credit unions available.
You might think that smaller online banks may have lower fees, while small local banks are known for friendly and responsive customer service. But the national banks on this list blend the best of all worlds: low fees, high marks for customer satisfaction, ways to avoid overdraft fees, convenient ATM networks, and a variety of banking products.
16 Best National Banks
Here are the 16 best national banks that offer exceptional services, excellent customer support, and innovative banking solutions to meet all of your financial needs.
1. SoFi – Best for Digital Banking & High Yields
SoFi became a nationally chartered online bank in 2022, after acquiring Golden Pacific Bancorp, Member FDIC. Originally known for its vast array of loan products, including private student loans, today SoFi has a combination checking and savings account, or a cash management account, with no monthly service fee.
SoFi also has no minimum balance requirements, no overdraft fee, and overdraft protection up to $50 with qualifying direct deposits each month. You can bank for free at any of 55,000+ fee free Allpoint ATMs nationwide.
As an online bank, SoFi offers higher interest rates than you may find at brick and mortar banks. Earn up to 4.20% APY on your savings account balance and 1.20% on money in your checking account. When you use your SoFi debit card at select local businesses, you can earn up to 15% cash back.
SoFi offers two tiers of accounts: SoFi and SoFi Plus. To qualify for the “freemium” SoFi Plus membership, bank customers must have qualifying direct deposits. Plus, when you sign up before December 31, 2023, you can earn a cash bonus of $250 when you set up direct deposits of $5,000 or $50 with a direct deposit as low as $1,000.
SoFi Plus members receive loan rate discounts, bonus rewards, access to special entertainment events and more, making SoFi a unique company when it comes to online banks.
2. Discover Bank – Best for Cash Back
Discover may be best known for cashback and rewards credit cards. But its online banking products are some of the best you’ll find among national banks.
With no monthly fees and no minimum balance, your Discover Cashback checking account pays 1% cashback on up to $3,000 worth of debit card purchases monthly. You’ll never pay overdraft charges, and you can withdraw cash at a network of 60,000+ fee free ATMs.
You can qualify for overdraft protection by linking your Discover Bank savings account. Discover Savings pays a high 3.90% APY with no minimum deposit required.
Other Discover Bank deposit accounts include CDs with terms from 3 months to 10 years, and a money market account that pays 3.80% APY for balances under $100,000 and 3.85% on balances $100,000 and up.
For questions or help with your account, you can reach a U.S.-based customer service representative for Discover Bank by phone, 24/7/365.
3. Chase Bank – Best for Credit Card Rewards & Referral Bonuses
As the world’s largest national bank, JPMorgan Chase Bank doesn’t need to do much to entice customers. People will choose Chase based on its name, reputation, and more than 4,700 convenient branch locations across the U.S.
However, Chase happens to have one of the best bonuses for new customers and a generous referral bonus program when existing customers refer their friends. This, coupled with a robust and easy-to-use mobile app and a variety of checking, savings and investment services, puts Chase on our list of top national banks in the U.S.
Chase is currently offering new Chase Total Checking customers a $200 bonus when they open a new account and set up direct deposit within the first 90 days.
New or upgrading Chase Private Client customers can earn a $3,000 bonus with a deposit of $500,000 or more within the first 45 days of account opening. Deposits of $150,000 to $249,999 earn $1,000 and cash deposits of $250,000 to $499,999 earn $2,000. You must keep the money in your J.P. Morgan Wealth Management or JPMorgan Chase deposit accounts for 90 days to qualify.
In addition to Chase Total Checking, the bank’s most popular checking account, and Private Client services, Chase also offers other checking and savings accounts.
Chase Secure Banking has a $4.95 monthly fee and no overdraft fees. Chase Premier Plus Checking offers a few added benefits beyond Chase Total Checking, including ATM fee rebates up to four times per statement cycle, a linked personal checking account with no monthly fees, and a 0.01% interest rate on balances.
Chase also offers bank accounts for kids, teens, and college students, as well as CDs, savings and money market accounts, mortgages, loan products, and a full array of top-rated rewards credit cards.
If you have multiple Chase accounts, it’s easy to manage them all within the mobile app.
4. Chime – Best for Building Credit
Chime is a financial technology company backed by Stride Bank, Member FDIC, and Bancorp Bank, Member FDIC. It is not a bank, itself, but offers some of the same features, including online banking, a debit card, and direct deposit up to two days earlier than some other banks.
Chime has no monthly service fee, no overdraft fee, and no minimum balance requirements. For customers who need a little boost to make it from paycheck to paycheck, Chime offers fee-free overdraft up to $200 through the SpotMe5 program and a credit builder secured Visa credit card with no annual fees, interest or minimum security deposit.
Use your Chime debit card at any of 60,000+ fee free1 ATMs in the Allpoint, MoneyPass or Visa Plus Alliance ATM networks. Out of network ATM fees may apply, otherwise.
You can qualify for Chime’s SpotMe program with a single direct deposit of $200 or more during any monthly statement period. If you process a transaction that would put you into overdraft, Chime will accept the transaction even if it puts your balance into the negative by up to $200.
The Credit Builder Secured Visa card carries the same requirements of a $200 monthly minimum direct deposit. You can build your credit and raise your credit score with responsible use of the card.

The appeal of U.S. Bank is in its high ratings for banking satisfaction across the board from customers. These factors all contribute to its ranking as a best national bank.

We rated Ally Bank as the best online only bank for savings, not just because of the high interest rate, but because it offers so many ways to manage your money and ramp up your savings efforts.
You can set up recurring transfers into your savings account for specific goals or just to build up your emergency coffers. You can choose to round up transactions made with your Ally Bank debit card, or even electronic payments and checks. Finally, Ally Bank analyzes your checking account periodically to reveal extra funds that are “safe to save.” Ally Bank automatically transfers that money for you. But you can transfer it back whenever you’d like.

You can also apply for CoverDraft℠ Coverage, which will cover up to $250 in charges that would put your account in the negative. Methodology: How We Chose the Best National Banks
We evaluated a variety of banks and credit cards, taking into consideration the:
Variety of products
Interest rates
Monthly fees
ATM fees and ATM fee reimbursement
Branch locations and number of branches
Minimum deposit requirements
Fraud protection and security
We also looked at consumer reviews, and drew on the general reputation of each bank to find the best national bank.
Finding the Best National Bank
Now that we’ve explored the specifics of the best online banks and brick and mortar banks nationwide, you probably still have questions about which one is really the best national bank.
Let’s compare the three largest in the U.S. based on number of branches, interest rates, and overall banking satisfaction.
Chase vs. Wells Fargo
For the largest nationwide bank, Chase offers excellent banking satisfaction with an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, 4,800 branch locations, and an easy and intuitive mobile app. If you are shopping for a bank credit card, Chase also offers some of the best rewards cards available today.
Wells Fargo rivals Chase when it comes to number of branches, with roughly 4,700 locations across the U.S. It’s somewhat easier to waive the checking account fees at Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo offers higher interest rates for savings, with a 0.15% APY compared to Chase’s 0.01%.
Both banks have lower interest rates than you might find at online banks. However, if you are looking for national banks with a solid reputation, many branches, and high marks in banking satisfaction, either Chase or Wells Fargo would be a good choice.
Wells Fargo vs. Bank of America
Bank of America and Wells Fargo are the second and third-largest banks in the U.S. based on assets. BofA only has 4,000 branches compared to Fargo’s 4,700, but BofA boasts more ATMs nationwide.
BofA stands out when you join the Preferred Rewards program because you can waive the fees on your bank account and enjoy perks, bonus rewards on BofA credit cards, and rate discounts on loans.
If you have a large balance or are looking for an investing platform through your bank, BofA may be your best choice. On the other hand, Wells Fargo offers high interest rates on savings and convenient branch locations nationwide.
Common Questions
People have many questions related to whether an online bank is better than a traditional bank or whether a local bank is better than one of the largest national banks. We break it all down here.
Which is better, an online bank or a brick-and-mortar bank?
If you are looking for the highest interest rates and generous rewards programs, you are highly likely to find them at online banks. However, there are some advantages to a brick and mortar bank, including in-person service at local branches, the availability of paper checks, and easy ways to deposit cash in person or at branch ATMs.
You should expect the best national online banks and the best brick and mortar banks to have robust mobile apps, easy-to-waive fees, and fraud protection.
Make sure whatever bank you choose is “Member FDIC,” which means your deposits are insured up to $250,000 per account holder, per account type. That means joint accounts have $500,000 worth of FDIC insurance protection.
Is my money safer in a national bank vs. a regional bank (or a national credit union vs. a regional credit union)?
All banks on this list are Member FDIC, which means they are insured to the maximum allowable limit of $250,000 per account holder, per account type. Credit unions are covered up to the same limits by the National Credit Union Administration.
Many online banks are insured up to $2 million or more. These financial institutions divide cash deposits among multiple partner banks. Each bank insures deposits up to the maximum limit allowed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Read the fine print to determine your coverage limits when you choose a bank.
Beyond that, your money should be equally safe in a national bank, a smaller bank, or a credit union of any size. Also look for features such as fraud protection, fraud alerts via text, email or in the mobile app, and enhanced website security measures. You should also be able to lock and unlock your debit card in the mobile app if you misplace it or believe it may have been stolen.
What makes big banks different from smaller banks?
By definition, big banks will have larger market capitalization, which represents the total value of a bank’s stocks. Big banks will also hold more assets. For instance, Chase, which is the world’s largest financial institution, holds $3.2 trillion in assets. The second-largest national bank, Bank of America, possesses $2.41 trillion in assets. Larger financial institutions may also have more bank branches.
In many other ways, big national banks and smaller banks are similar, especially today. Customers want specific features and are unwilling to compromise on things like fee-free ATMs, no monthly fees, early direct deposit, and an intuitive mobile app.
How much interest do the best big banks pay?
In general, some of the largest national banks do not have the highest interest rates for savings and very few offer interest earning checking accounts.
Capital One 360 and Discover are two of the best national banks that offer interest on checking. To earn a higher APY with one of the largest national banks, you might want to consider CDs.
Are national banks better than other kinds of banks?
National banks aren’t necessarily better or worse than other kinds of banks. They may have more convenient branch locations, a higher number of branches, and a greater variety of products, but they might also have higher fees. Decide what’s most important to you when you choose a bank.
If you’d prefer to trust your money with one of the largest national banks, with a large market capitalization, high value, and branches nationwide, consider opening your checking and savings accounts with one of the best national banks on this list.

To hear the storage industry tell it, every kitchen needs plastic containers in a dozen sizes. You need specialized storage, too: triangles for wedges of pie, say, or deviled-egg sarcophagi with little divots to cradle each demi-oeuf. Oh, and lots of foil, waxed paper, and plastic wrap and bags to hold sandwiches and snacks or cover bowls of leftovers.
My boxes of foil and plastic wrap last me up to a couple of years each. And while I’ll cop to owning a few Tupperware and Rubbermaid pieces, it’s all hand-me-down stuff — and note that I said a few. I don’t need much, and I don’t use much commercial wrapping, because there are plenty of other ways to store food.
Note: Before I share these frugal hacks, I need to address the issue of plastic. Some people are very nervous about chemicals leaching into their foods. If this is you, then ignore all mention of plastics below and focus on the other ideas.
Use What You’ve Got
Don’t automatically assume you need special food-storage containers. Why not just put leftovers in a bowl with a saucer or bread-and-butter plate on top? If it fits snugly, it’s no different than aluminum foil or a plastic lid. (What? You thought that “burping” a Tupperware container got all the air out?)
Glass food-storage dishes are all the rage now, but glass jars work just as well. The next time you finish up some jam, pickles or spaghetti sauce, save the jar. (Quart canning jars are good for food storage, too, if you can get them cheaply. More on that below.)
The upside: They’re free. The downside: They don’t hold as much as those big Tupperware bowls — and they don’t stack like them, either, so they take up quite a bit of room in the cupboard. I keep only a couple of them around and recycle the rest.
When cream cheese goes on sale, I stock up on the soft variety. Not only is it easier to spread, it comes in a sturdy and reusable container. I use these for small amounts of leftovers, or fill them with individual servings of pudding. (I’m also using one for odd nails, screws and other bits of miscellaneous hardware.)
Empty margarine tubs work much the same way. They tend to be larger, but that’s fine — you can put small leftovers in a large container, but you can’t put large leftovers in a small container.
Bonus: If you’re sending food home with dinner guests, you don’t worry about getting the Gold’n Soft container back. Nobody’s walking out the door with my Tupperware, though, because it belonged to my mother.
I buy Wyler’s sugar-free lemonade, which comes in little packets inside a plastic container. These containers have proved useful for stacking Christmas cookies as gifts. When I’m making jam and have a small amount left over, I’ll put it in a Wyler’s container and give it to my sister or a neighbor.
It’s in the Bag
I broke my toe last spring. When I looked for a plastic bag to use as an ice pack, I was amused by the variety of choices. I had bags that once held hot dog rolls, bread, and frozen soybeans, corn and mixed vegetables. I had the inner liners from boxes of cereal and crackers. I even had a number of Ritz cracker sleeves.
Here are a few ways I’ve used these items:
Plastic bags. I use these to store leftover meatloaf, chicken or pork chops and to keep home-baked goods fresh (I don’t have a cookie jar). Sometimes I slip a bowl of leftovers inside one of these bags.
Ritz cracker wrappers. Cut up, they’re good for wrapping and freezing the hamburger patties I make when ground beef goes on sale. I secure them with rubber bands — since I still subscribe to a newspaper, I have tons of those things. A cracker wrapper is rubber-banded over the glass measuring cup of bacon fat sitting in my fridge. And I’m writing this from a house-sitting job; I used a Ritz cracker wrapper around the toothbrush in my toiletries bag.
Frozen vegetable bags. I use them to freeze chili — or spaghetti-sauce-sized portions of cooked ground beef or chicken. Or I cut off the ends and cut the bag in half lengthwise; each half is the right size for wrapping those hamburger patties. (Originally I offered these to my sister, who owns a Golden Retriever. She declined because she prefers a bag she can tie shut and also because big dog = big poop. Bigger than 16 ounces? Yikes! Another reason I don’t have a dog.)
Cracker/cereal liners. These are good for storing chicken or chops bought in bulk and then re-wrapped into smaller portions. If you cut the liners open, you wind up with what’s essentially a big piece of waxed paper. It can be cut into smaller pieces to wrap hamburger, whether cooked or in patties. Each summer I cut one of the large cracker liners to fit the cookie sheet on which I freeze gleaned blackberries. I freeze them until they’re solid before putting them in bags, to keep them from becoming one big lump.
And then there are the washed and re-used Ziploc bags. You just knew I’d bring that up, didn’t you? An MSN Money reader suggested buying only the freezer bags, which seem to be made of sterner stuff and will last longer. I can attest: Some of my zipper-type bags are on their fourth tour of duty for frozen blackberries.
However, if a bag has held raw meat then I tend to throw it out. Campylobacter and other nasties are nothing to fool with; to me, it’s worth occasionally tossing a bag vs. risking food poisoning.
Possible Frugal Hacks
Why pay retail? Here are some other ways to save on food storage:
You can often find Tupperware and other storage containers in the “free” box at yard sales. Empty jars, too.
I bought aluminum foil at an estate sale. Or, rather, I tried to buy it: The woman running the sale just gave it to me. If I’d paid, it would have been a quarter and it was one of those big boxes, too.
Once I found waxed paper in the half-price bin at the dollar store. If you are very lucky there will be a clearance bin at your dollar store, too.
Keep an eye on the Freecycle network — I’ve seen Rubbermaid, Tupperware and canning jars offered. Don’t see any? Put up a “wanted” ad.
You can paint these tactics as extremely green/frugal, or you can use them as an easy opportunity to make fun of extremely green/frugal types. Personally, I prefer to look at it as giving “throwaway” plastic at least one more use — and, yes, I’m saving money because I don’t have to pull a length of foil or plastic wrap off the roll. Have you checked the price of commercial wraps lately?
J.D.’s note: Donna’s right: It’s easy to make fun of frugal tactics like this. But remember how last May I spent ten days on a boat with my real millionaire next door? Well, he does all of these things and more. And the photo illustrating this article? That’s our own kitchen drawer — Kris has a vast library of re-used plastic bags and containers.
The chilly season is upon us. If you live in North America, you’ve probably had at least a few cold nights by now. Up in my neck of the woods — in the Boston area — we’ve had our central heat running for a few weeks. Which means we’re in full swing winterizing, with an eye to keeping the heating bills low.
Over the past few years, we’ve actually gotten pretty good at this. In New England, winter heat can eat up a big part of a family’s budget. Our heating bills used to run over $500 a month; last year, we had them down to $250 or less. This year, I’m hoping to go even lower.
No, we don’t live in a refrigerator. Our house is pretty comfortable all year round. Here’s how we keep the bills low.
Invest in Insulation and Efficiency
Small changes can have ripple effects, but big changes are worth even more. Last year, we had our walls insulated with blown cellulose insulation. We also replaced our 40-year-old oil burner with a high-efficiency natural gas system.
These home improvements aren’t cheap. Since they’re good for the environment as well as your budget, though, there are often government grants and loans available to help make them more affordable. We didn’t have the savings to do this, so we took out a 0% loan through our state’s energy-efficiency program. The loan payments are far less than the immediate savings on our heating bills. The upgrade is paying for itself already, and will continue to do so long after we’ve paid off this loan.
Of course, I used the savings from lower heating bills to accelerate paying off my higher-interest debt. I wouldn’t normally suggest taking out a loan as a step towards financial health, but in this case it clearly saved us money. It also helped shrink our whole household’s environmental footprint.
In addition to your heating system and your home insulation, you may want to think about upgrading your windows.
To find out what big-ticket investments will pay off, you can schedule a free energy audit through your utility company. They’ll send someone to your home who will walk through the house and give you a full report on ways to save energy and money. When we had ours done, the nice young man also replaced all our lightbulbs with compact fluorescents — free of charge.
Bundle Up
There’s no need to keep your house balmy enough for T-shirts all year. Make sure you and your family have good, comfortable warm clothing and don’t be afraid to use it.
When I was 21, I had a roommate who would turn the thermostat way down and walk around our chilly house wearing a winter hat and clutching a hot mug of tea. At the time, I mocked her with my friends as we lounged around their toasty living rooms. Now I’ve become that roommate. I’m always turning the thermostat down and telling the kids to put on a sweater.
I don’t want anyone here to feel cold — I hate being cold myself — but I’ve learned that wearing warm clothes is a cheap and easy way to stay cozy. Best of all, you can create your own personal heating zone. Don’t like it so warm? Take off a layer. There’s no fighting with your spouse about how warm to keep the living room.
Not that we keep it frigid. I set our thermostat in the mid-60s during the day, and turn it down at night when we’re all tucked into warm beds anyway.
If you don’t already have one, get a programmable thermostat. They make it easy to adjust the heat for different times of day automatically. You don’t have to worry about remembering to do it — it just happens.
Bundle the House Up, Too
Don’t just bundle yourself up. Adding layers to your house will make it feel warmer even if the thermostat stays at a modest temperature. I have a nice collection of Oriental rugs that I lay down this time of year, which keeps the hardwood floors warmer on little bare feet. This is essential because small kids lose their socks at an amazing rate, but it’s great just for giving the whole room a warmer feel, too.
I also put up window plastics and insulated curtains to cut down on drafts from the windows. If you haven’t done it already, spending a few hours going around your windows and doors with some draft-sealing putty or caulk will make a huge difference to how comfortable your home is in the winter.
Use Heating Zones
Chances are, you’re not using every part of your house all day long. If you live in a modern house, you probably already have several “heating zones” so you can program your thermostats to different temps in different areas.
If you live in an older house like mine, you probably have just one thermostat that controls the whole system. That means that if it’s 64 degrees in my living room, the heat kicks on. If it’s 65, the heat shuts off because it’s warm enough. Doesn’t matter what the temperature is in the rest of the house. There’s no way for the heating system to know that.
To solve this problem, I’ve created a bunch of “heat zones” in my house. By keeping the bedroom doors closed upstairs and hanging drapes in the hallway doors downstairs, I cut our drafty hallway and staircase out of the heating system entirely. Now the radiators in each room only have to heat those rooms, not those rooms plus several hundred square feet of largely unused hallway space.
I was shocked at the difference this made to how warm the house felt. Hanging the drapes to keep the heat in the rooms and out of the hallway is new this year: I just did it a few weeks ago. I won’t know for months yet whether it pays off in reduced heating bills or not. But the comfort factor was immediate and obvious.
The other heating zone change I made was to my workspace. I’m the only person home most of the day, and I spend most of the day in my office. Rather than keep the whole house toasty, I’ve lowered the temp on the main thermostat and set up a space heater in my office. This way, I can be as warm as I like without wasting a lot of energy warming up empty rooms.
What do you do to keep your heating bills low in the winter?

Need More Inexpensive Christmas Gift ideas?
Know someone else that needs this, too? Then, please share!!
I am sick. For the past ten days, I’ve been wrestling with a high fever, a cough, a persistent sore throat, and a general malaise that’s kicking my ass. Basically, I’m the sickest I’ve been in over a decade. (The last time I was this sick? The evening that The Fellowship of the Ring premiered. I went to see it with friends, but don’t remember a thing about that night because I was sick with a high fever. High fevers suck!)
Normally, I don’t go to the doctor. My family has a funny thing about doctors, and usually prefer to let an illness run its course rather than to pay a doctor to tell us to “let the illness run its course”. Last Tuesday, though, I decided that sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. After four days with a high fever, and after sensing that something wasn’t quite right with my lungs, I drove myself to urgent care.
“You have the flu,” the nurse practitioner told me. “And it’d be even worse if you hadn’t had your flu shot. As it is, you may have pneumonia. It’s been going around.”
She prescribed an inhaler, steroids, and an antibiotic, but she seemed skeptical that they’d help. “Make sure you call us if things don’t improve,” she said. “In the meantime, you need to spend 72 hours in quarantine. You don’t want to give this to anyone else, and you don’t want to catch anything else that might be going around.”
So, for three days last week, I confined myself to my apartment.
Hunting for Health Insurance
But this article isn’t about how sick I’ve been. This article is about my quest for health insurance. Earlier this year, I promised to share my experience as I looked for an individual policy.
As background, I’ve always had insurance through Kris. Because we were married, my insurance was covered by the policy she had through her employer. And before that — long before that — I was on my parents’ health insurance. For 43 years, health insurance has been a non-issue for me.
That changed, though, when I asked for a divorce last autumn. I knew that I’d have to find my own coverage. In fact, Kris wouldn’t allow the papers to be filed until I could demonstrate I had replacement coverage.
“No problem,” I thought. “How hard can it be to find health insurance? I’m the healthiest I’ve been in my life!” Haha. Turns out, it’s not as easy as it sounds.
A Wild Goose Chase
My first stop was eHealthInsurance.com. Many people (including several GRS readers) had recommended this site as a great way to compare health insurance and to apply online without much hassle. It sounded perfect. Before Kris and I left for our trip to South America in February, I filled out an application. It seemed simple, and I had no doubt I’d be approved.
I wasn’t.
Some of my options at eHealthInsurance
While we were in Argentina, I got an e-mail that said my application for health insurance had been rejected, but didn’t offer any explanation. When I got home, there was a letter waiting for me in the mail that gave more detail. Turns out, I had a pre-existing condition that caused my application to be rejected. Five years ago, when I was fifty pounds heavier, I suffered from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a risk factor for other diseases, and insurers don’t like it. Never mind that I no longer have sleep apnea, that I’m fifty pounds lighter than when I had it, and that my health has never been better. There’s no way to convey that info on an application. Instead, I was turned down for health insurance.
Fine.
I went back to eHealthInsurance.com to apply for a different policy, but there’s a question on every application: “Has any other carrier turned you down for health insurance during the past 90 days?” It turns out that once one carrier turns you down, all carriers will turn you down. (This isn’t strictly true, but it’s mostly true.)
Fine.
I decided that my best bet was to just just continue receiving coverage through my same carrier. My logic was impeccable: I’d been with them for years already and they knew my medical history, so surely it would be a piece of cake to carry things forward. Again, this didn’t turn out to be true.
I called my carrier to ask about porting my policy from Kris’ work account to individual insurance. “We can’t do that,” they told me. “You have to call the employer that has the policy.” So I did. But Kris’ employer told me they couldn’t port it forward either. “Your only option is COBRA,” they told me. (COBRA is ongoing medical insurance available when your existing policy ends. It’s expensive.)
I’m telling this story in a calm, even-handed fashion, but I wasn’t feeling calm and even-handed during the process. I was feeling frustrated. I couldn’t figure out where to turn.
Finally, I started talking about my health insurance dilemma with everyone I met. I asked my self-employed friends what they do for health insurance. (Shocking but true answer: Most of them don’t have health insurance. No joke.) When I met other folks who’ve been through a divorce, I asked how they handled the health insurance question.
In the end, it was my colleague Mark Silver from Heart of Business who provided the answer. “I used an insurance broker to find health insurance,” he told me. “Here. I’ll give you his contact info.”
Taking Matters Into My Own Hands
Because I hate e-mail conversations and because I hate getting the run-around by phone, I tend to prefer face-to-face business transactions. Yes, they take more time, but I find them easier. It’s possible to discuss shades of grey and to explore multiple possibilities in person. For this reason, I drove across Portland to visit Ron Tate at Tate Insurance Services. I explained my situation.
“I need health insurance,” I said. “But I only want catastrophic insurance. I’m willing to self-insure almost everything.” Because I have substantial savings, I’m willing to pay more for routine coverage if that means my monthly insurance premiums are low. In the long-term, this should save me tons of money.
“No problem,” Mr. Tate told me. “We have several options.” He walked me through them. I chose the option that seemed to offer the best balance of cost and coverage, filled out the application. And waited. And waited. And waited.
After a week of waiting, I got word that my application had been rejected. Again. And again because of sleep apnea. “We have a couple of options,” Mr. Tate told me. “Because you’ve been rejected, you qualify for the Oregon Medical Insurance Pool, which is for high-risk customers like you. It’s nto cheap though. Or you can apply elsewhere. Or we can ask for an exclusion for the sleep apnea. That means you won’t have coverage for that condition, but everything else will be normal.”
“To be honest,” I said, “I just want to get this finished. I feel like I’ve been working on this for weeks, and I’m tired of it. It shouldn’t be this hard to get health insurance.”
My plan options at my insurance provider
In fact, I was so frustrated that I went home from Mr. Tate’s office and took matters into my own hands. I did what I should have done from the start. I went to the website for my current carrier and filled out an application for personal health insurance. I chose the cheapest policy (which still costs $128 a month!) and indicated I was a current customer. And then I waited. Within a couple of days, I’d heard back that my application was approved.
An Unhealthy System
That’s a long, boring story, I know, but I’m certain it’s typical of what everyone goes through when attempting to find health insurance on their own. It’s not easy. In fact, it seems a little crazy that it takes that much work to get coverage.
During the process, I spoke with dozens of people about their own experience getting insurance, or about their experience with family members who’ve had to use health insurance lately. I’ll be honest: I came away jaded. I’m far from being a socialist, but there’s no question in my mind that the current health insurance system in the U.S. is broken. It’s tough to find coverage, that coverage is expensive, and once you have it, it’s like a game for the insurance companies to get out of paying. This is dumb. I’d be happy to try some sort of socialized medicine as an alternative, and so would every single person I spoke to during this process. (But, of course, I live in Portland where even moderates like me would be considered liberal in other parts of the country.)
And, of course, the conclusion of this story is that I had to put my insurance to use last week. I have no idea how much my doctor’s appointment, x-ray, and prescriptions would have cost without insurance (and neither do the doctors, actually), but I do know that my total out-of-pocket cost was $29.26. (This may go up after the insurance company decides whether I owe more, but that’s the current total.)
I’m still not healthy. There’s still gunk in my lungs. I’m still running a mild fever. I still feel like sleeping all day. But it’s good to know that if I do need medical help, I have the insurance situation sorted out.

While there is a myriad of opportunities for retirees to work from home, what follows are some of best, who might be a good fit for the work and estimated pay, per salary.com as of May 1, 2023.
Bookkeeper —
Bookkeepers maintain a business’s financial records, including purchases, sales, invoices, payments and other transactions. The job will require a high level of accuracy. And it will likely take some technological savvy given that many, if not most, businesses use software to manage their finances.
Best for:
Organized and detail-oriented workers with a solid grasp of basic accounting principles.
Average salary: $42,854
Telehealth Nurse —
If you have a nursing degree but hope to transition to remote work, the growing demand for telemedicine may be a great opportunity for you.
Telehealth nurses “see” patients via email, phone and chat. They also videoconference and answer their questions, determine the next medical steps, conduct follow-up appointments and deliver medical treatments.
Best for:
This is good for people who already hold a nursing degree, of course. And in a remote environment, communication skills become more important than ever for treating patients with sensitivity.
Average salary: $85,045
Administrative Assistant —
You may think of an administrative assistant as someone who mans the reception desk, makes copies and orders more coffee. But the remote role has slightly different responsibilities. You can expect to answer phone calls and emails, schedule meetings and appointments and handle many of the things that keep a remote office running smoothly.
Best for:
This is good for people with excellent customer service and time management skills. Being able to multitask is a plus.
Average salary: $45,003
Paralegal —
Paralegals serve as assistants to lawyers, helping investigate and research legal cases, maintaining records, drafting correspondence and putting together documents for trials. The job descriptions for a paralegal will vary widely depending on the law firm, what type of law is practiced, its size and the paralegal’s own qualification level.
Best for:
Those who already have a certification or degree in paralegal studies—though the qualifications required to become a paralegal depend on the hiring firm and an actual degree or certification isn’t always necessary.
On the other hand, if this interests you, paralegal certification programs and associate’s degrees in paralegal studies can be relatively affordable and can require as few as 12-24 months of study.
Average salary: $58,630-117,990 (salary ranges widely vary)
Tutor
Tutoring is another job with a wide variety of possibilities, depending on the age and education level of the students, the subject or subjects taught and more. You can be a generalist who works with elementary school kids on any subject they need help with.
You can also be a specialist who works with college students on writing assignments, an ESL tutor who helps adults learn English, and all kinds of varieties in between. In the big picture, a tutor works with students outside of their classes to help them better understand and implement the concepts they’re learning.
Best for:
People who are patient, good at breaking complex concepts into simple ideas and steps and hold the required credentials. Some tutor positions only require a GED, while others may require a college degree in the subject you intend to specialize in, such as a bachelor’s degree in math for a math tutor.
Average salary: $42,422
Receptionist
A virtual receptionist serves the same role as a traditional, in-person receptionist: They ensure that all customer concerns are taken care of.
While there is some overlap with a virtual administrative assistant, a receptionist will be more focused on the customer side of the office than the administrative, answering phone calls and emails, helping customers who need assistance, scheduling appointments and more.
Best for:
This is good for those with good multitasking and people skills. And some technological savvy ensures that customers don’t slip through the cracks in a remote office.
Average salary: $41,704
Customer Service Representative
In a brick-and-mortar retail shop such as a hardware store, a customer service rep may be walking the floor, answering questions about what someone should buy for their upcoming home improvement project.
In a remote business, customer service representatives serve much the same purpose: answering customer questions, helping them with problems and troubleshooting any issues.
Best for:
People with patience, great communication skills and a solid knowledge base of the products or services being sold by their employer.
Average salary: $37,623
Transcriptionist
The transcriptionist job is a straightforward one: You simply type up recordings. Some transcriptionists work exclusively in one industry. For example, they can work in legal or medical industries, which necessitates a certain level of knowledge of the terminology used in that profession. Others may do general transcription work, typing up whatever is needed.
Best for:
This is good for fast and accurate typists looking for low-intensity work. While some may find this kind of work boring, the right person may find the audio or video they transcribe interesting and value the calm.
Average salary: $41,453
Things to Consider When Looking for Remote Jobs
Don’t Get Scammed
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a common scam is for a fake company to hire you. And then they send you a check to buy equipment with the caveat that you should send the extra money back. The check is bad and will be returned.
The FTC advises that you carefully review any job offers, only apply to jobs on legitimate websites and never rely on a “cleared” check your employer sends you.
Use Your Career Expertise
One of the best ways to find a new remote job is to use the skills you already have. You may be able to find a less demanding and remote version of your previous career. And going into this new job with your years of experience can be valuable to your employer. And it can potentially earn you a bigger starting salary.
For instance, if you had a career as an editor, you may be an excellent English tutor. You can help students understand the rules of grammar and how to improve their reading and writing skills.
Understand How Working Can Impact Your Social Security Benefits
Working can still be the right choice for you, but make you know how your benefits could be affected. According to the Social Security Administration, while you can work and still receive benefits, there’s a limit to how much you can earn before they begin to reduce your benefits if you’re not yet full retirement age.
In 2023, the limit is $21,240 for those under full retirement age. And it’s $56,520 for the year that you reach full retirement age.
Bottom Line
It’s common for retirees to continue working in retirement. It could be due to financial reasons or just finding ways to keep busy. However, you may not want to stay with the same career track you worked in previously. You may be looking for something less demanding, more flexible or a job you can do from home. But before you decide to work, do your due diligence in finding the right opportunities.

Reports released this week by several respected market observers point to less good and increased bad and ugly ahead for the housing market.
For some of the good, a U.S. Census Bureau report released late last week spurred a bout of optimism when it revealed that new-home sales jumped by nearly 11% month-over-month in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, after declining by 12% in April.
Moody’s Investors Service, in a housing-market report released this week, puts some ugly back into the home-sales figures for May, however.
“At 696,000 units, May new home sales were around 17% below the recent peak of 839,000 units in December last year,” the Moody’s report notes. “[On June 21], the National Association of Realtors said that existing-home sales declined for the fourth consecutive month.
“Existing-home sales fell in May by 3.4% on a seasonally adjusted basis to 5.41 million, the lowest since June of 2020 and similar to pre-pandemic levels.”
Those figures, along with “sharp recent increases in mortgage rates” and other supporting data, lead Moody’s to conclude that the “U.S. home-price boom is over.” The firm, which rates securitization offerings and provides other capital-market services, predicts “material declines” in both new- and existing-home transactions this year, compared with 2021.
Supporting the ugly outlook for the housing market is the release today, June 29, of the quarterly CFO Survey, conducted jointly by Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and the Federal Reserve Banks of Richmond and Atlanta. The survey of more than 300 U.S. financial executives conducted between May 25 and June 10, shows optimism about the broader U.S. economy continuing to decline.
The average index score for the current survey was 50.7, compared with 54.8 in the prior quarter and 60.3 two quarters ago.
“Price pressures have increased, real revenue growth has stalled and optimism about the overall economy has fallen sharply,” said John Graham, a Fuqua finance professor and the survey’s academic director. “Monetary tightening [by the Federal Reserve] is one of several factors dampening the economic outlook.”
The CFO Survey’s findings are echoed by a revised first-quarter 2022 gross domestic product (GDP) estimate released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). It shows that a drastic economic slowdown is already underway.
“Real gross domestic product [a measure of all goods and services produced in the economy] decreased at an annual rate of 1.6 percent in the first quarter of 2022 …,” the BEA report states. “In the fourth quarter of 2021, real GDP increased 6.9 percent.”
The BEA’s first-quarter GDP estimate, it’s third to date, was revised downward from -1.4% and -1.5% in the two prior estimates. The grim data led Mortgage Capital Trading (MCT), a San Diego-based capital market software and services firm, to broach the “R“ word in its daily market-overview report.
“Concern over a slowing economy and aggressive interest rate hikes from the Fed are beginning to dominate market sentiment,” the MCT report states. “This morning’s GDP release [on June 29] came with a downward revision for the last reading, further supporting views that a recession is either in progress or coming soon.”
What does all this mean for the housing market in the months ahead? The Moody’s report attempts to frame some of the expectations.
“We expect some increases in existing-house prices over the next 18 months, though for appreciation to be well below the general rate of inflation,” the Moody’s report states. “After that, we expect home appreciation to settle in at levels somewhat lower than the rate of overall U.S. inflation.”
The report even indicates that there “is risk that existing home prices will have a minor correction over the next two years, similar to housing markets in many other developed counties facing risks after recent booms.”
The “moderation” in the U.S. housing market is ongoing and the full effects of recent rate increases have yet to be fully realized, the Moody’s report adds, especially with respect to housing prices.
Moody’s predicts that housing demand will “dampen significantly” in the months ahead due to the doubling of rates for 30-year fixed mortgages since the start of the year, which is fueling a huge jump in monthly mortgage costs. Freddie Mac’s most recent Primary Mortgage Market Survey shows the average 30-year fixed rate mortgage at 5.81% as of June 23.
“The monthly costs of new mortgages on existing homes sold at median transaction prices [are] more than 60% higher than a year ago,” the Moody’s report states. “Although higher mortgage rates do not always drive home prices lower, they typically affect sales activity and drive down the rate of price appreciation.
“We also expect higher rates to restrict for-sale supply because current homeowners will be reluctant to lose low-rate fixed borrowing costs.”
So, in effect, moderating or even declining home prices could be neutralized by rising borrowing costs, leading the housing market toward stagnation — the doldrums — in the worst-case scenario.
There is some good news mixed in with all this bad and ugly, however. Moody’s points out that some “fundamental housing strengths” will likely help to mitigate the degree of any market correction, at least over the next 12 to 18 months.
Those strengths include “favorable demographic trends, solid underwriting of outstanding mortgages and lingering housing supply constraints from a period of underbuilding,” according to the Moody’s report. Also on the bright side, according to Moody’s, is that a moderate decline in housing prices could be good for the market longer-term. That’s assuming the Federal Reserve wins the fight to tame inflation, now running at 8.6%, without causing a major spike in unemployment, which was at 3.6% in May for the third month in a row, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In short, the housing market has reached a fork in the road, based on the Moody’s analysis — with one path leading to the doldrums, or even decline, and the other toward resurgence and a new normal.
“If U.S. home prices were to decline modestly, it would increase affordability for potential homebuyers and improve demand, including for individuals who were priced out of the market in the recent months because of rapidly rising interest rates,” Moody’s reasons in its report. “However, sustained large increases in mortgage rates or a material weakening in the labor market could lead to sharper declines in housing activity and prices.”

What’s Ahead:
What is Dave app?
Three friends were dissatisfied with certain aspects of traditional banking, especially overdraft fees, due to difficulty monitoring monthly expenses and their remaining bank balance.
Backed by celebrity investor Mark Cuban, they developed the Dave cash app as a “David vs. Goliath” solution for the majority of Americans to avoid overdraft fees and exorbitant payday loans.
With Americans paying as much as $12.4 billion in overdraft fees in 2020, such an innovation addressed a real consumer pain point.
Dave app is an entirely mobile platform available for iPhones running iOS (download from Apple App Store) and Android phones (download from Google Play Store). It isn’t available on computers.

How the Dave app works
The Dave app is a fully mobile interface for banking products provided by the financial institution Evolve Bank & Trust, partnering with Dave Inc.
It has two main products: a spending account and Extra Cash. The spending account functions as a checking account and you can get your direct deposit up to two days early if you choose to have your direct deposit sent there.
ExtraCash allows you to get an advance of up to $500 that is paid back automatically on your next payday. For a small fee, you can spend it out of your spending account with your Dave debit card or transfer it to another checking account for free.

The Dave account: Setting up a bank account
Download the Dave App and link your bank account to determine whether you qualify for an ExtraCash advance.
Dave spending account
This account is Dave’s primary product. Calling it a spending account emphasizes that it is similar to a checking account, without checking. Evolve charges no overdraft fee or low-balance fees.
You can use this account alone or with a linked bank account. The linked account may be a checking account or another type of bank account, such as a savings account.
The Dave Debit Card, backed by Mastercard®, is linked with this account, and you can make debit card purchases with it like with any other debit card and withdraw from MoneyPass® ATMs.
You can use your Dave Debit Card in Canada, Mexico, and the UK to pay or withdraw cash from ATMs; foreign transaction fees apply for both uses as specified in the deposit account agreement.
The app provides you with a Virtual Dave Debit Card on your phone.
The Dave Rewards program, linked to the Dave Debit Card, offers cashback opportunities for spending ExtraCash advances via this card.

Set up an ExtraCash account
Within the Dave app, will answer some verification questions and then you can set up an ExtraCash Account.
Qualification requirements for an ExtraCash advance
Dave uses a proprietary underwriting model to analyze your bank account for markers of financial health so as not to plunge you into a worse financial position.
This model determines your monthly income, account balance, and typical spending habits and uses this information to decide whether or not you qualify for a advance and how much. It does not do a credit check with the credit bureaus.
Your bank account must be at least 60 days old, have a minimum of three recurring deposits, and monthly deposits must total at least $1,000.
You must also verify your identity.
You may use the money for rent, gas, buying a Black Friday special, attending a friend’s wedding, and other personal and household expenses that can’t wait till the next payday.
However, you may not cover business or educational expenses with this money.
Does Dave app give you money instantly?
When requesting a advance from Dave’s ExtraCash account, you can elect to send money to any account you wish at no charge (but a two to three business day period to clear), or you can access funds instantly.
With express delivery, you can send it to your Dave Account, where it is available within minutes, or to an external bank account and external debit card, within an hour.
However, this instant access to cash requires you to pay an express fee that depends on the amount of the transfer money, with transfers to external bank accounts costing more than those to a Dave Spending Account.
How much eoes Dave let you advance?
The service has gradually increased the advance amount. Although a maximum of $75 is often quoted online, this amount is outdated, and the current maximum advance Dave offers is $500.
The average cash advance offered as of October 10, 2022, was $120. Eligibility on your account resets at midnight.
Learn more at the Dave app website.
How long do you have to pay Dave back?
When you take an advance, your ExtraCash Account balance goes into the negative; the agreement between you and Dave is that you will return the balance in this account to $0 (settle the account).
If you have a fixed pay period, you will be required to settle on your paydays; should you have no fixed pay period, you must usually settle on the nearest Friday after you take the advance. Users who cannot settle at these times incur no late fees for settling later; the platform may take partial payments to cover the amount advanced.
Once your settlement has reflected, bringing the balance back to $0, you could beeligible for another advance. You can have a positive balance in your ExtraCash account, up to a maximum of $500.
How much must you pay back to Dave?
On your settlement date, or as soon as possible afterward, you must repay the advance, any express fee for immediate access to cash, and a tip (the app defaults to 10%; you can set it to anything between 0% and 25%).
This tip allows you to reward Dave for helping you while remaining in control of your expenses. A portion of your tip goes to Feeding America, which feeds the hungry via a network of community food banks.
In addition, Dave charges a monthly fee of $1. As a result, these are not entirely free advances, but they are still more affordable advances than traditional payday loans.
Dave app features
The app has several useful features for savers. Let’s take a look.
Insights
Insights provide automatic account monitoring that analyzes your paycheck or wages, monthly debits for rent, utilities, and other services, and your monthly average spend on things like gas and food.
You can also manually add expenses to the tool. The budgeting tools let you view your budget and see how much you can still spend before your next paycheck is paid into your savings account.
Dave’s notification services can send you a warning text if a bill could put you in danger of an overdraft fee.

Side hustle
If you regularly find yourself anxiously waiting for the next payday to come, why not take on a side job to earn a bit more money?
Dave has partnered with scores of partner businesses that offer flexible, local jobs in your area through Dave’s Side Hustle feature. You can also fill out Dave Surveys and get paid for each survey completed.
Early direct deposit
Depending on your employer’s specific payroll policies, Dave may be able to get you access to your paycheck up to two days early via an early direct deposit.
Dave app fees
For a $1 monthly membership fee, Dave analyzes your spending patterns to predict whether you’re in danger of becoming overdrawn and avoid an overdraft fee by giving you a advance of up to $5o0.
The app itself has no minimum balance requirement, late fees, or overdraft fees (although it is possible for your account to become overdrawn).
You can withdraw money at 37 thousand MoneyPass ATMs nationwide, with no ATM fees. When repaying advances (a process referred to by Dave as settlement), you are encouraged to leave a tip (between 1% and 25% of the advance amount).

What people are saying about Dave app: Customer reviews
The Dave app has 575.8k ratings on Apple App Store, with an average rating of five stars. On Google Play Store, 426k people have rated this app, with an average rating of four-and-a-half stars.
Is Dave right for you?
Being a Dave member can be very useful if you have occasional small emergency expenses; you can use the advances instead of personal loans that would take longer to apply for and access.
It is also a money-saver when you use it to avoid overdraft fees that would otherwise gobble up an appreciable chunk of your pay.
However, using it as an adjunct to an emergency savings account is best.
Ensure that your next paycheck will cover the settlement and your monthly expenses and that you have a checking account that receives recurring direct deposits.

Who the Dave app isn’t right for
The Dave app isn’t right for everyone. If you know you have a habit of spending more money than you earn, you should know that the app isn’t a quick fix for these habits. Dave’s advance feature is also not ideal if you need same-day cash with low repayments (due to the express fees Dave charges). Same-day personal loans are probably a better solution in this case.
If you need a longer repayment term than the service offers, personal loans or a credit card are a better option.
Some people prefer not to share their bank account details, Tax Identification Number, or Social Security number with Dave.
Is Dave a trustworthy app?
Dave uses various banking-level security measures, such as 2048-bit encryption, to protect data transmission (including your SSN and password). Banking credentials are used once for authentication purposes.
The data center housing the Dave servers is monitored by security personnel around the clock. Independent security experts are engaged to assess and test site security.
FDIC insures every account up to $250,000.

Dave vs. Brigit
Brigit also offers budgeting tools and cash advances up to $250. However, its monthly fee is $9.99, and its encryption is only 256-bit.

So I have a confession. Something about blog-land has been on my mind for quite some time. Where the hell are the men in design? Have they all passed out under the choking cloud of chevron, glitter, acrylic, gold, pink, and brass? Are they buried under furry pillows, floral prints and Moroccan everything? I’m dying to know how all the interior design lovers around the interwebs have rendered their men mute. Because I know the guy in my life would never let such an overtly feminized style fly.
And if I’m going to be honest, I kinda can’t stand they hyper-girlie design trends either. I find spaces grounded in thoughtful, yet practical design both refreshing and calming.
There are a few key elements to this look.
A less is more approach. If there’s one thing I’ve come to learn over the years, particularly now that we have a baby – you really don’t need a lot of stuff! Sticking to utilitarian pieces will serve you in the long term. Yes, you can accessorize with things that you truly love but the tchotchke is only something you have to dust (or keep out of little fingers’ reach!).
Only add pieces with meaning. When you have an empty space it can be very tempting to fill it. But instead or running to the nearest big box take a more considered approach. What do you really need? What do you really really love?
Prioritize function as well as form. There isn’t a lot of room for precious pieces in this kind of style. That doesn’t mean you can’t collect beatutiful pieces but there’s a lot to be said for a gorgeous leather ottoma that will petina with age or a marble coffee table that will stand the test of time.
I’m excited to keep these design mantras in mind to create a space that is as useful as it is beautiful. Here is my current furniture inspiration for the media room.
couch | floor lamp | living room | rug | side table | pillow | pouf | art
I see a cozy sectional that will be ready for lots of hours spent lounging. The key to making the room interesting is a variety of textures. Linen, leather, a wool rug, a cool textured mirror. I might sneak in a pop of metallic with a killer floor lamp, but we’ll have to see if that passes muster with my guy’s discerning design eye. With this insipiration in hand, I’m excited to move onto the next step – shopping!
Be sure to check out the rest of this week’s updates.
