In 1978, Don Lancaster — a computer and electronics geek — published a book called The Incredible Secret Money Machine. Though the title smacks of get-rich-quick schemes, The Incredible Secret Money Machine is really about starting and running a small business.
To Lancaster, a “money machine” is any venture that generates “nickels”. Nickels are small streams of revenue from individual customers. If your goal is simply to earn a comfortable income for yourself by doing something you love, then this book can help you explore the idea of business ownership. It’s not going to help you launch the next Google or Microsoft, though. Lancaster is all about nickels, not about dollars.
Getting Started
Lancaster says that in order to build a money machine, you must adhere to four basic beliefs. (Note that I’ve left his very-1970s language as-is.)
You have to be heavily into a technical or craft trip on a total lifestyle basis. “Your own trip has to be the absolute center of everything you do, everything you work with, and everything you believe in. Doing it has to be much more important to you than making money, more important than worrying about what people think, and more important than behaving, competing, or complying the way that other people think you should.”
You must want to stay in control. “For your money machine to work, you have to want to spend much of your time, energy, and effort improving both yourself and the general goodness of the technical or craft trip you are into.”
Your income goals should be just enough to keep going. “Getting filthy rich should be nowhere in your plans. So long as you can continue doing what you like in the direction you want to go, that’s all that should matter. The great irony of your incredible secret money machine is that the less you strive for income, the more of it will come your way, and, more importantly, the more you will be able to do with what you already have.”
Be gentle. “Your money machine should be forever small and decentralized. It should never compete head-on with others. It should complement and advance what others are doing. Your money machine’s products should genuinely help people at a fair or more-than-fair price, never being a rip-off either to suppliers or to customers.”
This isn’t the sort of advice I expect to get from a book about entrepreneurship. I expect to read grand promises, and glowing talk of profits to come. I expect money to be the object. Money isn’t the object with Lancaster. It’s one of the goals, to be sure, but it’s more important to create a “lifestyle business”, one that you enjoy and want to pursue.
Tips for Building a Money Machine
But how do you do build your own money machine? What’s the best way to start the stream of nickels? And how do you keep them coming? Though The Incredible Secret Money Machine is only 160 pages long, it’s packed with strategies and tactics for building a successful business, including:
Have as many different sources of income as possible. By this Lancaster doesn’t mean you should work multiple jobs — he means that you should have as many customers as possible. It’s better to have 1,000 people each giving you a nickel a month than it is to have one person giving you $50 a month. If that one person decides to spend $50/month elsewhere, you’re in trouble. But if even 100 people stop paying their nickel, you’ll still earn $45/month.
Have complementary sources of income. Another way to keep your cash flow strong is to operate two money machines. Many entrepreneurs I’ve known have done this. I have a friend who is a published novelist; in his spare time, he also takes on free-lance writing projects. My aunt baked wedding cakes, did catering, and was a professional photographer. My wellness coach doesn’t just counsel clients about physical fitness, but she also does stage entertainment.
Deal directly with the customer. If you write a book and publish it traditionally, for example, there’s an entire industry designed to suck the profit out of the process before you get your nickels. Instead, content yourself with fewer sales at a higher margin by dealing directly with the customer.
Work toward deferred income. “What you do for your money machine should generate nickels both today and tomorrow,” Lancaster writes.
You should work toward automatically generating yourself a long stream of future nickels that needs little or no more attention from you. This is admittedly very tricky to do, but if you can pull this off, your money machine will fly by itself, freeing you in the future to do bigger and better things.
An obvious way to generate residual income is to assure you have satisfied customers. Satisfied customers come back for more, and they tell their friends about your services.
Know the difference between cold cash, imaginary money, and megabucks. Megabucks are the big jackpots you get from writing a bestseller, from winning the lottery, from inventing the next Rubik’s Cube. Megabucks can make your rich, but the odds are basically zilch that you’ll ever find them. Imaginary money is the kind you dream about: “If I’m able to sell my Thneed to Wal-Mart, I’ll be set!” Imaginary money doesn’t exist. It’s potential money contingent on a lot of things. Lancaster encourages readers to focus on cash: “Cold cash is what you get when you supply a quality product to a known bunch of customers at a bargain price. It is the only type of income your money machine should seek.”
Separate frugality from stupidity. Know when you can cut corners to reduce costs, and know when it’s important to pay for quality. (And always be sure that you deliver quality to your customers.)
Avoid psychic energy sinks. Anything that distracts you from your purpose is a psychic energy sink. Lancaster decries television as a prominent energy sink. But he warns that debt, divorce, and anything else that produces “bad vibes” should be avoided. Stay positive. Stay focused.
These are just a few of the strategies and tactics Lancaster shares in The Incredible Secret Money Machine. You won’t find the specific details necessary to start a business here. The book doesn’t give step-by-step instructions for how to form a partnership, or how to publicize your product, etc. Instead, it’s filled with broad ideas and suggestions. Some of them are out-dated. All of them are enhanced by (or suffer from) Lancaster’s brash style.
A Real-Life Money Machine
As I was reading The Incredible Secret Money Machine, it reminded me of another book I’d read recently. In John T. Reed’s How to Write, Publish, and Sell Your Own How-To Book, the author describes his “money machine” at length (though he never calls it that).
Reed has self-published over 70 how-to books. He actively sells more than 30 of them from his web site. This gives him 30+ different sources of income.
He writes about four different subjects — real-estate investing, coaching youth sports, success, and self-publishing. This gives him four complementary audiences.
Reed deals directly with customers instead of with book distributors. This gives him many sources of nickels instead of just one or two sources of dollars.
His books give him deferred income. They keep producing income year after year.
Reed’s book business seems to embody the “money machine” philosophy. I’m glad to have read his Self-Publishing book at roughly the same time that I read Lancaster’s Money Machine — the latter provides the Big Picture, while the former looks at nuts and bolts.
Conclusion
Some of the advice in The Incredible Secret Money Machine (believe in biorhythms!) now seems quaint, 30 years after the book was published. (Lancaster produced a revision in 1991, but I haven’t read it.) The author’s “hip” language and many of his examples are outdated. But smart readers can extrapolate, and still learn a lot. You have to be able to read Lancaster’s advice on letterhead, for example, and think of it as advice for web sites.
Although Lancaster believes that you must be into your money machine on a total lifestyle basis, I’m not sure that’s true. I think you can have a part-time money machine. A full-time money machine will be more profitable, of course, but a part-time money machine is a great way to start. (Get Rich Slowly has been a part-time money machine for me, for example.)
Finding the Book
This book can be expensive and hard to find — it’s an underground classic. My county library system doesn’t have it. I bought my copy for $15 from Powell’s. Amazon currently has seven copies under $10. In theory, you can order the revised edition from the author’s web site. I’m going to give it a shot, but I’m wary — the site looks as if it hasn’t been updated in ten years. (You can take a sneak peek at the second edition in this PDF from Lancaster’s site.)

Or is it time to switch gears and find something that I love to do and make money at the same time?
I have been asking this question so many times, I finally decided to make a list of answers.
This is not just for those who want to know what they should do with their lives; it’s also for anybody looking for some new ideas on how they can fit into a career that will bring them satisfaction and happiness.
Recently, my middle schooler was asked, what do you want to do beyond high school? And he looked at me shell shocked.
Remarkably, this question of what should I do for a living is a doozy to answer. So, don’t feel alone if you cannot answer it… yet.
How do I find out what I should do for a living?

Tips for finding a career you love
When you’re looking for work, it’s important to remember that there are many different ways of making a living. You can be an artist or designer in your own home studio, or run your own business. The key is to figure out what your interests are, and then find a way to use those skills in the work you love doing.
The goal of this article is not just to help you find a job that pays the bills, but to help you find work that is satisfying, meaningful, and fun.
Here are some tips to keep in mind as you go through the process of figuring out what you want to do with your life.
#1 – Focus on You
Don’t listen to people who tell you that you should do one thing. If your parents want to see you be a doctor, or if your friends think it’s important for you to have a “real” job, you might be tempted to listen to them.
Don’t let anyone else tell you what your passion is, or how you should spend your life.
Determine what’s important for YOU!
As you go through the process of figuring out what to do with your life, keep in mind that there are many different ways to live a happy and fulfilling life. You don’t have to be a doctor to help other people. You don’t have to work in an office all day, every day.
Do what you love and the money will follow.
If you do something that you love, you will never have to work a day in your life. If you do what you love, and are good at it, people will pay for that service or product.
Do what makes YOU happy. If you’re not happy, no one else will be either.
Don’t let anyone tell you what to do with your life. You should never have to justify your decisions or choices to anyone. You are the only one who has to live with your decisions and choices.
Do what you want, not what other people want for you or think that you should do. Period.
#2 – Identify What Interests You & Makes You Tick
There are a variety of ways you can go about finding out what interests you. You can read books and articles on different topics, talk to people with various careers, or take online quizzes and assessments – like this what should I do for a living quiz.
The first step to finding the right career for you is to identify what interests you intellectually.
What fascinates you?
What makes you feel like you are not working?
How do you want to spend your free time?
Once you know what fascinates you, the next step is to figure out how you can turn this into a career. Then, pursue your career interests relentlessly so you can reach your full potential.
#3 – Uncover your Strengths
Identifying your strengths is the key to finding opportunities that will be a good fit for you and enable you to reach your full potential.
Here are some things to take note of:
Pay attention to what you enjoy doing.
Notice when you feel most energized and engaged.
Consider what you do well naturally.
Reflect on feedback you’ve received from others.
Ask yourself how you can use your strengths more often in your current role or situation.
Once you know what they are, make sure to pursue opportunities that are based on them. This will help you stay focused and motivated in your work and life.
#4 – Match Your Values With Your Interests
Your values are the things that are most important to you in life. They guide your decisions and actions. They direct you to live a life that is meaningful to you.
There are many ways to identify your values. One way is to think about what is most important to you in different areas of your life, such as your relationships, work, leisure activities, and so on. Another way is to think about what you would like people to say about you when you are no longer here. What do you want them to remember about you?
Once you have identified your values, it can be helpful to write them down or share them with someone who will support and encourage you in living according to them.
When you link your values and interests together, it creates a powerful combination that can help you to live a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
When you know what is important to you (values) and what makes you happy and excited (interests), it becomes much easier to make decisions about how to spend your time and energy.
For example, let’s say one of your values is “family” and one of your interests is “cooking”. You could combine these by cooking meals for your family members or friends. Not only would this be enjoyable for you (because it aligns with your interest in cooking), but it would also be meaningful because it would be an act of love and care for those closest to you (which aligns with the value of family).
#5 – Consider your Lifestyle
Are you okay living below your means? Or do you prefer to flash your cash?
If you tend to spend money frivolously or struggle with saving money, then you need to be a high-worth earner. If you are okay living stingy, then a modest salary will probably work for you.
Keep in mind your lifestyle and what would be the best fit for you.
Consider if the hours are flexible, if you’d have time for hobbies and other interests, and how the commute looks. Sometimes rethinking your opportunities can give you a better perspective on what’s truly important to you.
Other Questions to Ponder:
Do you want a job that will consume most of your time?
Do you want a job where you can have a good work-life balance?
Are you okay with being tied to one location or have the flexibility to move around?
Are you willing to travel for work? If so, how often and how far?
What are your salary expectations? Are you looking for health benefits, paid vacation, or other perks?
Ultimately, there are many factors going into your decision. When considering a new potential career opportunity, it’s important to think about more than just the paper qualifications and the salary.
#6 – Spend Time Doing your Research
The best way to find a career you love is to first figure out what it is that you’re passionate about. What are the things that make you excited to get out of bed in the morning? Once you know what your passions are, research careers that align with those interests.
This just doesn’t happen overnight.
In fact, I recently went back to something of interest to me years ago because it would provide the time freedom I desired.
Spend time doing your research and following all the steps we cover in this post.
#7 – Find a career that matches your skills and interests
It can be difficult to identify what you want to do with your life, especially if you’re feeling lost or uncertain.
However, once you’ve identified what areas of interest might suit your skillset, try to link these interests with some type of career options.
Consider how your interests would fit into potential careers before choosing one.
It’s important to consider how your unique passions would fit into certain occupations or fields of work before choosing one. This will help you find a career that is satisfying and fulfilling. Consider the skills and interests you have and search for job openings that match them.
Start by researching the field you’re interested in.
# 8 – Talk to people in the field
There are a few ways to find people to talk to about your career interests. You can start by talking to friends and family members who might know someone in the field you’re interested in. You can also look for professional organizations related to your field of interest, or search for networking events in your area.
When you’re talking to someone about their career, it’s important to ask questions that will help you learn more about the field and whether it’s a good fit for you. Some questions you might want to ask include:
What does a typical day look like?
What is the most challenging part of the job?
What are the biggest rewards of the job?
These people will have better insights than what you can find searching the internet.
#9 – Get experience in the field
Oh, I cannot tell you how important this step is!
You have heard a similar story… my son dreamed of being an engineer and we planned to send him to engineering school. After his internship, the thought of being an engineer sucked the life out of him. Glad we learned this lesson before we spend money on his college education.
That is why I believe schools like this are so important to get real-life experience doing what you think you want to do for a living.
Consider internships or volunteer work to get your foot in the door.
Gaining experience can help you learn more about a particular field or company, and whether or not it’s the right fit for you.
#10 – Be open to change
Here are some things to keep in mind with change.
1. Change can lead to new opportunities: When you’re open to change, you’re also open to new opportunities. Embracing change can help you find a new job, start a business, or even move to a new city.
2. Change can help you grow: Personal growth is important for a fulfilling life. Change can challenge you and push you out of your comfort zone, leading to personal growth.
3. Change can be exciting: If you’re bored with your current situation, change can be exciting. It’s a chance to start fresh and experience something new.
4. Change can be positive: Even if it’s difficult, change can ultimately be positive. It can lead to improved relationships, increased happiness, and a better life overall.”

Building wealth isn’t a result of idly daydreaming about success or money; high income earners have worked and sacrificed to achieve their dreams.
While some luck may be involved, most successful businessmen and women agree that luck is a small part of the secret to successful investing.
After all, capital is necessary if you plan to make money with investments and the only way to raise or build your own capital base is to make smart financial decisions and save money to devote to investments.
Here are six secrets you need to know to see success when investing to build wealth:
Living Below Your Means
Most people who have built real wealth started out by living below their income and saving or investing the extra money.
Today, Warren Buffet, one of the richest men in America, still lives in the house he purchased in 1958 for $31,500. In fact, most everyday millionaires aren’t Wall Street hedge fund managers or CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, but individuals with well-paid jobs who have learned to manage their budget, max out their contributions to retirement accounts, continuously invest in index funds, and just keep saving.
Saving money on non-essentials means having more money to invest. The ideal is to have your money working for you instead of you working for your money, and that simple philosophy eludes most families today. That helps explain why the average retirement savings by age is so low.
The perfect example for me is that I’ve postponed buying a new car for a couple years now. I love cars, and as a 20-something, it would be awesome for me to have a 300+ horsepower luxury sports car. The payments would affordable and I could buy one if I wanted to, so what’s stopping me?
A simple back-of-the-envelope calculation tells me that spending $50,000 plus interest payments over the course of 5 years could prevent me from earning tens of thousands in investment income.
So early in my life, I’d rather create a nest egg to buffer any future cash needs – something I learned from my parents, who used their savings to buy a business. I’d rather be investing in my 20s than spending.
Unfortunately, the average American spends virtually every penny they earn each year, leaving nothing for savings and investment. Instead of buying the most expensive house or car you can afford, save money on your mortgage and car loan payments by purchasing a less expensive home.
Historically, the long-run returns on your primary residence are less than 5%. Instead, the money you do save on your mortgage can be invested in higher-yielding opportunities, such as the stock market, a small business or investment property. Many of the wealthiest people in the world started out with very little and built their fortunes by making good decisions. There is no reason you can’t join their ranks.
Education and Knowledge
The English philosopher, Francis Bacon said “Knowledge is power”. Formal education is not central to knowledge, but studying and researching potential investments and investors builds experience. Examining the good and bad choices made by other investors can help you avoid at least some common mistakes, and by having a thorough understanding of all the options available in the market, you can pull information from different sources to determine which opportunity will inevitably be the highest performer.
When you have capital, there are many types of investments with varying degrees of risk. As a rule, the riskier the investment, the greater the rate of return. Learning how to mix different types of investments to maximize and diversify gains and minimize losses is one of the best ways to make money over time. This means combining safe investment options, like Treasuries and high yield money markets, with riskier ones, such as growth stocks, real estate, or a small business acquisition.
Determination and Risk Tolerance
Successful investors are prepared for setbacks and do not become discouraged when they take a loss or buy an investment with lower returns than they anticipated. Remember, no investment opportunity with the potential for a huge return is ever guaranteed. If it was, everyone would take advantage of it. Anyone who wants to become financially independent has to have the ability to tolerate risk. The key is to never make the same mistake twice and to incorporate the things you learned from that failure into your next venture.
About a month ago, I had the opportunity to buy a very authoritative website in the self-help/productivity niche. The site had received about 500,000 visits per month consistently for the last 3 years, and there was tremendous potential to increase revenues due to under-monetization. The price was reasonable and the seller trustworthy, so why did I pass on the deal?
Plain and simple: fear.
I’ve been burned before in transactions. After buying a website with thousands of visits per month and a solid revenue stream, Google’s algorithm penalized the site into oblivion and the total investment was lost. Despite that risk being highly unlikely in this case, I passed up on a great opportunity because I was scared. I won’t be making that mistake again.
The difference between those who become successful and those who do not often comes down to determination, persistence, and overcoming your fear of risk. The investor who continues to take chances and make informed decisions to buy investments he/she truly believes in ends up with far greater wealth than the individual who stashes all his cash in a savings account, too afraid to make the rational decision and diversify his money. When a disciplined investor is determined to prioritize his long-term retirement needs over consumption, he re-invests his returns instead of spending them.
You Have To Be In It To Win It
Many people postpone financial planning, believing they don’t have the means to start now. This is usually followed by the self-promise that they will start next week, next paycheck, or next year. Then life intervenes and they decide to postpone saving and investing again.
Families who earn their financial independence start by investing their money early and building their portfolio over time. Like you’ll read in every personal finance blog – don’t underestimate the power and importance of compounding interest. Failing to take action is the biggest barrier between the average person and wealth.
Investing Time
While every investor, like every gambler, occasionally has a streak of luck, few successful investors depend on luck over the long run. Most take the time to research different industries, business models and companies.
Consider investing your second job. The more information you absorb and the better you understand a field, the more likely you are to find the gems others overlook.
One of the best examples of this is real estate. I have my Real Estate Broker’s License, and as a habit, I check out MLS listings every Sunday night. The more properties I review, the more insight I have into what is available in each neighborhood or city, the cost per square foot, how the interior and exterior condition of the property affects the final price, etc. Over time, you start to get a feel for the market, and when you see an undervalued property, you have the confidence to jump in and grab it.
Believing in Success
Some wealthy investors, like Sam Walton (Walmart) and Bill Gates (Microsoft), choose to invest in their own businesses while others, like Warren Buffet, invested by buying stocks and bonds to fund other people’s businesses.
One thing that all successful businessmen have in common is an absolute belief in that they will meet or exceed the goals they have set for themselves. It is this complete faith in their own ability that makes these individuals keep striving, even after setbacks and disappointments. Consider making money from home – start a home-based business by turning a passion or hobby into a commercial venture.
There are no real secrets to building wealth and the opportunity is available to anyone who is willing to make the necessary sacrifices and put in the required effort. Just as there are no secrets, there are no shortcuts to financial success. Knowledge, time and hard work can make anyone the next American success story. Ordinary people can do extraordinary things, just ask the rich and the famous who were once ordinary too.

I can’t believe the Grow Your Dough Throwdown is over!
It’s been an exhilarating ride, and I wish I could say that I was excited to share the results.
Alas, my portfolio got its butt kicked, while my wife’s portfolio, on the other hand, did rather well.
In fact, I think everyone kicked my butt.
Oh, well; life goes on…..
The exciting thing is that the Grow Your Dough Throw Down 2.0 is ready to launch, and I will have details at the end of this post.
Until then, let’s take a look at how I did.
TD Ameritrade – My Lousy Portfolio
If you recall, previously I had purchased five different stocks with my initial portfolio with TD Ameritrade. Two of my stocks have performed horribly: EHealthInsurance.com and Yahoo.com. My other three were doing okay, but not great. Those were Fidelity Guarantee and Life (an insurance company IPO), Dunkin Donuts, and Bank of New York. After three quarters of the year, my portfolio was down almost $100, and I knew there was no way that I would catch the leader, so I thought to myself, “Why not go big or go home?”
I sold all of my positions, then purchased RIG, which is Transocean, an offshore drilling contractor. I read about Transocean from another stock picker and he absolutely loved it, and I thought with a 17% dividend and a potential to buy on a dip, I might have a chance to walk away with the Grow Your Dough Throwdown title.
My hope fell short. Really short.
As oil continued to drop, so did Transocean’s stock price. My total account value is down to $551.73, for a net return loss of 45% for the year. In case you haven’t figured this out yet, that is not how you Grow Your Dough, not in the very least. I went from having a balanced portfolio to becoming a speculative investor, which is basically what I warn all my clients against.
Luckily, it was only for $1000, and the stock still could come back… ha, ha because you heard that one before. Either way, I definitely did not win the Throwdown, but I don’t think I took last.
Is there a trophy for next to last? 🙂
Ally Invest – The Blue Chippers
Ally Invest , then Tradeking, was the brokerage firm that I used to build a Blue Chip portfolio. The stocks I selected were General Electric, Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Microsoft, and Verizon. For the year, the account didn’t do as great as I had hoped, having a total value of $1032.41 at year-end. Three of the stocks ended up being down for the year – General Electric, McDonalds and Verizon – with the other two being up. Either way, we are still up, so I can’t be too unhappy about that.
Motif – The New Kid on the Block
Motif, which you will hear more about in a sec, was the investment platform that I was least familiar with. The more Motif investing reviews I read and how it is structured, the more I like it, especially for those who are wanting to invest in a specific period over a sector in the market.
I purchased three different Motifs: the Onward Online Ad’s Motif, the Cleantech Everywhere Motif, and the Obamacare Motif. For the end of the year, my portfolio value is $1032.18, barely beating out the Blue Chip portfolio at TradeKing. Once again, I will share more about Motif here at the end of the post.
Betterment – So Easy
Out of all of the investment platforms I opened an account with, Betterment was no question the easiest one to get my money funded and then invested. It’s even easier than opening an account at Capital One 360.
For the year, my total account balance is $1060.82. With how Betterment investing works, I just selected my target goal, and then they constructed a portfolio that consisted of 90% stocks and 10% bonds, which are predominantly invested in ETF’s. I’m still a big fan of Betterment, especially for those who know little about investing and want a super slick interface to get started.
Lending Club
The two peer-to-peer platforms in Prosper and Lending Club fared well for the last part of the year as well. Lending Club has a new feature where you can see your account returns, and you can also adjust that for past-due notes. Basically, this feature is for those that make defaults on their loans. For the net annualized return, with Lending Club it was 6.75%, with an adjustment account value of $1050.93.
These notes are currently past due and haven’t defaulted yet, so if those happen to pay my net annualized return for the year, they would be 12.24%, with an account value of $1090.41. Considering how low interest rates are, and having made money off your CDs, even the 6.75% is nothing to sneeze at.
Prosper
With Prosper, they currently don’t have the adjusted return, so the total value is $1086.51 for an 8.64% return.
The Winners
It definitely became a neck and neck race for who was going to win the Grow Your Dough Throw Down. Barely squeaking a victory by less than $14 was Phil Taylor from PTMoney.com. His total value was $1327.05. Below is a screen shot of some of his holdings for the year.
In a very close second place was Rob Berger from Doughroller.net. His account value year-end was $1313.55. Rob went the Tesla, AT&T, and Apple approach to yield his return.
Congratulations fellas, you both did well and definitely take down this CFP®.
Grow Your Dough ThrowDown 2.0
I am excited to announce we are going to continue the Grow Your Dough Throw Down into 2015. This time, we are going to have 20 different personal finance bloggers participate.
Motif, which I mentioned above, has agreed to be a sponsor for the event. They are going to create a custom leader board where you will be able to track my Motif, including the other 19 participant Motifs, to see how we are doing on a daily basis. I’m so excited that Motif was pumped about the Grow Your Dough Throw Down this past year, and when they approached me about creating the custom leader board and being a part of it, I was definitely all ears.
Update 11/20/22: XBOX gift cards are back (affiliate link)
Original Post 11/17/22:
Dell.com stopped carrying XBOX gift cards for sale. We don’t know if the change is permanent or temporary.
XBOX gift cards were very popular with American Express Business Platinum cardholders as a means of using up their $400 in annual Dell credits. Instead of buying products directly from Dell.com, we were able to buy XBOX gift cards which can then be loaded to your Microsoft account and used to buy things like the Surface laptop or anything else. People often had issues with Dell not processing their orders, etc., but the XBOX option was one that a lot of people at least attempted to use.
Save more, spend smarter, and make your money go further
With all of today’s home-based tech gadgets and virtual personal assistants, smart homes are quickly becoming ubiquitous. And with high demand for connected products, so too comes ease of use, accessibility and affordability.
But as with all expenses, it’s important to budget for smart tech upgrades to your abode. Luckily, it’s easier (and more affordable) than it’s ever been. Here, we explore some of the more common smart home tech investments, along with a few things to consider when deciding whether they’re worth the cash.
Virtual Voice Assistants
These devices use natural language processing (NLP) to match a user’s voice commands and execute an action, like “Turn off the lights.” Many of these voice assistants use a “wake word,” like the name of the device (“Hey Google,” for example) in order to alert the assistant so that it’s ready to listen to you.
From online shopping to reading your email for you, virtual voice assistants have the potential to do a myriad of helpful things around your home.
Major Brands: The top players in the virtual voice assistant arena are Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Homepod, Microsoft’s Cortana and Google’s Home — but the list is growing. It’s been reported that Facebook may be working with Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri to create its own smart speaker in this burgeoning market.
Average Price Range: The most basic versions, like Amazon’s Echo Dot, can start at as little as about $50, while more mid-range devices go for about $130 (Google’s Home) and high-range assistants like Apple’s Homepod go for $349.
Life Expectancy: While it’s hard to predict how long these up-and-coming tech devices will last, it’s safe to say that there will be plenty of similar products for a long time to come. Not only that, but virtual assistants will likely continue to improve significantly when it comes to their capabilities, connectivity and affordability. To put things into perspective, it took 13 years for the television to reach 50 million Americans but only two for smart speakers to do the same thing.
Is it Worth It? It depends on how (and how much) you’ll be using the device. If you call on your virtual voice assistant at every whim, the upfront cost may be well worth the convenience. On the other hand, a 2017 Ovum survey of both U.S. and U.K. residents said that about 50 percent of users don’t find virtual assistants useful. Though it’s difficult to narrow down the reasons why, it’s a clear message to manufacturers that they need to up their game to stay competitive.
Smart Thermostats
Intelligent heating and cooling systems have taken the tech world by storm, particularly due to their affordability and savings potential. These smart thermostats learn users’ habits — when they leave for and come home — to optimize in-home temperatures in a way that traditional thermostats can’t. After all, if you’re going away on vacation, there’s no need to leave your AC on the whole time, but you might want to turn it up an hour or two before you return. Cue smart thermostats.
Major Brands: There’s a lot to choose from when it comes to intelligent thermostat needs. Popular brands include Ecobee4, Nest Learning Thermostat, Lux/Geo Wi-Fi Thermostat, Lux Kono Smart Thermostat, Bosch Connected Control BCC100 Thermostat and Honeywell Lyric T5 Wi-Fi Thermostat.
Average Price Range: While you can find some smart thermostats for under $100, most range from about $170 to $260, depending on their uses and features. Some cost as much as $500.
Life Expectancy: Intelligent thermostats have the potential to last just as long as traditional thermostats, as long as you maintain them correctly and don’t misuse them. However, it’s important to note that some smart thermostats are hardwired into your home while others aren’t. If yours operate on battery power, it could last a full two years before needing new batteries — but always pay attention when your thermostat alerts that its batteries are low.
Is it Worth It? Not only are smart thermostats extremely convenient, they also have massive potential for saving you some cash on utilities. While the upfront cost may be a bit hefty, smart thermostats often pay for themselves in the long run. The Energy Star program states that homes equipped with smart thermostats can save up to $180 per year on heating and cooling. What’s more, intelligent thermostats can provide you with reports that show you how to optimize your heating and cooling settings to save even more money.
Smart Lighting
Yep, even light bulbs are getting smarter these days — and not just in the “clap on, clap off!” way, either. With smart LEDs, you can connect all the light fixtures in your home to your virtual voice assistant or smartphone to control individual lights in every room. Not only is this super handy, but it can also provide an extra layer of security if, say, you’re out of town and want to randomly turn lights on and off so it appears that someone’s home. Plus, color-changing bulbs make for great mood lighting and can even sync up to music and movies for extra effect.
Major Brands: Though brand doesn’t matter as much when it comes to intelligent light bulbs, popular bulbs include the Philips Hue White, Philips Hue White and Color Ambience A19 Star, C by GE Starter Pack, Cree Connected Light Bulb, Eufy Lumos Smart Bulb White, LIFX Color 1000, Ikea Tradfri Gateway Kit and MiPow Playbulb Rainbow.
Average Price Range: While you can find affordable options under $20, some intelligent light bulb kits cost upward of $200, depending on the number of bulbs and features included.
Life Expectancy: Regardless of price, the vast majority of smart LEDs have a lifespan greater than 20 years. That’s anywhere from 20,000 to 50,000 hours — or up to five times longer than any other light bulb in stores today. Compare that to the measly 1,200 hours of an average incandescent light bulb, or a CFL’s 8,000 hours.
Is it Worth It? Even if you do decide to outfit your home with a $200 smart light bulb kit, it’s arguably still worth it. They last practically forever, they can help keep your home safer, you can control them from your smart device from anywhere you have internet access, and they’re better for the environment than traditional bulbs.
Even though the upfront cost of smart LEDs can be a little off-putting, you might consider this an investment purchase. Yes, they’re more expensive at first, but take a look at this calculation from Simple Family Finance, which added up the total costs of all three types of bulbs, plus 25,000 hours of electricity usage — this is how the expenses broke down:
Incandescent: $218.50
CFLs: $64.63
LEDs: $53.75
That’s a lot less money over the long term, which means a lot more money in your wallet for making other awesome smart upgrades to your home. Smart garage door, anyone? (Yep, they have those, too.)
