A surefire way to wrap up the year in style and bring your home to life for the holidays is to deck your halls — and living room, entryway, dining room and the exterior of your home.
We asked the owner of Digs Home and Garden, 3905 Chenoweth Square, for ideas on what holiday decorating ideas will be on-trend in this holiday season, especially if you live in the Louisville area.
“Louisville is pretty traditional when it comes to decorating for the holidays but it’s also fun to add a few new things into the mix, ” Ben Palmer-Ball, owner of Digs Home and Garden, told the Courier Journal. “Some customers come to the store and buy the entire Christmas tree; lights, ornaments, garland and all. But it’s more realistic to take an inventory of what you already own, decide on a theme, and update your tree by adding some trending colors in ribbons, garland, and sprigs.”
almost 3,000 U.S. homeowners by the home improvement website House Method, most Americans, including those of us in Kentucky, start to decorate for the holidays on Thanksgiving weekend. The beginning of Advent, which begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, is another popular day to put up the Christmas tree. This year, Advent begins on Sunday, Dec. 3.
Decking the halls can do more than simply add a festive flair to the look of your home. If you were thinking of putting off your holiday decorating in 2023, here are a couple of positive reasons to reconsider. According to experts, it can make your spirits bright by boosting your mood and can contribute to social activity, which has proven mental and emotional benefits.
Journal of Environmental Psychology shows that when people see a home decorated for the holidays, they tend to view the residents as more social and approachable.
So, what are you waiting for? From the newest ideas in lighting to stylish color combinations, here are six holiday trends that will be popular in Louisville for the Christmas of 2023.
Light your tree for maximum twinkle
A well-lit tree needs about 100 lights per foot. For instance, a 6-foot tree requires 600 lights. Palmer-Ball likes to use Rice lights which are small round LED bulbs that look like large grains of, you guessed it, rice.
Additionally, he likes LED lighting over incandescent bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, they use up to 75% less energy and last 25 times as long.
change colors simply by pushing a button.
Bold and beautiful blue tones will update your 2023 Christmas tree
It’s no surprise the color blue is welcome to the Christmas party. Blue is the world’s favorite color and is commonly included as one of the five main colors on Christmas lights.
For 2023, Palmer-Ball has decorated a number of trees in his store with pops of blue accessories in various hues.
“Blue is a trending color this year, “he said. “When you pair the blue ornaments with red ornaments it becomes a festive and fresh look.”
Plush ornaments are a fun and colorful Christmas tree accessory
Brightly colored soft ornaments are a popular and unbreakable trend that adds a soft and whimsical touch to your Christmas tree.
Great for families with small children or pets, these vibrant ornaments can be cartoonish and clever and are easy to store at the end of the holiday season.
Sweet petite tabletop Christmas trees are in big demand
In 2023, Palmer-Ball is selling a lot of small trees that can sit on top of a coffee table or chest of drawers.
“I think some customers don’t always want the big commitment of a full-sized tree,” he said. “Plus adding a smaller tree to your decor like in the kitchen or the den can give you another space to display specific ornaments or a theme.”
For instance, if you have collected a lot of the ornaments your kids’ have made through the years, rather than clumping them in on your main tree, display them on their own tabletop tree. The kids will love it!
On display at Digs, we also discovered a bright tabletop tree for the kitchen filled with food-themed ornaments and another covered in nothing but adorable dogs.
Classic colors are updated with a twist on the 2023 Christmas trees
The classics, red, green and white will always spell C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S, but we’re excited to see how the new Christmas decorating ideas for 2023 push the envelope.
“Red and green are always traditional at Christmas but maybe this year you focus more on the red accents and ornaments and find things that accentuate that,” Palmer-Ball said. “The next year twist it up and focus more on the green accessories.”
A tall white flocked tree at Digs is a centerpiece and a tradition at the store. Stocked with red and white glass balls, red plaid ribbons, and ornaments in the shape of Cardinals and cranberry sprigs, the red and white color palate could easily be flipped next year to variations in green and white.
Modern frosted Christmas trees are a popular trend in 2023
We know one way to guarantee it will be a white Christmas. Flocked or frosted Christmas trees have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their ability to create a winter wonderland-like atmosphere in your home. Palmer-Ball said today’s trees are better made than the clumpy flocked tree your grandmother displayed.
“These trees today are light and subtle and many have a lot of space between the branches so you can really see the ornaments,” he said. “The colors really pop against the artificial white snow.”
Digs Home and Garden, which opened in 2000, has become a year-round home decor and gift destination in St. Matthews. The store is especially festive leading up to the Christmas holidays when Palmer-Ball and his staff spend hours transforming the large space into a winter wonderland for the holiday season.
“Take a look around and you can tell, I don’t know when to stop,” laughed Palmer-Ball.
Luckily Palmer-Ball’s overindulgence means more creative tree-trimming options and holiday home decor ideas for you. Happy holidays!

Most airlines make it harder to earn elite status each year. Southwest Airlines is going the other way.
The airline is making it easier for members to qualify for its A-List elite status, and adding two free drink coupons to its list of benefits for top-tier elite status members.
In other changes to the Rapid Rewards program, Southwest is adding a “cash plus points” redemption option that will allow flyers to cover a portion of a flight’s cost with points (instead of “all or nothing”).
Here’s what to know about the changes for 2024.
Easier path to elite status
The most significant change Southwest Airlines is making to the Rapid Rewards program for 2024 involves elite status qualification.
Rapid Rewards members can earn A-List or A-List Preferred status by either flying a certain number of segments or accruing a certain number of “Tier Qualifying Points,” (TQP) which are earned through flying and spending on certain co-branded Southwest credit cards.
How do you get A-List on Southwest?
Starting on Jan. 1, 2024, Rapid Rewards members can qualify for elite status as follows:
20 one-way flights (down from 25) or 35,000 TQP (no change).
A-List Preferred
40 one-way flight (down from 50) or 70,000 TQP (no change).
Though Southwest is not reducing the number of TQP a member will need for A-List or A-List Preferred status, the airline is making it easier to earn points through credit card spending.
Cardholders will earn TQP more easily
Starting Jan. 1, 2024, members will earn 1,500 tier qualifying points toward A-List and A-List preferred for every $5,000 spent on the following credit cards:
Currently, those cards earn 1,500 TQP per $10,000 in spending, so Southwest has reduced the spending required in half.
Southwest to add cash + points option
Southwest is also making it easier for members to redeem points — particularly if they don’t have enough for an award flight — with a “cash plus points” redemption option.
Some loyalty programs, especially hotels, already offer this option. This will allow members to book a flight using a combination of Rapid Rewards points and cash. You’ll need at least 1,000 points in your account to use this option.
“Cash plus points” bookings can appeal to members short on points, but they’ll still want to be careful that they’re getting a good value for their Southwest points. The calculation should look like this: (Full cash price – cash price with points)/number of points.
Southwest is expected to roll out this change sometime in spring 2024.
A-List Preferred members get two free drinks
One additional change to the Rapid Rewards program will have top-tier Southwest Rapid Rewards elite status members saying an extra “Cheers!”
A-List Preferred members will receive two free inflight premium beverages (such as beer, wine or spirits) on eligible flights. The drink coupons will be loaded right onto the mobile boarding pass.
This will begin sooner than the other changes, effective Nov. 6, 2023.
What these changes mean for Southwest flyers in 2024
Southwest’s tweaks to its Rapid Rewards program for 2024 is generally good for frequent flyers, making it easier to earn A-List and A-List Preferred status through lowered benchmarks and more efficient TQP earnings for credit cardholders. The two free drinks for A-List Preferred members don’t hurt, either.
It’s also worth nothing, however, Southwest elite status comes with fewer tangible benefits since the airline already has free checked bags, open seating and no premium cabins. Still, since there’s open seating, A-List members’ ability to secure an earlier spot in the boarding process — arguably the best perk of Southwest elite status — certainly comes in handy for frequent flyers.

In Orlando, Florida, there’s no shortage of bars that’ll make you a mocktail.
Many are almost certainly designed for the under-21 crowd, including “The Simpsons”-inspired Flaming Moe. The bubbling, citrusy, nonalcoholic concoction is served at Universal Studios Florida.
But in the city known for being family-friendly, there’s an entirely different set of bars specifically not for kids, such as The Bandbox, a 1920s Art Deco-inspired speakeasy. Customers must be 21 or older, and while there’s no official dress code, there’s a more elegant vibe at this intimate lounge.
The Bandbox owner, Kevin Zepf, emphasizes that his bar doesn’t serve traditional mocktails, which tend to be ultra-sweet and contain ingredients like juices, syrups and sodas.
In contrast to classics like Shirley Temples, virgin Piña Coladas or even the Flaming Moe, The Bandbox serves nonalcoholic craft cocktails using alternative or distilled spirits.
When The Bandbox opened in 2022, it became Orlando’s first spirit-free cocktail-tasting lounge and bottle shop. While it’s Orlando’s first, it’s just one of a growing list of bars, hotels and cruise lines worldwide that serve high-end, alcohol-free cocktails.
The same month that The Bandbox opened, the ette-brand hotel in Orlando opened nearby. The ette hotel doesn’t serve any alcohol (though guests can pack their own). Unlike the myriad kid-friendly hotels nearby serving up Mickey waffles, the 126-room luxury property distinguishes itself with quiet grounds and a serene spa — a sharp contrast to Walt Disney World just a mile away.
It’s not just Orlando that’s booming with nonalcoholic drinks. In Portland, Oregon, a city known for craft beers, the nonalcoholic scene is brewing thanks to brands like Portland-based Lolo Hops. Lolo Hops uses Pacific Northwest-grown hops to make sparkling nonalcoholic beverages that sell at markets throughout the city.
Big travel brands are joining in, too. This spring, Carnival Cruise Line’s Alchemy Bar launched a menu of seven cocktails made with nonalcoholic spirits. Note that you’ll still need to be at least 21 years old to get in.
With the new menu, Carnival has claimed the title of first cruise line to offer a full range of mocktails. Similarly, bars inside the newest Hilton brand, Tempo by Hilton, serve what the company calls “free-spirited” cocktails. Carnival and Hilton use products from nonalcoholic spirit-maker Lyre’s as primary ingredients, rather than juices and sodas seen in typical mocktails.
Who are alcohol-free drinks for?
Nonalcoholic beverages aren’t necessarily designed just for people who won’t drink alcohol. In fact, 78% of people who say they drink no- or low-alcohol drinks also partake in full-strength alcohol, according to IWSR, a company that supplies data and analysis on the global beverage alcohol market.
While just 18% of people who drink nonalcoholic drinks are people who refrain from drinking alcohol altogether, IWSR says that figure is growing, led by younger (drinking-age) consumers.
“People come in for a variety of reasons, from women who can’t drink because they are pregnant, to folks looking for a sober-curious experience,” says The Bandbox’s Zepf. “Because we don’t offer alcohol, it takes pressure off those that don’t like to be pressured into drinking.”
Nonalcoholic craft cocktails are pricier than most other nonalcoholic drinks.
The Flaming Moe — which “The Unofficial Universal Theme Parks Cookbook” author Ashley Craft concocts using three ingredients: Fanta Orange, fruit punch and dry ice — can be purchased inside Universal Studios Florida for $9. It includes a collectible cup that is specially designed, which Craft says is necessary given the dry ice compartment.
While $9 is far more than the roughly $4 the same restaurant charges for simply a Fanta Orange, it’s still less than the $12 cost for a draft beer.
When sailing with Carnival, cruisers can opt in to unlimited soda and juice packages, starting at $9.50 per day. But the package that includes cocktails starts at $59.95 per day — and that’s whether you opt for alcoholic or nonalcoholic cocktails.
Why are vacation spots adopting alcohol-free offerings?
Whether or not price is a motivator, people consume nonalcoholic beverages for plenty of reasons.
“The pandemic changed the mindsets of Americans to reevaluate their drinking habits and the money spent on going out and drinking,” Zepf says. “Folks were searching for healthier alternatives during the pandemic, and that’s when the nonalcoholic drink industry really started.”
With alcohol comes the risk of a hangover — an outcome that mixes poorly with vacationers who might trek miles through theme parks and be tossed around on thrill rides the next day.
“As the theme-park capital of the U.S., where experiences and entertainment are paramount, Orlando is such an untapped market when it comes to the world of nonalcoholic drinks,” Zepf says.
There’s also the fact that more companies now are manufacturing nonalcoholic spirits. Seedlip, which bills itself as the world’s first distilled nonalcoholic spirits brand, is still relatively young. Founded in 2015, Seedlip manufactures the three top-selling nonalcoholic spirits on Drizly, an e-commerce alcohol marketplace.
Drizly recorded a 50% increase in sales year-over-year for its nonalcoholic spirits in 2022. But while interest in booze-free beverages is growing, the market is still small. Drizly says nonalcoholic spirits accounted for just 0.06% of its overall 2022 sales.

Luckily, Portland is a great city for date nights — yes, even compared to Seattle. However, with so many fantastic options located throughout Portland’s best neighborhoods, deciding on one is a daunting task. The cost of living in Portland is also enough to make you cautiously scan the menu for prices before committing, and obviously, you want just the right vibe.
We’ve taken these factors and more into consideration to bring you the best romantic restaurants in Portland.
Ava Gene’s

Location: 3377 SE Division St, Portland, OR 97202
Portland’s Richmond neighborhood is home to the light and airy Italian eatery Ava Gene’s, the first on our list of best romantic restaurants in Portland. It’s adorned by lots of marble, lacy curtains, floating lights and plenty of greenery. The atmosphere will absorb you and your date as soon as you walk through the door.
The menu is equally enchanting, offering a variety of locally sourced, hyper-seasonal Italian-inspired dishes dreamed up by chef and owner Joshua McFadden, who is making culinary waves on an international level. Special events like their Trattoria Nights and wine series celebrations offer super special price-fixed meals, but the regular menu is dazzling and modestly priced, including a fantastic selection of local wines.

Canard

Location: 734 E Burnside St, Portland, OR 97214
A more low-key offshoot of Portland’s famed French restaurant, Le Pigeon, Canard in Buckman offers a taste of fine dining at a price point and setting that’s more reminiscent of a bistro and wine bar. Small plates are key here, so make sure that you and your date are on the same page about sharing because you’ll want a taste of everything.
The ambiance is a cross between casual and sophisticated, reflected in the menu with dishes like tantalizingly elegant steam burgers, foie gras dumplings and the extravagant duck stack pancakes.
Kachka

Location: 960 SE 11th Ave, Portland, OR 97214
There’s something specifically romantic about toasting a flight of specialized vodka over plates of classic, family-recipe Russian dishes at Kachka in the Buckman neighborhood. Maybe it’s the history and tradition you can taste in every bite, maybe it’s the high ceilings and tall, tapestry-covered walls or maybe it’s just the infused spirits, but there’s something uniquely intoxicating about the place. And it’s certainly one of the best romantic restaurants in Portland.
Share a plate of pelmeni, trade forkfuls of the herring under a fur coat and enjoy the mutually shared bliss of this faraway culinary adventure right here in Portland.
Khun Pic’s Banh Thai

There are plenty of Thai restaurants in Portland, but few that are as charming as Khun Pic’s. This hidden gem is in a beautiful Victorian home with a gorgeous garden patio in Sunnyside. A meal here feels more like being invited into a family’s house and served a home-cooked meal. Enjoy your favorite reasonably-priced, traditional Thai food selections while basking in the romantic glow for a quaint date night.
Location: 4039 Mississippi Ave N Ste 101 Portland, OR 97227
A pizza date is always a good idea. Sharing a cheesy pie is fun, light-hearted and keeps the mood casual yet intimate. That doesn’t mean the food isn’t amazing. Lovely’s Fifty Fifty in the Mississippi neighborhood serves some of the freshest, most beautiful toppings you’ll ever find on a pizza in a warm, welcoming space.
As a bonus, there’s no need to buy your date flowers. Lovely’s will serve them for you baked right in. Do yourself a favor and save room for dessert. They make their organic ice cream in-house and it’s the perfect way to cap off a romantic evening.
Looking for a dinner destination that’s more on the hip and trendy end of the spectrum? Head downtown to Luc Lac Vietnamese Kitchen for a vibrant menu of creative takes on traditional Vietnamese dishes in an atmosphere that’s bustling, but not too loud or distracting for quality table talk. Loosen up with a tasty cocktail like the Asian Vacation and get to know each other better over pho, rice plates and elevated banh mi.

Is Kansas City in Kansas, or is it in Missouri? It’s kind of both. Both are individually incorporated cities, but together they make up the greater Kansas City metropolitan area.
Long ago, in the 1830s, KCMO got started as a trade outpost to fit hunters with furs and traps. Now, that’s morphed into manufacturing and it dabbles in tech, transportation and healthcare. For visitors, it’s better known for LEGOLAND, the National World War I Museum, tons of art galleries and museums, the Airline History Museum, too many fountains to count and, of course, Kansas City barbecue.
The concentration of barbecue alone is enough to focus on, as Kansas City has the most barbecue restaurants per capita than anywhere else in the U.S. Characterized by burnt ends with extra flavor, and a thicker-than-most tomato-based sweet barbecue sauce smothered on the smoked meat (not on the side!), Kansas City barbecue has made a name for itself for obvious reasons.
Residents cheer on several pro sports teams, like the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Royals and the Kansas City Current.
The Kansas City metro area has 2.34 million residents. The median age is 35 years old and the median household earns about $55,000. With a whopping 240 neighborhoods making up the city, there’s plenty of variety and subcultures to add to the spice of life for Kansas City residents. Here are 15 of the up-and-coming best neighborhoods in Kansas City for 2022.

Constructed in the 1920s, Brookside has that beloved historical feeling. But throw in a couple of community staples, like festivals, parades and fairs, and you’ve got a local color you can’t beat.
Kansas City residents claim Brookside is “quintessential Kansas City.” From ghost tours, toy shops, local makers and retailers, art galleries and museums — not to mention all the great food, pubs and cafes — Brookside has a little bit of everything for everyone and offers a whole lot of fun.

The Country Club Plaza can often feel otherworldly to the rest of Kansas City, thanks to its Spanish-inspired architecture. It’s a pretty popular area since it’s known as the shopping capital of the city, spanning 15 blocks of retail. From designer to local, there’s a shop for everyone.
If visitors don’t come for the shopping, they probably came for the food because it’s just that good. And if they didn’t come for either, they definitely came for one of the two art museums in the neighborhood. If nothing else, maybe they’re there to count all the fountains, of which there are many. It’s no wonder this is one of the best neighborhoods in Kansas City.

Like many neighborhoods in metropolitan cities across the U.S., Crossroads was once a warehouse district. When the manufacturers left, the area was vacant until someone had a vision. The area became what it’s known for today, the Crossroads Arts District.
Each month on the first Friday, this neighborhood puts on an art crawl spanning 20 blocks with 70 retailers involved. The neighborhood is also home to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, which stages theatrical performances, music and dance recitals.
The area has plenty of breweries and bars to make a whole evening out of the arts, along with great restaurants, too. Hipsters and young professionals flock to the area for its creative vibes and good times.

East Bottoms was a booming neighborhood closer to its founding back around 1800. It was well known for its J. Rieger & Co. Distillery, producer of over 100 different products, founded in 1887.
The distillery was eventually forced to shut down during the prohibition, but in 2014, the original owner’s great-great-great-grandson got the distillery up and running again. In addition to its specialty spirits you can taste all over the country in craft cocktails, this distillery opened up its own tasting and dining rooms which revitalized the area and urged other pubs and breweries to join the mix, making it one of the best neighborhoods in Kansas City.
This is a great area in Kansas City to meet up with friends to have a great time.

Two of KCMO’s most notable, must-see museums are in the 18th & Vine District: The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the American Jazz Museum. Throw in some barbecue (there are plenty of options in the area), and you have three of Kansas City’s biggest passions: Baseball, jazz and barbecue.
Since it’s such a storied area, residents and visitors can enjoy live entertainment and music regularly.

Butting up against the Missouri River, River Market has gone by many names in the past, but was the city’s first incorporated district. Its name aptly implies that long ago, the river-side access lent this area to a lot of trade. That still carries into today, though it looks a little different now thanks in part to its bustling open-air farmer’s market.
If you’re into old mobster histories, this district has plenty of that, thanks to its River Quay (just one of the area’s many previous names) era now long ago. A mob war broke out and resulted in burning buildings and businesses, along with a few mob members’ deaths. After the fiasco, the mob left the area, as depicted in “Casino.”
If you lean away from all things true-crime, River Market’s fresh and bustling food, bar and boutique scenes serve as plenty of an attraction, too.

How would you feel if one spooky night you discovered your new home also housed a family of evil spirits or long dead ghosts?
Even if you don’t believe in haunted houses, there are plenty of people out there who do—or who just want to hedge their bets. But could a history of haunted happenings really hurt the value of your home when it came time to sell?
The numbers don’t lie
Of course, how your property is received all depends on its particular brand of spooky.
A couple of studies in recent years confirm that a reputation for hauntedness has an impact on values. A realtor.com survey found that only about about one-quarter of buyers are open to buying a haunted home, especially if they get a discount, while 38 percent would not consider a haunted home purchase.
Another study by Redfin found that homes located close to cemeteries take longer to sell, but that the wait might just be worth it, since they tend to sell for prices higher than identical homes located in the same city but at a greater distance from a cemetery.
According to a study by two business professors at Wright University, though, houses where murder or suicide have occurred can take 50% longer to sell and at an average of 2.4 percent less than comparable homes.
The rules of buying and selling haunted real estate
Rumors of ghosts raise the question of disclosure.
Most states require sellers to fill out a standard form, revealing what they know about the property’s physical condition. Although the wording may vary state to state, most real estate laws require sellers to disclose “material facts” such as structural concerns, the age of the roof and shingles, leaks in the foundation and walls, existing mold and mildew, and total square footage.
In a 1991 New York case, though, a buyer sued the seller and the seller’s realtor for failure to disclose the house’s ghostly reputation.
Before putting the house up for sale, the seller wrote about her bumps in the night for the local paper and Readers’ Digest, but the buyers were unaware of the home’s reputation. Although the court did not rule nondisclosure of the house’s reputation as fraudulent, it did allow the buyer to back out of his contract and get his down payment back.
So what does this mean for you?
