Forcing Bulbs Isn’t Hard. So Why Don’t More People Try It?

Elizabeth Roberts enjoys decorating for the holidays, but you won’t find much in the way of traditional Christmas decorations at this architect’s brownstone in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.

“I don’t typically go all out,” said Ms. Roberts, 54, who shares the home with her husband, Michael McKnight, 55, their son, Dean, 14, and a rescue dog, Ace. “We typically don’t have a tree here. Or, if we’re hosting Christmas, we’ll often get a tree just the day before, and it comes down right after that.”

(Spoiler alert: If you think you’re on Ms. Roberts’s holiday gift list this year, keep an eye on your mailbox.) “You start it at the beginning of December,” she said, “and by the end of December, it’s usually blooming.”

How to Get Your Closet Under Control

For years, Peter Pennoyer and Katie Ridder used the holidays as an opportunity to travel with their children, Jane, now 30, Tony, 28, and Gigi, 23.

That meant “we often wouldn’t have as beautiful a Christmas tree,” Mr. Pennoyer, 66, said. “I remember one year in Hawaii when we ended up with something from Home Depot that was pink and about 19 inches tall.”

The South End is a unique neighborhood. Like many in Boston, it is built on reclaimed marshland. But the modern-day South End is a bustling, vibrant, diverse district filled with hipsters and doctors and old school Bostonians, trendy eateries and dive bars and pricey mansions and housing projects.

The South End is alive with public parks and green spaces, restaurants and vintage clothing shops, mansions and South End apartments. Even before its swaths of gentrification, it was a haven for the LGBTQ community.

But its most distinguishing feature is its Victorian-style row houses. In fact, South End, Boston’s 300-acre district of original Victorian homes which is the largest collection in the nation.

Where is the South End in Boston?

Despite its name, the South End is not the south end of Boston. South End is not even directly south of downtown, that’s reserved for Southie. Sure, there was a time when the South End was the southern limits of the city, but that was back in the days when most of Boston was tidal marshes.

The South End sits southwest of downtown, with Chinatown forming its northern border. Back Bay and Fenway-Kenmore are along its western side. Roxbury (and more specifically Lower Roxbury) is to its south. And, yes, South Boston is to the east. The Mass Pike and the I-93 Central Artery join at the northeast corner. Melnea Cass Boulevard and the Massachusetts Avenue Connector are along South End’s south end. The Boston & Providence Railroad and the Southwest Corridor Park form its northwest border.

Tremont and Washington Streets and Columbus Avenue are the primary east/west thoroughfares. The South End, Boston ZIP Code 02118 covers most of the neighborhood.

South End overview

The South End in part is as homey and traditional Boston as the old neighborhoods of Southie. It’s also in part as buzzy and hip as Fenway–Kenmore. And parts are as upscale as the best of Back Bay.

It’s the South End’s diversity that keeps it fresh and unique. Every block of South End is distinct from every other, and a plethora of different people, cultures and economic backgrounds exist.

  • Studio average rent: $2,586
  • One-bedroom average rent: $3,304
  • Two-bedroom average rent: $4,590

Today, BMC is the largest Level I trauma center in New England. The Boston University School of Medicine, which uses BMC as its teaching hospital, is next door. Nearby is the South End Community Health Center offering affordable comprehensive healthcare and community services.

How to make a money dispenser box?

Sounds easy, right? Well, it is. It just takes some practice like these money cake ideas.

Consider using this idea for occasions like birthdays, weddings, or graduation celebrations. After all, who doesn’t love the sight of cascading cash pulled from an exquisitely crafted box?

Step 1: Choose a Money Gift Box

Opt for a box with a festive allure for birthdays or celebratory events.

The box size and shape determine how much money it can hold and how smoothly it dispenses.

The design showcases your creativity and speaks volumes about the occasion.

Remember, it’s not just a gift, it’s an experience. If you want to surprise a friend, pick a box that pops with colors.

Your chosen money gift box sets the stage; make it count!

Step 2: Prepare the Money Roll

You’re onto a fun-filled step of crafting your own money dispenser box, and preparing the money roll!

This part is crucial, so follow closely.

  • First, gather your dollar bills. Getting new dollar bills may be a challenge, so make sure you ask your bank first.
  • Next, neatly insert the dollar bills in the transparency bags. Also, include a few memorable notes.
  • Then, tape the bills end-to-end or use the small sticky dots. Ensure to connect the bills seamlessly and cleanly to maintain the charm of the constant pull.
  • Once you’ve crafted a nice lengthy string of bills, begin rolling. Start from one end and maintain a tight, steady roll until it looks like a small, compact money bundle.

A quick expert tip here – if the roll seems loose or flimsy, don’t worry. Tightening it up as you go often helps achieve compactness.

Congratulations, you’re one step closer to creating an absolute hit of a gift!

Remember, the joy is in both the making and the giving! Keep up the great work, and let’s dive into the next step soon.

Step 3: Make the Boxes

This is where you incorporate the money into the box, effectively transforming it into a thrilling dispenser.

Insert your tightly wrapped roll of money into the gift box. Make sure you leave the pull the money out.

Next, you can add trinkets or other mementos to the box if you prefer.

Make sure to securely tape it, ensuring that it’s attached beautifully and strongly.

Step 4: Give Out the Boxes

Now for the fun part! Give your money gift box to the recipient or recipients.

As your friend unwraps the seemingly ordinary gift, the initial confusion transitions into pure delight as they pull out a long string of dollar bills from the box. Their bemused smile and surprised laughter truly makes the effort worthwhile.

Remember, it’s not just the monetary value of this gift that matters, but the joyful surprise and the shared happiness it brings.

Get creative with your gift-giving and make each celebration truly memorable.

Looking to find the best places to sell video games?

Whether you have a brand new video game or a used video game, you can probably sell it online or at a place near you.

In fact, I have bought many used video games from sellers over the years, so I know firsthand that people do buy games – both new and old! And, I have done this both online and at places I shopped at in person.

It’s normal for gamers to have lots of video games. When new game systems come out and our interests change, selling the games we don’t play anymore can be a great way to make some extra money, after all.

Key Takeaways

  • Selling video games can make you extra money and lets other people enjoy the games you don’t play anymore.
  • How much a game is worth depends a lot on its market value, condition, and how much people want it.
  • You can sell video games online at places like Decluttr and eBay.
  • You can sell video games in person at places like GameStop and Craigslist.

Best Places To Sell Video Games Online

Below are the best places to sell video games online.

1. Decluttr

Decluttr is a popular site for selling used items, including video games on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo.

To sell a game, you will enter or scan the barcode using Decluttr’s site, which will give you an instant quote if your item is accepted. With a free shipping label through UPS, Decluttr makes it easy to sell games for cash, and you get paid by direct deposit or PayPal.

Whether you are looking to sell just one used video game or if you have a bulk amount, this is an easy site to sell on, especially with their free prepaid shipping label.

If you have other items to sell too (such as DVDs, game consoles, CDs, etc.), this is one of the best websites if you want to sell your stuff.

2. eBay

eBay is a popular online marketplace where you can sell new or used video games. You can either auction your games or set a fixed price. You will have to do all the work, such as taking pictures of what you are selling, writing a description, and mailing it off.

Keep in mind that eBay charges fees and there are shipping costs too.

I have sold on eBay many times in the past, and it is great if you want to make the most money. This is because you are cutting out any middle person and doing all the work yourself.

I have also bought several used retro video games and gaming consoles on eBay. The platform makes it extremely easy to find anything and everything from around the world. Whether you are looking at popular games like Super Mario Bros or retro games on Atari or Sega – there is probably a fit for you to list your video games on eBay.

3. Amazon Trade-In

Amazon Trade-In is a convenient place for trading in your video games for Amazon gift cards with their instant trade-ins.

Plus, everyone has heard of Amazon so you know it is a real site.

Simply search for the title, select the correct game, and give an honest review of the game’s condition. Shipping is free with a printable label from Amazon, which makes it easy to trade in multiple games at once if you have a bulk amount that you want to sell.

4. OfferUp

OfferUp is a site where you can sell video games to people nearby. It’s easy to use, and you can list your games to reach more people in your area.

I did a quick search and found hundreds of used video games for sale in my town, so there is definitely a wide selection. OfferUp does charge a fee of around 10% to 15% for an item once it sells. This is something that you will want to think about when selling your video games as this seller fee can add up quickly.

5. Swappa

Swappa is a safe and easy website for selling used items like video games. You simply create a free listing on Swappa and pay a fee of 3% after it sells.

Payment is done through PayPal and shipping costs are paid by the seller.

On Swappa, you can sell Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox, 3DS, Wii, Nintendo NES, Nintendo SNES, and more – from gaming consoles to video games and even controllers.

6. Gameflip

Gameflip is a marketplace for selling gaming items, including video games and even in-game items (this is what sets it apart from the other sites on this list).

The in-game items feature is something that I find really interesting. Yes, these are digital items that you don’t even have physically. Instead, these would be items that you have in the actual video game.

For example, you can sell a sword or outfit that you have in a game to another player. These are items that you may win or find while you are playing a video game – and you can actually sell these digital items to other people and make money!

You can also sell both physical and digital games, set your own prices, and talk with possible buyers on Gameflip – making it easy to sell your video games and other items.

Best Places To Sell Video Games Near You

Below are the best places to sell video games near you.

7. GameStop

If you’re a video gamer, then you’ve definitely heard of GameStop.

At GameStop, you can trade in or sell your games, gaming consoles, and accessories. Their website and app give you up-to-date values for your items so you know what to expect, which I think is very nice.

For example, I went to the GameStop trade-in site and stated that I wanted to sell my Pokemon Silver Version for the Game Boy. This is an old game that is pretty much a classic. And GameStop says that I can get up to $15.40 for it in store credit or up to $10.78 in cash for it. With less than 10 clicks I was able to see how much I can get for each video game, which is so easy!

You can simply go to your local GameStop store and make the sale in person. This option is great for those who prefer dealing with a well-established retailer and want to sell video games for cash.

8. Best Buy

Best Buy is a store where you can trade in your games in-store for a Best Buy gift card.

This might be perfect if you plan on purchasing other electronics from them.

To get a trade-in estimate, you just go to their website and input your game’s details. They will handle the rest, which makes the whole trade-in process really quick and easy.

9. Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is great for those who want to sell their games within their local area without fees.

It does mean direct interaction with potential buyers, but you can negotiate the price as you need to. You just post your game with a brief description and wait for interested buyers to message you on Facebook.

10. Craigslist

Similar to Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist is a popular option for selling items locally. There are no listing fees for using Craigslist.

You just create a listing and include pictures and a price. This option is great for people who don’t mind handling the transaction themselves and want to make extra cash.

I have sold many things on Craigslist over the years, and it is a very easy site to use. There are not very many used video games sold on this site, but I do love how they don’t charge any fees, so you get to keep more of your money. However, you usually are not able to make as much because your pool of buyers is smaller.

11. Game X Change

Game X Change focuses on trading and selling games, consoles, board games, figurines, and so much more. Pretty much anything related to games can be sold through this site.

On their website, it’s easy to check how much your game is worth and what you can get in return.

Plus, they pay in cash or credit.

12. Pawn shops

Pawn shops can be an option for selling your used games, especially if they’re in good condition.

Pawn stores might not give you the most amount of money compared to other places (this is because they don’t specialize in games), but it’s an alternative if you need quick cash and don’t want any hassle as you won’t need to make a listing, process payments, deduct seller fees, prepare a shipment, or anything like that.

How Much Used Video Games Are Worth

When figuring out how much your used video games are worth, think about a few things that can affect their value.

Popular game titles

How popular a game is can really impact how much you can sell it for. If a game is a classic or really popular, it’s usually worth more than games that aren’t well-known.

Condition and rarity

The condition of the game is important in deciding how much it’s worth. Games with their original cases and manuals usually sell for more money. Also, if a game is rare or a limited edition, it might be worth more.

Time of year

The time of year can also change how much used video games are worth. When new games in a series come out, older ones might be more wanted. Also, during the holiday season, more people want video games to give as gifts, so their prices might go up.

Preparing your video games for sale

Before selling your video games, here are a few things you can do to make them worth more money:

  1. Clean and inspect – Gently clean the game and inspect it for any visible damage.
  2. Test – Play the game to make sure it works (no one wants to buy a broken game).
  3. Gather everything – Find case inserts, manuals, or other materials that came with the game.

Change is constant: How ‘bout U.S. Steel, the Pittsburgh steel producer that played a key role in the nation’s industrialization, being acquired by Nippon Steel in an all-cash deal valued at approximately $14.1 billion? (Let’s not forget that GM and Ford have been dwarfed by Tesla, Mercedes, Toyota, and even Volvo.) I had my share of “hard hat” jobs growing up, so I noticed OSHA announcing a switch from traditional hard hats to safety helmets. Is that the politically correct term now? Speaking of terms, “smishing” is a term that combines “SMS” and “phishing” where hackers try to get your personal and banking information through unsolicited text messages on mobile devices by pretending to be government agencies, companies that you might have done business with, or a package delivery service. They’ll say something to get your urgent attention like a text about a free gift that you have to pay a small “shipping fee” to receive or they will send a warning about suspicious activity on your account. Be careful out there! Today’s podcast can be found here, and this week’s is sponsored by Lender Toolkit’s AI-powered AI Underwriter and Prism borrower income automation tools. Get loans approved in under two minutes. By providing lightning-fast underwriting decisions, your market reputation with borrowers and Realtors will soar. Conventional Conforming News

The lion’s share of loans are processed and/or underwritten and/or sold to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Who’s doing what out there?

Fannie Mae turned some heads recently with more thoughts on Attorney Opinion Letters in the title industry. Stacy Mestayer observed, “Fannie’s announcement will expand the use of AOLs to hundreds of thousands of more properties. This is an interesting update to many as ALTA has led many in the industry (and on Capitol Hill) to believe that title waivers and title alternatives are the same. While Fannie has opted not to pursue a pilot for title waivers at this time, it never wavered in its support for the AOL alternative.”

Two new underwriting solutions are now available from Fannie Mae to help lenders better serve borrowers. DU early assessment, which provides a DU risk assessment during a lender’s pre-qualification process with a single bureau soft credit report, and Income Calculator, which helps easily calculate income for self-employed borrowers. Discover how these innovations and other updates help simplify the lending process and work toward removing barriers and improving equitable access to credit.

Fannie Mae Announcement SEL-2023-11: December Selling Guide Updates includes information on permitting lenders to use alternative options to meet verbal verification of employment requirements, allowing optional use of Income Calculator to determine the monthly qualifying income for self-employed borrowers, allowing lenders to gross-up certain nontaxable income without providing additional documentation. Incorporate a list of programs into policy to assist lenders with their review of shared equity providers and transactions, and other miscellaneous updates.

Fannie Mae updated the Partner Playbook for the Credit Score and Credit Reports Initiative to include information on FHFA’s Nov. 21 Enterprise Regulatory Capital Framework (ERCF) final rule, share ways the public can participate in the stakeholder forums, and highlight the timeline to reflect the delay of milestones related to the bi-merge credit reporting option initially proposed for 4Q 2023 and 1Q 2024.

During the weekend of Feb. 10, 2024, Fannie Mae will implement an update to DU version 11.1. This will include updates to improve DU’s ability to identify rent payment history within asset verification reports and other changes to align with the Selling Guide. For additional information, view Fannie Mae DU Version 11.1 Feb. Update Release Notes.

In the December 2023 Appraiser Update, Fannie’s Mae’s 25th edition, timely appraisal topics from a 2015 Lender Letter is revisited, recent changes to requirements for manufactured housing appraisals, explain how to get answers when you need them, and offer a reminder for how to treat seller concessions.

Per Pennymac Announcement 23-85, Conventional LLPAs effective for all Best Efforts Commitments taken on or after Thursday, December 14, 2023 will be updated as follows:

Kind Lending announced the adoption of Freddie Mac guidance as pertains to ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units) and the allowance of income from the ADU used in qualifying.

Capital Markets

Global financial conditions are loosening as investors expect central banks to begin lowering interest rates next year. A Goldman Sachs index that tracks corporate borrowing costs and capital markets conditions showed on Friday global financial conditions at their most accommodating level since early August. The end of the belief that central banks will keep interest rates “higher for longer” has fueled optimism in the corporate bond market, with yields on riskier corporate debt falling below 8 percent for the first time since February. Even though we haven’t seen one rate cut yet…There has been a significant easing in financial conditions that is giving companies breathing room.

Let me repeat something from last week that came from Dr. Elliot Eisenberg! “While the Fed kept rates unchanged, something entirely expected, it was the shift from a hawkish pause, one with a rate hike bias, as was the case after the last two meetings, to a dovish pause, a pause with a future rate reduction bias due to the declining inflation rate, that led to a record Dow Jones close. Discussion will now focus on the date of the first cut.” Sure enough, that is what we are seeing.

After Fed Chair Powell and his colleagues indicated that they are likely to cut rates three times next year, traders have largely ignored efforts by Fed officials to temper expectations and market rates have fallen sharply in anticipation of the central bank’s policy pivot becoming a reality. There has been a lot of Fed-speak after the FOMC meeting attempting to pour cold water on the narrative that rate cuts are coming quickly and aggressively, the latest being Chicago Fed President Goolsbee saying that he was a bit confused by the market’s reaction to the latest FOMC meeting/comments and Cleveland Fed President Mester saying that the market is a little bit ahead of the Fed’s rate-cut view. The Fed claims that markets are over their skis with respect to rate cuts, but markets are maintaining pricing for six rate cuts by the Fed before the end of 2024, with the first cut coming in March.

Putting aside the Fed momentarily, this week will have a lot of housing data. We received the NAHB Housing market index for November yesterday, which increased from the last reading, but not quite to market expectations. Today brings housing starts/building permits and existing home sales are tomorrow. We will also get another revision to Q3 GDP, personal incomes and outlays, and leading indicators. Real GDP is expected to be revised down slightly in the third estimate due to downward revisions to September retail sales, business inventories, and industrial production. Personal income is expected to have accelerated in November due to strong gains in wages and salaries pushing household spending higher.

Also on tap this week is the Fed’s favored inflation measure, PCE, where core inflation is expected to come in at a 3.3 percent annualized pace, down 0.2 percent from the previous month.

Today’s economic calendar is under way with housing starts and building permits for November: 1.56 million (higher than expected) and 1.46 million, respectively. Expectations were for starts slipping 17k versus the prior month to 1.355 million with permits 48k lower at 1.450 million. Later today brings Redbook same store sales and remarks from Atlanta Fed President Bostic. Today is also Class D 48-hours. We begin the day with current coupon Agency MBS prices a few ticks (32nds) better than Monday night and the 10-year yielding 3.90 after closing yesterday at 3.96 percent.

North West is truly feeling the Christmas spirit.

In a series of TikToks shared by the 10-year-old’s joint account with mom Kim Kardashian, North wore a “Sia-inspired” set of pigtails made of ribbons clipped to her hair. She doubled down on the festive outfit with a Christmas sweater of a Santa flexing his muscles that said, “Welcome to the North Swole.”

The pre-teen wore feather-hemmed plaid pants and Christmas socks to complete the look, which she wore as she danced around her beautifully decorated home to TikTok remixes of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Ariana Grande’s rendition of “Last Christmas,” and several of Sia’s holiday hits.

Last week, North shared a closer look at some of the family home’s decor, set to a sped-up version of Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me.”

The pan of the room showed numerous Christmas trees — one in all pink adorned with handbags, a few silver ones and a few in a darker gray. There were holiday treats all around the room, and a sign over the bed that read “North Pole.”

“Holiday decor- one of the kids rooms!🎄,” the caption read.

Last month, Kardashian brought North and Chicago, 5½, to see Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas One And All! show at the Hollywood Bowl. The three were joined by Kris Jenner, Khloé Kardashian, True, 5½, and Dream, 7.

Not only did they get to enjoy the show together, but they also got to meet the Queen of Christmas and her daughter, 12-year-old Monroe, and pose for some photos afterward.

“The Queen of Christmas!!!! For the little girls very FIRST concert ever, we went to see the Queen herself, @mariahcarey !! We all had the best time, creating the most magical memories!! Thank you mommy for taking all of us! 🩵,” Khloé captioned photos from the night.

Kim Kardashian/Instagram Sia and North West perform on Christmas Eve 2022

During last year’s lavish annual family Christmas Eve party, North joined the Australian singer to perform her wintry track “Snowman” as the pair stood inside a life-sized gift box.

The proud mom of four shared videos on her Instagram Story of daughter North enjoying her time in the spotlight, singing next to Sia with a microphone in hand. While Sia dressed elegantly in a long, white tulle gown with a matching headpiece, North looked chic in a shimmering black ensemble.

“@Siamusic and North performing Snowman,” Kim captioned the video, while Khloé shared similar footage, writing, “We love you @siamusic.”

What is the kiddie tax?

When a kid receives income for doing nothing, they’re at risk of triggering the kiddie tax, which the child’s parent or guardian will then have to pay.

Under the kiddie tax, if a child is holding income-generating assets, and that income is above $2,500 for the year, their income is taxed at their parent or guardian’s marginal income tax rate. Investment or other unearned income in the form of capital gains, dividends and interest count.

The kiddie tax threshold is $2,500 in 2023 and $2,600 in 2024. In other words, in 2023, a parent or guardian would have to pay income taxes on their child’s investment income above $2,500 at their income tax rate, not their child’s (which is likely lower).

How does the kiddie tax work, and who does it apply to?

Unearned income could take the form of distributions from investments in a custodial account, custodial Roth IRA for kids, or ABLE account, for instance. People with investment income who are under the age of 18, or dependent students between the ages of 19 and 24, are taxed as follows for 2023:

  1. The first $1,250 of unearned income is tax free.

  2. The next $1,250 of unearned income is taxed at 10%, the lowest tax bracket for income tax filers.

  3. Any unearned income above $2,500 will be taxed at their parent’s marginal rate.

Don’t forget to use IRS Form 8615 to file any unearned income.

Why the kiddie tax? What’s the story?

The kiddie tax was first enacted as a part of the 1986 Tax Reform Act. The purpose of the kiddie tax is to make sure assets gifted to children above a certain threshold are taxed at their parent’s rate.

Imagine you bought a share of stock for $50 that’s now worth $100, and that you’ve held the share for more than a year. If you sell the share, you’ll be taxed at capital gains tax rates based on your income: 0%, 15%, or 20%. But if you give that stock to a child whose income is lower than yours, they could likely sell it at a lower capital gains rate than you. The kiddie tax is meant to prevent adults from realizing these lower capital gains by funneling investments through minors.

So, in this scenario, if the sale of that stock netted more than $2,500, the capital gains tax amount above that would be based on the parent’s income, not the child’s. The knock-on effect of this is that parents now must be aware of any unearned income in their dependents’ investment account, even if they’re not trying to pull one over on the IRS.

The bottom line

If you want to pass down generational wealth, talking to a tax professional may help you figure out the most tax efficient way to do so. The kiddie tax reminds us that receiving investments as a gift isn’t always free, especially if that investment’s realized gains or annual unearned income are over $2,500.
