To improve your credit score with a credit card, you need to know how to best use your credit card. Responsible credit card usage is key to boosting your credit—it won’t increase simply because you got a credit card. Here are the five best ways to increase your credit score using a credit card.
1. Pay bills on time
One of the most important parts of having a credit card is paying your credit card bill on time. Payment history is the largest factor in your FICO® score at 35%, which means it can make or break your score.
Get into the habit of paying your bills on time every month and watch your score grow. Setting up automatic payments for a few days before your bill is due can help make sure you never miss a payment and give a cushion of time for the payment to go through.
2. Keep your utilization rate low
Your credit utilization rate, or credit utilization ratio, is the amount of credit you’re using divided by the amount of credit available to you (your credit limit).
Let’s say your credit limit is $500. This is the maximum amount you can spend on your credit card before payments are denied, but that doesn’t mean you should spend that much.
It’s best for your credit score to keep your utilization rate under 30%—under 10% is even better! This is because the amount of money you owe impacts 30% of your FICO score and the lower this number is, the better. But how much can you actually spend with your credit card?
If your credit limit is $500, 30% of that is $150. So, you should aim to never have a balance over $150 on your credit card. Even better, shoot for a balance under $50 (10% of your limit).
3. Don’t overspend
You don’t need to carry a balance on your credit card to improve your credit score. Paying off your balance in full every time, not just making the minimum payment, is the best practice.
Carrying a balance can cost you more in credit card interest and late fees. Plus, it may increase your utilization rate and damage your credit score. Do your best to avoid credit card debt and treat your credit card like a debit card—only spending money you have.
4. Use your card regularly
Using your first credit card requires a delicate balance. You don’t want to spend too much and go over your utilization rate, but if you don’t use it regularly enough, the lender may close your account. Using some of your available credit is one of the best ways to boost your credit.
The solution is to use your card to make regular, small purchases. This could include purchases like:
Gas
Groceries
Small, recurring bills
Inexpensive meals
After a while of making these regular purchases and paying them off on time, your credit card provider will probably increase your credit limit, allowing you to spend more with your card. Until then, using your card for these types of purchases can help you establish responsible credit card habits and keep your credit utilization low.
5. Avoid opening more cards
Every time you apply for a new credit card, the creditor makes a hard inquiry on your credit, which drops your credit score a few points. You’ll be able to earn back those points in the long run, but in most cases, if you apply to a bunch of credit cards at once, those hard inquiries will add up and take a toll on your credit.
For this reason, you should only apply for one credit card at a time and make sure it’s a good match for you. When you’re first building your credit, it’s best to start small with one card and take your time to practice building credit with it before opening more accounts.

How to Build Credit without a Credit Card
If you’re not ready for a credit card or can’t get approved for one, here are some ways to build credit without a credit card.
Credit-builder loans
Credit-builder loans are a lot like what they sound like. They’re low-interest rate loans that help borrowers with poor or no credit build credit, and they function differently than your typical loan.
With a standard loan, you receive the money you’re borrowing upfront, but with a credit builder loan, the money is held in a savings or CD account until you pay it off. This makes it very low-risk for the lender, as your payments are also adding your collateral to the savings account.
You make monthly payments, including interest on the loan, and making these payments on time will help build your credit. Once you pay off the loan, you get all the money back and in some cases, interest if it was incurred while your savings collateral was being held.
Rent reporting
The three major credit bureaus, Equifax®, Experian® and TransUnion®, only include rent payment information on your credit report if they receive it. Most landlords don’t report this information, but it could benefit your score if you consistently pay your rent on time.
You can ask your landlord to report your rent payments or find a rent reporting service that will let you submit the information yourself. Ideally, your rent payments should be reported to all three bureaus for maximum impact.
Passbook loans
This type of loan is very similar to credit-builder loans, except it uses the money you already have in your savings or CD account as collateral. Interest rates for passbook or CD loans are typically lower than credit cards or personal loans.
Like credit-builder loans, you build credit as you make payments on the loan each month and can access the money once you’ve paid it off. Check that your bank will report your payments to all three credit bureaus before taking out this type of loan.

Net Price vs. Sticker Price
Every college and university, private or public, lists a sticker price, which is also known as the cost of attendance (COA). This price includes tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies, and miscellaneous expenses.
The net price, on the other hand, is what a student would actually pay, after factoring in any financial aid provided by the college and the federal government.
Financial aid is based on your family’s income, as well as the student’s academic achievement. Aid is offered in the form of grants, scholarships, work-study, and sometimes federal student loans. Schools offer aid based on financial need, a student’s “merit,” or a combination.
When you fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you will receive a Student Aid Index, or SAI. (Previously, this was called the Estimated Family Contribution, or EFC.) Colleges use this number to determine the amount of financial aid they award to accepted students. Typically, colleges come up with a financial aid package to help bridge the gap between the school’s sticker price and what your family can afford to pay.
Indeed, sometimes colleges with the highest sticker price end up costing less than a college with a much lower sticker price.

Using a Net Price Calculator
Fortunately, you can get an idea of what the net price will be for a particular college before you apply by using the government’s net price calculator. This tool can help students and their families get a better idea of the cost of college, after subtracting scholarships, grants, and other financial aid.
Keep in mind, though, that the net price calculator is going to require specific details about your income and assets, so the more transparent you are regarding your personal finances, the more precise your calculation is likely to be.
When is a Good Time to Start Saving for Your Child’s Education?
Generally, the sooner the better. In fact, it can be wise to set up and start making small monthly contributions to a college savings fund soon after your child is born.
For some familes, however, it may not be possible to start saving that early. It’s equally important to pay attention to your other expenses and family’s needs. For example, you may want to prioritize building an emergency and paying off expensive credit card debt over saving for college. It’s also a good idea to make sure you’re on track with retirement savings. At the end of the day, students are able to get loans for an education but it’s not possible to take out loans to fund retirement.
Some Options for Saving
529 Plan
A 529 education savings plan is an investment account that can be used to save for the beneficiary’s qualified education expenses. The funds can be used to pay for higher education or private elementary or high schools. A 529 plan allows your savings to grow tax-free, and some states even offer a tax deduction on your contributions.
All 529 plans are set up at the state level. However, you don’t have to be a resident of a particular state to enroll in its plan.
If your child decides not to go to school, it’s possible to roll the account over into the name of another family member. If the funds aren’t used for education-related expenses, there may be taxes and penalties.
Family members and friends can also contribute to a child’s college savings plan. They may choose to make deposits to an existing 529 account or set up one themselves, naming a beneficiary of their choice.
Some 529 savings plans offer an age-based investment option to automatically adjust the risk of the investment strategy as the beneficiary gets older. This type of investment approach might be similar to how a target date fund works in your retirement plan.
Regular Savings Accounts
You can also save for your child’s college tuition using a savings account at a traditional bank, credit union, or online bank. Just keep in mind that interest rates, even for high-yield savings accounts, tend to be relatively low. Plus, savings accounts don’t offer the tax advantages you can get with some other college savings vehicles.
It may be difficult to reach education financing goals through a traditional savings account alone since the interest rate might not keep pace with the inflation of college expenses.
Roth IRAs
Although generally used for retirement savings, a Roth IRA can be used to pay for the cost of college. Contributions to a Roth IRA are made with after-tax dollars but earnings grow tax-free.
Generally, to withdraw the earnings from an IRA without paying a penalty (or taxes), the account holder needs to be at least 59 ½ years old. However, if you made the first contribution to your Roth IRA at least five years before, you can also withdraw the growth penalty-free for qualified education expenses, including tuition, books, and supplies.
Keep in mind that, while there may not be an early withdrawal fee, the earnings withdrawn may still be subject to income tax.
Other Options to Pay for College
Sometimes saving alone isn’t enough to cover the cost of college. In that case, there are other funding options available that could help students and their families pay for college.
Private Scholarships
Scholarships are essential free money for college because you don’t have to pay them back. Scholarships are typically merit-based and are offered through a variety of organizations and institutions, including nonprofits, corporations, and even directly from universities and colleges. In some cases, scholarships are awarded on the basis of nationality, ethnicity, or economic need. There are a number of searchable databases that compile different scholarship opportunities.
Federal Financial Aid
When you complete the FAFSA each year, you will become eligible for federal financial aid. This can include scholarships, grants, work-study, and federal student loans (which may be subsidized or unsubsidized).
Private Student Loans
If savings and financial aid aren’t enough to cover the full cost of college, you can fill in gaps using private student loans. These are available through private lenders, including banks, credit unions, and online lenders.
Loan limits vary from lender to lender, but you can often get up to the total cost of attendance, which gives you more borrowing power than with the federal government. Interest rates vary depending on the lender. Generally, borrowers (or cosigners) who have strong credit qualify for the lowest rates.
Keep in mind, though, that private loans may not offer the borrower protections — like income-based repayment plans and deferment or forbearance — that automatically come with federal student loans.

Buyers facing high mortgage rates are pulling out of their home-purchase agreements at the highest rate in nearly a year.
Nearly 60,000 home-purchase agreements were canceled nationwide in August, equal to 15.7% of homes that went under contract that month, according to a new report from Redfin.
That rate is up from 14.3% in August 2022 and marks the highest percentage since October 2022, when mortgage rates surpassed 7% for the first time in two decades.
The average interest rate on a 30-year-fixed mortgage was 7.07% in August. Rates last month surged to 7.23%—the highest since 2001 – sending the typical homebuyer’s monthly payment up significantly from last year.
“I’ve seen more homebuyers cancel deals in the last six months than I’ve seen at any point during my 24 years of working in real estate. They’re getting cold feet,” said Jaime Moore, a Redfin Premier real estate agent in Reno, Nevada.
“Buyers get sticker shock when they see their high rate on paper alongside extra expenses for maintenance, repairs and closing costs. Many of them would rather back out, even if it means losing their earnest money. A lot of sellers are also willing to let buyers slip away because they don’t want to concede to repair requests,” Morre said.
Home prices not expected to fall
Home prices are high due to competition among buyers for limited inventory in the market.
The median U.S. home sale price rose 3% year over year to $420,846 in August, the largest annual increase since October 2022.
This price was 2.8% below the May 2022 record of $432,780, and is expected to remain elevated for the foreseeable future.
“The Federal Reserve still has more work to do in its battle against inflation, which means mortgage rates are unlikely to come down anytime soon. As long as rates remain high, homeowners will be reluctant to sell,” Chen Zhao, Redfin economics research lead, said, noting that a lack of homes for sale will keep prices high because it means buyers are competing for limited home supply.
Buyer demand Is below pre-pandemic levels, but no longer in freefall
Pending sales declined 0.6% on a seasonally-adjusted basis to 381,192 in August from the previous month. Compared from a year earlier, pending sales dropped 18.1%.
This figure has been hovering below 400,000 since the end of 2022, compared with nearly 500,000 just before the pandemic.
Pending sales have stabilized as the initial shock of elevated mortgage rates moves further into the rearview mirror, but high housing costs are still keeping many buyers on the sidelines, according to Redfin.
New Listings Tick Up Slightly, But Overall Housing Supply Remains at Record Low
New listings rose 0.8% to 474,239 in August on a seasonally-adjusted basis from July.
It’s the second small uptick on a seasonally-adjusted basis following nearly a year’s worth of declines. Year-over-year new listings were down 14.4%. Most homeowners who feel handcuffed by high rates have already made the decision not to sell, said Zhao.
“New listings have likely bottomed out,” she said. “Many of today’s sellers are putting their homes on the market because they have to, in some cases due to divorce, family emergencies or return-to-office policies.”
Still, the total number of homes for sale hit a record low of 1.3 million in August, falling 1.1% month over month on a seasonally adjusted basis and 20.8% year over year, the largest annual decline since June 2021.
Housing supply is at an all-time low because homeowners feel locked into their low mortgage rates. For many, selling their home and buying a new one would mean taking on a much higher monthly payment, Redfin said.
Most of the time, there’s not a lot of difference in what you get between New Zealand’s main banks.
Home loan rates are a good example. It doesn’t matter which bank you’re with – the rates you’ll get are the same, or near enough, across the board.
But actually, right now, that’s not the case.
Two of our big five banks have really stuck their necks out in the home loan market.
At one end, there’s ASB. After bumping its rates up twice in the last few weeks, ASB is now charging customers 7.45% on the popular one-year fixed term mortgage rate.
And meanwhile, at the other, there’s Kiwibank – charging 6.99% for the same term.
To put that range into context, the 0.46% difference between Kiwibank and ASB would cost you $2,300 more each year on a $500,000 mortgage. Not exactly chump change.
The rest of the pack (ANZ, BNZ and Westpac) are running somewhere in the middle, between 7.19% and 7.25%.
When ASB last hiked its home loan rates a couple of weeks ago, it took the unusual step of justifying the move.
It cited changes in the OCR, wholesale interest rates, customer term deposit rates and the cost of overseas funding – noting that all had increased significantly in the last two and a half years.
In reality, however, both the OCR and wholesale interest rates have remained flat since May, and the cost of overseas funding has actually fallen since the start of 2022. For example, the wholesale markets spread the Australian banks borrow at has fallen from about 0.60% during 2022 to 0.45% now (data sourced from Bloomberg), which is at odds with recent comments by some banks.
So why the difference in rates then? Well, in short, it all comes down to profit.
One bank is prepared to sacrifice market share to earn higher short-term profits. The other is prepared to forgo higher short-term profits to grow market share, and therefore ensure stronger profits in the longer term.
If anyone wanted proof of where ASB’s thinking is at, in my view you need look no further than recent comments made by Matt Comyn, CEO of Commonwealth Bank – ASB’s parent company in Australia. He caused a bit of a kerfuffle when he came out bemoaning the poor returns on mortgage lending in New Zealand right now.
To me, what’s so disingenuous about Comyn’s take on the issue is the fact that banks don’t just make their money on mortgages. Their profits are actually largely determined by the difference between the interest rate they pay to savers and the interest rate they charge borrowers.
So, let’s zoom out for a second, and look at that bigger picture with ASB.
The below graph uses Reserve Bank data to track the average rates ASB has paid, and charged, over the last five years – and therefore gives us an idea of the interest spread it’s making (the line in orange).
Over the last 12 months, ASB’s margin has been higher than at any other time in the last five years. Not a bad place to be when the rest of the country is in a cost-of-living crisis.
Where to from here?
I’ve got a sneaking suspicion we could see ASB lower its home loan interest rates soon, at least to a level that’s back in line with the other Australian-owned banks. Its market share is being hit hard and the short-term profit from higher margins will be at the expense of longer-term profits.
For Kiwi who have a mortgage with ASB rolling over soon – or anyone considering a mortgage with ASB – it would be wise to shop around or ask them to match the best deal you can find.
Chances are good you could get a cheaper rate, and potentially a cashback of up to 1% if you change banks. Even on a $500,000 mortgage, that could leave you thousands better off.

Some of their eligibility requirements include being over the age of 18, being a resident of the U.S., having a valid driver’s license, being at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level, and having a genuine need for a vehicle.

Vehicles for Change was started in 1999 and has given out over 7,500 cars to low-income families for little to no cost.

Before we begin, I want to talk about the basics on income-generating assets, in case you are new to the subject or if you want a background first.
Income-generating assets are investments that, as the name suggests, generate income for you. These are assets that provide you with a steady cash flow, allowing you to earn passive income and build your wealth over time.
Examples include rental real estate and dividend-paying stocks (we will go over 17 different types of income-generating assets below in more detail).
There are several benefits of the best income-generating assets such as:
Passive income: You earn money without actively working, and this can provide financial freedom and the ability to focus on other things in life. You can earn money in your sleep, while on vacation, making dinner, and more.
Diversification: You can diversify your investments so that all of your income is not coming from just one source.

There are many types of income-generating assets. Some may be more traditional such as dividend-paying stocks, and others may be more alternative income-generating assets, such as selling stock photos, and even renting out your driveway.
Today, I will talk about 17 different types of income-generating assets, but this is not a full list of the best income-producing assets. There are many, many more!
The different types of income-generating assets that I will talk about today include:
1. Dividend-paying stocks
One of the best assets to invest in are dividend-paying stocks.
Dividends are simply a payment in cash or stock that public companies distribute to their shareholders.
The amount of a dividend is determined by a company’s board of directors, and they are given as a way to reward those who have stock in their company. Both private and public companies pay dividends, but not all companies pay dividends.
How do dividends work? If you own shares of a dividend-paying stock, then a dividend is paid per share of that stock. So, if you have 10 shares in Company ABC, and they pay $5 in cash dividends each year, then you will get $50 in dividends that year. While dividends can be paid on a monthly, quarterly, or yearly basis, they are most commonly paid out quarterly — so, four times a year. In this example, the $5 in cash dividends the company pays each year will most likely be distributed as $1.25 per quarter for each share of stock.
The most common type of dividends are cash dividends. Shareholders may choose to get this deposited right into their brokerage account. Stock dividends are another common type of dividend. In this case, shareholders get extra shares of stock instead of cash.
Both cash dividends and stock dividends are great income-generating assets that will earn more money for you.
As a shareholder, you can earn income when companies distribute profits to their shareholders. Look for stocks with a history of consistent dividend payouts and a high dividend yield. Keep in mind that dividend stocks are still subject to market fluctuations, and just because a company has paid a dividend in the past does not mean that they always will in the future.

High-yield savings accounts and CDs are a great way to grow your savings, but most people have their money in accounts with low rates. Unfortunately, that means many of you are losing out on some easy money.
Savings accounts at brick-and-mortar banks are known for having really low interest rates. That’s because they have a much higher overhead — paying for the building, paying the tellers to help you in person at the bank, etc.

Remember that access to your money is limited during the term of the CD. You will agree upon the term before putting your money in the CD. The terms typically vary in length from around 3 months to 5 years.
Money market accounts are also offered by banks and often with a higher yield than other types of savings accounts.
3. Real estate
Real estate is one of the most common income-generating assets that people think of.
Investing in rental properties is a popular way to generate steady cash flow. You can earn rental income from tenants, and properties typically appreciate in value over time.
Location and property management are important factors that can impact your return on investment.
By investing in real estate, you may be investing in residential properties, commercial real estate, short-term rentals, REITs, and more.

4. Real estate investment trusts (REITs)
An REIT is a company that owns and manages income-producing real estate. They then sell shares to investors like stock.
By investing in REITs, you can make money in the real estate market without actually owning real estate.
So, if you don’t want to be a landlord, then this may be something for you to look into. This makes it much more passive than actually owning real estate and having to manage it.
You can even diversify your income stream with REITs by investing in different property types, such as residential homes, commercial office space, industrial, and retail store properties.
5. Bonds
Bonds are fixed-income investments that are issued by governments and companies. If you own a bond, you receive interest payments from borrowers on a regular basis.
An easy way to explain this is: When you buy a bond, you are giving someone a loan and they are agreeing to pay you back with interest.
Bonds with higher credit ratings are generally a safer investment but may offer lower interest rates.
6. Mutual funds
Mutual funds gather funds from investors to invest in stocks, bonds, or other securities. Basically, the funds are pooled together and there’s a fund manager who chooses the best investments.

Mutual funds typically have higher fees because they have fund managers who are actively trying to beat the market.
With a mutual fund, you get diversification because the fund manager mixes the assets in it.

ETFs and index funds are popular options for those who are looking to diversify their portfolio of income-generating assets.
This is because index funds and ETFs track a specific market index and invest in a wide range of stocks or other assets, instead of picking and choosing stocks in an attempt to beat the market. This is what makes them different from mutual funds.
They often have lower fees and higher diversification compared to actively managed funds.
8. Annuities
Annuities are long-term investments offered by insurance companies that give you a guaranteed income stream to build wealth. In exchange for a lump-sum payment or periodic contributions (such as monthly or annually), you’ll receive steady payments in the future.
The way it works is you pay premiums into the annuity for a set amount of time. Later, you stop paying premiums, and the annuity starts sending regular payments to you. Some are even set up to pay you back with a lump sum.
Annuities can be fixed or variable. A fixed annuity offers a guaranteed payment amount — which means a predictable income for you. As for a variable annuity, the payment amount does vary, depending on how the market is doing.

Starting a website can generate income through the money-making assets of advertising, affiliate marketing, or the sale of products and services.

On Good Morning America today, self-made real estate millionaire and Shark Tank star, Barbara Corcoran, shared her thoughts on the U.S. housing market and answered a few questions from viewers. And of course, the first question that came from ABC’s Robin Roberts: Why are mortgage rates so high?
“It’s the only tool the federal government has for controlling inflation and getting hold of our economy, and they’ve wanted to slow it down, and it’s worked. A year ago, it was 9%, that was our inflation rate, now it’s down to 3%, and they’re going to hold firm until it gets exactly where they’ve targeted,” Corcoran answered. And that magic number for the Federal Reserve is 2%.
The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate reached 7.49%, as of the latest reading per Mortgage News Daily’s rate index. In the 52-week range, that’s the high (and it’s much higher than the low of 5.72%). It’s also a 22-year high, signaling that the era of 3% rates are long gone. But, Corcoran says, they’ll come back down, without specifying what they’ll come down to or when that’ll be—she only hinted that mortgage rates will come down enough to bring would-be buyers back to the market. Still, she said, the effect of record-high mortgage rates on the housing market isn’t necessarily what you’d expect.
“The housing market is surprisingly strong; everybody’s surprised by it,” Corcoran said. “Houses are not staying on the market. They all sell. One-third of them sell for over-ask price, and there are just not enough houses to go around, so as a result of that, the housing market is as strong as ever—and it’s so frustrating for buyers.”
And she’s right; there aren’t enough houses to go around. There’s a shortage of homes across the country, and what’s happening with mortgage rates has only tightened new supply further because of the so-called lock-in effect. Borrowers with a below-market mortgage rate are much less likely to sell their homes (and buy something new) because their monthly mortgage payments are almost guaranteed to be much higher, with rates hovering above 7%. That’s one less seller and buyer, which constrains both sides of the market. After giving a brief rundown on the housing market, Corcoran pivoted to answering viewers’ questions. The first asked if housing would be more affordable in future, given that it’s hard to find a home that’s not overpriced at this time.
“There’s not a lot out there,” Corcoran said, adding that everyone is having a hard time right now: “But I can tell you this, house prices are not going to come down.”
When mortgage rates come down, Corcoran nearly said, all hell would break loose, before she realized she might not be able to say that on TV. Buyers waiting on the sidelines will jump into the market, “and houses are going to go up in price all over again,” she added. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they go up by as much as 10% or 15% when that happens.”
It’s not the first time she’s said as much. Corcoran, again on Good Morning America, previously noted that home prices are going to “explode” the minute mortgage rates come down, as would-be buyers rush back into the market. So her advice for people looking to buy a home in the current market is to adjust their expectations, which, she noted, isn’t easy, especially when you know your neighbor bought their house at a lower price and lower mortgage rate. But Corcoran also explained that buyers should shop around for their mortgage rate, which can help. When answering another viewer’s question, Corcoran said it’s a good time to consider an adjustable rate mortgage, (which is simply a home loan with an interest rate that adjusts over time based on the market). Her advice, however, for people that have adjustable rate mortgages that are about to reset was a bit more blunt.
“Well, you really only have two choices: You either pay the bank or you get out of town,” Corcoran said, eliciting laughter.
Lastly, Corcoran was asked about any tips she can give to those thinking about selling their home. And while she said sellers have it easy, Corcoran did suggest that they hold off, at least for now.
“You really don’t need any help,” Corcoran said. “Everything is selling today…But if it was my house, I would wait until next year when all the buyers come off the sidelines when interest rates come [down]. I’m going to get a lot more for my house than I would get right now. So they have no problems. Nobody’s feeling bad for the sellers.”
While national house prices have held firm over the past year—only falling 1% between May 2022 and May 2023 according to the Case-Shiller National Home Price Index—home prices in some overheated markets like Austin are down over 10%. Then again, some Midwestern and Northeastern markets are up over 8% during the same time period.

You know that knowledge is power, and understanding how to get credit and how it all works can make a big difference. Here are a few basics.
Your Credit Score
There are multiple scoring models, but they all work to provide a numerical score that tells lenders how likely you are to pay back your debts. Higher credit scores are more attractive to lenders and creditors. Five main factors influence your score:
Your Credit Report
Your credit reports are maintained by three major credit bureaus—Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. They contain data on your current and past debts, payment history, residential history, and other information about your credit history. This data is supplied by lenders, creditors, and businesses where you have accounts. The information on these reports is fed into the credit scoring models to determine your credit score.
Here’s where it starts getting complex. The information on those reports isn’t always the same. Some businesses and lenders only report to one or two of the credit bureaus. Some don’t report to any.
So, your credit report can be a little different with each of the bureaus. That means your credit score can also vary depending on which report and scoring model is being used.
2. Monitor Your Credit Score and Reports
Once you understand some basics about credit, you should take a look at your own credit reports. Monitoring your credit is one of the best ways to learn what will positively or negatively impact your scores. It also helps you catch inaccuracies or signs of identity theft sooner. Is there an account on your report that’s not yours? It could be bringing your score down even before you learn how to start building credit! If you find inaccurate negative information on your credit report, you can challenge it.
There are a few ways to check your credit reports.
AnnualCreditReport: You can request one report per year from each of the three bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com. The bureaus are allowing you to request your reports weekly due to the effects of coronavirus through April 2022.
Credit Report Card: You can also get information about your credit reports via the free Credit Report Card at Credit.com. This is a breakdown of how you’re doing with each of the five major factors that impact your credit score. Your personal Credit Report Card can help you understand where you might need to work to positively impact your credit.

If a friend or family member has a credit card and is an account holder in good standing—meaning they pay their bills on time—ask if they’ll add you as an authorized user. Make sure that their credit card company reports to the credit bureaus for authorized users first or this is a pointless exercise.
You don’t even need a card or to use their account. If the credit card company reports on authorized users, you’ll get their on-time payments posted to your credit reports if your friend or family member makes them.
If you’re looking for how to start building credit at 18, this can be a quick method. However, it does come with some potential risk. If that person doesn’t pay on time or runs up their credit card balance, your credit score could suffer from the negative reports too.
5. Get a Starter Credit Card
For those who want to know how to start credit building without someone else, a secured credit card might be a good place to start. Some credit card companies also offer unsecured credit cards for those with no credit. These tend to have low credit limits and may have high interest rates.
If you can’t find an unsecured credit card, though, a secured card is much easier to get in general. You have to secure it with a deposit—typically in the amount of the credit limit. For example, if you put down a $250 security deposit, your initial credit limit is $250.
You build credit by using the card and paying the bill on time each month. Make sure you opt for a credit card that reports to all three of the bureaus to maximize the benefits to your credit history. Usually after a certain number of timely payments, you get your security deposit back and may even be eligible for an increase in credit limit.

6. Apply for a Credit Builder Loan
Remember that credit mix is important to your credit score. That means you can’t just have one type of credit—such as a credit card—for maximum impact. You may also want an installment loan on your account.
A credit builder loan is one way to get an installment account on your credit history. These work like a traditional loan in reverse: if you’re approved, your funds get placed in a secured certificate of deposit and are given to you after you’ve paid off the loan.

7. Understand How Student Loans Can Help Your Credit
If you have a student loan in your name, you may already have an installment loan on your credit history. This is true whether your parents acted as guarantors or cosigners or not, but it’s not true if your parent simply took the loan out for you. As with any type of debt, student loans can help you start building credit if you pay them on time. So make sure you keep up with your loan status. Make sure your lender doesn’t report you as paying late when you’re within an agreed-upon deferment period.
8. Don’t Try to Overdo It
Building credit is a marathon, not a 100-yard dash. While some actions can positively impact your credit quickly, as a young person you’re unlikely to have a super robust credit history in just a few months.
Take your time and don’t try to engage in every credit-building tactic at once. You certainly don’t want to max out your debt in an effort to build credit. That could leave you unable to make your payments, which tanks your credit score before you have time to really build it.
9. Make a Budget and Stick to It
Finally, make a budget and stick to it. Spend what you can afford, and don’t take on debts you can’t pay fairly easily. You have years to continue building your credit, and a history of smart decisions and timely payments is one of the best things for your score long-term.

Typically, you can’t write checks from a savings account. Of course, it’s always possible to transfer money from a savings account to a checking account and then write a check from there.
If you want to save money and have the ability to write a check with the money you save, you may want to consider opening up a money market account.
Money market accounts are a type of savings account that often pay a higher interest rate than traditional savings accounts and generally include check-writing and debit card privileges.

It can be a good idea to find out what your bank’s policy is regarding monthly transactions from savings. Many institutions are sticking with the standard limit of six “convenient transactions” per month, while some are allowing more, such as nine transactions per month.
