Grandma probably doesn’t want another scented candle, but she could very well use a ride to the store. Your underemployed nephew would likely prefer a little help filling the pantry instead of a jokey T-shirt. And the sister who’s staying home with her kids may not be able to afford any extras just now. Instead of dropping $40 on a sweater, why not put that money toward a membership to the local museum?
You’ve still got a few weeks to think about Christmas gifts. Make this the year when you pick presents that actually help.
Giving gifts that help
I’ve put together a list of items that save the recipient money or fill a specific need. Prices range from as little as $5 to upwards of $50 or more — and some of the suggestions will cost you little except time.
Warehouse club membership
If you’ve got $40 or $50 to spend, why not make it possible to buy in bulk all year long? Note that this gift isn’t suitable for folks who don’t buy much at a time or who have limited storage space — unless you offer to split some big buys with them. Frugal hack: If you’ve got a membership already then make up a gift certificate that says, “I will take you shopping once a month for 12 months.”
Greeting cards
Some of us dinosaurs still like to send snail-mail birthday, get-well or “thinking of you” cards. You can get decent ones two for a buck at some dollar stores. I got an even better deal on Hallmark assortments at Walgreens: 10 cards to a box, two boxes for $5, or a quarter apiece. Ideally, you’ll spring for at least a 10-pack of stamps along with this gift. Frugal hack: Shop thrift stores and rummage or yard sales — a lot of really nice card sets end up deeply discounted in both places.
Annual pass
A season’s membership to a local zoo, museum or theater company may cost less than you think. You’re not only giving someone a year’s worth of entertainment, you’re investing in community organizations. Frugal hacks: Social commerce sites like Groupon or Buy With Me sometimes offer annual passes; sign up for a few of these services right away and see what pops up in the next few weeks. Be sure to buy the social commerce vouchers through a cash-back site for a 6% rebate.
Pet supplies
People who have recently lost their jobs or who are living on fixed incomes could be hard-pressed to provide for Fluffy or Fido. Find out what kind of kibble the animal eats and drop off a jumbo sack of the stuff, or one of those huge buckets of kitty litter. Possible frugal hacks: Watch for loss leaders at places like Petco and PetSmart, and pay with a discounted gift card.
Yard work
Aging or chronically ill relatives might not be up to mowing, weeding, shoveling snow or cleaning out the gutters. Give a homemade gift certificate good for a certain number of hours of work each season.
Supermarket or drugstore gift card
Your giftee can shop the best sales or treat himself to an item that’s normally out of his price range. Since some supermarkets sell gasoline, that card might come in real handy during a particularly tight week — you can’t get paid if you can’t get to work, right? Frugal hacks: Some drugstores give free gift cards if you fill or transfer a prescription. Some rewards programs and rewards credit cards offer them. Discounted gift cards for merchants like Shell, Exxon, Walgreens, Jewel-Osco, Safeway and Albertsons are often available for about 3% off; see above link for how to buy them.
The Entertainment Book
It’s got discounts for food, movies, cultural attractions, sporting goods and all kinds of services. Frugal hack: Buy it through a cash-back site and you’ll get a rebate of up to 35% plus free shipping.
Transit pass
For those of us who don’t own cars, the prospect of a month’s worth of public transit sounds mighty fine. Or how about paying for a year’s membership in a car-sharing service? Frugal hack: If you’ve got a car, make your gift “I will take you to do one errand a week (with advance notice) for the next year.”
Community-supported agriculture
If money is no object, buy that special someone a CSA share. He’ll eat fresh produce from late spring until early fall, and you’ll be helping a local farmer stay in business. Go to this U.S. Department of Agriculture site and scroll down to “Find a CSA farm.”
Prepaid calling card
Not everyone has unlimited minutes on his cell phone, or a cell phone at all for that matter. The card lets the recipient talk with relatives and friends without worrying about the phone bill. Frugal hack: If you’ve got unlimited minutes on your cell, arrange to let your relative or friend use it once or twice a month.
Socks and underwear
Yes, you are turning into your mother. But these are the kinds of things we all need to replace. So if you know the person well enough to know his or her needs (and size!), then watch the clearance tables or use a price-comparison website to find the best deals. If this is a family with young kids, buy a size or two up.
Green ’em up
Make your gift a bunch of compact fluorescents, faucet aerators and low-flower showerheads to reduce the giftee’s utility bills. Offer installation if necessary. If you’ve got money to burn consider installing a water-saving toilet, too. Frugal hacks: Pay with a discounted gift card from Lowe’s or Home Depot, or buy through a cash-back site, specifying “local pickup” (i.e., order online but go get it yourself) if free delivery isn’t offered.
Car care
Buy a case of motor oil and filters and offer to do the changing if they’re unable and you’re handy. Or spring for a set of replacement wiper blades, some new floor mats and a gallon or two of windshield washer fluid. Frugal hack: Watch auto-supply store ads for sales and rebates.
Medicine cabinet
Buy that special someone any or all of the following: a year’s worth of vitamins and supplements; cold or allergy medicines, nighttime cough syrup, lip balm, throat lozenges and those tissues with the lotion in them; analgesics, antibacterial ointment, bandages and the like. Frugal hack: Many of these items can be obtained cheaply or free after rebate.
All right, dear readers, it’s your turn: What suggestions do you have for gifts that help?
When you have a need or a problem, there’s usually a solution that can be bought. Buying a solution is often the easiest and fastest way to solve a problem — but it also can be the most expensive.
When my husband and I were in debt-repayment mode and had our discretionary spending locked down, I began to see that there are alternative solutions to problems that I once thought could only be solved by buying something. Sometimes quality counts, but more often than not, I would choose a solution that required spending more than necessary, when some forethought might have yielded a solution that was less expensive (or even free). Or maybe if I had stopped to think about it, I’d have realized it wasn’t a critical problem, and I could just choose to do nothing about it.
We set a strict budget while we were paying off our debt, so it was necessary to think about alternatives before every purchase to meet our payment goals. The great thing is that it became ingrained in me, and it’s something I continue to try to do. Here are some of the techniques I use.
Repair what you can Repair what you have instead of replacing it. You can do this with clothes, appliances, furniture, and cars. I know someone who used throw away a shirt when it was missing a button rather than paying to have it mended, or learning how to sew on a button himself.
But even if you’re not apt to go the do-it-yourself route, sometimes paying for a repair is worth it when it’s something that is expensive or difficult to replace. Last year I took my boots to a shoe doctor for the first time. I was ready to replace them, but I thought I’d try a repair shop first, and I was pleasantly surprised. The boots were re-heeled, the leather was conditioned, and they looked good-as-new. It would have been much more costly to replace them.
Delay spending Put off the purchase. People do this if they lose their jobs or if they live paycheck-to-paycheck and run out of money at the end of the month. I do it as a game when the credit card closing date is coming up, just to keep the number as low as possible.
Simply shelf the issue for the time being. Give it a week or two. (Or 30 days.) You might even think of a better solution during that period.
You also can do this with regular services. See how long you can stretch out time in between haircuts, for example, especially if your cut is low-maintenance to start. Stretching it out just four more weeks in between appointments reduced what I spend in a year by one-third. And you know, so far my hair is just fine.
Rent, trade, borrow, or take Can you borrow or trade for a solution? If you want a book or a DVD, try out a service like Book Mooch or Swaptree. Try renting tools if you won’t use them enough to warrant owning them. See if friends or family members will let you borrow a tool or appliance (just be sure to send a lovely thank-you note).
Also, don’t forget to check out sites like Freecycle for furniture, appliances, toys, and more. Items are given away for free; you just pay for the gas to pick up your stuff.
Plan ahead Many times we overspend because we’re pressed for time. Maybe you have to get a last-minute Christmas gift for a picky relative. The mall is typically where we end up in that kind of situation, and it’s not likely that you’ll find the perfect gift at a killer price when you’re in a hurry.
Planning ahead gives you the time to find the perfect gift at a great price, or maybe even free if you’re really creative.
Planning ahead isn’t limited to gifts. You can plan ahead for travel, social events, house guests, and more. You can plan your expenditures for any situation that you know about ahead of time.
Find creative solutions to achieve your goal There’s usually more than one way to solve a problem or reach a goal. Craving Chinese take-out? Try making stir-fry at home. Want to have a fun Saturday night with your friends? Throw a potluck or host a game night instead of meeting at a restaurant. Bored and feeling the urge to shop? Try reading a book, going for a walk, or doing something creative.
I’ve found the most inspiration from fellow bloggers:
Instead of completely redecorating a room, try a bit of wallpaper and a fresh coat of paint.
Rather than buying new furniture, consider how a few yards of fabric might breathe new life into the furniture you already own.
Hate the fit of a dress, but love the fabric? Consider a refashion.
Overwhelmed by the expense of baby gear? Find frugal ways to make it yourself.
A quick Google search usually provides new solutions I might not have thought of on my own.
Do nothing Just ignore the need and try to do without. A lot of times if you simply do nothing, you find it’s not as bad as you thought. The best personal example of this was our decision to do nothing about replacing our second car. We also do this when we’re swept off our feet by fancy kitchen gear, and then realize that our cast iron Dutch oven may not be as gorgeous as a porcelain enamel Le Creuset, but it gets the job done.
Make a habit out of questioning your purchases, and try a quick Internet search to see if there’s a less expensive solution out there.
What about you? What have you done lately to improvise, get by with what you have, or find a cheap solution, instead of buying something new? Share your tips!

Best Money Hacks
Money hacks are ways to build long-term wealth.
Even though most of the hacks for money include quick saving wins, over the long term, you will actually start a snowball effect of more money in your bank account.
Sometimes, it can be difficult to find the motivation to save money, but these 7 best real money hacks will help you reset your financial mindset and start saving!
The best money hacks are the overarching big picture concepts that you must master for long-term success.
1. Think Big
Open up your mind.
One way to reset your financial mindset is by opening yourself up to new ways of thinking about spending and saving.
Too often, we are focused on what is directly in front of us instead of thinking about the big picture.
A great way to think big with your finances is to decide how you want to live life with intention.
2. Habit of Saving Money
Get back in the habit of saving.
If you have been beyond your means or barely scraping by, the best way to get back on track is by saving at least 20% of your income.
This may seem a little ludicrous. However, by prioritizing saving first, you will be pleasantly surprised how well you live off the rest.
In this post, there will be so many simple and easy ways to start saving today.
3. Make a Plan for Your Money
Create a spending plan (aka that dreaded word budget).
Creating an outline for what you want and need will help you to make smarter decisions about your spending.
This concept has been made too difficult over the years.
The bottom line is you want to spend less than you make. So, make a plan for that to happen today.
4. Make Money on the Side
This one is huge!
Personally, making extra money has been a priority for the last 5 years. We spent many years trying to cut our expenses and hating our inability to actually spend less as a growing family. So, we changed our focus to finding ways to make more money instead.
Start a side hustle. If you are not making enough to live comfortably, start a side hustle! Use your unique skill set to make extra cash.
Pick up a second job or ask for more hours.
There are plenty of ways to make money fast.
5. Invest in Stock Market
This means a way to make money or increase your net worth. AKA make your money work for you.
Too many times, the concept of investing is big and scary. The thought of starting is way too overwhelming. So you put it off until next week or next month. Then, a couple of years go by and you have not invested your money.
That is the biggest financial mistake you can make.
Start small by investing in an index fund. Each month consistently add more money.
If you want to learn to trade stocks, then you must enroll in the best investing course I have found.

6. Pay Off Debt
Ugh… debt is the cash flow killer.
You are unable to make forward progress if you are straddled by debt.
Figure out how to pay off debt ASAP.
When calculating how long it will take to pay off high-interest debt, you should consider paying the highest interest rate first. Here is the best debt payoff app available.
7. Watch Your Spending
Be mindful of your spending.
This is a great practice that many people need to start doing again, regardless of how much money or how little money they have.
Every few months, you need to evaluate your spending to see if it matches up with your values.
As you can imagine there are many money hacks that can help you save, but the list above is the money hacks that will make the biggest difference the quickest. Below we have many more money hacks for you to explore.
Hacks for Saving Money
Money app hacks are small, quick, and easy ways to improve your finances.
They can range from things like automating your budget or creating a money jar that pays for itself, to more complex solutions like changing your tax withholding or moving money around to get a higher return.
Honestly, there are so many life hacks for saving money.
8. Automatic Savings
This is a practice of automatically transferring money from your checking account into your savings account on a regular basis.
It is best to set a transfer amount and stick to it.
Since it is easier to save your money before you spend it, you must save as much money as possible in order for this strategy to be effective.
9. Financial goals
A financial goal is a long-term, quantifiable expectation for how much money you want to have, or what you plan on doing with your money. Your goals can be as simple as saving for the down payment on a house or as involved as saving for retirement.
Our financial goals allow us to set specific, numerical targets that help us achieve our desired lifestyle in a more concrete way.
You must set smart financial goals.
10. What brings you joy?
At the end of the day, it is important to remember that life is all about finding what brings you joy.
The question is open-ended, but your money must line up with what brings you joy.
Spend a few minutes and stew on the question.
11. Build an emergency savings fund
Building an emergency savings fund is a great idea if you are in the habit of saving money and want to make sure that you have some money saved up when times get rough.
If you are struggling to save, there are a few ways you can increase your savings.
For example, you might be able to set up automatic transfers from your checking account into an investment account. You should also make sure that you have a way to save money outside of your checking account.
Saving cash in a jar or saving up coins are ideas for some people.
12. Invest spare change
If you go shopping and buy something, most stores will give you change. If you use a debit or credit card, you can do the same thing with help of a popular app!
Simple money hack: investing your spare change.
In order to invest your spare change in an account, you can open one for as little as $5. Acorns then automatically invest the money from your checking account and into a savings acorn account.
As the round-up feature continues to add upon each purchase, it is a good idea to invest in this app so that you can save more dollars!
13. Challenge Yourself to Save
If you are looking to save money, it is best to set up a budget that includes challenging yourself.
A great way to do this is with the no spend challenge.
A no-buy is when you decide to simply not make any purchases for a certain amount of time.
A no-spend is when someone decides to not spend any money in a certain period of time.
When you are struggling with spending too much money and want to reset your wallet, then give up spending money. Period.
14. Join a buy nothing group
The buy nothing groups are a growing movement that started in order to help people cut their ecological footprint, save money, and break free of consumerism.
This is a great way to find things you need as well as declutter your house.
15. Negotiate everything
The key to successful negotiation is preparation.
Research the company’s past sales, price changes, and discounts offered in order to get a better understanding of what you’re negotiating for.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate.
What is the worst thing that can happen when someone says no!?!
16. Refinance Your Mortgage
It is never too late to refinance your mortgage.
In fact, it might be a good idea if you’re in the market for a new home or refinancing your loan on an existing property.
You must weigh the costs of refinancing to how much you will save over the time period of the loan.
Ask around for mortgage broker recommendations and get at least two quotes.
17. Downsize your Home
Downsize your home is the term for reducing a residence in size. This can be done by either moving to an apartment or buying a smaller house. There are many benefits of downsizing, including living a more affordable lifestyle and having less upkeep.
Downsizers use their homes as investments and save money on rent or mortgage payments.
18. Cut the cord
With the internet becoming accessible to everyone, people have started cutting their cable and watching shows online. People can save up to $500 a year by cutting cable from their bills.
Cut the cable & stop watching TV!
19. Learn about Finances
Ask for help.
If you are struggling, there is no shame in asking for assistance from your friends or family members.
The goal is to get ahead with money and not keep digging further into a hole.
Check out any of our courses to help you.
20. Save for What You Want
Decide what you want most and work towards it with the money you have now, instead of waiting for a windfall or a large inheritance.
This may mean setting aside $200 a month.
For example, as a reminder of your long-term goal of buying a beach property, you may buy something you would hang in the new place. Every time you see it, you will be reminded of what you are saving towards.
Budget Hacks
Financial hacks are not unusual.
Since it is so easy to overspend, you must know a few budgeting hacks ahead of time.
21. Need vs Want
A want is a desire for something, while a need is something that fulfills the requirement of your body like food or shelter.
When you think about buying something, ask yourself if it is a want or a need.
By uncovering needs vs wants, you are quickly able to find ways to spend less and save more.
22. Avoid Temptation
To avoid temptation, it is important to maintain a healthy amount of physical and emotional distance from the things that tempt you.
Sometimes, spending triggers are easy to avoid but other times they’re not.
However, people should always be aware of their temptations and try to stay away from them because it will lead to unnecessary debt or stress in the long run.
23. Practice the 30-day rule
Many people wonder what’s the 30 day rule with money…
The 30-day rule is the principle that states that you should practice a new habit or stop an old habit for at least thirty days before expecting success.
When it comes to your money, it means to wait thirty days before making big purchases or changes.
24. Keep a Budget Binder
A budget binder is an important tool that helps people keep track of their finances.
The binder can help people plan out their finances by providing a place to record expenses and income.
Keeping a budget binder is an effective way to track your spending and keep yourself accountable.
By keeping it, you can easily plan for future expenses in advance as well as see what money could be saved or spent on different items over time.
25. Get a spend tracker and use it regularly
Track your spending for 30 days. It can be a good idea to track your spending for at least a month to get an idea of what you’re spending and where.
A spending tracker is a tool that helps people keep track of how much they are spending on a certain item. It is important to use this tool regularly in order to be able to see patterns in your spending.
Then, review your spending. Share it with a trusted friend or family member to come up with some goals to reduce expenses in order to save money.
26. Create a budget
Create a budget, and follow it.
When you schedule your spending, make sure to leave room for savings. This is the easiest way to ensure that you can stick to your budget.
Find more budgeting resources on our site.
27. Pay Bills on Time
This should be a simple statement that we all know. However, life can throw curveballs.
Try to pay your bills on time and in full every month, and make sure all of your bills are paid each month.
This will show lenders that you are responsible and that you are taking care of your credit. Plus you don’t rack up those pesky late fees and high interest rates.
28. Avoid Missed Payments
Don’t miss any payments, and pay off your balances each month to avoid paying high interest rates or fees on late or missed payments.
Read again… do not miss paying your bills.
29. Reconcile Your Checking Account

30. Avoid Summer Budget Busters
Avoid spending money for the summer by just being conscious of your spending and reviewing what is different than the norm.
It is too easy to get into the trap of spending money because the weather is warm.
31. Review your Credit Card Statements
If you’re like most people, you probably review your credit card statements once every six months.
What’s the best way to go about reviewing them?
It depends on how often you use your credit card, how much debt you have, and what your credit score is. You should review your statements at least once a year if you’re carrying a balance on your credit cards.
If you use your credit card, then you should review your statements at least monthly.

Foreign websites are websites that have been created by people from other countries, and they sell products in the language of their country. These websites often offer lower prices on products than what is offered in the United States.
If you’re traveling abroad and need to find a place to stay, there are plenty of websites that can help. A few websites have deals on places where travelers often stay while they travel internationally.
50. Stay for free or get paid to house sit abroad
A house sitter is someone who looks after someone’s property for a certain amount of time in exchange for the promise of payment.
House sitting is typically offered by homeowners to travelers and others who are looking to stay in a particular location for an extended period of time.
The main types of house sitting include:
– full-time house sitters, who are responsible for all aspects of the house and who are typically paid a monthly salary,
– part-time house sitters, who may be responsible for taking care of one or more specific tasks such as gardening or handling the mail
51. Hide your search
To avoid being taken advantage of by airlines, it is best to open a new incognito or private window between searches.
This will make sure that you are not tricked into buying tickets that may be significantly more expensive than they need to be.
Airlines use cookies in your browser to make you believe the prices are going up and up.

“Wanna see something neat?” Kris asked the other night. She was holding the year-end statement from her work-based retirement plan.
“Sure,” I said. “Show me the money.”
She handed the statement to me. “Look at my account balance,” she said. “Look how it’s grown. It went down a little bit in 2008, but because I kept contributing, the balance has gone crazy during the last two years.”
Kris’s retirement account took a hit in 2008, but rebounded in 2009 and 2010.
“How do you earn such great returns?” I asked. “I’ll bet readers at Get Rich Slowly would love to hear.”
“Well, it’s not just investment returns,” Kris said. “A lot of that growth is because I save so much. I max out the allowable contribution in this account. I started by contributing 8% of my gross [pre-tax] pay. When I got my raise the next year, I bumped that to something like 10%. Then 12% with the next raise. And so on.”
“What percentage do you contribute now?” I asked.
“I’m not sure,” she said. “Last year, I did the max, which is $16,500 a year. I’d contribute more, if they’d let me, but they don’t, so I just invest it elsewhere. Like my Roth IRA and my mutual funds.” (All of Kris’s investments are in mutual funds, but she calls one particular account her “mutual funds”.)
Kris smiled. “Pretty cool, huh?” she said. Yes. Yes, it is. Pretty cool, my savvy wife.
There are a number of great lessons here — including the wisdom of sticking with an investment plan even during a down market — but one in particular stands out. Kris’ experience highlights the most important piece of the retirement savings puzzle: The number-one factor in determining how much you’ll have at retirement is the amount you save. Please re-read that sentence, because it’s not really as obvious as it may sound.
The economy, your choice of funds, your tax bracket — all of these play a role in your final retirement balance, but none of them is as important as how much you’ve actually set aside. All of the compounding in the world won’t help you if you never save any money. But if you consistently save as much as you can, you’ll be better able to weather market downturns — and take advantage of bull markets like the one we’ve enjoyed the past two years. The more you save now, the more you’ll have when you need it.
The National Economy vs. Your Personal Economy
Last January, Get Rich Slowly and MoneyRates asked readers of both sites for their opinion about the current state of the economy. Over 1200 people responded. This January, we asked the same question and received nearly 2100 answers. The results are certainly un-scientific, but they’re interesting:
Where do you think the economy sits right now?
Strong growth. Full steam ahead! 2010: 2%, 2011: 3%
On solid ground and growing some, thank goodness. 2010: 15%, 2011: 26%
Stagnant. Not growing, but at least not getting worse. 2010: 43%, 2011: 39%
Not horrible, but looks like it’s going downhill. 2010: 20%, 2011: 17%
Free falling. I’m bracing for the worst. 2010: 21%, 2011: 15%
Regardless of the state of the national economy, it’s important to remember that ultimately, you are responsible for your personal economy. When times are flush, you need to set something aside for the future – be it through a retirement savings plan, savings account, or other method. Then, when things turn dark and dismal, you’ll be better shielded from the slings and arrows life hurls your direction. My wife, for example, has done a fine job of ignoring the world at large while trying to improve her own situation.
It’s been a while since I stressed this point, so let me repeat what I’ve said before. A strong personal economy is built on personal-finance fundamentals such as these:
Clear financial goals
An adequate emergency fund
Limited use of debt
The practice of thrift
Smart investing for the future
The national economic situation will affect our personal financial decisions to some degree. When unemployment soars, it’s important to maintain an adequate emergency fund and to limit your use of debt. When the stock market is down, you need to understand your investment objectives, and how these relate to your risk tolerance and your investment timeline. (And when the stock market is up — as it is now — you need to ask the same questions.)
Ultimately, all you can control are your personal finances. Take matters into your own hands: Save for retirement today.
Getting your hands on a free copy of your credit report and checking it for errors is one of the easiest ways to help your financial health. Correcting even a small mistake can make a huge difference to your score. A higher score means lower interest rates, insurance quotes, and can even help you land some types of jobs. And it’s never been easier to get a copy of your free credit report.
AnnualCreditReport.com is a government-approved site that enables most people to gain access to their reports within minutes. Under law, you have the right to obtain a free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus once every twelve months. Courtney and I stagger our requests so that we are able to access a different bureau every four months.
Warning: There are many scam sites that try to rip-off AnnualCreditReport.com. Stay away from the cheesy commercials and catchy jingles. AnnualCreditReport.com is safe, approved, and regulated.
Ralph writes:
I’d like to know how to get a free copy of my credit report from the agencies.
A recent federal law gives consumers access to their credit reports; however, it costs extra to obtain your credit score. Your credit score is not an actual component of your credit report.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months.
There is never a need to go through any other agency to obtain your credit report. This is an official, government-approved site. If you’d like, you can obtain reports from all three credit reporting agencies at once. Or, you can stagger your requests, possibly requesting one report every four months from a different agency. There are three ways to obtain your credit report:
You will need to provide some basic information, including your social security number, and you may need to provide some personal financial information. If you plan to check your report online, be wary of impostor sites. Be absolutely certain that you have reached AnnualCreditReport.com.
It’s important to obtain a copy of your credit report at regular intervals. The credit reporting agencies are not infallible, and neither are your creditors. People make mistakes, and mistakes on your credit report can cost you money. If you suspect an error, read how to dispute credit report errors.
When you request your free credit report, you’ll also be given a chance to purchase your credit score for about $8. Your credit score is a single number that serves as a snapshot for your overall creditworthiness, a sort of summary of your entire credit report. To learn how your credit score is computed, read my anatomy of a credit score.
How to Obtain Your Free Credit Report
I don’t think people realize just how simple it can be to check your report! Below, I’ve taken step-by-step screen shots of each leg of the process:
On the homepage, all you need to do is select your state from the dropdown list and press the red “Request Report” button.
Next, enter the required information (marked with a red *).
I recommend checking the box (I’ve highlighted with the red arrow) to hide your social security number should you print out the report.
Enter in the security code and select “Continue”.
On this page you can select the bureau (or bureaus) you’d like to get your credit report from.
You can view all at once, but you’ll have to wait another full 12 months before re-visiting the same bureau. (In other words, if you pull all three at the same time, you can’t check any of them for free for an entire year.)
Courtney and I stagger our request and only pull one every four months.
Click “Next”.
This screen is just a confirmation that you’ll be visiting the specific site of the bureau you selected.
Click “Next”.
You are now asked to verify your identity on the specific site of the bureau.
This is Experian, although TransUnion and Equifax have similar confirmation screens.
Enter your information and press the red “SUBMIT”.
Experian would now like to make a quick buck.
Avoid the upsell, and click “Annual Credit Report” highlighted below.
Next is the Order Summary screen.
Verify the amount is $0.00 (Free).
Check the Terms & Conditions box. (If your name is J.D., you’ll want to read the whole damn thing before checking the box.)
Click the red “SUBMIT” button.
Lastly, you have one more confirmation screen before gaining access to the report.
Experian asks you four security questions regarding information on the file.
Answer the questions (some may very well be “NONE OF THE ABOVE”).
Click the red “CONTINUE” button.
Now you have access to your credit report!
Look over the Summary, Negative Items, Accounts in Good Standing, Requests, Personal Information, and Personal Statement tabs at the top.
Notice the “print your report” link I’ve highlighted in case you want to retain a copy.
As always, avoid the upsells to keep your access free!
Here is a real-life example of what identity theft looks like! There’s one negative item listed as “charged off”, but that was a fraudulent account. This is now the third time it’s appeared on Courtney’s report after being removed. Negative items feature a “Dispute this item” button that walks you through the dispute process.
This is an example of the “Requests for your credit history” tab. You can see there are two primary categories: one for “Requests viewed by others” (hard pulls) and one for “Requests viewed only by you” (soft pulls). In this example, a third party would not see any recent requests for use of credit, since there are none listed for that category.
Note: If you’ve already accessed your account in the last 12 months, you will be shown this screen when trying to log-in. (Of course, they are more than willing to sell you a report if you have a credit card!)
In the rare case you are denied access… If for one reason or another you are unable to obtain online access, you still have options for getting your free reports. You can:
Call 1-877-322-8228 to obtain a copy by phone; or
Complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form and mail it to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.
FreeCreditReport.com vs. AnnualCreditReport.com
Mark Frauenfelder (founder of the awesome Boing Boing) has a piece at PC.com that asks: When is a free credit report not a free credit report? The answer, of course, is: When it comes from FreeCreditReport.com.
FreeCreditReport.com, which has raised the ire of many, does allow people to look at their credit reports free for seven days, but then automatically enrolls users into a $15/month credit monitoring service. This last fact is a problem. Frauenfelder writes:
I clicked on the large bright orange button that said “Get your Free Credit Report & Score!” and was presented with a form. I filled it out. I hesitated for a second when the site asked for my credit card number, which it stated was “required to establish your account,” but the site assured me that my “credit card will not be charged during the free trial period.” Having done this before (or so I thought), I went ahead and entered the information. A shopping cart receipt indicated that the total was $0.00.
I got my credit report, looked it over, and forgot about it. A week later I was looking at my checking account register online and I noticed a $14.95 charge from a company called CIC*Triple Advantage. I didn’t recall buying anything from a company with that name, so I entered “CIC*Triple Advantage” into Google. The search results made my eyes bug out of my head. This was the name of the billing entity for freecreditreport.com. The thousands of search results were full of words like “deceptive practices,” “scam,” “ripoff,” “unauthorized billing!” and “beware!” In fact, all the top results were either from people complaining that they’d been conned into signing up for a $14.95 monthly credit monitoring service without their permission, or they were about how to cancel the service.
Frauenfelder admits that it’s his fault for being duped, but still thinks FreeCreditReport.com is slimy. Read the rest of his story for other problems he has with the service.
Finally, on a lighter note, a post in the GRS forums pointed to this spoof commercial highlighting the problems with FreeCreditReport.com.

Your Credit Report Card
Credit.comlaunched a free new online financial tool called Credit Report Card. This tool is designed to provide users with a quick snapshot of their credit reports. According to the site’s FAQ, “it breaks down your credit report into five simple-to-understand categories and gives you a letter grade for each one.”
Here are some things to know about Credit Report Card:
It’s absolutely free.
You can request a new report card every thirty days.
It draws its data from the TransUnion credit bureau.
Its data comes via a “soft pull” of your credit, so using it will not affect your credit score.
Curious, I signed up for Credit Report Card myself. Some GRS readers will be wary because the sign-up process requires that you submit your Social Security Number (which is needed to pull your credit report) and asks a couple of broad but personal questions. I felt comfortable with this, though, and created an account.
My overall credit “grade” is an A. I scored high in the areas where I knew my report was strong, and I scored a little lower in the areas where I knew it was weaker. (Though I do have a personal credit card now, I try to avoid credit when possible, so I don’t have as broad an “account mix” as I could.)
The bottom of the report contained a summary of the statistics used to produce the Credit Report Card. You can see that I spend about $1000 a month on my credit card, which I diligently pay in full. (This earns me about $10 a month because it’s a 1% cash back card.)
Each section of the Credit Report Card also contains a detailed explanation of how your grade was derived. These sections contain a couple of paragraphs each explaining how credit scores work and recommending actions you can take to improve your credit.
The Credit Report Card isn’t earth-shattering. It’s not a tool that’s going to revolutionize the way you deal with money. It is, however, a useful way to monitor your progress. I’ve added the site to my bookmarks, and I plan to check in every month or two when I’m doing my personal finances.
Get Your Free Credit Report
So what are you waiting for? If you’ve put this off in the past, schedule a time to get your free copy and review it for errors! Your credit score and your wallet will thank you.
Today we’ll take a deep dive into a major credit union that’s also a sizable mortgage lender, Pentagon Federal Credit Union, or PenFed for short.
While originally intended to serve the U.S. military, veterans, and various defense department government employees, today anyone can join PenFed, whether part of those groups or not.
For example, if you have no military affiliation whatsoever, it’s possible to join if your employer is eligible or if you make a small donation to an organization.
PenFed has been around since 1935, and today serves more than two million members worldwide with a whopping $25 billion in assets.
They lend in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as in Guam, Puerto Rico, and Okinawa. Let’s learn more.
PenFed Mortgage Fast Facts
Members-only credit union federally insured by NCUA
Founded in 1935, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia
Anyone free to join regardless of lack of military background
Offer checking and savings accounts, credit cards, mortgages, and HELOCs
Licensed to lend in all 50 states, D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico, and Okinawa
Funded $18.9 billion in home loans last year
Did about a fifth of total loan volume in home state or Virginia
Also operate a wholly-owned title insurance company called PenFed Title, LLC and real estate brokerage called PenFed Realty
As noted, anyone can join PenFed, though they are a members-only credit union. So once you become a member, you can take advantage of their many product offerings, including home mortgages.
Last year, the Alexandria, VA-based credit union did roughly $18.9 billion in total home loan origination volume, with about a fifth of it in its home state of Virginia.
A good chunk was also originated in the nearby states of Maryland and Florida, along with Texas and faraway California.
Home purchase loans accounted for roughly 50% of volume, with 25% rate and term refinances, almost 20% cash out refinances, and the remainder HELOCs.
And while most of their home loans were fixed-rate mortgages, they offer a variety of adjustable-rate mortgages as well.
How to Apply for a Home Loan with PenFed Mortgage
Members can submit their loan application directly from their account on PenFed Online
They ask that you call them or submit a call back request online if refinancing or inquiring about a HELOC
Those looking to generate a pre-approval can do so right away via the online portal
They offer a digital mortgage loan experience that allows you to complete most tasks electronically
Assuming you’re a PenFed member, it’s possible to get the ball rolling simply by calling them up directly or by filling out a short call back request form on their website.
If you’re looking for a mortgage pre-approval for a home purchase, you can also begin on your own via the PenFed online portal.
Speaking of real estate, PenFed operates an affiliated real estate brokerage known as PenFed Realty, which is backed by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices.
Like many other banks and lenders, PenFed offers a digital mortgage experience where you can eSign disclosures, scan and upload documents, receive real-time status updates, and check loan progress 24/7.
PenFed also operates its own title insurance company, which might speed up the loan process and/or result in discounts on such services.
Loan Programs Available at PenFed Mortgage
Home purchase loans
Refinance loans (rate and term and cash out)
Conventional loans backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
Jumbo loans up to $5 million loan amounts
VA loans for eligible military and veterans
Home equity lines of credit (HELOCs)
Various fixed-rate and adjustable-rate options available
PenFed offers both home purchase financing and refinance loans on a variety of property types, including single-family homes and condos/townhomes, along with multi-unit properties.
It’s possible to finance a primary residence, second home, or investment property using a conventional loan backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, or a jumbo home loan that exceeds the conforming loan limit.
They also specialize in VA loans seeing that they were originally geared specifically toward military and veterans.
While they don’t offer FHA loans or USDA loans, which is a major downside for some borrowers, they do offer a home equity line of credit (HELOC) product, with the possibility to tap equity up to 90% CLTV.
PenFed pays most of the closing costs on the HELOC, and will waive the $99 annual fee if $99 in interest is paid during the preceding 12-month period.
The only caveat on that product is if you pay it off or close it within 36 months you’ll need to reimburse the full amount of the PenFed-paid closing costs for the loan.
PenFed also offers some unique proprietary loan programs like their 15/15 ARM or their 5/5 ARM if you’re looking for something a little different.
And they offer traditional ARMs like the 5/6 ARM and 7/6 ARM, along with the usual fixed-rate options like a 30-year and 15-year fixed.
PenFed Mortgage Rates
One nice thing about PenFed is the fact that they openly advertise their mortgage rates for all to see on their website.
You don’t need to sign in to see their rates – simply surf over to their site to see today’s rates on a variety of products including conventional fixed-rate loans, jumbo fixed-rate loans, and VA loans.
They don’t advertise their ARM rates so you’ll either need to click on “Get My Rate” to generate your own mortgage rate quote on their website or call in for pricing if you want an adjustable-rate mortgage.
From what I saw, their mortgage rates were competitive, especially since they say they don’t charge lender fees.
Additionally, those purchasing a home get a lender credit ranging from $500 to $2,500 depending on loan amount, which can be used to offset any third-party closing costs like the home appraisal or title insurance.
All in all, PenFed’s mortgage rates seem competitive and the lack of lender fees makes them even more desirable when you consider the mortgage APR.
PenFed Mortgage Reviews
They have a rather marginal 3.8-star rating out of 5 on Zillow, though it’s only based on about two dozen customer reviews. Still, it leaves a lot to be desired.
Similarly, they have a 3.9-star rating out of 5 on WalletHub from a much larger sample size of about 6,000 reviews, but that may include non-mortgage related products.
However, quite a few seem to focus on their mortgage or home equity products, so you’ll be able to read about relevant customer experiences.
It’s the same story over at Bankrate, a 3-star rating from eight reviews. Again, not a lot there, but still seems to be consistent with other ratings sites.
While they aren’t a Better Business Bureau accredited company, they do currently have an ‘A+’ BBB rating based on complaint history.
But their customer reviews on the BBB website are rather poor, with a 1.2-star rating on 75 reviews at last glance.
So it seems they’re struggling a bit in the customer satisfaction department, despite having a solid website, competitive mortgage rates, and no lender fees.
PenFed Mortgage Pros and Cons
The Good
They openly advertise their mortgage rates which appear to be competitive
Don’t charge lender fees
Lender credit specials on home purchase loans
Can apply for a mortgage online via digital process
Offer lots of home loan programs including home equity products
Jumbo loan amounts as high as $5 million
Free mortgage calculators on their website
They service their home loans

While using your credit card can be an easy and convenient way to make purchases, you’ll need to be on the lookout for would-be thieves. The level of credit card fraud that occurs is staggering. According to recent data from industry publication The Nilson Report, payment card losses amounted to $27.85 billion in 2019.
To protect yourself from credit card fraud, you might consider a virtual credit card. We’ll talk about what a virtual credit card is, their advantages and downsides, and how to get a virtual credit card.
What Is a Virtual Credit Card?
A virtual credit card is a temporary, disposable credit card that can be used when making online purchases. Their intent to safeguard your actual credit card numbers from fraudsters. In turn, it could protect your credit card from hackers.
Virtual credit cards are made for temporary use. When you use a card online, the retailer can only see and store the temporary credit card number, adding another layer of protection should a data breach occur.

How Do Virtual Credit Cards Work?
Not all credit card networks issue virtual credit cards. If a virtual credit card is offered, you can request a temp credit card from the bank through your online account. When you get a virtual credit card, the 16-digit number is randomly generated, and comes with a security code and expiration date. This information is tied to your account.
A major perk of a virtual credit card is that they’re intended for temporary use. These cards typically expire after a day, although some have a 12-month expiration date. A new 16-digit credit card code can be generated for each transaction.
Virtual Credit Card vs Digital Wallet
The major difference between virtual wallets and digital wallets is that with a digital wallet, you would store the exact credit card numbers as what’s on your credit card. When you make a purchase with a digital wallet, however, many digital wallets store a temporary card number.
Another major difference between the two is where they can be used. You can use a virtual credit card for any online purchase where credit cards are accepted. A digital wallet, on the other hand, can only be used at retailers where digital wallet payments are accepted, which might not be everywhere.

Pros
Here are the major upsides of using virtual credit cards:
• Greater protection from fraudsters: Your actual 16-digital credit card number, payment information, and personal information is safeguarded when using a virtual credit card. In the case that a hacker steals your virtual card number, that number will expire shortly. Plus, the hacker won’t have access to your personal information or identity.
• Flexibility in use: You can change your temp card number as often as you like, at the drop of a hat, and create new card numbers for different retailers. You can even set spending limits or freeze your account without the same changes being reflected in your actual credit card account.
• Transactions are posted to your account: While the credit card number is a temporary one, credit card charges made with your virtual card do show up on your credit card statements. In turn, you can keep better track of all purchases, whether using a virtual card with temporary numbers or your actual credit card number. This tie to your account also means you can get cash back rewards with a credit card even if it’s temporary.
• Ability to customize how long the number stays active: Depending on the credit card issuer, you might be able to customize the length of time a virtual card number stays active. Or, you can set a specific spending limit. This might come in handy if you’re using a joint credit card, or if you use a virtual credit card for recurring monthly purchases.
Cons
There are also drawbacks to virtual credit cards that are important to take into account as well. These include:
• Generally can only be used online or over the phone: Due to their nature and intent, virtual credit cards generally can only be used online and for some over-the-phone purchases. So it won’t offer fraud protections when you use your credit card for brick-and-mortar purchases. However, if you link your virtual credit card to your digital wallet, you might be able to use your virtual credit card at select physical locations.
• Might be more challenging to use for certain purchases: If you’re using a virtual card to book a flight or hotel reservation, and the card number expires after 24 hours, it could get a little prickly when the hotel asks for the same credit card number. In those cases, you might need to call your bank, or consider using a permanent credit card.
• Might be harder to get a refund: Another scenario when using a virtual credit card can be more complicated is when a refund is issued and the retailer can’t refund the amount to a virtual card after it has expired. In that case, you might have to opt for a store credit instead.
• Requires extra legwork to get: If you want to take advantage of the added security of a virtual credit card number, you might have to make a bit more effort than just swiping your card. You’ll have to contact your issuer each time you want to get a temp credit card number, and stay on top of short usage windows.

How Is a Virtual Credit Card Number Generated?
Virtual credit card numbers are randomly generated sequences that are linked to your existing credit card account, just like an authorized user on a credit card would be. In some cases, to access the virtual card number, you’ll need to download the virtual card issuer’s app. Other issuers may allow you to do so through their website or through the existing banking app.
Depending on the credit card issuer, you might receive a virtual card number for different merchants. Or, you might receive a randomized 16-digital credit card sequence to use for any merchant.
The number might be good for 24 hours, after which you’d need to request a new number. Some virtual credit cards allow you to choose when a credit card is set to expire. For instance, you might choose for it to expire after a day of use, or after several months so you can use the same virtual card for recurring purchases.
Tips for Protecting Your Identity Online
Even using a virtual credit card number doesn’t make you immune to theft. Here are some ways to protect your identity and virtual credit card online:
• Sign up for a credit monitoring service. This will help you detect any suspicious behavior.
• Use a virtual private network (VPN). For a more secure connection, connect to a VPN when using public WiFi.
• Create unique passwords. Passwords to online merchant accounts should not only be unique, but a combination of letters and numbers.
• Set up alerts on your virtual credit card. Setting up alerts on your credit card for online purchases can make you immediately aware of fraudulent activity.
• Use trusted, known sites. For instance, check to see if the site is secure and has “https” instead of “http” in the URL.
• Don’t buy into credit card loss protection. If you receive an unsolicited email or call from someone claiming to be from the security department of a credit card company and asking you to activate the protection features on your card, beware. It’s a scam. You don’t need it, as credit cards typically have built-in liability protection.

Virtual Credit Card Alternatives
If your credit card issuer doesn’t offer a virtual credit card, or you don’t think it’s a good fit for you, here are some other options:
• Prepaid credit cards: If concern when using a credit card for a purchase is top of mind, a prepaid credit card is a reloadable card that you can use for purchases. Note that while these are a safe way to make purchases, prepaid credit cards come stacked with fees and don’t help you build credit.
• Gift cards: A gift card is also a safe way to make purchases online without fraudsters accessing your personal information or credit card number. Gift cards can be used for particular merchants or anywhere the credit card network with which the gift card is associated is accepted.
The Takeaway
A virtual credit card can provide an extra layer of protection and prevent your credit card and personal information from getting into the wrong hands. However, you can typically only use virtual credit cards for online purchases and some purchases over the phone. Plus, they usually can only be used temporarily, often for one day.
