What to consider when opening CDs
CD rates are fixed. If you open nearly any Citibank CD today, its annual percentage yield will stay the same until the CD expires. The exception for Citibank is its step-up CD, offered for a 30-month term, which has two built-in rate increases.
Be aware of two common rules with CDs: You can’t make partial withdrawals or add additional funds after depositing money into a CD. Withdrawals of interest already earned are allowed for standard and step-up CDs, but not no-penalty CDs.
You lose interest if you withdraw early. CDs are built to keep your money out of sight, out of mind. If you dip into almost any Citibank CD before it expires, there’s an early withdrawal penalty, which means losing some or all of the interest you earned. There is one exception in Citibank’s case:, its 12-month no-penalty CD. (Compare this with other no-penalty CDs.)
Interest accrues in a CD during the term, so you can benefit from compound interest. Alternatively, you can request to receive interest during the term to an external account or by check.
CDs auto renew unless you opt out. In addition, no-penalty and step-up CDs automatically renew into standard CDs of the same term length as the original CD. To avoid renewal, withdraw during the grace period.

Like a savings account, a CD’s rate is primarily quoted as an annual percentage yield (APY), meaning the annual interest rate that factors in compounding. So, here are the scenarios for both cases.
For general purposes, we are going to assume you work 40 hours per week over the course of the year.
Case # 1 – With Paid Time Off
Most hourly employees get two weeks of paid time off which is equivalent to 2 weeks of paid time off.
In this case, you would make $56,160 per year.
This is the same as the example above for an annual salary making $27 per hour.
Case #2 – No Paid Time Off
Unfortunately, not all employers offer paid time off to their hourly employees. While that is unfortunate, it is best to plan for less income.
Life happens. There will be times you need to take time off for numerous reasons – sick time, handling an emergency, or even vacation.
So, let’s assume you take 2 weeks off without paid time off.
That means you would only work 50 weeks of the year instead of all 52 weeks. Take 40 hours times 50 weeks and that equals 2,000 working hours. Then, multiply the hourly salary of $27 times 2,000 working hours, and the result is $55,000.

You would average $208 per working day and nothing when you don’t work.

Unraveling Federal Student Loan Repayment
First, you must understand the different types of Federal Student loans to know their repayment requirements.
Each loan type has its own set of rules and repayment schedule, typically beginning after you graduate, leave school, or drop below half-time enrollment.
Federal loans boast flexible repayment options.1
The Standard Repayment Plan for federal loans entails a fixed monthly payment amount, ensuring that the loans are fully repaid within a standard period of 10 years, and extends to 30 years for direct consolidation loans. This plan is often the quickest way to pay off loans, providing a consistent monthly payment over the repayment term.
The Graduated Repayment Plan starts with lower monthly payments that increase every two years, designed to pay off all student loans within 10 years, or 30 years if it’s a direct consolidation loan.
The Extended Repayment Plan offers borrowers with over $30,000 in federal student loans the flexibility of fixed or graduated payments over a 25-year period.
If affordability is a concern, you might settle on an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan, which keys your monthly payments to your earnings and family size. Should your finances take a downward turn, relief is available through programs like deferment or forbearance, allowing you to temporarily suspend payments.

Net asset value, as mentioned above, is calculated by taking a company or investment fund’s total assets and subtracting its liabilities. This figure is usually divided by the fund’s number of outstanding shares because NAV is generally represented on a per-share basis. The formula looks like this:
NAV = (Total Value of Assets – Total Value of Liabilities) / Number of Shares Outstanding
How NAV Is Used for Investments
NAV can be used for investments, and by investors, in a number of ways, often depending on the specific type of asset an investor is analyzing. It can give investors insight into a fund’s performance, but doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story.
Mutual Funds
Mutual funds are usually open-ended funds, meaning that investors buy and sell shares of the fund from the fund directly and not on an exchange like a stock. Because these funds don’t trade on an exchange for market prices, NAV is used to price the fund’s shares.
Mutual funds calculate their NAV per share daily, usually at the end of the business day, and that is the price an investor will pay to buy or sell shares in the fund. Every mutual fund company has its own cut-off time for buying and selling shares. After that time, investors buying or selling shares will get the fund’s NAV for the day after their transaction order is received.

ETFs are still required to calculate the fund’s NAV once per day, like a mutual fund. Additionally, an ETF’s NAV is calculated approximately every 15 seconds over each trading day and published on various financial websites.
Because ETFs tend to trade at a premium or a discount to their NAV, traders often compare market prices and NAV to take advantage of the differences and make investment decisions.
Example of Calculating Mutual Fund NAV
As an example of calculating mutual fund NAV, imagine that mutual fund XYZ has $100 million worth of investments in different securities, based on the day’s closing prices for each security, and $10 million in liabilities and expenses. The NAV for this fund would be $90 million. If the fund has 5 million shares outstanding, the NAV per share for mutual fund XYZ would be $18.
The NAV for mutual fund XYZ can be calculated using the above formula:
NAV = ($100,000,000 – $10,000,000) / 5,000,000 = $18
How to Interpret NAV Results
A fund’s NAV alone doesn’t tell investors much; a high NAV for one fund is not necessarily better than a low NAV in another fund. Similar to stock prices, a high stock price doesn’t necessarily mean the stock is a better investment than a stock with a lower price.
Looking at a fund’s NAV and comparing it to another fund does not provide investors insight into which fund is the better investment. Other factors can also impact a fund’s NAV. For example, the fund’s management fee and additional fees that add up to the fund’s total expense ratio will come out of the fund’s total assets, thus affecting NAV. In addition to management fees, expenses can include costs related to the administrative, compliance, distribution, management, marketing, shareholder services, and record-keeping of the fund. It’s common practice for mutual funds to assess this debit on the fund’s assets every trading day.
When NAV Isn’t Everything
If a mutual fund invests in dividend-paying stocks or fixed-income assets, these securities’ dividends and interest payments go to the investor. Additionally, a mutual fund may distribute realized capital gains to shareholders. These payouts reduce the fund’s assets and result in a lower NAV. Because these benefits lower a fund’s NAV, it shows that NAV may not be the only figure to pay attention to when analyzing the performance of a fund.
When analyzing the performance of mutual funds, it can make sense to look at metrics other than NAV alone, like investment yield and the funds’ total return. The total return considers capital gains and losses from all of the securities the fund invests in, as well as the dividends and interest earned by the fund, minus the fund’s expenses.

And since the Baxter family’s home is a key element in grounding the emotional depth of the series, we reached out to the production crew to learn more about how it was brought to life on screen.
The house is a memorable silent character from the very first episode
Although the first season focuses primarily on Kari’s (Ali Cobrin) story, the Baxters’ house takes center stage from the very first scene, when the family converges to celebrate mother Elizabeth Baxter’s (played by Roma Downey) birthday.
The Baxter residence shines from its very first moment in the spotlight. And that’s not by accident.
Production designer Rodrigo Cabral envisioned a home that mirrors John and Elizabeth’s loving, nurturing nature.
“We wanted their home to radiate warmth and tranquility—a safe haven for the family to gather, heal, and grow,” Cabral tells us.
This vision translated into cozy interiors, balanced spaces, and a decor that promotes comfort and family togetherness, making the house a cornerstone of the show’s narrative.
Design inspirations behind the scenes
The design of the Baxter home reflects the broader experiences of American families, aiming to echo their quest for happiness and balance.
“The Baxter family is a close representation of so many American families, not only in their interiors but also in their pursuit of happiness and balance,” Rodrigo Cabral shares with Fancy Pants Homes.
“We got inspired by the experiences with real families that have been part of our lives. I had some great chats with the showrunner, directors, and crew about each character’s vibe and inner world, which really helped shape our vision.”
Cabral notes that the set design was influenced by discussions about each character’s inner world and successful elements from other family dramas like This is Us. “Our goal was to create a setting that feels real and informative, yet allows the characters’ stories to unfold naturally,” he explains.
Style elements that define the interiors
When asked about the decor of the Baxters house, Cabral shares that “John and Elizabeth’s house has a traditional decor style that’s classic, warm, comforting and familiar. We used neutral tones, some warm pattern fabrics with traditional antique furniture and a lot of details like plenty of family photos to show their history and connection throughout the years.”
No attention to detail was spared in creating the sets, and special attention was given to elements that reflect the lives, beliefs, and faith of its inhabitants.
“Some of the antique pieces help reinforce their traditional values by invoking the idea of family history and its importance like little family heirlooms in the background. And these elements are carried around throughout the rest of the house and a bit to Kari’s interior as well.”
A real home in Brentwood was used to film shots of the Baxters’ house
Underscoring the show’s commitment to authenticity, a real house in the family-friendly Los Angeles suburb of Brentwood served as filming location for The Baxters house.
Set in the San Fernando Valley area of LA, Brentwood is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and has hosted other iconic television homes, including Jay and Gloria’s house on Modern Familyand the now-iconic Banks mansion from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
This suburb is often chosen for its portrayal of upscale American family life.
