So, for example, if you have an investment that generates a 5% annual return, it would take around 14.5 years to double it. On the other hand, an investment that’s generating a 12% annual return would double in about six years.

Everyday apartment cleaning checklist
Leaving all the cleaning to one day of the month won’t help you stay on top of things. It would help if you started building cleaning habits that you put into action every day. Here are a few cleaning tips that will help you do a little every single day.
Clean as you go to keep the apartment tidy
The key to this is to ‘put it away when you’re done with it.’ If you’re walking by your living room, fold up the blankets, take any clothes to your laundry hamper and quickly puff up your throw pillows.
If you go to the bedroom to get something, grab the laundry hamper and start a load of laundry or bring your laptop or books, you left in the kitchen with you.
When you’re in the bathroom, check the trash can, open the shower curtain to let it air out and keep a box of disinfecting wipes on top of the toilet so you can quickly clean the sink as you’re standing there. Any spills that sit overnight will be harder to clean later. It all takes a few minutes and will shave off time spent on cleaning every weekend.
Concentrate on one room
While you’re in the kitchen cooking dinner, start cleaning all countertops as you wait for the water to begin boiling or empty the dishwasher so you can start to load it as soon as dinner is ready. Make a note to check the trash every night and take it out if it’s full.
If it’s the weekend and you have time, go ahead and work your way from top to bottom in the kitchen or bathroom. Start by clearing out any debris from countertops, backsplash, reorganizing and then clean the floors.
Keep a cleaning tote and garbage bag with you
A quick hack is to have cleaning wipes nearby for the kitchen and bathroom so you can quickly do the task at hand. If you have to think about it, you’ll procrastinate. But another similar hack is to have a cleaning tote.
As you move from room to room, you can take the tote with you — include rags, cleaning sprays, sponges, dusters and anything else you use to deep clean. Also, bring a garbage bag along with you so you can throw out any excess trash lying around and maybe even declutter a few items as you go.
How to deep clean your apartment
Sometimes, despite cleaning a little every day, those tough stains stick around, and you have to call in reinforcements. You can get rid of weird smells and avoid deep scrubbing with a few household items — some of them are pantry items, too!
Clean your dishwasher monthly
Dishwashers need to be cleaned too! You’re putting dirty plates, grease and so much more every time you run a cycle and mildew, or food residue will build up over time. Luckily it’s easy to do — no scrubbing need it. First, run a wash cycle with a small dish of white vinegar placed on the dishwasher’s top shelf to sanitize the interior.
Once that’s done, sprinkle baking soda along the bottom of the dishwasher to deodorize the inside and run another wash cycle.
Deodorize your garbage disposal
A foul-smelling garbage disposal can indeed linger in the air and make your clean apartment smell terrible. A quick hack using lemons and white vinegar can help you get rid of it. Use an ice cube tray, fill each one with white vinegar and tiny lemon chunks, and then wait for it to freeze.
When needed, drop one of the frozen cubes in and run warm water for a minute or so while the disposal is on.
No bending required to clean that oven
After that frozen pizza you made, your oven looks extra greasy dirty. But who wants to spend a few hours bent down to scrub off grease and gunk in the range? You can clean your oven while you do other kitchen tasks. If you know your oven model, check the internet for cleaning instructions or follow these instructions.
Preheat your oven to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Meanwhile, set a medium-sized pot of water to boil on the stovetop. Once the oven preheats, turn it off. If you have a gas stove, make sure the pilot light extinguishes as soon as you have finished preheating the oven.
Once your oven is preheated, and the water is boiling, pour one cup of ammonia (use gloves!) into a shallow baking dish and place it on the top rack of your oven. Place the pot of boiling water on the bottom shelf.
Leave it in there for a minimum of three hours
Once the ammonia has had enough time to loosen any messes inside the oven, remove the ammonia and water. Add a small amount of dish soap to the ammonia, and use the soapy ammonia mixture and a sponge to wipe away any grease or grime. It should be relatively easy since the ammonia loosened the stains.
Don’t forget about your other appliances when cleaning your apartment
While the stove is always top of mind for cleaning, don’t forget about your other appliances. It’s still good to empty the refrigerator, check expiration dates and give the shelves a good scrub with a little dish soap and a sponge. Or grab a disinfecting spray and clean the inside of the microwave — those greasy stains can go everywhere.
If you have a coffee machine, fill the reservoir with half white vinegar and half water and run the brew cycle to get rid of any mildew that may be building up in there.
Other things to deep clean
As you wait for things to soak, here are a few things you can quickly do as you move from room to room.
Walk around with your disinfecting spray and clean all the doorknobs, trash cans, light switches, handles and faucets to eliminate any lingering bacteria.
Throw your shower curtain in the shower with some OxiClean or half a cup of baking soda and half a cup of laundry detergent to get rid of any mold.
Clean the toilet seat and the bowl. Add a cleaning pod to the toilet tank to get any remaining things off in the next few flushes. Keep a little cleaning station next to the toilet to make the task easier.
Change your bedsheets and drop the other ones in the washer along with the rest of your laundry.
Walk around with the duster and clean all picture frames, surfaces, windowsills, coffee tables and even around the TV.
Don’t forget to vacuum under the couch and bed and move furniture around to get every corner of your rug clean.
If you have a fan, don’t skip the ceiling fan blades. Grab a damp dust cloth, start from the center and wipe out to catch everything in your fabric.
If you have a work station, grab a disinfecting wipe and clean your keyboard, mouse and other desk surfaces. Use a keyboard cleaner to remove any crumbs or dust.

A bear market is defined as a broad market decline of 20% or more from recent highs, which lasts for at least two months. Although bear markets make for dramatic headlines, the truth is that bull markets tend to last much longer — the average bear market typically ends within a year.
While most investors know the difference between a bull and a bear market, it’s important to know some of the characteristics of bear markets in order to understand how different market conditions may impact your portfolio and your investment choices.
What Is a Bear Market?
Investors and market watchers generally define a bear market as a drop of 20% or more from market highs. So when investors refer to a bear market, it usually means that multiple broad market indexes, such as the Standard & Poors 500 Index (S&P 500), Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), and others, fell by 20% or more over at least two months.
To be sure, 20% is a somewhat arbitrary barometer, but it’s a common enough standard throughout the financial world.
The term bear market can also be used to describe a specific security. For example, when a particular stock drops 20% in a short time, it can be said that the stock has entered a bear market.
Bear markets are usually associated with economic recessions, although this isn’t always the case. As economic activity slows, people lose jobs, consumer spending falls, and business earnings decline. As a result, many companies may see their share prices tumble or stagnate as investors pull back.
Why Is It Called a Bear Market?
There are a variety of explanations for why “bear” and “bull” have come to describe specific market conditions. Some say a market slump is like a bear going into hibernation, versus a bull market that keeps charging upward.
The origins of the term bear market may also have come from the so-called bearskin market in the 18th century or earlier. There was a proverb that said it is unwise to sell a bear’s skin before one has caught the bear. Over time the term bearskin, and then bear, became used to describe the selling of assets.
Characteristics of a Bear Market
There are two different types of bear markets:
• Regular bear market or cyclical bear market: The market declines and takes a few months to a year to recover.
• Secular bear market: This type of bear market lasts longer and is driven more by long-term market trends than short-term consumer sentiment. A cyclical bear market can happen within a secular bear market.
History of Bear Markets
The most recent U.S. bear market began in June 2022, largely sparked by rising interest rates and inflation. The bear market officially ended on June 8, 2023, lasting about 248 trading days, according to Dow Jones Market Data, and resulting in a market drop of about 25.4%.
Including the most recent bear market, the S&P 500 Index posted 12 declines of more than 20% since World War II. The table below shows the S&P 500’s returns from the highest point to the lowest point in a downturn. Bear markets average a decline of 34%, and generally last a little more than a year: about 400 days.

Bear markets have occurred as close together as two years and as far apart as nearly 12 years. A secular bear market refers to a longer period of lower-than-average returns; this could last 10 years or more. A secular bear market may include minor rallies, but these don’t take hold.
A cyclical bear market is more likely to last a few weeks to a few months and is more a function of market volatility.

What Causes a Bear Market?
Usually bear markets are caused by a loss of consumer, investor, and business confidence. Various factors can contribute to the loss of consumer confidence, such as changes to interest rates, global events, falling housing prices, or changes in the economy.
When the market reaches a high, people may feel that certain assets are overvalued. In that instance, people are less likely to buy those assets and more likely to start selling them, which can make prices fall.
When other investors see that prices are falling, they may anticipate that the market has reached a peak and will start declining, so they may also sell off their assets to try and profit on them before the decline. In some cases panic can set in, leading to a mass sell-off and a stock market crash (but this is rare).
Is a Recession the Same as a Bear Market?
No. Bear market conditions can lead to recessions if the market slump lasts long enough. But this isn’t always the case. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research as reported in The New York Times, the U.S. has been in a recession only 14% of the time since World War II.
What Is a Bear Market Rally
Things can get tricky if there is a bear market rally. This happens when the market goes back up for a number of days or weeks, but the rise is only temporary. Investors may think that the market decline has ended and start buying, but it may in fact continue to decline after the rally. Sometimes the market does recover and go back into a bull market, but this is hard to predict.
If the bear market continues on long enough then it becomes a recession, which can go on for months or years. That said, it’s not always the case that a bear market means there will be a recession.
Once asset prices have decreased as much as they possibly can, consumer confidence begins to rise again, and people start buying. This reverses the bear market trend into a bull market, and the market starts to recover and grow again.
Example of a Bear Market
The most recent bear market occurred in June of 2022, when the S&P 500 closed 21.8% lower than its high on Jan. 3, 2022.
While the Nasdaq and the Dow showed a similar pattern in early 2022, the decline of those markets didn’t cross the 20% mark that signals official bear market territory.
Bear Market vs Bull Market
A bull market is essentially the opposite of a bear market. As consumer confidence increases, money goes into the markets and they go up.
A bull market is defined as a 20% rise from the low that the market hit in a bear market. However, the parameters of a bull market are not as clearly defined as they are for a bear market. Once the bottom of the bear market has been reached, people generally feel that a bull market has started.
Investing Tips During a Bear Market
There are a few different bear market investing strategies one can use to both prepare for a bear market and navigate through one.
1. Reduce Risky Investments
When preparing for a bear market, it’s a good idea to reduce riskier holdings such as growth stocks and speculative assets. One can move money into cash, gold, bonds, or other ‘safe’ investments to reduce the risk of losses if the market goes down.
These safe investments tend to perform better than stocks during a bear market. Types of stocks that tend to weather bear markets well include consumer staples and healthcare companies.
2. Diversify
Another investing strategy is diversification. Rather than having all of one’s money in stocks, distribute your investments across asset classes, e.g. precious metals, bonds, crypto, real estate, or other types of investments.
This way, if one type of asset goes down a lot, the others might not go down as much. Similarly, one asset may increase a lot in value, but it’s hard to predict which one, so diversifying increases the chances that one will be exposed to the upward trend, and you’ll see a gain.

However, in a broad sense if the market is at a high and assets are clearly overvalued, this may not be the best time to buy. And vice versa if assets are clearly undervalued it may be a good time to buy and grow one’s portfolio. A bear market can be a good time to identify assets that might grow in the next bull market and start investing in them.
5. Short Selling
A very risky strategy that some investors take is short selling in anticipation of a bear market. This involves borrowing shares and selling them, then hoping to buy them back at a lower price. It’s risky because there is no guarantee that the price of the shares will fall, and since the shares are borrowed, typically using a margin account, they may end up owing the broker money if their trade doesn’t work out as they hope.
Overall, it’s best to create a long-term investing strategy rather than focusing on short-term trends and making reactive decisions to market changes. It can be scary to watch one’s portfolio go down, especially if it happens fast, but selling off assets because the market is crashing generally doesn’t turn out well for investors.

As the world continues to cope with COVID-19, America is seeing cases of identity theft soar to record highs. Of the 3.2 million reports to the FTC’s Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book in 2019, 20% — or 650,572 — related to identity theft. And already in the first quarter of 2020, reports of fraud and identity theft are up 20.1% from the previous quarter.
The numbers could rise as more people continue to work from home and new reports of coronavirus-related fraud and scams come in.
Among these all-time-high cases, credit card fraud leads the charge.

Identity Theft vs. Account Takeover
Identity theft involves the unauthorized access of personal information, such as your name and Social Security number. Account takeover is when a fraudster accesses account information, such as credit card numbers, with the intent of committing fraud on existing accounts.
In 2019, victims reported $160.3 million worth of losses resulting from identity theft, according to the FBI. Credit card fraud made up the overwhelming majority of that $160.3 million.
This number represents only what was reported through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. However, and doesn’t account for reports made directly to field agents.
Most Common Types of Identity Theft
Swiping the competition in 2019 was credit card fraud, which accounted for 41.78% of all identity theft reports to the FBI, followed by other identity theft, which includes fraud conducted via email and social media. The least common was government documents or benefit fraud at 3.54%.

The dubious honor of state with the most identity theft reports goes to Georgia, with the Peach State logging 423 cases per 100,000 people in 2019–176 of those falling under the credit card fraud umbrella.
Florida came in just south of Georgia with 154 cases of credit card fraud per 100,000 people, followed by California and Texas.
The state with the fewest number of reports was South Dakota, with 47 reports of fraud per 100,000 people, followed by Vermont and Wyoming.
Several states in the middle of the country also came in at the middle of the pack, like Missouri and Colorado, with 41 and 45 reports of credit card fraud per capita, respectively.

Georgia maintains its top spot in individual metropolitan areas, accounting for three of the five areas with the most reports of identity theft per capita–Warner Robins, Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell and Macon-Bibb County. A person convicted of financial transaction card fraud of more than $100.00 within a six-month period in Georgia can be charged with a felony. The ramifications can be a fine of up to $5,000.00 or a prison term of one and five years. On the flip side, Muncie, Indiana, logged the least number of reports at 37 per 100,000 people, followed by Glens Falls, New York, and Tullahoma-Manchester, Tennessee.

A virtual assistant provides administrative, technical, or creative support to clients from home.

Grocery delivery services are popular because there are more and more people who want someone to do their grocery shopping for them.
Services like Instacart need personal grocery shoppers, and the average shopper makes $15 to $20 an hour to deliver groceries. Drivers are paid per order, and you get to keep 100% of your tips. You also get to choose your schedule, so a teacher could choose to work in the evenings or on weekends. Or, you could choose to only deliver groceries during the summer.

If you like restaurants, pubs and nightclubs, this is where you’ll find an endless variety of all of them. Uptown is also home to most of the city’s major sporting events.
This neighborhood has four wards. Second and Fourth Ward are mainly residential, but are walkable to the First and Third Ward, which are the commercial districts. Frazier Dog Park on the edge of the neighborhood is great for your four-legged friends, while sports fans will have plenty to do watching the Carolina Panthers play at Bank of America stadium.

Once an identity thief has your Social Security number, they can commit all sorts of financial fraud, potentially leaving you on the hook for their misconduct. Social Security numbers are wrapped up in most aspects of Americans’ lives—employment, medical history, taxes, education and bank accounts, to name a few. Below is a list of just a few things someone can do with your SSN if they get their hands on it.
1. Open Financial Accounts
Your Social Security number is the most important piece of personal information a bank needs when extending you credit or opening an account. With that number, a thief can get credit cards or loans. And when it’s time to repay them, they won’t, which will damage your credit score. Those missed payments are tied to your Social Security number, so they’ll end up on your credit report and could impact your ability to apply for any type of loan or new account in the future.
Once you spot suspicious transactions, you can use your credit scores and credit reports to detect fraud and put an end to it. Unfortunately, it could take years for the fraudulent information to be removed from your credit report and, as a result, for your credit scores to recover.
Can Someone Access My Bank Account with My Social Security Number?
Thieves might have a difficult time accessing your bank account if they only knew your Social Security number. Most of the time, to either access an existing account or open up a new bank account, the bank would require additional forms of identification, such as your physical Social Security card, Real ID or passport.
Also, many banks have implemented additional security measures to prevent this, such as requiring security questions to access your bank account.
2. Get Medical Care
Someone using your Social Security number could also undergo medical treatment, effectively tainting your medical records. Inaccurate medical records can have deadly consequences. For example, imagine what could happen if you received treatment based on a false history listing the wrong blood type. Additionally, thieves can poach your health insurance coverage, which could leave you in a bind when you need it.
3. File a Fraudulent Tax Refund
Taxpayer identity theft continues to be a problem in the United States, although theIRS reported in 2018 that incidents were on the general decline, noting a 40% decrease in taxpayer reports of identity theft since 2016. However, in 2017, the IRS still received 242,000 reports of identity theft from taxpayers.
Identity thieves use stolen Social Security numbers to get a fraudulent refund, which then delays any refund the victim is rightfully owed.
So, the sooner you file your taxes, the more likely you’ll get your refund before an identity thief has an opportunity to take advantage of your stolen identity. You’ll know someone stole your identity if your return is rejected as a duplicate. Then, you get to start the process of resolving the fraud and, if necessary, getting the refund you deserve.
4. Commit Crimes
Getting your Social Security number might just be a fraction of the thief’s crimes. If the identity thief gets arrested for another crime and gives your Social Security number to law enforcement, you can become tangled in their criminal history. Their criminal record could prevent you from getting jobs or interfere with anything else that requires a criminal background check.
5. Steal Your Benefits
A thief could also use your Social Security number to file for unemployment or Social Security benefits, depleting those resources and preventing you from accessing that assistance when you need it later on.
How to Find Out If Your Social Security Number Has Been Stolen
Thieves can operate under your identity for years without discovery, and some of these crimes are very difficult to detect. One of the best things you can do is regularly check your credit report from Credit.com’s credit report card. Review your credit report thoroughly for unauthorized accounts or public records not related to you. These red flags could indicate clerical errors or identity theft. Either way, you want to watch out for it and act as soon as you see something suspicious.
