Looking to rent in a tight, competitive market or even a specific apartment community? A renter cover letter may not be required, but it could set you apart from the other potential candidates, increasing the odds that you’ll be the one signing that coveted lease.
Approaching the rental process as though you were vying for a coveted job — with a renter cover letter and resume — will leave a lasting positive impression and match the standards and criteria landlords have in place.
What to include
Much like the cover letter you’d send to a potential employer, a renter cover letter should showcase your best attributes for the landlord or property management company and let the decision makers know you’re the best choice among those presented, showcasing your professionalism and responsibility, two qualities landlords prize among tenants. It’s important to understand that a cover letter is supplemental to your required rental application, so only include information not listed in the application.
Property managers have a vested interest in choosing the most qualified applicants for their rental units, increasing the odds that the community rules will be adhered to, that the apartments will be well taken care of and that rent will be paid on time. Keep this in mind when writing your rental application cover letter, bragging and explaining your best qualities and attributes as a tenant is encouraged.
The Fair Housing Act prohibits landlords from discriminating against potential tenants on the basis of things such as race, religion, gender, disability, national origin and sexual orientation. However, they will pore over other criteria, including credit and employment history and the references they furnish, to make their decisions when filling vacancies with the ideal tenant.
If you have great credit and have been steadily employed, include it in your rental cover letter, along with things such as a positive rental history. Tell them who you are, but also who you aren’t. For example, if you’re applying with two other college students, you might be seen as irresponsible, inconsiderate or loud. Include in your cover letter — if it’s true — that you’re study-centric, not the type of people who would throw wild parties or play loud music. Showcasing hobbies that lend themselves to such traits like reading, gardening or volunteering for a local organization won’t hurt, either.

Yes, it’s possible to get a credit card without a job, although you’ll usually still need a source of income. This could come from excess financial aid, Social Security, a spouse’s income, or other avenues.
Yes, you can get a credit card without a job—and sometimes, even with low credit. Life transitions, college, retirement, and many other life circumstances may mean you’re unemployed when applying for a credit card. Building and maintaining healthy credit is important during every stage of life, and you may be surprised how simple it is to obtain a credit card even if you aren’t earning a consistent wage.
From using alternative incomes to cosigning and more, here are four tips for how you can get a credit card with no job.
Table of contents:
1. Consider all forms of income
2. Leverage someone else when applying
3. Go for a secured credit card
4. Make sure you can pay your balance
FAQ
1. Consider all forms of income
Ultimately, lenders care more about your income than they do about your salary. This means that qualifying for a credit card—even if you aren’t receiving a consistent wage—is completely feasible. Consider all income you have access to when applying for a credit card, no matter what stage of life you’re in.
If you’re a student
When you’re applying for a credit card as a student without a job, you can report any extra student aid that isn’t going toward tuition as “income.” This may help you qualify for a credit card.
If you have an employed spouse
Thanks to the Credit Card Act of 2009, those who are over 21 can report household income that they have access to when applying for a credit card. This means that you can report your spouse or partner’s income if you have a joint bank account or if they transfer an amount of money to you every month.
If you’ve lost your job
After losing a job, you’ll want to avoid overextending your budget. However, a credit card can still be a useful safety net in case of an unforeseen situation when funds are tight. You can report unemployment and severance as income when applying.
If you’re retired
You may also report any non-wage income when applying for a credit card. If you’re not working, this could be interest, dividends or Social Security payments. Ideally, retirees have had a long time to build up a solid credit history, so getting qualified for a credit card shouldn’t be difficult.
2. Leverage someone else when applying
We all need a little help from time to time. If they’re willing, friends and family with good credit may be able to cosign or add you as an authorized user on their credit card.
Have someone cosign
Although it’s a big favor to ask someone, having a parent or trusted close friend cosign on a credit card is a great way to qualify if your own credit history isn’t sufficient. If you choose this route, it’s doubly important that you make on-time payments each month—otherwise, you jeopardize both your own credit score and your co-signer’s.
Become an authorized user
If you still live with your parents, you may want to consider asking them to add you as an authorized user on their card. You can then use their credit card to make purchases and pay them the amount you spent. Although the card won’t be yours, as long as the primary cardholder makes consistent payments, the effects to your credit score will likely be positive. This option is best for those looking to build credit—but if you’re looking for a card of your own, a secured card may be better.
3. Go for a secured credit card
If you’re unable to meet the criteria to qualify for an unsecured credit card, you may want to explore secured options. Although uncommon—secured cards make up less than one percent of all consumer credit cards—they’re a great place to start.
A secured credit card is a card with relatively small maximums that borrowers can qualify for with a refundable safety deposit. The creditor may then use the deposit as collateral in case you are unable to pay back the balance.
New borrowers, those with poor credit or those without a steady income may find it easier to qualify for unsecured credit cards, as they’re seen as less risky by lenders. Two common secured credit card options are:
Discover It Secured Card: There’s no annual fee, and you get two percent cash back at restaurants and gas stations and one percent back everywhere else.
Capital One Secured Mastercard: A deposit as low as $49 gets you a credit limit of $200, and you are eligible for higher credit limits in as little as six months.
4. Make sure you can pay your balance
Remember that if you’re applying for a credit card without a job, you must be able to pay off the balance. Avoid getting into a borrowing situation that will cause you to carry over a large balance month to month, as credit card interest can get expensive.
Additionally, if you’re in college with student loans, credit card debt can be an extra burden on your debt load. In fact, a 2021 report found that credit card debt was the number one source of financial stress for college students, even above student loan debts.
As long as you don’t charge more than you can afford, unemployment doesn’t have to be a barrier to credit building. By ensuring a responsible, on-time repayment plan, you’ll set yourself up for credit success early on.
FAQ
If you have other questions about getting a credit card while unemployed, check out our answers to these commonly asked questions.
Does unemployment affect your credit?
Unemployment does not directly affect your credit. While your credit report does include your repayment history, it does not include your income, employment status, or whether you’ve filed for or received unemployment. If you need to apply for unemployment during hard times, don’t feel like you can’t.
However, if your job loss results in missed payments or overutilizing your credit card, these things could affect your score.
What’s a good annual income to get a credit card?
This depends on the issuer. While income won’t appear on your credit report or affect your credit score, issuers are still legally required to ask applicants their income per the Credit Card Act of 2009. This helps ensure credit borrowers can repay their debts. However, issuers set their own credit application requirements, and no total gross income limit for credit cards exists.
Remember to only borrow what you can reasonably repay. If you’re applying for a credit card with no income of your own, consider alternative solutions, like becoming an authorized user on a spouse’s credit card.
What disqualifies you from getting a credit card?
Credit card application approvals are at the issuer’s discretion, but generally, you must be at least 18 years old to open an account under your own name. Between 18 and 21 years old, you’ll also need to provide proof of independent income or have an adult cosign. Otherwise, issuers can set their own income, credit score and other requirements.
Can students get a credit card with no job?
Yes! Students who receive financial aid in excess of their tuition costs can count this extra money as income on their credit card applications. If this isn’t enough to qualify, students can also ask their parents to cosign on the credit card application—or add them as an authorized user to a family card.
What should I put on my credit application for my occupation if I have no job?
You can simply enter homemaker, stay-at-home parent, or none. Remember, you don’t need a job to get a credit card, so being honest here won’t disqualify you. The same thing goes if you come to a question about your employer information: just be honest and put none.

If you’re like most Americans, you love your plastic and swiping or tapping through your day. In fact, about 84% of Americans have at least one credit card, with the average wallet holding three.
The national love affair with credit cards is built on their convenience, how they provide a line of credit to enable buying things we can’t quite afford to pay for with cash, and those enticing rewards that are often offered.
But the picture is not altogether rosy: As a nation, US citizens have more than $1 trillion in credit card debt. And with interest rates averaging over 20%, that debt can be hard to chip away at.
To help you better understand how credit cards work, how much credit card debt people typically have, and what are smart strategies for paying down credit card debt, keep reading. You’ll learn interesting facts as well as helpful hints.
10 Facts About Credit Card Debt
Ready to learn more about credit card debt, a form of revolving debt? These 10 credit card facts will help you better understand who has how much debt and where difficulties paying the balance typically crop up.
1. More Than Half of Americans Have Outstanding Credit Card Debt
A majority of active credit card accounts carry a balance, according to the American Bankers Association. The specific figure is 56%. This indicates that carrying a balance is a common situation for many Americans, even with the eye-wateringly high interest that’s charged.
Recommended: Tips for Using a Credit Card Responsibly
2. Households with Credit Card Debt Owe an Average of Almost $8,000
American families had an average credit card balance of $7,951, according to calculations using Federal Reserve Bank of New York and US Census Bureau data. In 2013, that figure was $5,508.
Just because this is the norm, it doesn’t mean that it’s ideal: The best-case scenario is to only charge as much as you can afford to pay off in full every month. 💡 Quick Tip: A SoFi Credit Card provides access to a line of credit. It’s essentially a short-term loan that you repay each month.
3. It Can Take More Than a Decade to Pay Off $7,951 in Debt
Racking up credit card debt takes much less time than getting rid of it. Let’s assume that like the average American, you have $7,951 in credit card debt, as noted above.
At the current average interest rate of 21.19% on existing accounts, with a $150 monthly payment, it would take you 158 months — or 13 years and two months — to pay that off. And you would pay $15,606.40 in interest, or almost twice the original amount you charged!
But the more you can pay each month, the faster you’ll extinguish the debt. In this example, if you increase your monthly payment to $500, you’d pay off the debt in just a year and seven months and only spend $1,465.06 in interest. These scenarios are, however, assuming that you are not accruing new debt and therefore paying off larger credit card bills.
4. Gen Xers Have the Most Credit Card Debt
Ready for more credit card facts? Here is how age and debt intersect. Gen Xers, the generation that includes people born between 1965 and 1980, have the highest average credit card balance: $9,589. Next in line are Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, who have somewhat less debt — $8,192 on average — than Gen Xers.
5. Alaskans Have the Highest Credit Card Debt
In a state by state analysis of credit card debt, Alaska residents led the pack with $7,324 per person. Those who live in Wisconsin were found to have the lowest at $4,987.
6. 42% of College Students Have Credit Card Debt
The habit of carrying credit card debt unfortunately starts early, with more than four out of 10 college students carrying a balance on their credit cards. Of these, 28% say their debt exceeds $2,000. They say they accumulated that amount due to nonessential purchases, such as impulse buys, Uber rides, or fancy coffees. 💡 Quick Tip: To avoid paying interest, pay off your credit card bill in full and on time each month. Only making the minimum payment each month can lead to paying a lot in interest over time.
7. One in Three Americans Owes More On Credit Cards Than They Have Saved
This may be a scary fact about debt, but one in three US adults owes more on their credit card than they have saved. In fact, 36% say this is the case, versus just 22% a year earlier. That shows a two-sided problem: too much spending and too little saving.
Recommended: Paying Off $10,000 in Credit Card Debt
8. Richer People Have Credit Card Debt Longer
More interesting credit card debt facts: People who earn more than $100K a year are more than two times as likely as lower earners to have credit card debt for five years or longer. Among six-figure earners, 72% say they have had debt for at least a year vs. 53% of those who earn less than $50,000 per year. When considering those who’ve held credit card debt for five years or more, you’ll find that 27% of the high earners vs. 13% of the lower earners are in that situation.
Perhaps this statistic suggests that high-earners feel they have the means to handle debt and therefore don’t rush to repay it.
9. Men Have More Debt Than Women
Men have an average of $6,357 in credit card debt, while women have an average of $6,232. Perhaps not a huge difference, but so much for the myth of women shopaholics using credit cards to fill an overflowing closet with shoes.
There are many potential reasons for this difference, but some studies have found that women are less comfortable with debt.
10. There’s a Good Chance You’ll Die With Credit Card Debt
Here’s the last of these debt facts, and it can be a grim one: Nearly three-fourths of Americans are in debt when they die, according to one benchmark study.
And 68% die with credit credit card balances — more than the share who have mortgage debt (37%) or car loans (25%) when they pass away. That’s not exactly a desirable legacy. Although family members don’t generally become responsible for the debt, it may be taken out of the deceased person’s estate.
Why Is Credit Card Debt So Common?
There are many reasons that Americans have so much credit card debt, from rising healthcare and educational costs to lack of emergency savings to a cultural consumerism that encourages people to live beyond their means.
Regarding that last point, you may hear about the phenomenon referred to as Fear of Missing Out or FOMO spending, which is a modern version of “keeping up with the Joneses.” In other words, because your friends, coworkers, or influencers you follow on social media are buying something, you feel you should as well.
Or perhaps part of the problem can be explained by what is known as lifestyle creep. This situation occurs when you earn more money but your spending rises too, so your wealth doesn’t grow. For example, if you took a new, higher-paying job and decided to lease a luxury car or take a couple of lavish vacations, your wealth wouldn’t increase, though your credit card balance might.
Tips on Avoiding Credit Card Debt
Perhaps these facts about debt will motivate you to work on avoiding a credit card balance. If so, the following strategies could help.
• Review different budgeting methods, and find one that works for you. Many people use the popular 50/30/20 budget rule, for example. Also, see if your bank offers tracking and budgeting tools to help you rein in spending.
• Gamify savings. You might try sleeping on it rather than making impulse buys to see if the urge to spend passes; it often does. Or go on a spending freeze for a specific period of time or for a certain kind of purchase (say, no dining out in March; no clothing purchases in April).
• Try buying with cash or your debit card vs. plastic. That will help prevent your debt from snowballing.
• Consider trying a balance transfer card, which typically gives you a period of zero interest during which time you can pay down what you owe.
• In terms of a debt payoff strategy, you might investigate getting a personal loan with a lower rate than what your card charges. That could allow you to pay off the plastic debt and then have more manageable monthly payments.
• Seek help if you are really struggling to get your debt under control. Nonprofit organizations can help you accomplish this.

While women tend to lean towards side hustles for women, it’s high time for men to dive headfirst into the captivating world of side hustles!
How can a guy make extra money?
Making extra money doesn’t have to be monotonous. Whether you’re a tech whizz, an avid creator, or a hands-on worker, there’s something for you.
There are so many ways to make money. I just read this story about a college kid starting with $300 and turning his sticker side hustle into a full time business. 1
These options can yield solid income by leveraging your unique skills and interests. Want to learn more? Keep reading; we have plenty of ideas for you!
Top Side Hustles for Men
As my hubby said, extra income takes the financial strain off the normal job. With side hustles, you can choose how you want to spend your time – watching sports, playing video games, or making money.
The choice is yours!
Right now, learning to make money online for beginners is the most popular place to start.
1. Invest in Real Estate
Around here at Money Bliss, we always stress how to make your money work for you and real estate is no different.
Real estate investment is a golden opportunity that not only offers a steady income but also the potential for property value to soar. Keep in mind, that it’s a long-term game that requires a significant upfront investment.
However, there are many options like flipping properties, renting properties, or even investing through a REIT. Dive into the world of real estate to maximize your returns. Let your money do the heavy lifting for you.
2. Day Trader
Many men opt for trading stocks and options as a side hustle for several compelling reasons.
Trading offers flexibility, as your research can be done at any time, making it convenient to manage along with a nine-to-five job.
It has an immense profit potential, given the volatility and opportunities present in the global stock markets.
Many want to earn a rate of return greater than the average return of the S&P 500 – a common benchmark index for that competitor inside them.
Finally, trading presents an opportunity for continual learning and development, as successful trading requires staying updated with financial news, stock apps, market analysis, and economic trends, thereby enhancing one’s financial literacy.
Trade & Travel
Learn to trade stocks with confidence.
Whether you want to:
Retire in peace without financial anxiety
Pay your bills without taking on a side hustle
Quit your 9-5 and do what you love
Or just make more than your current income….
Making $1,000 every.single.day is NOT a pie-in-the-sky goal.
It’s been done over and over again, and the 30,000 students that Teri has helped to be financially independent and fulfill their financial dreams are my witnesses…
3. Become an Umpire or Referee
Sports fans, here’s your calling! Transform your passion into a profitable part-time gig by becoming a sports referee.
There is a HUGE shortage of umpires and referees.2 Rates per game can range from $20 to $60, and over time, you can earn even more as you referee older leagues. Plus many leagues are paying more to incentivize refs to come back to the fields.
Not only does it assure good pay, but it also lets you enjoy your favorite sport, exercise, and create exhilarating moments. Check it at your local club or league for training and to get started today.
This is something my brother-in-law did all the time and easily made 200 dollars a day.
4. Participate In Medical Studies
If adding to medical knowledge interests you while earning, consider participating in clinical trials.
Compensation depends on various factors like the study’s length and complexity. You can earn $50 to $300 a day!
It’s worth considering if you’re comfortable with potential risks and lengthy commitments. Websites like ClinicalTrials.gov or your local hospital could help you get started. It’s a unique way of contributing to medical research while making money. Do check the risks before diving in!
5. Moving and Heavy Item Delivery
Feel like adding some muscle? Moving and heavy item delivery might be your perfect hustle. If you’ve got a buddy, a solid back, and a truck (or can rent one), this is the gig.
You could easily earn about $20-$25 an hour helping people move houses or delivering large items. Opt for evening or weekend gigs to fit around your day job.
Get started by advertising your services or using apps like TaskRabbit or NextDoor. An excellent way to stay fit and earn some extra dollars at the same time!
6. Rent Out Your Extra Room
Do you have a spare room? Then, transform that neglected space into a cash cow.
Airbnb or VRBO can help you lease it out to travelers. Its user-friendly platform lets you manage rentals with aplomb. Plus, you get the chance to grow into a SuperHost.
Another option is to look at investing in a duplex where you live on one side and rent out the other.
7. Woodworking
This takes a special talent like my father-in-law had. He and his boys were known for crafting Adirondacks chairs, bedroom furniture, and patio tables.
So, if you have this woodworking knack, then this side hustle could be a golden ticket. The key to success is to perfect your craft to a few select items to be efficient with your time, so, you can better the profit. Let your handyman skills shine and earn you some extra cash!
The average earnings of a woodworking side hustle in the U.S. can range from approximately $500 to $3,000 or more per month, depending on factors such as the complexity of projects and marketing efforts.
8. Beekeeping
Honey, take note! If you’re not deterred by bees and are interested in agriculture, try your hand at beekeeping. This might be a family affair – like my daughter’s soccer coach.
Honey sells for around $20 a pound, and bees virtually do all the work! Plus, you contribute to pollination and the environment.
Combined with pest control services (like removing large nests), you can amplify your earnings. However, getting comfortable with bees might take time. But, once you do, the sticky sweet liquid gold that is raw honey could put a sizeable amount of money in your pocket.
9. Detail Cars
If you have a passion for cars and cleanliness, consider detailing cars as your side hustle. There’s something gratifying about transforming a dusty vehicle into a sparkling gem.
Depending on the quality of your service, you can earn up to $500 in a single weekend! Start by experimenting with your own car and build a portfolio to attract customers.
You’ll need tools like a good shop vacuum and detailing brushes. I have seen plenty of men showcasing their work on social media with before-and-after photos. Polish those wheels and drive towards profit!
10. Landscaping Side Hustle
Armed with green fingers? Eager to perform hard physical labor? Then a side gig in landscaping can do wonders for your wallet.

Potential income for this venture depends on how many hours of your time you are willing to trade.
11. Drive for Ridesharing Apps
Like to drive? Awesome, do it for cash! Ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft got you covered.
Be your boss, and work on your terms.
You need to make sure you have a nice car, proper insurance, and learn the busiest routes to maximize your earnings. Do pay heed to your vehicle’s wear and tear, though. However, this is one of the jobs that pay weekly.
12. Snow Plowing
Living in a snowy region? Consider snow plowing. This is a quick way to make money! I can attest to my kids quickly making $200+ a day from snow shoveling.

When it comes to higher education, Native Americans face obstacles. Educationdata.org says that postsecondary attendance among American Indian and Alaska Native students “has been in decline since 2010.” Only 0.7% of college students identified as American Indian or Alaska Native in 2022.
“Research has found that American Indians and Alaska Natives have a much lower rate of college completion than the population as a whole,” the Department of Education’s (DOE) Federal Student Aid (FSA) says on its website.
The soaring cost of college could have something to do with this: The average annual cost of tuition at a public 4-year college is 23 times higher than in 1963. The average cost of college for in-state students at a four-year institution in 2022-23 was almost $11K. Students at private nonprofit four-year institutions paid over $39K on average.
According to the DOE, loan forgiveness (or cancellation) is generally the term used if you are no longer required to make payments on some or all of your student loans.
While there are some specific programs to help with Native American student loan forgiveness, it’s important to also research what financial aid, including scholarships and loans, is targeted toward American Indians and Alaska Natives.

One very important resource: The Bureau of Indian Education provides a list of scholarships and grants available to Native American students, such as the American Indian College Fund.
Many states offer financial aid to Native American students attending college. Some individual colleges and state schools also offer free tuition and room and board to Native American students. For instance, Native American students who are Montana residents can qualify for a tuition waiver at Montana State University.
Keeping a career in mind when pursuing an education can make a big difference in financial aid and forgiveness options. 💡 Quick Tip: Enjoy no hidden fees and special member benefits when you refinance student loans with SoFi.
Health Services
One of the programs that gives priority to Native Americans is the Indian Health Services Loan Repayment Program. This program, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides funds for health professionals to help repay eligible education loans.
In 2023, the program announced an increase in the maximum annual award amount to $25,000 per year for new awards and extensions starting in Fiscal Year 2023. You can find details about the new award amount here.
In exchange, health professionals agree to an initial two-year service commitment practicing in areas that serve American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
Priority enrollment in this program is given to American Indians and Alaska Natives. Professions across the healthcare spectrum, including behavioral health, dentistry, and dietetics, are available.
The organization says that available opportunities are based on the greatest staffing needs in Native American health facilities. Participants are also eligible to extend their contracts annually until their qualifying student debt is paid.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness
This program, offered by the DOE, is open to all qualified students, not just Native Americans. The careers that may qualify for Public Student Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) range from forestry and natural resources to teaching and law enforcement.
To receive loan forgiveness for work in public service, applicants must work full-time for a qualifying government agency or certain nonprofits. After 120 on-time, qualifying payments in an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan, the remainder of the student debt can be forgiven.
The Department of Federal Student Aid offers a PSLF Help Tool to start work on the Employment Certification Form to apply.
Serving as a full-time AmeriCorps or Peace Corps volunteer also counts as qualifying employment for the program. Loans that may be eligible to be forgiven under PSLF include any non-defaulted loans that you received under the Direct Loan Program from the government. Private loans are not eligible for any federal forgiveness plans.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program
For students interested in pursuing a career in teaching, the DOE’s Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program is key. If you teach full-time for five years straight in a low-income school or educational service agency, you might be eligible for up to $17,500 for certain subject areas.
Even if you don’t teach math, science, or special education, you could still receive up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness if you are a qualified full-time elementary or secondary education teacher.
This might be another option for Native American students looking for student loan debt forgiveness by giving back to a community in need.
To qualify, the school or educational agency must be listed in the directory, published by the DOE, for the years you were/are a teacher. 💡 Quick Tip: It might be beneficial to look for a refinancing lender that offers extras. SoFi members, for instance, can qualify for rate discounts and have access to career services, financial advisors, networking events, and more — at no extra cost.
Lowering Your Student Loan Payments
While student loan forgiveness is often a great solution for debt relief, sometimes you might not qualify for career-based programs. One solution is income-driven relief (IDR) for federal student loans.
The Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan is the newest income-driven repayment plan. Like other IDR plans, the SAVE Plan calculates your monthly payment amount based on your income and family size. In addition, the SAVE Plan has unique benefits that will lower payments for many borrowers.
The SAVE Plan lowers payments for almost all people compared to other IDR plans because your payments are based on a smaller portion of your adjusted gross income (AGI). Your payment for federal undergraduate loans could be as low as 10% of your discretionary income -– and that percentage could decrease to 5% in 2024.
The SAVE Plan has an interest benefit: If you make your full monthly payment, but it is not enough to cover the accrued monthly interest, the government covers the rest of the interest that accrued that month. This means that the SAVE Plan prevents your balance from growing due to unpaid interest.

Refinancing Student Loans
Looking to lower your monthly student loan payment? Refinancing may be one way to do it — by extending your loan term, getting a lower interest rate than what you currently have, or both. (Please note that refinancing federal loans makes them ineligible for federal forgiveness and protections. Also, lengthening your loan term may mean paying more in interest over the life of the loan.) SoFi student loan refinancing offers flexible terms that fit your budget.
With SoFi, refinancing is fast, easy, and all online. We offer competitive fixed and variable rates.
SoFi Student Loan Refinance NOTICE: The debt ceiling legislation passed on June 2, 2023, codifies into law that federal student loan borrowers will be reentering repayment. The US Department of Education or your student loan servicer, or lender if you have FFEL loans, will notify you directly when your payments will resume For more information, please go to https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20230529/BILLS-118hrPIH-fiscalresponsibility.pdf https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/covid-19
If you are a federal student loan borrower you should take time now to prepare for your payments to restart, including the opportunity to refinance your student loan debt at a lower APR or to extend your term to achieve a lower monthly payment. Please note that once you refinance federal student loans you will no longer be eligible for current or future flexible payment options available to federal loan borrowers, including but not limited to income based repayment plans or extended repayment plans.

A Beginner’s Guide to the Best Credit Cards
Whether you’re new to credit and credit cards or are experienced and just looking for the best options, this brief guide will provide you with additional information before choosing your new card.
How Do Credit Cards Work?
Credit cards are like taking out small loans, allowing you to buy something now and pay for it later on. You’ll need to pay back the money you borrowed on your credit card, and this comes with interest.
Some cards offer 0% interest for a certain amount of time, which means you’ll only pay back the same amount charged on the credit card.
Here’s what a basic credit card transaction looks like:
The purchase: Make a purchase with your credit card.
The authorization: The card reader used to run your card contacts your credit card company to ensure the funds are available based on your max limit.
The merchant payment: Your credit card company pays the merchant for the product or service you purchased.
The credit card payment: Each month, you’ll have a statement that shows how much you owed based on all of the purchases you made.
Learn more: How do credit cards work?
How Do Credit Card Rewards Work?
Credit cards with the best rewards will give you a high percentage of cash back or points that you can use at places you make purchases. The following are the two main types of rewards:
Cash back: Cash back rewards pay down your balance. For example, if you’re getting five percent cash back on $5,000 worth of purchases, those purchases would technically cost $250 less.
Points and miles: Rather than cash back, some cards offer points or miles. You can use points to redeem gift cards and other merchandise. With travel cards, your earned miles give you discounted or free travel, depending on how much you have saved.
The rate of the rewards come in two different forms as well:
Flat rate: Cards that offer flat rate rewards give you the same percentage on all purchases. While this is more consistent, they’re lower than tiered rewards.
Tiered rewards: The most common rewards cards offer tiered rewards, which means you receive different rates based on where you use your card. For example, you may receive five percent cash back on groceries, travel and fuel but one percent for everything else.
Which type of reward structure you choose should be based on how you spend. If a card has tiered rewards with a high percentage cash back on purchases you make regularly, that type of card may be a better option. And if you travel a lot, you may benefit more from a travel card rather than a cash back rewards card.

How Do You Track Credit Card Rewards?
The majority of credit cards have a separate account that stores your rewards, which you can access through your credit card’s website or mobile app. Depending on the card and card issuer, you may see your rewards instantly after purchases, or they may not appear until the following billing cycle.
Here’s how the reward process looks:
You make a purchase
Your rewards are calculated based on a flat rate or tiered rewards
Your rewards are credited to your account
You redeem your rewards through the card issuer’s website or mobile app
Learn more: Ways to redeem your credit card reward points
How Does APR Work?
APR stands for annual percentage rate, which is the interest you’ll pay on your purchases. Simply put, this is what the card issuer charges you for borrowing money through your line of credit. Depending on the credit card, the APR may be fixed or changed based on the current economic conditions.
Below, we’ve listed some more helpful information about interest:
Your interest rate is generally based on your credit score, and you’ll get approved for lower rates when you have a better credit score.
While interest is shown as an annual rate, you’re charged, daily. For example, a 20 percent APR divided by 365 days in the year means you pay roughly .055 percent per day.
Your monthly statement shows how much interest you’re being charged.
Interest is not compounded, so you’ll pay your full interest cost each month.

How Does the Credit Card Application Process Work?
In the early days, credit card applications were done on paper, but now, you mainly do them online. When you apply for a credit card, the card issuer is evaluating your level of risk and trustworthiness based on your credit score. A good credit score indicates that you’ll pay back the money you borrow from your line of credit.
Here’s what the application process looks like:
Step 1: Fill out the application. You’ll need some personal information like your name, address and Social Security number. The card issuer may request other items.
Step 2: The card issuer runs your credit, which will check your score as well as your actual credit report. The credit score is just a number, but the report gives additional details such as how many cards you recently applied for or any additional details they may need.
Step 3: You’ll receive an approval or denial. These days, many online applications approve or deny you within just a few minutes.
If you’re approved for the credit card, you’ll typically receive the card by mail within 10 business days. Once you receive it, you can activate it and begin spending.

How Many Credit Cards Should You Have?
How many credit cards you have is really dependent on your situation and your preferences. There’s no optimal number of credit cards. Rather than the number of credit cards you have, you should take into consideration your credit utilization as well as how often you’re applying for new cards.
For example, if you have 10 credit cards but have a 20 percent credit utilization ratio, you’re doing great. But if you have three cards with a 70 percent utilization ratio, that can hurt your score. If you were to have that high of a utilization ratio with 10 cards as well, that would hurt your score. If you apply for new cards too often, this can also harm your score.

Types of Credit Cards Explained
When choosing a credit card, it’s helpful to know the various types. Different cards are beneficial for different lifestyles, purchasing decisions and personal preferences. Below, we’ve listed some of the most common types along with a brief summary of what they do.
Rewards cards: These cards pay you back via cash that you can use to pay down your credit card debt or points that you can redeem at stores or in the form of airline miles. You earn rewards by using your card.
Balance transfer cards: All credit cards have interest that you need to pay, but some have lower rates than others. Balance transfer cards allow you to move debt and give you a year or more to pay it back with no interest. This often comes with a fee, but the fee is usually less than the interest.
Low and no interest cards: These cards are some of the most popular because interest payments make purchases cost more than the original price. For those who plan on carrying their balance over to the following month, these are the ideal cards.
College student cards: Young people are just starting out with credit building, so these cards get marketed towards college students and can help with the process. They’re easier to get approved for, but you’ll still need to meet qualifications beyond being a student to receive an approval.
Small business cards: Business owners and entrepreneurs often need to make purchases with credit, and these cards offer perks that are specifically geared towards business categories.
Cards for building credit: Whether you have no credit or bad credit, these cards can help you repair or build your credit score when you use them responsibly and make payments on time. They’re easier to receive an approval for, but they sometimes come with high interest rates or deposits.
How Credit Card Companies Work
In order to understand how credit card companies work, it’s helpful to know that they’re more than just companies. Each card company works within a network, and, sometimes, they’re partnered with another brand.
Credit card issuers: A credit card company is the card issuer. This can be a bank or financial institution that maintains your account. For example, Wells Fargo, Chase and Capital One are all card issuers.
The network: On every credit card, you’ll see names like Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover. These are basically the go-between companies that manage the transaction.
Co-brand partners: In some cases, cards have branded partners. An example would be an airline, hotel or store credit card.
Let’s look at an example using one of the top cards from our Travel category, the Citi Premier® Card. Citi Bank is the card issuer, using the Mastercard network and doesn’t have a co-brand partner. Then, there are cards like the Hilton Honors American Express Card, where American Express is the card issuer and the network, and Hilton Hotels is the co-brand partner.

Remember, what’s considered “the best” is subjective, so you may want to do additional research to see which company is right for you. Some may have benefits that suit your needs and spending habits, or you may find it better to get a card through your current bank.
How to Choose the Card That’s Right for You
There’s a lot to consider when choosing the right credit card, so we’ve listed some of the primary features of various cards to help you make the best for you. It’s also helpful to remember that by improving your credit score, you’ll have more options for which credit card companies will approve your application.
Annual Fees
Many cards come with no annual fee, but the ones that do often offer some additional perks and benefits. You’ll need to see if the fee makes sense based on what you’ll use the card for.
A great example is when it comes to travel credit cards. These may come with a fee, but you might save more than enough due to the rewards you gain in comparison to the annual fee.
Other Fees
Different cards come with different fees, and they’re not always advertised front and center when you’re applying for a credit card. You’ll often need to go looking on the application page for additional information to find out which fees you’ll pay as you use your card.
Some of the most common fees include:
Balance transfer fee: A fee for transferring debt from one card to another, which is often a percentage of the amount transferred.
Foreign transaction fee: When you’re out of the country, many cards charge up to 3% for using your card while traveling abroad.
Cash advance fee: Some credit cards allow you to use them like an ATM card for a cash advance, but these come with high interest rates as well as a fee.
Late fees: Credit cards usually have a grace period for making your payments, but these may also come with a late fee.
Learn more: How much does one late payment affect credit scores?
Introductory Rates
Credit card companies make money by charging interest, but many have promotional offers where you’ll receive low interest on purchases for a certain amount of time. Some are as low as 0% interest.
Regular Rates
Regular rates, also called “ongoing rates,” are the interest rates you pay once the introductory period is over. You can find this rate in the terms and conditions on the application, so you can use it to compare it to other cards.
Rewards
We’ve gone over the various types of rewards, such as flat-rate, tiered and points. This is where comparing cards gets specific to your lifestyle. If you travel a lot, a card with travel rewards may be right for you, but if you don’t, you may want to look at cards that give you cash back at places where you shop. You may also get a sign-up bonus with some credit cards that come as cash back rewards or points.
Perks
In addition to rewards, there are sometimes additional perks like cell phone insurance, identity theft security, rental car coverage and more.
How to Get a Credit Card in Six Steps
Now that you have all the knowledge you need to choose the right card, we’re going to put it all together in six simple steps:
Step 1: Check your credit score to know what types of cards you can apply for.
Step 2: Research various cards that sound like they might be the right ones for you
Step 3: Narrow down your options so you don’t apply for too many cards. Remember, each application may trigger a hard inquiry on your credit report, which can temporarily drop your credit score.
Step 4: Apply for the card through the card issuer’s website.
Step 5: Wait for a decision.
Step 6: If you’re approved, you should receive your card within 10 business days, and then you can start using the card for purchases once the card is activated.

There are numerous ways to invest for college students, including using brokerage accounts, or even retirement accounts like individual retirement accounts (IRAs) or 401(k)s. But there are many other things that college students should take into account before or while investing, too.
For college students, it’s never too early to start investing your money. In fact, the earlier you start, the faster you may be able to meet long-term goals such as a graduate degree, buying a house, or even retirement.
Why You Should Start Investing Early
There are a number of reasons to start investing early. Chief among them is potential return. The average annual return offered by the S&P 500 — a market-capitalization-weighted index of the 500 largest companies in the U.S. – is around 10%.
That’s considerably more than you’re likely to generate from putting your money in a savings account – even a high-yield savings account. That means that while money in a savings account is accruing interest, it’s actually losing value at the same time. Investing may help you outpace inflation and give you an extra boost towards your long term goals. 💡 Quick Tip: Look for an online brokerage with low trading commissions as well as no account minimum. Higher fees can cut into investment returns over time.
3 Ways to Invest While in College
There are numerous ways for college students to invest their money, including the use of tax-advantaged retirement accounts, and traditional brokerage accounts.
IRA
Traditional and Roth IRAs are a type of retirement account that almost anyone can open up and start contributing to. There are rules regarding how much you can contribute every year, and when you can take withdrawals (depending on the type of IRA you open), but they can be relatively easy ways to kick-start a college students’ investment portfolio.
Brokerage Account
A brokerage account allows you to make investments through a brokerage firm by depositing funds with them. Your bank may already have brokerage options, or you may consider other outside firms.
A brokerage account allows students to buy and sell stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and other assets through a brokerage firm. Be aware that selling assets can trigger short-term or long-term capital gains taxes. Short-term taxes are charged at your regular income tax rate, and long-term rates are either 0%, 15%, or 20% depending on your tax bracket.
401(k)
A 401(k) is a type of retirement account offered through an employer, though there are some versions, such as Solo 401(k)s, you can open yourself. Like IRAs, there are annual contribution limits, and traditional and Roth 401(k)s to choose from.
The money you put in the account is tax deductible and it grows tax-free while it’s invested. That said, generally, you can’t withdraw money from the account until you reach age 59 ½, or you’ll be subject to a 10% early withdrawal penalty.
Steps to Start Investing as a College Student
For college students getting started investing, there are several steps that they can take to find their footing. It starts by giving some thought to your overall financial goals, determining what you can afford to invest, and then building your portfolio.
Set Clear Financial Goals
It’s important, before you make your first investment as a college student, to give some serious thought and consideration to your financial goals. Do you want to hit a total net worth or dollar amount by a certain age, for instance? Or, do you want to save up enough to buy a home or start a family?
These are the types of financial goals you should think about. Having clear financial goals in mind before you start investing can help guide your decision-making in regard to what types of investments you make.
Determine How Much Money You Can Set Aside
With your goals in mind, you’ll want to think about how much money you realistically can set aside to invest. Odds are, you won’t be able to invest your entire paycheck – there’s rent to pay and groceries to buy, after all. But if you can free up some additional money in your budget for investing, that should help you get your portfolio started. Again, think about how much you can realistically use for investment purposes.
Choose the Right Investment Account
Knowing how much you have to invest and some end-goals in mind, you’ll need to decide what type of investment account will best help you reach those goals. As discussed, this might be a retirement account like an IRA or 401(k), or a brokerage account, which will allow you to buy and sell stocks, or even day trade, if you’d like – though most financial professionals may caution against it.
Understand Types of Investments
You’ll also want to review and deepen your understanding of the various types of investments out there. That can include a variety of asset types such as stocks, bonds, cash, real estate, commodities, precious metals, and more. Not all types will be best for each and every investor – again, it depends on your goals.
Fund Your Investments
The rubber is finally starting to meet the road! You’ll finally want to actually fund your chosen account (be it a brokerage account, etc.) and make your initial investments. This marks the start of your investment portfolio.
Tips for Investing as a College Student
Investing as a college student may seem relatively easy – particularly to get started – but it never hurts to accept some guidance. Here are a few tips for investing as a college student.
Stay Diversified
A good rule of thumb for investors of all stripes is to try and stay diversified by investing in many types of assets and asset classes. The basic idea of portfolio diversification is that the fewer investments you expose yourself to, the more risk you take on should they perform poorly.
Imagine you invest in only one stock and that company folds — if that happens, you’ve lost your entire investment. However, if you invested in 100 different stocks, one company failing would affect you far less. Diversification, however, does not eliminate all risks, including the risk of loss.
One way to stay diversified is by investing in mutual funds or exchange traded funds, which bundle groups of stocks together, essentially doing the work of diversification for you.
Avoid Emotional Investing
The market experiences natural ups and downs. As these fluctuations occur, it’s important to try to avoid letting your emotions impact your investing.
When the market makes a big dip, you may feel the urge to sell investments. However, by doing so you’re actually locking in your losses. Examine what is motivating you to sell, as it’s usually a good idea to let reason prevail so you don’t miss out on any future upturn that may take place. 💡 Quick Tip: Did you know that opening a brokerage account typically doesn’t come with any setup costs? Often, the only requirement to open a brokerage account — aside from providing personal details — is making an initial deposit.
Timing the Market vs Time in the Market
When the market is doing well, you may find yourself tempted to get in on the action and end up buying investments that are too expensive. This type of buying and selling is known as timing the market. You may want to avoid checking the market multiple times a day to help keep your emotions in check and avoid the temptation to time the market.
It might help to think of investing as a long-term proposition. The longer you allow your investments to stay in the market, the more opportunity they have to ride out downturns — and the more opportunity you have to take advantage of an upswing.
Balancing Investing With Academic Responsibilities
As a college student, you should keep your studies in mind, first and foremost. Your academic responsibilities, in most cases, should probably take precedence over your investing activity – though you should keep an eye on your portfolio and learn as much as you can about the markets, too.
